Why we should stick with Larry Johnson.
I have been seeing so many negative comments about Larry Johnson, I am about to puke!
"Leave Larry Johnson ALONE!"
via jamiedubs.com
I will start out with Larry Johnson's senior year at Penn St. 2159yrds rushing and 29TD. Pretty impressive. He won the Doak Walker award, The Maxwell Award, and the Walter Camp award.
Larry Johnson is by far the best running back on our team. He has posted numbers that backs only dream of.

Look at his only two full seasons with the Chiefs.....two straight 1700yrds+ seasons. That was just a few seasons ago.
After his big season in 06-07 he wanted a big contract......can you blame him? He was a monster and helped the Chiefs make the playoffs. He deserved it.
The next season he suffered a foot injury that cost him the rest of the year.....cant help the stats there. 8 games played.
In 2008 he wasnt getting many carries....so he spoke out about it. Then in the next two games he rushed for 319 yards on 52 carries, a 6.1ypc clip.
Yes, Larry Johnson has battled off the field crap. He is not alone in that matter. Many great stars have setbacks. Nobody is perfect. He has done some stupid things in his life but he is looking forward now.
Dont even think about making a caption for this photo! lol

I just wanted to show Priest Holmes stats.....Priest is held to such a high regard. I am seeing stats that are very comparable. LJ's yards per game is higher than PH. Larry has a career YPC just .2 lower than PH.
This season Larry has been getting plays called right up the gut. No RB can survive that and come out looking sweet in the stats. Lets look at the teams we played this season.
Rush Defense Larry Johnson Stats
Baltimore Ravens 26 for 91 3.5ypc 11 for 20 1.8ypc
Oakland Raiders 33 for 145 4.3ypc 24 for 78 3.3ypc
Philadelphia Eagles 29 for 103 3.6ypc 19 for 38 2.0ypc
New York Giants 24 for 110 4.4ypc 18 for 53 2.9ypc
Dallas Cowboys 25 for 106 4.2ypc 21 for 37 1.8ypc
Washington Redskins 30 for 118 3.8ypc 23 for 83 3.6ypc
As you can see every team except the Raiders has pretty decent rush defense. They are only allowing a little over 100yrds for the whole game. Larry Johnson is not the best back in the NFL by a long shot but he is the best we have right now.
Something to look forward to. The Chargers are allowing 32 rushes for 151yrds a game. 3rd worst in the NFL. So this could really be a breakout performance by Larry.
Some guys have also said we should start Jamaal Charles and Dantrell Savage. I like Charles but at 5'11 and 199lbs....I would be scared for his life. Savage is 5'8 182lbs. I think the system is fine. You need a big back like Larry to Larry to carry the load. He does hold the NFL record for most carries in a season. I would eventually like to see Javarris Williams come up to the roster to learn his craft behind LJ, just as LJ did with Priest. Javarris is 5'10 223lbs....big enough to be an every down back. He had a very good college career. He rushed a total of 849 times for 4329yrds a 5.1ypc total.
I know Larry is right for our team....

As far as the poll goes
you realize Javarris Williams isn’t on our roster, right?
The Larry Johnson issue is kinda old. The story hasn’t changed a bit since the beginning of last season. Run his legs off. When he’s done, we’ll draft a new powerback. Until then we’ve got a lot bigger holes to fill (yes, that IS what she said).

Javarris IS on the practice squad

Thanks stag. I thought he was outright released.

As long as it gets done…right

I gotta roll with Savage.
He has been the most impressive RB on the team IMO this season. I just wish he would get the ball more often. Looks like a young Priest Holmes.

LJ
I’ve been his biggest critic.
I do think Charles could be more productive
I admit LJ showed signs of life yesterday
The answer is probably still a combination of the two, for the rest of this year

I can see the point in Charles
He is quick and shift and has a burst. His problem is he is not built to be an every down back. I wouldnt mind him getting more carries though. We could have a Brandon Jacobs Tiki Barber duo….kinda sorta.
I was impressed with Mike Cox too….he did a lead block on an LJ run that was nice. I would love to see more runs with the FB in the backfield.

LJ would really up his YPC
With a FB sharing the backfield with him more often. The FB could take the first hit/contact and let LJ build up speed/head of steam.

I'm more concerned with our line right now
We need to be looking at rebuilding our line and getting a another #1 receiver opposite Dwayne Bowe next season…Not getting a new back imo

Larry has earned the job. It’s his to lose.
One thing missing from Larry thus far has been his pass catching skill.
Dump the ball off much?

I don't see how 3.0 YPC is "earning the job"
He has simply not looked good this year. I don’t know if it’s the line or him or a combination of the two but, he just is NOT getting it done.
I give him props though, yesterday he did a much better job. I would still like to see Savage get in there for a few plays here and there.

I'm with you Matt.
In addition to your points Larry got warmed up last week. It was his best game of the season. And if I know Larry the way I think I know Larry I think that will light a fire under his @## a bit.
Savage and (if he comes back soon) Smith are just to unproven. I’d rather go with proven, but a bit older myself.
As for Charles let me make this comparison. Yes you do see guys like Chris Johnson from Tennessee that are littler guys that can be every down backs, but they are the exception and not the rule. A guy LJ’s size is more likely to be your every down back than a guy Charles’ size.
At the end of the day I am with Stagdsp and the coaching staff. I think LJ as the main guy and Charles as the change of pace back are the way to go this year. (Assuming Charles holds on to the ball the rest of the year.)

Thanks Primussux
Good points about the other smaller RB…..but you see where that is getting TN this year….lol….plus they have LenDale White to spell him.
You see the stats on the Chargers run D…..LJ is licking his chops!

Very uninspired football from that kid all year this year. Seriously disappointing.

again
I go back to my comment regarding 1 game where averaged slightly less than 4 yards per carry against a team in complete disarray does not make up for the 5 weeks previous where he did absolute crap. Im sure this discussion will come up again after the Cleveland game and he gets another 80 yards and maybe even a TD this time.
Im not putting all my eggs in the Charles basket either, but at least he is averaging 4.4 yards per carry for the season, which should warrant him at least starting and see what hes got. If he sucks we can back to crappy Larry, but at least give him a shot to shine. This could all be moot when Kolby comes back too.

Believe me. I want him to succeed but...
He has shown absolutely nothing all year. He has to be the the biggest overall disappointment to me this season so far. I expected Charles to be an impact player and I have seen NOTHING out of him thus far.

sorry i cant agree
Larry has looked lazy the last 5 games of the season and running for less than 4 yards per carry and no TDs against a team in shambles does not make me think hes finally turned the corner.
I do not think the right RB is on this team right now. I am all for keeping Charles as a Sproles/Mewelde Moore player.
Blame the o-line all you want but you are just hiding from the trut, the guy is done.

Look...
I don’t know if LJ is done or not but, right now, our running game sucks. I think it’s a combination of poor blocking and poor, lazy play by ALL of the RBs, not just LJ. The only spark I have seen has come from Savage and where does that get you? Straight to the inactive list, that’s where.
Uninspired football by the entire offense if you ask me. Cassel and Wade have been the only players who consistently play with any kind of fire. Bowe shows flashes but needs to stop dropping big 3rd down passes. Bradley? Don’t even get me started on him.
This offense has been painful to watch. I hope they get it together soon.
by Chiefsfan1970 on Oct 19, 2009 5:12 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree
I think it starts by calling plays to your strength. Larry Johnson is best when he has a lead blocker….or gets plays called outside of the guards. Cassel is best when he has a quick slot guy and plays out of the shotgun….which they have done….but Cassel cant let go of the ball. I think we need Lance Long in the slot in the worst way. Cassel needs to trust his WR more….I know that is tough when they drop so many but you cant make plays laying on your back.
We have to get Larry going…..if we have no running game we have no passing game. We have to establish some kind of presence on the line and get the games going quicker….

Couldn't agree more Matt.
Especially on the Lance Long thing. The only way he is going to become a good player is to let him play. We could really use his speed.
BTW: Cassel REALLY needs to start letting the ball go.

Priest Holmes...
Smashed blitzing linebackers in the mouth…Caught the ball out of the back field….
didn’t go down from arm tackles….had vision…complete back. LJ never was/will be.
In LJ’s defense, he hasn’t been used right for a while, for what ever reason. This game looked a little better when we got him to the edge.
by 12t on Oct 19, 2009 5:26 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
exactly about the edge
never thought he was a speed guy, but when he got to the edge, for some reason he looked good yesterday. at least one of those was vision on his part; wasn’t an outside call. that might even open up the inside some cause D’s can’t always smash the middle

lj has 119 carries…..it’s hard to say if he’s our best back…but either way..he’s all we have really….there’s no denying he’s no Chris Johnson, Adrian Pederson or Rice…man I love that guy..he is a hell of a runner…I wish we could get our paws on him over here….
he runs like a maniac…anyway…listen matty…
LJ was every bit as good as Priest when he wanted to be…but right now..he’s either doing this on purpose or he really is a shadow of his former self…
but lets hope…that’s all anyone can do right now….I hope he runs like hell against the Chargers..

What alot of people fail to realize is,
Charles is not built to be an every down back…Lj will be fine with oline help and some plays to the outside instead of up the gut every down. Does anyone honestly think Charles or savage can pound the ball up the middle 20 times a game ?

Most people actually DO realize
that Charles is not an everydown back. LJ should be ran between the tackles as he has been, he doesn’t have the speed to bounce it to the outside.

LJ was average yesterday, at best ... and it was the best he's been all season, and that says it all
think of it this way: in 6 games this year, LJ has managed to average the same as the overall ruching defense of the team we played only ONCE, and that was yesterday – and while yes, he had a 17 yd run, if you take away that and an 11 yd run he also had, you end with (everything else he did) 21 attempts for 57 yds … barely over 2 yds/att … and THAT is hardly a great performance by any standard
his other games have, by a,most any measure, been somewhere between uninspired (at best) and atrocious (at worst) – he’s lost at least a step in quickness, and as many times as he’s run the ball over the years (as UCrawford has pointed out) his best years are far behind him
I won’t argue that the O-Line is bad, nor will I argue that LJ wouldn’t benefit from a better O-Line, but I will argue that Charles is the fastest RB we have, and as we can’t and don’t blow people off the line of scrimmage, it would behoove the team to go more to the outside, and LJ is NOT an outside corner type RB
and thus, Matt, I hereby award you the Dead Horse Pic of the Week

I think LJ can still run the ball
but I’m still not sold that he is the right guy for this team. I haven’t gotten to see enough of the games this year to know if he’s improved his pass blocking or not. His pass receiving seems about the same. I’m sure he’s improved some or I don’t think Haley would let him on the field, like Vermeil before him. But he hasn’t ever shown he can be a good triple threat back (run, block, catch).
Charles, along with what I’ve seen of Savage (mostly preseason) seem to be more complete players. Plus they are significantly faster than LJ. With our line I think their speed may help us get a better running game than having LJ back there. Obviously Haley doesn’t, but I’d like to see him try it for one game. I agree that neither Charles or Savage look like every down backs, but they could be a pretty good tandem backfield. It will be interesting to see what Pioli and Haley do with Kolby.

yep
i have to agree with you, but of course i’ve never been down on Johnson for his on-field work. This year in particular, he has played amazing defenses with a patchwork line that may really come together as the season goes on (my opinion); it takes time for an oline to begin to work together. It’s not all about talent on the line.
I think he’s still got it and, unlike other years, he seems to be getting it upstairs too.
He’ll suprise people this year with his numbers by the end of the year (my prediction); the rest of the season looks nothing like the first half. And when the run gets going the rest of the offense will start to get going as well.

I hope your right man...we need him so bad...
He could change everything for us….instantly…if he runs well, we win! A lot! But that is gonna take a line. A good fucking O line….we need a whole new line except for Albert perhaps. But Waters isn’t coming back, Niswanger and Goff are atrocious to watch and Albert needs to step up and do his job!!

just trying to be positive, plus i tink i believe it
i agree about most of our line; i like O’cal though, don’t know what the fuck the others are doing right now, but…. i hope when they start working together, get more disiplined, play some lesser D’s and hence get the run going, everything will open up.
By the way I do wanna see more use of our other backs, i just think Johnson is still our #1 for now

Why is Waters not coming back?
The only way he doesnt come back is if he dies. They are not gonna release him and im pretty sure he wont be a FA. Why do people keep saying stuff like that?

LOL
That “Will See” wont work on me. The only way they release him(Which is the only way he could walk) is if they sign 2 guards and a C in FA and/or draft. I dont see them getting 3 interior linemen better or even almost as good as waters. Maybe they trade him, But wouldnt they have done that when his value was higher during the draft.

Johnson
For me , it is hard to judge a running back when the line is a mountain of suck. The type of back Johnson is only makes it more obvious. Johnson is a beast when he gets a head of steam going. But, I just don’t see him making many people miss. These slow ass developing draws 8 yards in the backfield don’t seem to play to his strengths either.

I think Johnson is due $5 million next year
Based on that fact alone, I really doubt he’ll be back (and that’s also why he can’t be traded). We could draft a power back in the 3rd or 4th round that would probably be just as effective, and hungrier, at 1/10th of his salary.
One thing I really like about LJ though, he doesn’t fumble the ball.

Mixed Feelings!
I would like to see more 2 back sets and Charles involved more. I am not crazy about the play calling with the delayed handoffs…LJ is a delay anyway in getting going. The run up the gut hurts his average as well and the terrible o-line. I really believe we would be a better running team with Charles in Co. getting more carries. The reason is simple, LJ rarely can make a play on his own and requires a hole, Charles can make plays with his feet and is a good receiver as well.
