WEEI: Source Says Galloway to Workout with the Chiefs

5 months ago: New England Patriots wide receiver Joey Galloway (13) runs from one drill to another during practice at the team's football facility in Foxborough, Mass., Tuesday morning, June 2, 2009. (AP Photo/Stephan Savoia)

Update 4:00 PM: Steve Duemig of WDAE is disputing this report

Christopher Price of WEEI reports that a source tells him receiver Joey Galloway is on his way to Kansas City for a workout with the Chiefs.

Update 12:45 PM: Sirius NFL Radio and 610 Sports here in KC are also reporting this.

Galloway was released today by the New England Patriots, who are causing the rumor mill to churn by releasing three other players including Tully Banta-Cain (UpdatePats re-signed Banta-Cain), Eric Alexander and Michael Matthews.

Galloway is a 38 year old 15 year NFL veteran.  He was originally drafted by the Seattle Seahawks eighth overall in the 1995 draft.  In 2000, the Dallas Cowboys traded two first round picks for the rights to Galloway.  In 2004, he moved to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before being released in February of this year.

He later signed a one year deal with the Patriots but has been inactive the last three games.  The word is that he was inactive because of a lack of production and difficulty learning the Patriots offense.

He had just seven receptions for 67 yards this season.

Since Galloway was released before 3:00 PM CST today, he is not subject to waivers which means he can now choose his own team.  Classy move, Pats.

Age

Kurt Warner proved age is meaningless.

So does Brett Favre.

Yeah, the receiver position is very different than QB, but it’s not like Galloway is going to be signed to a long term contract.

He would be there to help the maturation of other Chiefs players.

on field leadership?

meh

Favre just stands there and hands the ball to AP, watches the defense do their thing and every once in a while throws the ball with his shoulder that is held together by a couple of rubber bands.

Age isn’t meaningless when you are trying to out run and jump a 25 year old corner back.

I was commenting on YOUR comment about Herm's players

and the reality is, as some of us noted last night after the Tank trade, that Herm only had ONE year of his picks (the other 2 years were Carl’s picks) … and of those Herm picks from last year, eight are still with the team

it was Carl who wanted to bring in the older, washed up vets over and over again … Pioli has already shown too much of a propensity for doing that himself, and you build a team thru the draft, not FA pickups of washed up, over the hill players … which JGalloway surely is, just as AToomer is, and ZThomas and …

When i used to live in Washington and played pee wee, our team made it to the championships and after our game was the seahawks game. We got to sit on the sidelines with the whole seahawks team. I remember a catch that Galloway made and it looked like he did a front flip over a defender and scored a td. It was pretty cool. It don’t think he has it anymore but he sure is a stud for stickin around…just like favre.

He probably could...

But how often would he actually get on the field? Extra receiver sets take away FBs, RBs and TEs. That means that Cassel loses protection and adds another read to his receiver progression. He’s already staring down Bowe and Wade. I’m not sure if Galloway would make enough of an impact to matter. If he replaced Engram or … who else is there? I forget. They never get on the field. Anyways. if he replaced one of them I could care less.

I Don't Know If Anyone Saw This Before

But bringing in yet another failed ex-Patriots player for a tryout tells me that Mike Lombardi at the National Football Post is definitely onto something in regards to the Chiefs’ rebuilding effort.

As many of you know, I love willingness to change the roster, to make moves until you find the right combination of players who can help a team win. I’m all about the "good to great" model. But where I have a problem is when a team takes too many players from its previous teams. Every time the Chiefs take an ex-Patriots player or even an ex-Cardinal, they show a lack of diversity in their personnel acumen. The locker room will get the feeling the team is only interested in adding more ex-Pats or ex-Cards — not in improving its talent base but improving its familiarity base. This can be very disruptive to a team, so the front office must guard against the temptation to bring in a familiar player as opposed to continue digging and finding the right player.

I call this my "Peter Frampton Theory." Frampton had one great album back in the 1970s, "Frampton Comes Alive," but that was all he had. It was all he knew, and most of all, it was all anyone expected from him. He never had another hit, never had another big seller, so he had to rely on that one album. One-team personnel men don’t work well. They need to broaden their scope.

You want to create a culture where the players are always asking, "Where did they get this guy from?" You want to show the players that you know talent as the general manager. You want them to respect your evaluations so that when changes are needed, they accept the soundness of your decisions. As much as the players are showcasing their talents to the staff, the staff is showcasing their talents to the players and the rest of the league.

So I say to Haley and the Chiefs, keep reshaping, but learn a new song.

Are Pioli and Haley simply incapable of finding talent outside of familiar channels? Because it’s looking like that’s the case, and if so we’re in trouble…because while you might never strike it rich digging through someone else’s trash, you’re a hell of a lot less likely to strike it rich digging through your own trash. Most of what Haley’s picked up are guys who’ve already shown they can’t cut it playing in a “Patriots” system.

Predictions for 2009

1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
6. The Chiefs will go 7-9 in 2009, good for 2nd in the AFC West. Revision: We go 5-11 and finish behind Oakland.
7. Ryan Succop will not perform better in 2009 than Connor Barth did in 2008.
8. The Chiefs will have a bottom 10 defense this year.
9. RB will be a problem area this season on offense.

But from what I see he only grabs younger players (prospects, as it were) with New England and Arizona ties. When he goes outside of that system, he only seems interested in grabbing “proven” (meaning washed-up) veterans. That to me indicates that his personnel system has problems.

By Way Of Historical Comparison

Jimmy Johnson did the same thing his first year with the Cowboys…favoring U of Miami players with whom he’d worked previously (resulting in an unnecessary QB controversy between Troy Aikman and Steve Walsh). To his credit, though, Johnson realized pretty quickly that his strategy was not working out and he ditched it by his second year there and went for talent over familiarity.

Thing is, I don’t think Haley is that smart…nor do I really think that winning is a priority for him. Most of his actions seem to be tailored to instill a culture of obedience rather than a culture of winning (even if it means downgrading talent). And frankly, obedient but untalented teams don’t really win a lot of games in the NFL.

Nope

I just see them as mismanaging my football team. That’s plenty to criticize on. And frankly, I don’t believe in giving anyone in the NFL a pass on all their moves for a full season because they’re new. If a new guy is screwing up, he’s screwing up…the only slack I’m willing to cut them is not calling for them to be fired immediately (and I haven’t done so for Haley or Pioli yet).

B-I-N-G-O

I concur 100% UC. Based on the games thus far, and Haley’s mediocre playcalling, it does not look like he is trying to win any of these games. I’m glad we got a tickmark in the win column, but come on Todd. How about we amend the current playbook and get some plays in here that will benefit the players and the overall team?

Put this in your pipe and smoke it:
1. Chiefs will be at least 8-8 and vie for division champs
2. DJ will break out and finally have his year
3. LJ returns to form
4. DBowe drops will reduce

Absurd

Yeah Haley is throwing games…are you kidding me? Come on Chiefs fans don’t sully our reputation with this nonsense. First, these players have had less than 2 months to learn Haley’s system so he’s had to KISS (Keep it Simple Stupid) with schemes and play-calling. Second, our line stinks so that hampers his ability to get super creative on anything but quick hitting plays. Notice this past week he installed bootlegs and sprint outs to help Cassel out? He’s trying to win every week and this nonsense that he is throwing games in his rookie season is beyond ludicrous.

by Ryan in Nixa on Oct 20, 2009 1:26 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Re-Read My Comment

I’m not claiming he is throwing games at all. I said that it looks like he is not trying to win with his playcalling. The stupid-ass drop back and handoff to a sitting duck RB play is idiotic, ditch it. And calling running plays on 3rd and long is stupid as well. I’m not saying his playbook is crap, I’m just saying he is not calling the right plays when they are needed most. Seriously, almost every single 1st down is a run. I’m not saying all, but the majority. Try stretching the field or simple patterns where the WR cuts immediately across the field to gain 5 yards or so. And when we are 3rd and long, stick more than 2 WRs on the field if a pass is called.

Put this in your pipe and smoke it:
1. Chiefs will be at least 8-8 and vie for division champs

Do you know why we dont throw down the field? You think Cassel is getting sacked a lot now? Imagine a five to seven step drop pass pattern… 22 sacks becomes 40 and we are on our third QB. Like I said, he’s hand-cuffed in his play calls by the o-line. If you want to blame PIOLI for the o-line, well that’s your prerogative but blaming Haley for bad play calls is not seeing the root cause.

I can promise you based on his past play-calling on other teams this is not his MO….but given that the o-line sucks I he’s hamstrung.

Are you allowed to call a play

where the other team is required to fall down for 30 seconds after the snap? I don’t think there are too many plays in the book that will do much more with our talent on OL.

I remember Dawson to Taylor, Kenney to Carson, and Blackledge catching the snap in his facemask. Seen it all...

Is There Such A Play?

I’d be all for implementing that one. Seriously though, I know our line is porous, but Haley needs to adjust his playcalling to accommodate a weak line. Like I said above, quick-outs or crossing patterns where Cassel can immediately zing one for a 4-yard gain. Hell, 3 of those is a 1st down every time. That is, if our WR corps can hang on to the ball.

Put this in your pipe and smoke it:

But Pioli is

only signing them for one year at a time isn’t he? They seem to just be stopgaps for depth & improving from the bottom up just in case someone gets hurt.
For those purposes, you get reserves that you are familiar with & whom are proven (or rather known) quantities. I hope these veteran signings don’t continue after we get a core nucleus with a balanced mixture of young & veteran, hence the accumulation of draft picks.

He Isn't Tying Us To Those Guys For Years

Which is definitely an improvement over Peterson. But my point is that he’s not really looking for young talent outside of his little network, and that’s a problem. Because most of the young talent outside of that network has already shown that they’re not a good fit for the systems that Parcells, Belichick and Haley run.

It’s like Lombardi said…they’re signing based on familiarity, not talent. And at some point you need to be able to identify talent that other people have overlooked, not dig through scraps that competent evaluators of talent like Parcells and Belichick have already rejected.

I am hoping

that after the draft next year, for which they are accumulating a bunch of picks, that they are a step closer to being able to fill some holes from free agents that they aren’t familiar with & Pioli & Co. can take some gambles on others cast-offs! Plus we should have more talent to use as leverage in being more active in trading for needs.

I Hope So Too

That’s the big wild card…what will the next offseason look like? If they do change up their strategy from this year, we will probably see improvement. If not, then it’ll be another long year in 2010.

I have my concerns that Haley’s style is going to attract very many free agents, though…especially if he doesn’t show improvement in his game management. People will cut a jerk a break if he gets results and people will cut a bad coach a break if he’s nice…but if you’re a jerk who doesn’t get results, then people are probably not going to give you the benefit of the doubt for long.

unless your wheeling and dealing like redskins your pretty much going to be feasting off old talent or getting some one really unproven working at chubbies strip joint. I see it as we are just plugging wholes right now. the real payday is collecting draft picks and collecting winners on draft day. that will be the real payday. so as of now i can deal with players that are familiar with the system just to get by and after this draft we should see some real players that fit our mold for the future.

big home runs. either way we need to pretty much hit on every pick this next draft to really be a competitor in the league . If you look at our team right now we are pretty competitive . And we dont even have players that fit the mold on what we are trying to do. I would have to say we are making progress giving the fact that we are getting guy off the streets and out of retirement homes and still playing pretty decent. soo im excited for this next draft. but like i said we really need to hit home runs on this next draft.

I don't think it says anything bad about Pioli or his system at all.

My gues is that his personnel “system” is exactly what the Pats is: draft talent and let the other teams sort through your garbage. We just aren’t there yet. In the mean time, he is signing players they know rather than signing players they don’t. It’s not like any of these signings are going to make a spit of difference in the season, and most won’t be around afterwards. I have no problem with his approach. I’m tired of sifting through the trash heap.

I remember Dawson to Taylor, Kenney to Carson, and Blackledge catching the snap in his facemask. Seen it all...

But The Young Guys Pioli Signs Already Failed In A Patriots' System

So, as I said, he’s basically digging through his own trash for a bunch of guys who weren’t good enough to get a roster spot on a decent team instead of going through other teams’ castoffs to see if someone’s maybe a better fit with a change of scheme. That’s a limiting strategy, and frankly if he can’t judge talent well enough to find someone outside of his comfort zone who can provide talent then he’s nothing special as a GM.

And aside from Tyson Jackson and Ryan Succop, there isn’t anyone out of Pioli’s first KC draft who’s screaming “talent” right now. Actually, there weren’t a lot of talented guys in his last three draft classes in New England. So unless he starts doing a hell of a lot better than his Peterson-esque draft record of the last four years, we aren’t building a good team by relying on the draft.

I just don't believe there is someone sitting on the couch

that will improve this team. There are 32 teams, someone would have them. You find those “diamonds in the rough” after training camp cuts, not beyond that (normally). Now you would be changing a turd for a turd. You’re basically saying that 32 GM’s have no judge of talent. I don’t believe that.

As far as the drafting goes, it’s kind of hard to judge him after 1. I will say though, that Succop makes a good draft no matter what. How long have we searched for a reliable kicker? How many games have we lost because of it?
Hard to fix a team with 7 picks when you know that only 4, maybe 5 will possibly make an impact in any draft class.

I remember Dawson to Taylor, Kenney to Carson, and Blackledge catching the snap in his facemask. Seen it all...

I'm Not Saying 32 GMs Can't Evaluate Talent

But I am saying that a guy who’s not a good fit for a system that one GM is building may be a fit for another GM’s system and that’s what Pioli should be looking for…not digging through a pile of guys who’ve already played in his kind of system and failed to shine.

Oh, And

Most of the guys he’s brought in from outside the Patriots’ channel are washed-up vets (Thomas, Toomer, Goff, Engram). He’s not really looking for young players from anywhere other than Belichick’s scrap heap. And that’s worrisome…because it’s not like Belichick throws away players with ability all the time. We should be picking through the scrap heaps of organizations that whiff on player evaluations a lot…teams that may have been trying to fit square pegs into round holes. Just because a player washes out in the Raiders’ “system” doesn’t mean he can’t do well in someone else’s system if that system is better suited to his skills and abilities.

I’m glad it’s not just people on AP who’ve noticed this. Hopefully Pioli has noticed it as well.

Not worried.

Lombardi has a point here. But, I suspect this propensity for Pats/Cards will largely disappear after this season. Pioli will have gone through a draft with his own staff and evaluations (and hopefully will mean less holes in the team to fill from FA) and familiarity with players in those other systems will diminish with time.

I'll reserve judgement

until the start of next season. By then Mr. Pioli would have gone through the draft and, by all accounts of the depth, should land more primary pieces for the team. He will also have his opportunity with any available trades and free agents. The roster should be far more ‘their’ team by then and from there we can see for ourselves if he is living up to his reputation.

Trading for linemen isn’t sexy, but it can work. Picking up free agents this late in the season is pointless. There aren’t any possible starters in the Free Agent market anymore.

Don’t touch Galloway. The guy is a solid 33% all the time. He’ll look great at practice, but when people could actually hit him, he’ll drop passes, run bad routes, and post himself on the out-of-bounds line. At least, that’s been our sad, sad experience. I always got the impression he was a "no contact" type of guy.

I remember Dawson to Taylor, Kenney to Carson, and Blackledge catching the snap in his facemask. Seen it all...

Won't Help!

I don’t see any upside, even a band aid fix, in signing him. I like the pick-up of Wade who has contributed immediately, we won’t see this with Galloway. Why are we wasting time with a workout???

Galloway has had no contact from the Chiefs

per ProFootballTalk:

Contrary to a report originating from WEEI in Boston that free-agent receiver Joey Galloway was en route to Kansas City for a workout, Steve Duemig of WDAE in Tampa reports that, as of 4:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Galloway hasn’t heard a peep from the Chiefs.

Galloway became a free agent immediately upon his release from the Patriots.

The Baltimore Ravens reportedly were interested in trading for Galloway. If so, they presumably are interested in signing him as a free agent.
