Being apart of AP for more than a year now has made me ponder why we love sports and share an euthasism for our beloved Chiefs. Why do we care so much? Why do we emotional invest ourselves into this team? I personally believe it an escape into art just as we do with many other forms.
Noam Chomsky, the great intellectual, once said sports was created to keep the "average" man distracted as the elites will their power without anyone else noticing. I believe Chomsky himself is an elitist in this statement, and that he doesn't understand what sports really are. Talented people in their respected fields look down on other genius and even don't recognize it as genius. I believe there are seven aspects of human intelligence as espoused by the Harvard professor Howard Gardner. There is: Logic/Mathematical (Einstein), Verbal (Shakespeare), Visual-Spatial (Da Vinci), Musical (Mozart), Interpersonal/People Skills (Abraham Lincoln), Intrapersonal (Jesus Christ), and Bodily/Kinesthetic (Derrick Thomas). When we watch a football game it starts out as entertainment. A fun time to relax, spend time with friends, and root for your favorite team. However, to us connoisseurs, the game is much more than that. It an appreciation and an observation of art. Football, for me, is the greatest display of athletic art than any other sport. Some will say basketball, but football requires a much greater mind/body relationship. (IMO) It is chess plus war. And, with any art it can be subjective. Some people will see a painting and dismiss as garbage while others marvel it as a masterpiece. The point I am getting at is we need to appreciate our beloved Chiefs as an artwork in progress. Right now, it probably looks like a Jackson Pollack painting, like someone threw up on a canvas. But, even a Pollack has genius to it. You have to look closey and appreciate the nuance. That is what we have to do with these Chiefs. Search for potential genius. Maybe it only happens one play in a game, but we must appreciate it. There is something beautiful in staying loyal to something so ugly. The Chiefs are an escape from the prosaic reality we live in. Just as we escape into a book, movie, song, speech, surman, or theory. I say let us embace this despair, appreciate it for what it is and do what we do in our reality. Hope. That is why we care so much and invest ourselves into this team. [And no, I was not high when I wrote this, but I might as well have been].
