Can anyone explain with some detail what happened on the blocked punt? from what little I saw on highlights I thought the Redskin could advance the ball, but I am not sure.

I think...
The ball was touched by the kicking team(illegally) before the ball crossed the line of scrimmage so it’s deemed a dead ball at that spot. Im not sure what the illegal touch was wether it was the guy who recovered it batting forward or the rebound off the punters face.

I had a kicking question too though and since this topic is here....
What was the deal with the onside kick on a free kick? After a safety the other team is supposed to free kick the ball and I thought the use of a tee or kicking it off the ground was off limits.

After a safety, the team can choose whether they want to kick from a tee or punt
The advantage of punting is it usually allows for more “hang time” for your coverage unit

No the rule is you can't use a tee regardless
The ball was kicked off the ground with a guy holding it. Not the best for an onside kick.

Thanks for the clarification. You do have the option to punt though.

Man I was worried for a minute on that punt.
I kept thinking of the Bernard Pollard block were the Chiefs touched it past the line of scrimmage and the other team got a first down. I thought maybe it hit a chief past the line of scrimmage.
I believe if the ball is blocked (touched behind the line of scrimmage by the defense) that the ball is essentially dead unless touched by the Chiefs.

I think thats right.
The first touch was off of their punters face then the DB advanced the ball so I think there were two illegal touches.

I think the deal is
the kicking team can only pick up a blocked punt if it doesn’t go past the line of scrimmage. If it does go past the line of scrimmage then it is the same as a regular punt. The ball was past the line of scrimmage and the Washington player batted it down field as he was trying to pick it up. That is the illegal touching because its moving the ball farther down field. I think……..
It's a good thing Pioli and Haley aren't running AP or a lot of you guys would of been traded or cut for cast offs from the Pats Pulpit.

For the Saftey Play
Kicking a Safety
In addition to a kickoff, the other free kick is a kick after a safety (safety kick). A punt may be used (a punt may not be used on a kickoff).
On a safety kick, the team scored upon puts ball in play by a punt, dropkick, or placekick without tee. No score can be made on a free kick following a safety, even if a series of penalties places team in position. (A field goal can be scored only on a play from scrimmage or a free kick after a fair catch.)

Punt Rule
Any punt that is blocked and does not cross the line of scrimmage can be recovered and advanced by either team. However, if offensive team recovers it must make the yardage necessary for its first down to retain possession if punt was on fourth down.
The kicking team may never advance its own kick even though legal recovery is made beyond the line of scrimmage. Possession only.
