Schefter: Chiefs Sign a Veteran Nose Tackle

6 months ago: New England Patriots veteran outside linebacker Kenny Smith (92) stretches during football practice at the team's training facility in Foxborough, Mass., Wednesday morning, May 20, 2009. (AP Photo/Stephan Savoia)

The Kansas City Chiefs have signed veteran nose tackle Kenny Smith according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.  Smith is listed as 6'4", 303 pounds.

Smith played college ball at Alabama before being drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the third round of the 2001 NFL draft, where he started 10 of 30 games accumulating 69 tackles and 4.5 sacks.

He stayed there until 2004 before moving onto the Oakland Raiders for one season where he was placed on injured reserve.

He was out of football during the 2006 season but signed to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in March of 2007 where he lasted a little over a month being released days after the 2007 draft.

He spent the 2007 offseason with the New England Patriots before being released.  He later signed with the Patriots the following offseason, where he was placed on injured reserve for the season.

The Patriots released him in June of this year.

Injury prone?  Let's break this down: IR for the '04, '05 and '08 season.  Out of football during the '06 and '07 season.

The Chiefs do not have an open spot on the active roster but one could guess that Barry Richardson will move back down to the practice squad, where there is an open spot.

so......

does he have to pass the conditioning test before practice?

by ICTChief on Oct 21, 2009 9:25 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

They're not going to hold him to that.

He might go down for the season trying to run the wind sprints.

by JacinB on Oct 21, 2009 9:25 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe we can cart him ONTO the field.

You know, and then just off-load him into his spot so he does pull a hamstring or something jogging out there.

Isnt there one of those motorized carts he can use--

by JacinB on Oct 21, 2009 9:24 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

We did get a 5th rd pick for Tank

This guy is a cheap insurance policy to relieve Edwards for a few snaps per game…which is what Tank was starting to amount to anyway.

Dude.

With his injury history, it’s like asking Brodie Croyle to play the toughest, nastiest spot on the defensive line.

by JacinB on Oct 21, 2009 9:27 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

With our O-Line

I’d say Croyle plays the offensive equivalent of NT ;)

But I do agree to an extent

It’s hard to believe this guy was the best FA player available. I guess they’d rather go with known vs. unknown.

by Chieffan_Toby on Oct 21, 2009 9:28 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

Why?

It’s not like it’s inaccurate.

You mean to tell me that there were no other NTs anywhere in the League that have, at the very least, the same basic skill set that this guy has and the ability to stay healthy? I don’t buy it.

Hell, sign an undrafted free agent out there who played NT in college last year but didn’t get picked up by any teams. At the very least, you’ll have the same basic level of skills without the long injury history and you might just find a diamond-in-the-rough prospect that can be with the team long term.

Instead, Pioli stuck close to home and went with what he knew despite all of the downside and the non-existant obvious upside.

We're talking about a warm body here.

What are the odds that he sees the field in anything except emergency situations?

by mushin on Oct 21, 2009 9:34 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

How many snaps did Tank take last week?

That’s how many, roughly, we’re expecting this guy to play.

Ron Edwards can’t and won’t be on the field all the time. He can’t. If he is, we’ll need this injury-prone, out of the NFL entirely twice in the last five seasons and on the injured reserve for the three others “warm body” to play every down because Edwards will get hurt, too.

by JacinB on Oct 21, 2009 9:38 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Don't see it. There is no way that they are putting him in that often after 2 days of practice

I expect we’ll see him once or twice. The Defense is going to have to go to more of a base 4-3 or nickle look with 2 DT’s.

The Chiefs are on their way to an 11-5 season...I think....

your saying they are going to change the defense this week b/c they traded a key player and signed a no name? they will stick to the plan and he will be out there on the field

I think he's saying

they used the nickel look a fair amount last weekend, and it worked well… so it’s Edwards for most snaps, nickel when he’s out

Awesome.

So we spend the whole off-season revamping the Defense to go 3-4 “hybrid” and get rid of a bunch of “warm bodies” who were only here to play 4-3, pass over a bunch of other good “warm bodies” in the draft who were 4-3 players, only to get midway into the season, trade off one of our NTs for a late round draft pick and, as a result, now have to shift back to 4-3 which we now may or may not have the personnel to play effectively … ?

Genius. Sheer friggin’ genius.

I really hope our coaches and general management are smarter than that.

by JacinB on Oct 21, 2009 9:51 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Your lookin at this wrong.

The coaching staff went through almost half the season evaluating their young NT/DT giving him every opportunity to win the job.

He couldn’t get the job done and the Chiefs, contrary to most pundits, are not playoff bound.

Get something for him now.

Find someone who can help you at times to run the 3-4 so you can continue to evaluate your defensive talent.

Use your 5th rounder that you just got for a DT that doesnt fit to manuever in the draft and find someone who does fit your plan

Suh is not a defensive tackle. He is a 3-4 defensive end, which we already have in Dorsey and Jackson. A LOT of money is invested into those two, and it wouldn’t make any sense to invest a TON of money in 3 defensive ends.

That would probably be Cody. Suh would probably be a 3-4 DE.

I’m afraid that’s the case and that prospect doesn’t excite me. I’d rather go for Berry or Mays. Now, if we trade down, get extra picks, and take Cody… maybe we’re talking.

Who gives a shit if he played for the Patriots

I am so sick of listening to everyone bitch anytime anyone the Chiefs are even thinking of looking at once played for the Patriots. I understand UC’s point about closing the team off to other talent and I think it is a valid point. But there is also over reation going on.

It makes sense for Pioli to pick up guys he knows a little something about rahter than some guy he has never seen play. Should he ALWAYS pick up ex Pats? No. Of course not but simmer down already.

This guy is obviously here as an emergency back up. He will probably get in 5 snaps a game if Edwards needs a break so I am not too worried about his injury history.

… while ignoring a multitude of guys from OTHER teams who could easily be AS GOOD or BETTER … he doesn’t know for sure, but he locks out those possibilities by going back to the same “scrap heap” time after time

here’s a guy, Smith, who hasn’t played since who knows when … injury prone, not good enough or healthy enough after a couple of years with the Saints to make it with Oakland, Tampa Bay and New England …

so we want/need this guy … WHY??? sorry, Patrick, gotta totally disagree with ya on this one … this is beyond ridiculous

tell us, oh wise one,
while ignoring a multitude of guys from OTHER teams who could easily be AS GOOD or BETTER

who are some of these players that make up the multitude that could easily be as good or better. (if their only as good, what difference does it make?)
you make the assumption that he never LOOKS anywhere else because he doesn’t sign players from other teams. (except for goff, thomas, toomer, lelie, engram, et al. how are those players working out?) this complaint is getting old because it’s stupid. look at all of the first year coaches/gm’s out there and see how many players from their previous teams they bring with them. i think you’ll see it’s a completely common phenomenon

it may be "common" but that doesn't make it a brilliant move

especially in the case of a guy who hasn’t played in 6 yrs, including a couple of years out of football entirely before he came back to football to be placed on … injured reserve

and THIS is what makes you think signing the guy is some sort of brilliant tactical move?

i'm refering to the general

complaint of pioli signing guys he’s familiar with. i don’t know enough about this guy to feel good or bad about it. i doubt it’s brilliant but it will probably be serviceable, which is all tank really was. i generally like to wait until things come to fruition before i’m overly critical. you avoided the question i asked you. who should they have signed? remember, by your rules, he can have no pioli, belichick, parcells, haley connection. so i’m curious who out there meets this criteria or if you’re just bitching because you have the opportunity

http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2009/10/20/1093860/dts-on-the-practice-squad-of-3-4

The following are JUST 3-4 guys …
NE – TItus Adams – 6’4" 305
NE – Darryl Richard – 6’4" 290
NYJ – Antonio Garay – 6’3" 303
CLV – Carlton Powell – 6’2" 300
DEN – Everette Pedescleaux – 6’4" 312
GB – Anthony Toribio – 6’1" 304
SF – Khalif Mitchell – 6’5" 316

so wow, gee … I guess there ARE other people out there … INCLUDING other NE Pats players who, I’m guessing, actually have SOME time NOT on the IR list the last 6 years … sure, I could be wrong, but a guy with the last 5 yrs being IR or totally out of football doesn’t inspire me to think he’s the best thing since sliced bread (or Tank or Pollard for that matter)

because 6 years ago, they were in high school. i’m just saying you are complaining about a player you know nothing about (except he’s been injured) and suggesting we pick up other players you know nothing about. (including their injury histories) you also forget that if we pick them off a practice squad from another team, they have to be on our active roster for 4 games, i think. we don’t know if they even plan on keeping smith for more than a couple weeks while they continue to look for someone better

Kenny...

when he was healthy for the saints his stats are not that bad. in 10 starts he accumulated 69 tackles and 4.5 sacks. That is better than Tank if I am not mistaken.

I have no issues with what he did with the Saints ... none at all

… and this has nothing to do with Tank (other than a backup thing) – my point is: that was so long ago it’s ridiculous to think he has anywhere close to the same skills, on top of the fact that he’s so injury prone that he hasn’t been on active list since 2003 on top of 2 years totally out of football …

now, given ALL that, do you REALLY HONESTLY TRULY deep down in your soul BELIEVE that he’s THE BEST OPTION out of ALL the available guys? THE BEST?

It really doesn't matter

that you can pull up a list of available NTs. This is because you know absolutely squat about any of them.

Pioli may or may not, but one thing is certain, guys like Pioli maintain databases on players he encounters. Every bit of information about each one of them gets entered into the db. He knows more about their physical attributes, how they handle certain situations, their attitudes, injury concerns, what kind of beer they like, etc.

When it comes to paring down that list, he will go with those whose benefits outweigh the costs and will select the one with the highest benefit:cost ratio.

If it comes down to a couple of guys, one of whom you have volumes of information on and the other is unknown, you are unable to make a fair assessment; i.e. the unknown risks involved with the other choice could outweigh the benefit. Selecting him, then, would be a complete gamble… Pioli doesn’t take blind bets.

If you actually read what I wrote, I never indicated that he only moves on sure things (whatever that means anyways). Only that his action is predicated upon setting himself, and the Chiefs, up for the greatest chance of success. This is accomplished by acting on the most complete set of information.

Or ...

C: Instead of giving injury prone Kenny Smith snaps in practice and a place on the team, move him immediately to the Injured Reserve (as, let’s be honest, he’ll get there by next week anyway) and give those snaps to Marlon Favorite to allow him to play as Edwards’ backup and then look for an offensive lineman to fill Favorite’s spot on the practice squad.

you guys just like to complain

we’re talking about a 2nd string NT. no one is expecting this guy to be a savior of any sort. you act like there’s just a cellar full of good football players sitting around waiting for the chiefs to call, if only they’d stop looking at former patriots. if you can’t provide better players by name, you should really just say, you don’t know. if the guy gets hurt and can’t play his 5-10 snaps a game, then it will be a worthless signing. otherwise, i don’t see how it is really anything more than filling out the roster

This Kenny Smith is the 32-year old semi-retired football player out of Mississippi and the University of Alabama. Smith has not played in an NFL regular season game since the 2003 season. That’s six years off the field. Smith was with the New Orleans Saints at the time, where he was a third-round draft selection in the 2001 NFL Draft.

Was a blue chip # 1 DT out of HS… starts are hard to justify when he only started 17 games and DT stats are not off the chart too. Plus, he had to share them with Dorsey who was a beast.

Freaking out over nothing

A lot of you guys are freaking out over nothing. This is a great signing, in my opinion. Ron Edwards hasn’t played too bad at nose tackle. He’s going to take 75% of the snaps. The Chiefs just need a body to step in and take a few snaps here and there.

Smith doesn’t have to stay healthy for a full season. He just needs to stay healthy enough to play a few snaps per game. And if Ron Edwards goes down with injury, then you need Smith to play the rest of the game and then you go out to the waiver wire and find somebody else.

It’s a good signing. At this point in free agency, we’re not going to find a good nose tackle. All we need is a sub to take a few occasional snaps.

You’ll have to forgive me if filling key defensive positions with guys we grab off the waiver wire the week before doesn’t appeal to me all that much. Especially when it appears that the best guy we can find to fill in now from the waiver wire is Kenny “Injured Reserve” Smith.

Re: JacinB

I understand where you’re coming from. But Tank wasn’t doing much on the Chiefs’ roster anyway. Smith isn’t here to fill in a key defensive position. He’s there to take a few snaps so that Edwards doesn’t have to play the entire game.

Smith is a backup NT. He’s not going to be asked to play more than a few snaps per game. And he has experience at the position, so it’s not like we have to worry about him taking a long time to learn what he’s doing.

He’s a backup stopgap. If Favorite shows anything, then he’ll leapfrog Smith onto the roster. Win-win.

by Jon Yoon on Oct 21, 2009 10:02 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Tank did have 22 tackles.

by NJ Chiefs Fan on Oct 21, 2009 10:04 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

probably not

But tackle stats are over-rated. If you’re on the field for 100 plays there will be a tackle everytime there isn’t a TD. I don’t trust those stats at all.

Re: Best NT available?

His role is to step in and in 4 days, be ready to play nose tackle for the Chiefs.

We’ve got one guy on our practice squad we just brought in who has no idea how to play NT and is no doubt going to be coached up like crazy. You’ve got a whole bunch of other rejects who played 4-3 their entire career.

It’s not a glamorous pick-up, but it might very well be the best available. Again, nobody wants or expects him to start. He just has to play a few snaps a game to keep Edwards fresh.

'Scuse me.

I realize that we’re likely not going to the playoffs.

However, if you’re thinking that KC is full of fans who are going to spend a) time or b) money (on merchandise, tickets, etc.) — especially in this economy where they’re already threatening blackouts due to lack of ticket sales — on a team that has said, at Week 6, “Hey, we give up.” then you’re batshit crazy.

There is nothing that pisses me off more than when a team — my team — walks onto the field and you can tell before the first quarter is over that they’ve already given up.

They don’t get paid millions to be a bunch of f—-in’ quitters. And that goes for the folks up in the front offices, too.

Whether we win our next ten or go 1-15 this year, you damn well better be fielding a team that’s going to compete and you damn well better be doing every damn thing in your power, as Head Coach and as President of Football Operations, to make sure that the team that you put on the field has every damn chance of winning that game.

If that’s not what you’re doing, you better pack up your s—- because, even understanding that we’re not going to the playoffs this year, we are NOT going to stand for that bulls—-.

Every season counts. Every damn season.

Smith may be just for this week

next week we have a bye. I’m guessing since he has played enough in similar schemes that he can learn the job quickly. So they may have signed him just as an emergency for this week and will get someone else in next when they have two weeks to get him ready. They may even promote Favorite (great name).

I just wanted to add the bit about the bye week and the fact that Smith was probably selected because he was the most ready to step in for this week.

I’m not sure what the longer term plan is, but I think having the bye week makes it likely this isn’t the last move here if Smith doesn’t look like a good backup.

Because he's been there for five years straight?

That’s something of an indicator, you know, to his a) ability to step in and play right now and b) what skills he might’ve retained from six years ago when he was a connecting flight short of making it to mediocre.

by JacinB on Oct 21, 2009 1:41 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

no, not 5 straight years on IR, that's ridiculous!

he was retired for TWO of those years

IF he gets hurt again... well, he gets hurt again

they’ll sign someone else, or promote Favorite.

Again, it’s not like Smith is being counted on to start.

And, obviously, Pioli and Haley see enough potential to give him a shot.

They worked out at least 4 DTs if not more… if he wasn’t in shape or able to play, do you really think they’d sign him?

Mike Mamula springs to mind

You should NEVER mention combine workouts in the 3rd year of a players career. If you are there is a problem.

Happen to remember Seymor’s workout numbers from his combine?

The original reason Tank was pulled was he took plays off

It doesn’t matter if he’s a great athlete if he takes plays off…see Julius Peppers.

who cares

a lot of guys are rated high; they don’t always pan out in the NFL. I think is was just that he was the strongest at the combine. It really just matters who fits your team, and if they don’t and you can get a pick for them then you do it, period.

To say the guy will just go in for a play or two to spell Edwards

may be accurate. And he may be injury prone. But the real question should be, when he is in the game can he make a play? If he makes the tackles when needed fine. If he misses and the other team capitalizes with this guy in the game, then shame on Pioli!

Denver’s 6-0 and they ARE for real. that’s a super coached team right there…they are going to be a nemesis for us for years to come now that they got josh McDaniels. He learned from the master and their winning our division period.

we can’t win a wildcard at this point either so it’s ok…let them bring in a car wash boy if they want…

you have to have a URL.

Usually get it by finding an online image ans clicking full size. Then copy the link for the image from the browser. Then when you are in a comment click the image button (may get a pop up depending on security settings to allow scripted windows). A window should pop up and you paste the URL into it. Remember you can always preview the comment to see if it works.

Thanks saskwatch.

I was in the same boat with my retarded little bro kray! Appreciate the answer!

Thanks kray for asking the question that I wasn’t brave enough to because I was scared everyone would think I was ignorant! :)

If you have one of your own pictures to post it is a little more complicated.

You will have to post it on an online service like photobucket to get a URL.

Thanks again!

That was really the information that I needed because I’ve got a lot of funny photos that I’ve saved to my pictures, so now I’ll find a place to put them online & I’m in business. Appreciate the help kind sir!

or

right click an image and select view image

This regieme

has thrown in the towel. They have a 63mil QB who is learning on the job. The defense looks pretty good but is now 1 player away from becoming the worst.

The Chiefs have replaced the Lions as the laughing stock of the entire NFL. I hope the commissioner doesn’t take away our franchise. (over a 5th round pick)

CRY BABIES

Have faith we will be ok. We have a weapon and his name is succop. let him kick the ball and score. if grampa is not able to play without getting hurt . we move dorsey to NT. not worried about D line worry about O line. so they got a # 5 pick for tank got a fill in for 10-15 plays in his short time here. too bad they could not of gotten rid of L J.
