Is Cassel/Pioli/Haley going make the Chiefs relevant on the National level?

As much as people hate LJ now, when he was good he brought a shit load of attention to the Chiefs. I remember seeing LJ on Letterman or Leno, and ESPN, seeing celebs with his jersey on. When do you ever see a celebrity with a Chiefs jersey on nowadays? Tony G. has always been a big hit as well, but he's gone and LJ isn't doing anything anymore (whether it's his fault or not) D Bowe is a very good WR but he's no Moss or Fitzgerald so he's overlooked. So is Cassel going to do for the Chiefs what Brady did for the Pats? The Pats are in the limelight now, but nobody used to give a crap about the Pats.

My answer?

Yes, eventually. Cassel has all the qualities to become a great team leader and eventual star in the league. Once the talent is upgraded around him and his game continues to improve, he will get the recognition he deserves as will the Chiefs. Right now, we are cellar dwellers and NOBODY will get recognition until we start winning some games.

It all starts this Sunday.

Good answer 1970

I also think Cassel will be a good QB when he gets some help. One thing everyone need to realize is even when the Chiefs win the SB again we will still never get the recognition other teams get.

Chiefs set an NFL record, most roster changes in 1 season.

You're right

Look at the Cardinals…they go to the Superbowl unexpectidly and they lose in the final minutes of the game to the Steelers and they still aren’t even on a national level.

No. It started LAST Sunday.

Now we just need to see the winning continue!

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

I agree

People complain that we’ve been rebuilding for 3 years. And their wrong.

We were rebuilding Herms way. And I liked his approach, but not the execution.

We are RE-rebuilding and this is the 1st season of it. This year is the year that we can really evaluate what we have, figure out whats working and whats not, and what needs to improve.

Honestly, I think the OL is going to look entirely different next year. I think its possible that Albert and O’Callaghan keep their positions, but I’d say O’Callaghan has a better chance of staying at RT than Albert does staying at LT. I think theres a strong possibility that Albert gets moved to LG. If not, I’m willing to bet that we have 2 new G’s and a new C, unless Waters stays. If Waters stays, I think he gets moved to RG and we bring a new LG.

I also think the 2nd priority is LB. But I think this really depends on the evaluation. If Pioli/Haley feel that Studebaker and Belcher can step up and really play good, then maybe we only need 1 more LB. If not, we need atleast 1 new MLB and we need to get Vrabel’s replacement in asap so Vrabel can teach him the way. I think they feel that Studebaker could be that person but I dont know. I like Hali in his position and I’m excited to see how he grows into it. He already has the same amount of sacks he had in 15 games last year. I think he could get 8 sacks in his first year at ROLB in the 3-4. Thats not bad at all.

Depending on how we handle the LB’s, I think NT is a top priority as well. I dont think Edwards is the answer and I dont think they feel that way either.

Considering that DL usually take atleast 2 seasons to adjust in the NFL, I’d say that picking a NT could be top priority. We have 2 2nd round picks that could be used to pick up a 2 OL. Or maybe we draft a stud OL in the 1st round then NT and another OL in the 2nd.

This upcoming offseason should be really..really interesting.

If we are good enough to win 1 Super Bowl

then we can for damn sure win 2. We are rebuilding for success over years to come, not just one Lombardi. You cannot deny the Patriots, the steelers, and the OLD Jimmy johnson Cowboys. Multiple Super bowl winners.

by RedDawn on Oct 23, 2009 11:16 AM CDT reply actions

The Chiefs

will probably continue to linger in anonymity because of the dilemma they find themselves in. They don’t have enough talent to win games so this makes it impossible to attract star quality FA’s.

They also do not have a proven head coach, Haley’s volatility is probably a concern to potential FA’s. This leaves the draft as the only vehicle to build their team. The draft only comes once a year, so they are looking at two or three years minimum and since the draft is a hit or miss gamble, it could take longer.

Unless Hunt can hire a superstar head coach who can attract FA’s we will have to be patient and hope Pioli can come up with the right 53 and start winning. I’m a little concerned that he (Pioli) didn’t address the O line in his first draft. I thought everyone in football was aware of KC,s O line problem.

Pioli has staked his reputation on Matt Cassel. So he (Cassel) has to succeed, so this could be another mistake the Chiefs are saddled with, unless the problem is the O line. I would like to see another QB in there to find out.
I don’t see the Chiefs being relevant on any national level soon, barring a miracle or the greatest draft in 2010 and the greatest coaching spectacle ever in the NFL.

I hope I’m wrong and I probably am.

if you truly are a choirboy

I can see why you don’t like Haley. But, that’s not a legitimate reason not to like him, nor is it going to prevent top FAs coming here. The only two things you need to get top FAs is money and winning. Sometimes only money. We will have no trouble recruiting who we want.

Air Cassel - approved for takeoff

by kabrink on Oct 23, 2009 2:11 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't dislike Haley

Good free agents don’t want to play for losing teams. They want super bowls. If all they want is money they won’t be in the right 53.

I think we do have a problem attracting good young FA’s. I agree that wins can change everything but up to this point we stink.

by choirboy on Oct 23, 2009 2:32 PM CDT up reply actions

People always have a bias to the areas they grew up in.

FA’s will have tons of reasons for where and why they want to go there.
I don’t think Haley would be a major pro or a con on where they sign.
Pioli will be!

I agree

because of the factors. Winning games isnt always what attracts FA’s. For instance, Larry Foote went to Detroit because thats where he grew up.

Some people want to play for cities in nice weather, some people prefer cold weather, some people like a good mix of both (like we get in KC)

I think Haley/Pendergast wants to get Karlos Dansby. I really hope we end up getting him after this season too. Hes 6’4, 250lbs, ran a 4.5 40, 1st team all american. I couldnt believe this guy wasnt a 1st round pick. I was a big fan of him in college and wished the Chiefs would have drafted him. Ive followed his career and he brings alot to the table. Dansby expressed his interest in a new contract and was franchised. Twice in a row. I’m willing to bet that he wouldnt be hard to pry from AZ.

Bottom line, money talks more than wins do. Older FA’s usually want to go to winning teams because theyre at the end of their careers. Tony G is a good example.

by Petey14 on Oct 24, 2009 6:28 PM CDT up reply actions

The issue with free agents...

can be easily rectified by racking up a few wins later in the season. If the Chiefs are showing tangible improvement, the free agents will be more willing to come here.

I kid, I kid,

In all honesty, I have been less than impressed with cassel. His accuracy is poor, timing is bad, he holds the ball to long, He can’t throw downfield, and he seems to get frustrated during games. He panics in the pocket ans scatters rather than stepping up and making a throw, almost running into the d at times. I guess what I’m trying to say is, it’s time to take colt mccoy in the first round…

Tebow is NOT going to be a good NFL QB...

At least not for a few years. Colt McCoy on the other hand… Doesn’t matter though cuz Cassel is our guy. He is going to be a DAMN good QB once he is surrounded by some respectable talent and a good defense.

Even at this point, if we were to fix a couple of pieces on the O-line and maybe stop giving Larry the ball so much and give those carries to one of the young guys, this would be a MUCH better football team. Cassel is NOT part of the problem. He is most definitely part of the solution.

colt mccoy in the 1st?

we just payed cassel 60 mil, he ain’t goin anywhere.
I like cassel, he’s competitive, a little mobile, he’s made some really nice throws at the end of games to put us in a pos to win and he doesn’t turn the ball over. and as haley stated in todays press conference, “he’s only played in 21 games, that’s not a lot for a QB”, it takes time.
you’d rather pay him 28mil to not play and then spend our 1st on a QB, pay him a butt load and he probably won’t play for a couple years?
why do we as fans always know more than the guys that have been doing it their whole life at the highest level (Pioli, haley, ect.) they must not know shit!

We just have to pray that the signing and starting of Cassel wasn't premature.

Lookin’ at what McDaniels is doing with Denver right now, and knowing he wanted Cassel before he wanted Orton is a sideways endorsement of Cassel from somebody who wants to beat the Chiefs.

The bottom line, to me, on the wisdom of the Cassel thing is whether or not Cassel can survive the season relatively unharmed and not be beaten down by all the beat-downs!

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

Last year the Chief's ended the season as one of the worst three teams in the NFL.

I would suggest that they, right now, are better than that and that next season they will be within the upper half. That is improvement.

I think it's relatively easy to be in the top half.

You just have to win one more than you lose. That’s .500 ball with one play that falls your way rather than the other way. And off a losing season, you have a strength-of-schedule edge. If the new crew know what they’re doin’, turnin’ the corner oughta happen soon.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

by hmills110 on Oct 23, 2009 8:11 PM CDT up reply actions

I think if you want FAs, you can get 'em.

You just have to pay for ‘em, like Chokeland and Washington do. Seymour did it pretty much against his will. Ellis worked out in a number of places. Chokeland prob’ly hired him for reasonable. They picked up Seymour, virtually against his will, for a season. And Washington mortgaged the homestead for Haynesworth.

There’s no question, though, that you build your team thru the draft. It’s not so much attracting the best FAs, though, it’s more a question of not needing many! Sure, the best thing to do, sometimes, is to add a FA to top off the tank, but it’s very easy to go wrong.

The standard rule of thumb appears to be that the more you need a FA to turn things around, the less likely a FA is going to turn things around. But when you’re a team on the up-tick, like Atlanta, a Tony G pickup can make a lotta sense. The trick is to be smart enough on how you do things so that you’re in position to pick up the guys you need as they come available.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

What Pioli hasn't done...

…is spend every pfennig he had to make the team as strong as he possibly could. Even if some of it were totally wasted, at least he’d’ve have had a serious look at more guys than he did in an effort that netted 1 win in 6 outings.

By that measure, not impressed at all. But if we see him tearin’ up contracts and rewarding players with NOW money in November/December – guys that came in at or near the minimum, but earned significant minutes. If they are immediately rewarded, and Pioli doesn’t punk them, for instance, Belcher and Mays, even if the intention is to pursue an upgrade in the offseason, the guys gettin’ the minutes should see better money sooner, rather than later. That sort of thing builds good will.

One of the keys to runnin’ a good meritocracy is inspiring the guys on the bottom, workin’ their way up. If they all try harder, you see more of those guys emerging as stars.

Like you’re sayin’ up above, Steve. If we see true Enlightened Self-Interest demonstrated by Pioli, dicey situations that could fall either way, tend to fall in your favor. Adam Smith’s Invisible Hand at work. Interesting to note along the Dimitroff/Blank lines, that, while it appears to be good value for a 2nd, it’s actually a much sharper deal than Peterson admitted he was able to get. Peterson said the other day he’d’ve been run outta town for only landin’ a 3rd-rounder for a younger Tony G, and that was the best value he could find!

I can’t put my finger on a single deal, Steve, where Carl squeezed when he had his fingers around another GM’s throat, but judging by how he overpaid a few and kept his foot on the necks of others, I’d expect Carl made some GM’s pay through the nose whenever he had ’em over a barrel. Tank Tyler for a 5th was not a very greedy deal by Pioli, especially if he thrives in Carolina, and I suspect the newness of the team switch and the tough training he went through in the offseason, will find Tyler to be a nice pickup for the Panthers.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

by hmills110 on Oct 23, 2009 7:52 PM CDT reply actions

That is why the deals never materialize for Peterson.

Why guys that put Carl over the barrel never stayed. Why Marty left?
Why guys like Dungy and Cowher never came back to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Fiefdom

1. The estate or domain of a feudal lord.
2. Something over which one dominant person or group exercises control.

Yes Whitlock did grasp that and run it for years.

We gave Pioli this Title on AP

1. Don also (dn) Abbr. D. Used as a courtesy title before the name of a man in a Spanish-speaking area.
2. Chiefly British
a. A head, tutor, or fellow at a college of Oxford or Cambridge.
b. A college or university professor.
3. The leader of an organized-crime family.
4. Archaic An important personage.
