Where the Kansas City Chiefs Rank: Week 7
Good news this morning Arrowhead Pride readers. The Kansas City Chiefs no longer have the worst defense in the NFL! Thank you Washington...
I've compiled two tables - offense and defense - of where the Kansas City Chiefs rank in various categories relative to the rest of the NFL. Last week's ranks are in parentheses and I've colored the stats where we improved in green and where we dropped in red.
The good news this week? Lots more green in these tables. You can check out last week's tables here.
From Week 5 to Week 6, the Chiefs improved their rankings in exactly zero categories. After last Sunday's game, the team has improved their rankings in 19 of our different categories, with most of those gains coming on the defensive side of the ball.
Some of the most important improvements in my opinion are:
- Defensive 3rd down percentage
- Offensive first downs per game
- First downs allowed per game
- Interception rate
And some of the important areas where we remained stagnant or lost ground in the rankings:
- Rushing yards per game
- Offensive yards per game
- Sacks per pass attempt
- Points a game
Jump over and check out the tables. Take a closer look and let us know your thoughts.

Expected
Those defensive improvements aren’t that big of a shock considering we are going from playing great teams to terrible/mediocre teams. What’s embarrassing is the decline in offensive statistics against a pretty lousy Washington team. I suppose their defense was considered middle of the pack, but it still doesn’t bode well.
Looking at the schedule again, I would expect we see a steady climb in rankings throughout the season. I consider this Chiefs team to be about the best of the worst from what I have seen so far. Our final season stats will likely show the same barring some sort of miracle.

Washington's D
Washington’s D was rated 4th in the league I believe. That would suggest that maybe our offense is coming around in spite of the sack totals. There are some pretty good teams with high sack totals. If we get our running game going agains SD we should have good results the rest of the season. Pitt and Ugh denver are the only exceptional D’s we have left…

Washington's D also has yet to play a team with a win.

Not exactly.
They’ve yet to play a team that had notched a win going into the game. They’ve played 4 teams that have notched a win leaving the game.

Nice...
Next week I want to see a lot more green!
The Chiefs were actually good the last time Kenny Smith has played in a game. Gives you an idea of how long ago that was. lol

Take the 2 big plays out and we improved alot more
Washington’s offense really helped us as much as we helped ourselves.

Had it not been for Portis' one big run
Which also had a mssive hold to help spring him, our run D would had been great. Beyond that one run, they had virtually no running attack.

Some definite improvement there.
When you look at those numbers, it really does reflect the problem on the line. You fix that O-line and this team starts to look pretty solid in all areas. I know the defense is ranked at 29 but, it is looking better every week. I still think we will be in the low teens by the end of the season as long as we don’t have any horrific injuries (Ron Edwards)

I saw a stat I couldn't believe
Guess who is 32nd in the league in rushing yards per game…
The San Diego Chargers – 57.6 yds/game!
We are 25th, with 98.0 yds/game
Ryan Succop will be the kicker for the AFC in the 2011 Pro Bowl

That IS interesting...
Although, I’m not worried about us stopping their run game, it’s stopping Rivers that is my biggest concern. I think the Chiefs defense is in for another big day this week. Special teams too. Maybe we can take a page out of Denvers book and figure out how we can get a return TD this week.

I'm highlt encouraged with the D, however
Ron is a 10 year vet and will need more resting as the season goes on, and we better hope he does not go down. Does anyone feel as I do that DJ maybe a better safety than a LB. He has speed but is too easly blocked at the line. This has been a problem. I really enjoy AP. keep up the good work.

Stats don't get you in the playoffs, stats don't win the championships.
These are great indicators on where this teams stands in terms of production, but it is wins and losses that make the final determination afterall.

If that's the case....
You might want to wait until next year to start watching the games then cuz, I doubt we are going to set the world on fire and end the season with a winning record.
The team is improving in BIG strides all the time. This season will suck to watch if all you care about is wins but, it is nice to see the team get better each week and I am sure we will sneak a few more wins this year. I bet we win 5 more games starting this week at home.
