Chiefs Add An LSU Tiger Defensive Lineman to the Practice Squad
Josh Looney of KCChiefs.com lets us know that former LSU Tiger Marlon Favorite has been added to the practice squad. He was one of the three defensive linemen that reportedly worked out for the Chiefs a couple weeks ago.
DL Marlon Favorite, a former teammate of fellow Chiefs defensive linemen Glenn Dorsey and Tyson Jackson has joined the practice squad. Favorite entered the NFL as a rookie free agent with Carolina in 2009. He was released by the Panthers following training camp.
Favorite is expected to join the club for practice this morning.
Like I said before, this means that the Chiefs could potentially line up an all-LSU defensive line at some point.
A spot on the practice squad opened up when Barry Richardson was activated in the wake of Branden Albert's injury. It appears that Richardson will stay on the active roster for the moment.

He was *great* in High School!
“A blue-chip defensive tackle considered to be rated in the top five nationally … First-team All-American by USA Today and ranked as the nation’s No. 1 defensive tackle prospect by ESPN.com … Member of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Super Southern 100, the Baton Rouge Advocate Super Dozen and the New Orleans Times-Picayune’s Top 20 Blue-Chip list … First-team 5A all-state in 2003 … Totaled over 100 solo tackles and 100 assisted tackles throughout his career … Earned first-team all-state honors as a senior with 115 tackles, nine sacks and 17 hurries … Also an all-district and all-metro selection in 2003 … Dazzled scouts at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl … Led the Buccaneers to a 10-1 record and playoff berth in 2003 … Made 105 tackles, including 35 tackles for loss and 20 sacks in 2002 …”

He was also "great"....
back when I drafted him to the Chiefs in Madden ‘07 (exported from NCAA ’07) – which doesn’t mean poo-schnickens.
It is strange though when you see players actually excel in a game and years later they turn out to be good in real life. I remember drafting D.Bowe in Madden ’05 and kept him for years – eventually seeing him actually become a Chief and do well.
On the flip side of that, in the same Franchise I was playing in Madden ‘07 I was able to pick a washed-up, discarded 30 year old Shawne Merriman to play in my 3-4… the way he’s playing right now, that might also be a vision of the future (not the playing for the Chiefs part, the washed up, discarded part).

Thanks for this
From the link –
One of the more popular Tigers, NFL teams will appreciate his positive outlook and locker room leadership in addition to his motor and other physical talents.
sounds like a Pioli guy
and
Positives: Active, stout defender with long arms. Uses that length to secure tackles on the line. Chases down the line and hustles downfield after plays. His low center of gravity helps him to get under his man’s pads and maintain the line of scrimmage against double teams. Has the strength and hand play to shed blocks and tackle the ballcarrier. Effective spin move when coming after the quarterback. Keeps his eyes in the backfield during the pass rush; will fight until the ball is away. Shows quick, violent hand play at times.
Negatives: Shorter than scouts prefer at defensive tackle. Big in the middle but has only adequate girth. Plays the three-technique for LSU but will be better covering the A-gaps in the NFL. Lacks straight-line speed to catch ballcarriers from behind. Most of his plays behind the line will be due to hustle and good coverage instead of a great initial burst off the snap. Must be more consistent using his hands to defeat cut blocks, although he generally recovers well. Stamina is an issue, as he was part of a constant rotation at LSU.
Sounds like a potential NT

As Haley would say: he passes the eye test
Marlon has the prototype frame to be a nose tackle. Thick arms, thighs, calfs and rump. Can he occupy 1 – 2 O-linemen is the big question. Hopefully Krumrie can teach this kid up. He’s gotta be thrilled to be reunited with Dorsey and Jackson again. I hope he works his but off this season and sticks the PS or even makes the 53 man roster.
Kenny Smith at NT seems like it coudl be a short lived thing. He hasn’t been in a training camp, i wonder what type of shape and condition he’ll be in, especially if he has an injury prone past.

Favorite is a bit short... but otherwise, he looks good
And, I agree… Smith is probably not on the roste by week 8

Let me get this straight...
we trade a DT to Carolina in order to make roster space for a DT Carolina didn’t think was good enough for their team? Not exactly a ringing endorsement of the guy’s ability.
I hope he can become a player at NT so we don’t have to draft another DL in the first round.

remember
they DIDN’T trade Tank for Favorite or Smith
they Traded Tank for a 5th Round pick.
Favorite and Smith are just filling an empty roster spot

Although Tebow would be (IMO) a Pioli guy....
….He is a talented athlete capable of lineing up at multiple positions on the field. In that aspect he definatly fit the “Patriot Way”. Could be intriguing but not for what it would cost to take him, too much $ and too much risk. It would be a serious, job on the line, band or bust move by Pioli.

Carolina needed
a DT while we needed a NT. Carolina feels that Tank is much better suited for the 4 -3 while Favorite (hopefully) will be able to become a better NT for us than what Tank was. And then we can add the 5th & hopefully we come out ahead. If not, we can drink the fifth! :)

some of those later round picks make for good backups
so he may not look amazing but still help our team. at least they’ll try to pick guys that fit our scheme which apparently tank didn’t
by E.C. on Oct 21, 2009 11:36 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
again, a 5th round pick in 09 could have been
Johnny Knox or Jasper Brinkley
in 2010 I’ve seen some rankings that make
Denorrio Alexander, WR
Micah Johnson, ILB
Boo Robinson, NT
available with a 5th round pick, possibly…

my point
is that there’s good value in the 5th round, and many of those guys could have more impact on this team than Tank could, given that he was a backup

not to mention
John Jerry, G… he is supposed to be really good. IF he falls to the 5th, and the Chiefs get him with the Tank pick…
would you complain? Mike Goff’s replacement would be a nice value received for trading away Ron Edwards’ backup!!!!!

true, but you did say “we trade a DT to Carolina in order to make roster space for a DT Carolina didn’t think was good enough for their team?”
you’re mixing up the reasoning there…
They didn’t trade Tank TO make space for Smith or Favorite…
they traded Tank for a 5th round pick. PERIOD.
Favorite and Smith are coming in to back up Edwards, in case he gets hurt. Haley had already decided that Edwards was his guy for the rest of the year, so Tank was expendible, and these new guys are just the bodies keeping Tank’s bench spot warm
