October 2009 Clark Hunt Approval Poll
The Kansas City Chiefs owner Clark Hunt hasn't been seen much in the last month, except around here at Arrowhead Pride of course.
Mr. Hunt was kind enough to answer some of our questions and Joel posted the interview in two parts. Here is part one and here is part two.
Hunt also held a fan forum back in September. Here is a snippet:
"The sports business is largely a people business. I feel, to be successful and have a chance to reach our goal of realistically competing for a championship, the most important thing I could do is have the best leadership group in the National Football League.
The first move in that regard was bringing in Scott Pioli as our general manager."
Let us know how you feel about Clark Hunt in the poll below.
August 2009: 95%
July 2009: 94%
June 2009: 90%
May 2009: 91%
April 2009: 96%
March 2009: 94%
Feb. 2009: 91%

Clark's Okay
At least he got rid of one underachieving GM, which is something his dad never did. And if Pioli doesn’t get things turned around, I doubt he’ll leave him in place for a decade whether he likes the guy or not.

Predictions for 2009
1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
6. The Chiefs will go 7-9 in 2009, good for 2nd in the AFC West. Revision: We go 5-11 and finish behind Oakland.
7. Ryan Succop will not perform better in 2009 than Connor Barth did in 2008.
8. The Chiefs will have a bottom 10 defense this year.
9. RB will be a problem area this season on offense.
UC, you know I love ya...
…but Lamar’s unyielding loyalty was a virtue that should – at least in retrospect – be admired, not decried. Complaining that he kept Steadman or Carl around too long is the ULTIMATE

It may, or may not have, caused some less-than-spectacular results at the time…but lets respect a man whose been dead for almost three years, and did more for this city before many of us were even born. There’s no reason to still be complaining about it.
At the end of the day Lamar is the reason we’re all here, and to a greater extent, a BIG reason the NFL is the way it is today. Sorry, I just get sick of hearing people complain about a person who ought to be emulated moreso than splitting hairs over past mistakes. He doesn’t deserve that legacy.
Loyalty

That’s nice for Lamar that he was loyal to his friends. But I don’t care whether he’s loyal to employees who do a crappy job running the football team I root for. Nor do I think he was a particularly good owner for the Chiefs. He did a lot of charitable work for the community and from all accounts he was a prince of a guy (and I do respect him for that), but he won a Super Bowl 40 years ago and he didn’t give a damn whether or not the fans got a winning product on the field after that as long as his team was profitable. So I don’t admire his cronyism.
His son is a much better owner of this team than his father ever was…at least he’s done something concrete to show that he cares about what the end result for the fan is. I’ll take an owner like that every time over a nice guy who’s content with fielding a loser.

Basically
Lamar Hunt – good man, class act, rotten team owner.

Is that a joke?
You do realize that from 1990-2005 the Chiefs were one of the best (overall) teams in the NFL, right? Yeah, the downfall came when they hired Herm, but every franchise has down periods. Think about all the franchises in the NFL, and how many of them haven’t had near the success of the Chiefs. I never liked Carl Peterson all that much either, but with all the bad decisions he DID hit several home runs (DT, Gonzales, Shields are all HOF guys), and he did a lot to bring an AWFUL franchise back from the dead. It’s too bad the end left such a sour taste in everyone’s mouth (mine included). Peterson needed to go, but you can’t blame Lamar for sticking with him so long…the team was quite good overall during his tenure.
From 1994-2009
The Chiefs haven’t won a single playoff game. And over the last decade of Hunt’s tenure the Chiefs only went to the playoffs three times (because Lamar Hunt wouldn’t get rid of Peterson when he was no longer getting the job done). And prior to that seven year window of good (but not great) teams under Peterson and Schotteheimer the Chiefs went to the playoffs once in 17 years.
Like I said…Lamar Hunt was a good man and a great philanthropist, but he was a terrible team owner.

Gotta Love Clark
Great when an owner can take time out of his busy schedule to meet and interview with our blog.
"Every day is an evaluation and if you’re not out there how can we depend on you? If you’re out there and you don’t know what to do, how can we depend on you?" Accountability -- Haley-style...
Props for Arrowhead Pride awareness
And reaching out to the Thormans to stay connected with the fans.
How can his rating be going down?
He hasn’t done anything. The guy he hired has had 3 games.
I don’t think Pioli has done a perfect job, simply because of the state of the offensive line. However we are bulding for the long term.
This team was going to have to take a step back before it ever took a step forward. Simply adding a new system was bound to cause that. For me the Chiefs have to show marked improvement at the back end of their schedule when they will be playing games they have a shot in.
D-Bowe, Mark Bradley, Bobby Engram and Turtle. Four Chiefs WRers. 4 Pro Bowlers.
Amen Paddy!

Clark merely owns the team.
He’s a very “hands-off” owner which is exactly how he should be, and shouldn’t be faulted for any football-related operations. The Chiefs do great things for the Kansas City community, and whether you like Scott Pioli or not, he was THE top name in most circles for a prospective GM hire. Clark got him, and no else did. You have to give him at least a little props for that.
I don't really see the point in a monthly poll
Clark doesn’t do hardly anything during the season that’s in the public eye. Most of his work is done behind the scenes. So why not a yearly poll so we can review what’s been done in the past 12 months?
I have no problem with Clark or Pioli for that matter...
Haley on the other hand….
