Worst spin-off of the decade: Joey Tribbiani getting his own show, Heidi Montag's music career or Scott Pioli getting his own team? (Waiting.) Do you need more time? Fine, you can have more time. Just remember, my peeps back in New England always swore that Belichick made every minor/major decision for the Pats -- literally, every single one -- while Pioli was along for the ride like DJ Jazzy Jeff. Actually, that's an insult to DJ Jazzy Jeff. But you get the idea.

His Peeps

Are generally people he knows who work with the local sports teams. He was “The Boston Sports Guy” to start out his career and he’s been pretty wired into all of the Boston teams (except the Bruins).

Predictions for 2009

1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
6. The Chiefs will go 7-9 in 2009, good for 2nd in the AFC West. Revision: We go 5-11 and finish behind Oakland.
7. Ryan Succop will not perform better in 2009 than Connor Barth did in 2008.
8. The Chiefs will have a bottom 10 defense this year.
9. RB will be a problem area this season on offense.

He actually has forgotten more about the Bruins than most people will ever know

He just decided to no longer follow them due to a terrible owner, culminating with giving away Joe Thorton. Now that the Bruins are relevant again, he actually does hockey collums from time to time again.

So we're supposed to believe that Hoodie coached the team...

including the offense and defense AND scouted everyone AND made all the personnel decisions? And people think Haley can’t just coach and do offense? Hmmm…sounds like more BS to make Hoodie out to be better than he really is.

Belicheck has rings to prove he can do all that, Hailey does not. Simple fact.

The Myth of the Hoodie might get exposed this year:)

Maybe Pioli found the time was right to Bail on NE.
NE hasn’t performed this year like years past and trading Seymour might be the tip of a reload on the horizon. We will see if Bellicheck is all soon.

To Be Honest

After all the Belichick “proteges” who’ve flamed out, I wonder if maybe Belichick’s just one of the all-time great coaches who was able to do all of those jobs himself with little help from anyone. There aren’t too many of those…Lombardi, Lambeau, Halas…but they do exist.

Considering how pathetic the team was under Bud Carson and Jim Shofner (aided of course by the sheer incompetence of Art Modell), I probably would have seen Belichick as a major improvement.

SO let me get this straight.

Williamson is calling Pioli a bust after 3 games? Is the guy a moron? This isn’t Madden ’10 where you can have a fantasy draft and manipulate the game so that you have a majority of stars at every position. Pioli is playing the hand he was dealt which by the way was 2-14.

Sounds like the dude didn’t have anything else to write in his little quirky “power poll” so he thought he’d bring out the old NE cliche that Belicheck did everything including teach Tom Brady how to throw the ball.

It’s “Don’t hire people from Belichick’s coaching tree.”

Although it’s still early to give up on Pioli…after all Thomas Dimitroff worked for Belichick too and he’s had success in Atlanta and made some good moves. But Pioli’s first year so far has been far from impressive.

Well...If You're Looking At A 2 For One Deals (Players Or Picks)

They’re not that uncommon.

Jerome Bettis to Steelers – 2nd rounder, 5th rounder to Rams
1st overall pick (Jeff George) to Colts – Andre Rison, Chris Hinton, draft pick to Falcons
Steve Young to Niners – 2nd round pick, 4th round pick to Tampa
Eli Manning to Giants – Philip Rivers and 2 draft picks (Shawne Merriman, Nick Kaeding) to Chargers
Marshall Faulk to Rams – two draft picks to Colts

The results for twofer (or more) trades are pretty mixed. The Steelers won with Bettis, but the Rams (who got two picks) didn’t do anything with them. The Niners got a great QB in Young but he was understudy to Montana for a long time (while Tampa went nowhere). The Chargers ripped off the Giants IMO, but they still haven’t even appeared in a Super Bowl. And Faulk was great for the Rams and helped them win it all whereas the Colts (who got two draft picks) did nothing with them.

Overall, just because you get two of something for one of something doesn’t mean you came out ahead. Or as the old children’s poem “Smart” by Shel Silverstein goes

My dad gave me one dollar bill
‘Cause I’m his smartest son,
And I swapped it for two shiny quarters
‘Cause two is more than one!
And then I took the quarters
And traded them to Lou
For three dimes — I guess he don’t know
That three is more than two!
Just then, along came old blind Bates
And just ‘cause he can’t see
He gave me four nickels for my three dimes,
And four is more than three!
And I took the nickels to Hiram Coombs
Down at the seed-feed store,
And the fool gave me five pennies for them,
And five is more than four!
And then I went and showed my dad,
And he got red in the cheeks
And closed his eyes and shook his head—
Too proud of me to speak!

Sure, Eli has a SB ring, but getting Rivers, Merriman, and Kaeding (3 probowlers) was pretty good. That being said, they probably already have a SB if they keep Brees under centre but I digress.

If The Giants Had Eli And Merriman

I think they have more than one Super Bowl ring.

As for how that relates to Cassel/Vrabel for the 2nd rounder, I think it was a good trade, but then would the Chiefs really be that much worse off if they’d drafted Sanchez and then used the 2nd rounder on an o-lineman? Vrabel was getting cut anyway as a cap casualty because the Pats needed the space. Maybe he ends up here anyway if that happens, maybe not. Just saying, it was a good trade, but not necessarily a huge coup.

Actually

If the Chiefs hadn’t traded away the 2nd for Cassel and Vrabel, they could have gone Sanchez and Maualuga. Which wouldn’t have been too much of a dropoff at QB but would have been an upgrade in the long-term at LB.

That's A Good Point

And it’s what tips the measure in favor of the Cassel/Vrabel trade…but not as much as you might think. Because while we wouldn’t have Jackson, it’s also likely that Maualuga will have a significantly longer career from this season on than Mike Vrabel will. Vrabel was also brought in to improve the team for this season and help make the Chiefs more competitive. Three years from now, Vrabel is probably not going to still be playing here (or if he is, he probably won’t be any good). So with the Cassel trade while the Chiefs ended up with Vrabel/Cassel/Jackson, in 2-3 years when they’re realistically going to have a shot at making a run in the playoffs (assuming Pioli and Haley build a good team) they’re likely only going to have Jackson/Cassel from the deal (with Vrabel’s last years being wasted on a couple of not very good teams). And Jackson/Cassel over Sanchez/Maualuga isn’t that much of a talent disparity.

Of course, as someone else alluded to, Cassel probably has a better chance of succeeding here than Sanchez would have because while he’s got a solid o-line in NY, he’d be running for his life here for his first couple of years and maybe wouldn’t develop. Plus, as a rookie he’d probably need more instruction than Haley’s going to be able to provide (considering he’s pulling triple duty) and Cassel’s a better bet to survive that situation than Sanchez.

Lot of variables when breaking it down.

Also take into consideration

Andy Studebaker (who we got for free) who experienced hastened development for following around one of the if not the singular smartest 3-4 OLB in the league. While it won’t be Vrabel when we should be geared up to make a run it may very well be Studebaker.. Also Hali has been made better for having Vrabel to learn from.

But like you said.. lot’s of factors

Back to the I would rather have Sanchez than Cassel

Haven’t read that line of thought yet.
But a 2nd for a 11-5 QB in the League vs a possible long-shot (very long-shot) Sanchez (remember all the other Chiefs QB draft picks) seems like a great pick to me. Throw-in Vrabel (though slower is smarter than any other choice to play that OLB spot) and we get Jackson who will probably remind a lot of us of Neil Smith when he is done playing.

7. Ryan Succop will not perform better in 2009 than Connor Barth did in 2008.
8. The Chiefs will have a bottom 10 defense this year.
9. RB will be a problem area this season on offense.

3-13? They will beat Kansas City twice, and Oakland 1 more time.

Simmons

First, these safecount.net ads all over the screen are driving me crazy!

Secondly, and more on topic, Simmons 1 month ago was very close to anointing KC as his Super Bowl Sleeper Pick. He said that the Tony G trade was the only thing keeping him from doing this. Now he’s trashing Pioli? He knows about basketball; he’s a genius in that spectrum. However, the only thing he knows about football is how to bet on it. And even that he’s not great at. Heck, 3 years ago his wife got more games right in the season than him by choosing teams that had prettier uniforms and came from cities that she wanted to visit. Listen to his podcasts-whenever he has someone famous on he tries to equate himself to the famous person and immerse himself in a Hollywood scene he clearly doesn’t belong in. And that’s my rant for the day. Good day to you, sir.

by 1kmilesfromkc on Oct 2, 2009 7:16 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

First of all, I'm a huge Simmons fan

But you are right that is wife beat him against the spread a couple years back by picking teams because of prettier uniforms etc, but I think that was a result of him overthinking picks.

I however don’t like how people discount what critics say because it goes against what they think. Isn’t it entirely possible/probable that the Hoodie is the reason for all of Patriots success? Look, Pioli was the sexiest GM candidate in the past 5 years and I’m stoked we got him but his time with the Chiefs has been underwhelming. I don’t think he is above critisism just because of his time with NE.

agreed

I think its too early to say if Pioli is a joke or if he is an excellent GM. But Simmons is a joke of a columnist.

by 1kmilesfromkc on Oct 2, 2009 7:33 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

To call him a columnist is a bit of a stretch

And he admits as much. He’s basically Jim Rome on paper, who talks sports but instead of delving deep into analysis and break down, he compares it to 80’s pulp culture. I find it refreshing, compared to other collumists who all say the same thing.

Haha, wow

First of all, wives win Pick ‘Em contests A LOT. Why? Because it is a lot of luck involved. Don’t knock Simmons because of that, because that is just dumb.

Second, are you criticizing Simmons for changing his mind AFTER watching games?!? Most people have an opinion before the season, and then change it after games have been played. Why? Because one is speculation, the other is fact. Think about it

And third, he’s a page 2 columnist. If you don’t read him often, you won’t understand. So stop trying, and criticizing him.

Steve he's actually quite good

He does too much basketball shit, and he’s a flag waving Patriot’s homer, but his Friday Football collumns are quite good. Thats where I got my last 2 Simmons Fanshots that caused a shitstorm. If you are looking for in depth football analysis, go somewhere else, but his collums are usually a good light read.

Understood

On your first point-it’s all luck. But I’ve been reading his columns and listening to his podcasts for over 3 years now. Haven’t missed a podcast in a year. So yes, I follow him and find him quite amusing. And Bill Simmons has annointed himself the football gambling god. He is very high and mighty and thinks highly of himself. My point is that before you start bragging about how good of a better you are, show some proof. He is yet to do that. Each year he has picked teams, he is slightly higher than 500. That means he makes some cash, but he isn’t an expert.

I’m not criticizing Simmons after watching games. I’m criticizing Simmons after watching THREE GAMES. He has already dismissed Pioli’s entire reputation and managerial skills after three games. He’s a homer, and he doesn’t like Pioli because he isn’t in NE anymore. He loved the dude last year and in previous years. He was one of the people at ESPN that was praising Pioli more than anyone else. It’s simply too early to tell. It’s been 3 games. Heck, Herm Edwards was a joke from day 1 and he got 3 YEARS to prove himself. Bill B had a 36-44 record as a coach in Cleveland, and a 5-11 record his first year in New England. Bottom line is it takes time to see talent. Three games is simply not enough.

And lastly, ESPN’s Page 2 columnists are supposed to be characters that are highly opinionated and more for entertainment value than sport value. Simmons makes crazy claims from time to time and of course we are going to call him out on those. These columnists are expected to be criticized and not taken as seriously as, say, John Clayton. If he wishes to not be criticized or have people state opinions contrary to his own, sportswriting is simply not the career he should have chosen. He is in the public eye, and based on his recent celeb podcasts, is trying to thrust himself into celeb status even more. We can criticize coaches and players but not writers that are opinionated?

Wow, so Pioli went from a gold to pointless in a couple months...

…please, no one man runs a team, Pioli did his part and did it well. Billichick was a failure in Cleveland and so-so in NY, he not god-like. KC wins a few they will be Pioli’s sack again.

I agree but…seriously…it is always the case
Before Belichick, Parcells called the shots
Before Holmgren or Shanahan, Walsh called the shots.
Before Dungy, Noll called the shots.
Before Cowher, Marty called the shots.

This is just bullroar…

yeah you summed it up well...I dont understand why at certain positions and towns they just wont accept the chance of success.

if this were in even Cleveland, and they had pioli/haley you might be hearing different things, but maybe not, maybe the same BS till they prove it on their own.

I continue to question why they get called out, and these rookies and their 60 mil contracts are killin the nfl, we have 1 sack between our last 2 top 5 picks….1 sack? And the problem is a head coach and the GM 3 games into their first jobs as head honcho respectively? sigh

Pioli

Turned down something like $20 MILLION to go GM the Seahawks a few years ago. Does anybody really think he would have the confidence to do that if he wasn’t deeply involved in the decision making in NE? I don’t

I think everyone’s expectations for this year are WAY too high (myself included), and that’s probably been set up by what the Dolphins, Ravens and Falcons did last year. Well, unfortunately for KC we have a really tough schedule (unlike the Phins and Falcons last year) so we don’t have much chance for such a turnaround. BUT, honestly it’s better for us get beaten down by a tough schedule this year and continue to grab top-talent in the ’10 draft than it is to win against a poor schedule and get lower grade talent in the draft….and then fall flat again the next year because of the schedule.

This is so ridiculous

the most wanted GM in all of football in terms of a young guy, who has insane potential and quite the resume, the browns wanted him SO bad this offseason. The hawks went after him after power mike left.

I understand that Bill B makes amazing decisions, knows what hes doing etc, but there are more than just a head coach and even a GM involved in the process of making that team…And honestly if all Pioli did was learn from Bill B, than why is pioli getting trashed 3 games into being a GM with a team that had won 6 games in 2 years?

Many continue to not just question, but flat out claim that Pioli and Haley wont work because Pioli wasnt calling the shots in NE, and Haley is a hothead? Welll so far all of Haley’s former players want to play for him, including the same WR who was there in dallas, including a TE who worked alongside Anquan Boldin…

It just seems like the cool thing to do for these sports writers, the chiefs have a history of not winning…so why not go against the grain of what on paper is an all star front office and claim they will bust? since kc has been terrible for a decade…no playoff wins.

I, believe both will be successful, and if we were dumb enough to let either go, they would turn into a Bill B in terms of success, ala bill leaving the browns.

by SDChief on Oct 3, 2009 12:28 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

do you think pioli would have traded for greg lewis, and cut him so indesivly, sign j galloway, f taylor and chris baker, traded Rich Seymnour. Rape himself on a trade to the Chiefs and turn it in to a safety. Your crazy if you beleive this. The moves made this year dont match the moves made in the past or what Pioli is doing now. The more I see from the hoodie, I think Pioli made all the crucial decisions.

by dougritchey on Oct 3, 2009 12:31 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree, and really, if he did just learn from him, why is that a bad thing?

I cant wait till they turn this thing around, then we will have the youngest trio of owner/gm/head coach with one of the youngest teams in the NFL…thats how you win for 5-8 years, not 1-2….Patience is key, and im ok with that, even if on sundays it gets rough

by SDChief on Oct 3, 2009 12:33 AM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

Yes on the Seymour trade. New England typically doesn’t pay big money to its players (outside of Brady), and Seymour was entering the last year of his contract. Besides, Oakland was giving a FIRST ROUND PICK. That’s a deal that all other 31 GMs make. No brainer.

by T-Rich on Oct 4, 2009 1:07 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

the patriots are are 1-2 and i wouldnt be suprised if they go 1-3. they are right now one win better.

If Pioli has us fooled... We aren't the only ones...

He is a four time NFL executive of the year!

Yeah, BB is very involved, but I don’t think Pioli would have received this honor so many times if he wasn’t as well.

by 3GChief on Oct 3, 2009 6:10 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

As a Royals fan, let me offer one word of caution:

Just because a guy is highly coveted and the hot prospect for teams as a GM, does NOT mean this guy is going to be a great GM. I think it’s too early to judge anything on Pioli, but I wouldn’t blindly follow him because he was once “the no-brainer” for GM.

I used to work with an old man that told me. Son, every workplace has a dumbass, if you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.

wow thats harsh

i thought it was funny though. it’s a little early to judge pioli that way imo.
