The possible Derrick Johnson maneuver
I must point out in opening here that I have been really surprised by D.J's continued downfall in the Chiefs defensive shuffle. He has gone from highly touted impact player, to situational almost unwanted warm body.
So this post will go to point to one thing. If the Chiefs are actively trying to offload Johnson, I hope the Chiefs are not just after a draft pick, or a collection of lower end picks. I hope the Chiefs are able to find a receiver, or perhaps a good motor special teams player in return. I feel that if the Chiefs are hell bent on dumping D.J., please get a body who can contribute in return.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Arrowhead Pride's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Arrowhead Pride writers or editors.

I feel that if the Chiefs are hell bent on dumping D.J.
What makes you think that?
by JComp11 on Oct 19, 2009 3:17 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
yeah, I'm not so sure...
I think they are indifferent as to WHO gets all the playing time… as long as SOMEONE makes plays…
They don’t have the love or loyalty for DJ that many fans do… but they don’t hate him either.
I think he stays, unless a great offer comes in… but that’s true for most any player.

Because he was "demoted" in the offseason.
Because he hasn’t been getting the playing time we expected.
And because there are rumors floating around that he is on the trading block.

again, that doesn't mean they are "hell bent" on dumping anyone
just that they are playing another guy ahead of him.
depth is a good thing

You're right stagdsp, but you misinterpreted my comment.
JComp11 asked why they may be asking for a trade and I simply let him/her know the info I had. But, I never personally stated they were “hell bent” on dumping him.
This post is simply a clarification.

I got ya. Must have misread it. I don’t think they are “hell bent,” but if the right opportunity presents itself they would take advantage.

If he stays past the trade deadline, he's still going to be gone after this year.
There is NO way that Pioli is going to pay starter money to a guy who is riding the pine for most of the games. There are PLENTY of teams who would gladly have DJ as a starter and will most definitely outbid the Chiefs for his services.
I don’t know what the problem is between Haley and DJ but, I hope they manage to work it out. I don’t know if I can stand to see another good player go and have a great career on another team leaving us with more holes to fill.
This is exactly what has pissed me off as a fan over the years. Jared Allen, Tony G, even guys like Fujita and Joe Horn, and Boerichter, Neal Smith, T-Rich. The list just goes on and on. We need to keep our good players here while we build depth a little at a time underneath them. I hate the way the Chiefs cut and trade players with nobody there to pick up the slack.
by Chiefsfan1970 on Oct 19, 2009 4:06 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Don't know that I agree with some of those examples.
T-Rich had one really good year in Minnesota and one so-so year before he was done. Neil Smith had one decent year in Denver. Those guys were Chiefs for the long haul. As much as it sucks, Tony G. was not part of the long-term future of this team. I don’t know that I remember Boerichter doing much of anything post-KC. Jared Allen had a rift with the old management that likely couldn’t be fixed and a first and a third is a pretty good return on any player.
Fujita has had a pretty nice career. Letting Joe Horn go was definitely a mistake. I don’t think the Chiefs, however, have a longer list of former players going on to great things elsewhere than any other team.

Right about Boerichter...
But that is kind of what sucks about that situation. He was DAMN good in 2003 playing in KC. He caught 8 TDs that season. Certainly, he could have been a solid player had he stayed. Instead, he fell off into nothingness.
I heard he plays in the CFL now.

I thought we got Roaf for Horn in a trade?

I am not sure DJ is going anywhere
They utilized him very well on Sunday and brought him in for pass coverage and it seemed to work pretty well. I think they are still figuring out what they have with their LBers and how they can best utilize them as a unit.
Think about it. Vrabel and Hali on the outside aren’t goign anywhere.
Then in the middle they have Williams, Mays, Belcher and DJ…all of whom have their strengths and weaknesses. Williams and Mays seem to do a pretty good job of stopping the run. Williams in particular is cleanign up with a lot fo tackles. Mays is alwyas flying to the ball and he hits hard. He has been poor in pass coverage but remember he is young, starting for the first time and is in a new D.
Belcher and DJ seem to do a little better in pass coverage the little we have seen from them.
LB is obviously a very important part of this D and hopefully one or more of these guys will emerge ala Tamba Hali in their positions with the others rotating in and out, keeping the LB’s fresh.
DJ is still young and talented and just because he isn’t in on every snap doesn’t mean that by the end of the year he won’t be the important part of the defense many think he should be.

I pretty much agree Patrick.
There was some different packages that they used this past week it seemed. I think that Haley and the coaches are still trying to see what works well for them and what doesn’t. That rotation seems to work pretty good, we’ll see if they use it again this coming Sunday.
Yeah, let's just keep matriculatin' the ball down the field, boys! ...

all i know is DJ had 4 tacklers in the redskins game and before that all season had only 4 tackles
so what ever they did doubled his tackles for the season in one game if they are on to something with the player managment then keep it up

The thumbs up logo.
Do certain posts get the thumbs up logo because a mod thinks it’s a good post? I’ve always been curious about that.

@Chiefsfan1970
I understand your comments.
The Chiefs defense as a whole has not been good in years. Yes, the Chiefs have had some nice players over the years, but the Chiefs need to create a situation where players are paid where they slot. A linebacker playing situationally does not warrant big time money, and if the Chiefs can land something in return for D.J. i say do it.
The Chiefs need more players who bust their ass, don’t complain and contribute long term, does Johnson really do that?

I'll expand on this a bit.
I don’t think any of our starters that there are rumors out there that they may be traded are going anywhere. If I’m wrong I’ll eat some crow tomorrow at 4:00, but I don’t think I will be wrong. The rumors or ideas for possible trades have included DJ, D-Bowe, and Dorsey. My reasoning is simple. These are some of our better players so I don’t think we will let them go.
(Also, please do not confuse my opinion on this issue with my above comment which was an informational statement of what has happened in the past and current speculation.)

latest RUMOR from National Football Post has Da Bears as being (possibly) interested in DJ

well i guess the trade happy bears dont have any picks left to give for this year so that could mean a players. no way they trade any of their wideouts though.

Da Bears, Giants, and Eagles are all interested.
Dolphins are possibly interested in Bowe, but won’t make an offer that we can’t refuse.

remember when linebacker was our biggest issue?
Now it seems like we’re really deep and everywhere else on the defense is a much bigger problem.
