Thoughts on Gresham...
So I've been doing some thinking about the 2010 draft (I know same old stuff...but just want some opinions). As I see it right now, if we draft in the top five I say take one of the OT's or Taylor Mays. Kind of a no brainer there I feel like. But if we happen to win a few more games and end up drafting somewhere arond #10 or so, what do you all think about taking TE Jermaine Gresham from OK? Not only would he help our o-line, but he'd give Cassel another good target to throw at. Kind of like killing two birds with one stone wouldn't it be? Anyway just wanted to see what everyone thought about this...all opinions are welcome!

oh btw scout.com lists him as the 14th best player overall…#1 TE
by chiefdoc on Oct 20, 2009 4:39 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
could still get an OT or maybe Berry at #10
I think that has to be the focus
an upgrade at TE is a “nice to have”
* "I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"
* the LB corps may become the biggest strength of the Chiefs in 2009
* The OL is NOT as bad as you think it is... give it time, and you'll see improvement this season

You think Berry will still be around at the #10 slot?
From everything I’ve read re early draft boards, probably not. Assuming the Chiefs end up with at most 4-5 wins this year, I doubt that they’ll be in the top 5. Detroit &Tampa Bay very likely will pick before KC and aren’t in the market for new QB’s, so I think there’s a chance that they take Berry. Admittedly, that’s high for a safety, so maybe if KC picks somewhere in the 6-9 range they will get lucky and Berry will slide.
I agree that TE in low first round is a no-no.

who knows at this point?
The Raiders could take a QB or Mays
The Rams should take a QB
The Bucs could take Suh
The Browns… not sure
the Lions? not sure

I’m a little scared by his injury but he’s I think if he can come back the same as he was he’ll be a stud in the NFL, but I don’t feel like there is a top 5 caliber or even top 10 OT in this draft so we’re picking at 10 i think we reach a little for an OT.

Okung is top 5
Baluga top 10 or 15… but so was Oher, and he worked out pretty darn good

I havent seen Okung play since the Georgia game, and he looked pretty good, but im not willing to just give up on Albert at LT and move him, and I don’t think Okung fits anywhere but LT. Ive seen Iowa a couple times and Buluga hasn’t impressed me at all I’d be suprised if he’s rated that high at the end of the year. The only OT i would want in the 10-15 area would be Trent Williams because he we know he can play both sides at a high level.
by JrGrayson on Oct 20, 2009 5:05 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah.. I gotta admit i haven't really seen either play
just looking at draft projections.
If they draft an OT in the first round, it HAS to be a guaranteed starter at LT… and Albert should move to G.
Otherwise, they can get depth at OT in the mid to later rounds, and draft the best C and G they can get.

I think Albert will be fine I just think he’s had some trouble adjusting to the weight loss. I can’t imagine him playing so well last year was just a fluke. I don’t mind spending a mid-first on a starting tackle in our case because our line is horrible. I think of our 1st 3 pick two of them have to be on the O-line.

I dont know how to edit, but I meant to say starting right tackle

But, I agree in theory…
however, I have hope that O’Callaghan is the RT for this team going forward.
So, they just need a C and RG (as of today)
and a LG (at some point to replace Waters)
Ndukwe or Alleman could very well be the RG…
so, IF they can draft the BEST center out there, and get him to start from day one… the line could be pretty solid again.
IF they get the best Center and a top Guard, they could upgrade 2 of the starting positions and/or trade Waters.

I think Albert will be a "decent" left tackle
However, he would be a dominant LG. Therefore, it would statnd to reason to move Albert inside where he can “dominate”.
Keys to a ridiculously fantastic O-line?
1. Move Albert inside to LG
2. Draft LT
3. Draft C
4. Draft RG
5. I truly believe we are set at RT with O’Callaghan.
Not too bad when you look at it. 3 solid draft picks (which we have) and we are well on are way. The rest of the O-lineman that are currently on the team will provide pretty good depth for the aforementioned O-line

well...
that would be the 1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks spent on OL?
with one 2nd rounder left for a LB or S ?
I could live with that…
I’d LOVE it if they still took Berry in the first, stole a LT in the 2nd, C in the 2nd, G in the 3rd…
OR, IF they got the LT and the C… the G could come later in the draft, as Waters?, Ndukwe, Alleman, Brown, Niswanger?, Smith? could hold down one of the starting Guard spots

A good plan
But no way Berry falls to the second round. And it might be my lack of info on the draft, but it seems like LT is the safest pck in the first round, along with the fact that not too many legitimate LTs fall to the 2nd and beyond. So when Pioli calls and asks for my opinion in April, I will tell him the following
1st round – LT
2nd round – NT
2nd round – S
3rd round – C
4th round and beyond – RG, RB, LB, WR, (not necessarily in that order).

He didnt say anything about Berry is the 2nd round..
Me and stag have talked about Berry and him being our favorite, we know he doesnt touch pick 6.

There are too...
many good RGs out there in free agency (C Chester, Lutui) to spend a draft pick on. I think Okung is legit. I don’t know about his character, but his frame and athletic ability are freakish. I think we should draft Okung in the 1st and move Albert to LG and make Waters our stop-gap C. I also think we should use our 5th for depth (Capers, WV). Check this line out.
LT Okung, Albert, Capers
LG Albert, Alleman
C Waters, Alleman
RG Lutui, Nudukwe
RT O’Callaghan, C Brown
We then use our next 4 picks on improving our DL, WR, LBs, and S.
Terrence Cody (NT, Alabama)
Goldan Tate (WR, Notre Dame)
Brandon Lang (OLB, Troy)
Myron Rolle (S, Florida St) – Took a year off to study at Cambridge
Selvish Capers (OT, WV)
LeRoy Vann (CB/KR, Florida A & M)
I think we will have to find some more vetern talent at LB in free agency. I really hope we land one big name like a Karlos Dansby from Arizona.

Bulaga has had a thyroid issue.
Missed a few games and is just now getting back into shape. I wouldn’t evaluate his play until the end of the season. I suspect he will be back to great shape.
I remember Dawson to Taylor, Kenney to Carson, and Blackledge catching the snap in his facemask. Seen it all...

I saw the Texas-Oklahoma game this weekend, was not impressed with Williams
Not clear to me that Williams has the foot speed for edge rushers in the NFL. Check out Wes at National Football Post, he was also unimpressed. Based on what I saw Saturday, I expect Williams to slide out of the first round.

Williams is falling...
Many now view him as a strictly RT prospect same as Ciron Black. Could change again before the draft, last summer he was ahead of Okung according to some.

Personally I hope we would not take a TE in the 1st round.
We have much bigger needs, and there are other TE that you can get later. I would like to see them get Tony Moeaki from Iowa. He can block and still make the catch down field. Got to admit I’m a Hawkeye homer though.
by Helmets on Oct 20, 2009 4:53 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
sportsline has him as a 7th rd/ UDFA prospect
I’d be fine with a TE in that range… though they have one in O’Connell…

I think he will be moving up the draft boards.
I agree with you but I think he is a better TE than O’Connell, but to be fair I haven’t seen that much out of him. I would not be afraid to spend 1 of our 5th rounders on Moeaki.

yeah... those extra picks help with some flexibility
I would like to get a GREAT blocker at the TE position… which should be available in the 5th or even later, if they wanted to trade down

as for 2010 … O-Line O-Line O-Line O-Line O-Line O-Line O-Line O-Line please

The draft is always hard to even speculate about now.
Don’t know the underclassmen coming out, and more importantly, you don’t know who you will lose or gain in free agency. We might sign a top tackle, guard, or center thus changing our needs in the draft. Definitely need a safety at some point and probably a RB unless Smith comes back and does something.
I remember Dawson to Taylor, Kenney to Carson, and Blackledge catching the snap in his facemask. Seen it all...

Mays is pretty overrated, according to several USC homers.
I’d rather have Eric Berry. Seems like a more complete recruit to me.
Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes; after that, who cares?! He's a mile away and you've got his shoes!

Berry is the man
I think that’s the absolute best #1 pick this team could make.
could change the whole defense for the better.
Then, draft 3 O-Linemen in the 2nd-5th rounds… C, G, backup OT
Get a pass rushing OLB in the 2nd, and maybe an ILB in the 4th or 5th…

Top 8 tackles according to scout.com
Russell Okung SR 6-5/300/- Oklahoma State
Trent Williams SR 6-5/290/- Oklahoma
Selvish Capers SR 6-5/298/- West Virginia
Ciron Black SR 6-5/322/- LSU
Charles Brown SR 6-6/295/- USC
Adam Ulatoski SR 6-8/310/- Texas
Zane Beadles SR 6-4/308/- Utah
Sam Young SR 6-8/320/- Notre Dame
Okung and Williams projected as Top 10,
Capers, Black, Brown and Ulatoski projected later in the first round
I think there is some O-line talent in this draft.

Those are only the seniors...
Learn the name Nate Solder JR Colorado 6’9 something like 310. He is a converted TE that runs a 4.8 40 and is projected @ LT but could play RT. You might actually be able to get him in the late 1st round early 2nd. I would be happy if they got him and either Mike Johnson, Lutai, or O Dowd with our other 2nd rounder. If Greshan Fell to a late 1st and we could trade up and get him for a cheap mid round pick and a 2nd then I wouldnt care getting him. Otherwise I agree it would only be a luxury. Berry is the best pick, Safest Pick, and one of the most talented players. If we dont have a top 5 pick though. We wont get Okung, Berry, Suh. They will all be off the board. I have a feeling we will pick in the 7-9 range honestly. I think it would be easy to trade down and get Solder or a different tackl. But if were in the top 5 definitly Berry is our guy. Mays is overratted.

Just relaying what's on scout.com
They all fall under # 32 in overall rankings. I’m sure other sites have players ranked differently. I wouldn’t put much stock in a mock draft right now as draft positions are far from determined. Some teams will reach, or fill an obvious need etc..

If its a TE we're talking about...
I’d definitely roll my dice on Anthony McCoy from USC he reminds me of a cross between Antonio Gates/Shannon Sharpe except bigger and more athletic.
or
Tony Moeaki from Iowa. He’s a massive specimen of a man and is a well established blocker with the ability to split the seam and make plays down field if asked to.
Both guys are outstanding blockers (which we need) and have the hands and adequate speed as well as size to make plays down field.

Not in the first round of course...
but if we spent late 2nd or a 3rd on one of them I wouldn’t be disappointed.

I like both those TE
It’ll be interesting to see how they finish the year.
McCoy is getting his first on field looks this year, and appears to be the most complete TE playing at this point.
Moeaki has looked like a 1st round guy lately, hope he can stay on the field and off the training room table.

we need a DT or Berry from tennesee in th first round next year then go after o line in th second no one seems to realize our defense is one of if not the worst in the league we need playmaker at D before offense
by bflowers24probowl on Oct 20, 2009 9:27 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
yeah, our defense is "one" of the worse in the league,
but you could legitimately argue that our O-line is THE worst in the league. LT with the first pick, no-brainer

You can address the Line in the later rounds...
Plus, The best OT will go 1 or 2 overall. Would you take the 2nd best LT over Berry when we could get a G and a C in the 2nd and even another G in the 3rd.

Gresham
Due to his injury, he will probally be a late 1st round or early second round selection. I’m a pretty optimistic fan, but I don’t think we will be picking late in the 1st round unless we’ve traded back a couple times in the 1st. So unless we’re talking about our 2nd round picks… I don’t think Gresham is our guy.
