Player Reaction to Haley At Game's End
Does the reaction of Chiefs players to Coach Haley's first win put to rest any of the Haley haters who insist Haley will lose the team with his emotional coaching style? There was a Gatorade bath and the players seemed genuinely happy for their coach getting his first win. If they hated the guy's guts I can't imagine they would have rallied around him like they did. This is just my opinion, but it looked to me like this team is very supportive of their head coach, which was just as positive to see as the win was.

Haley hasn't been here long enough for anyone to hate him
Players will put up with a lot of crap if they’re winning. If they’re being abused and still losing, thats when there will be a problem.
It’s nice that Haley got his first win and everything, but you can’t really say the Chiefs played better overall. Just ran into a team that sucked worse on this day than they did.

What Would Make You Happy.....
Any team that losses is worse then the other team on that day. Also, Their D played good, We just did enough to win. They do have the 4th best D is the NFL. Yeah there offense sucks but so do ours.

I'm happy we won
I would have been happier if there were signs of life that we were building momentum and getting better. Unfortunately that didn’t happen. The Skins were just really terrible today.

you can't ever be happy with those expectations.
I’m not trying to insult you but we won today, there’s no reason to be a realist til tomorrow, just enjoy the ending of the losing streak.
If you honestly will only be impressed with a perfect game, (outside of the Raider and Cleveland games and that’s still a maybe) your going to have a lot of sour sundays. A win is a win

Not looking for perfection. Just would like to see progress.
We had the exact same problems today we have had in every one of our losses. Nothing really changed except that the team we were playing was poorly coached and made mistakes.
The offensive line continues to get Cassel crushed (5 sacks, 10 QB hurries), the offense continues to be miserable on 3rd down (only converted 25% of 3rd downs), the defense continues to occasionally give up enormous plays.
Yes, I’m extremely happy we got a victory. But I’m not going to stick my head in the sand and pretend the Chiefs were awesome today. This was a HORRIBLE game all the way around between two HORRIBLE teams. We were just less horrible today than they were.

Chiefs haven't faced any slouches on D.
Haynesworth is THE premiere d-lineman in the league.
I’m not sayin’ I’m HAPPY with the offense, but you can see they’re headed in a good direction. D-Bowe regressed a little bit in the hands dept, but they’re starting to solidify things, and watching them, I don’t feel like they’re a crappy crew that’s very close to its ceiling. I see a pretty good squad, with some weapons, that has some up-side. I see Cassel making more pre-snap adjustments and seeming to have a better grasp of what’s comin’ at him. Recognition appears better, is what I’m sayin’, I guess.
As for his protection and the o-line in general, I wouldn’t mind seeing Waters and Goff take a seat, if I knew Alleman and Ndukwe were both healthy. Waters isn’t playing very well or very smart. Too inconsistent, even discounting for the competition he’s faced. As the leader of that unit, he needs a slice of humble pie and a nice warm seat in front of the heaters, where he can watch the game.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

Washington is top 5 in total D.
They may struggle on offense but this is a solid team on defense. Anybody who thinks we beat a bad team today isn’t paying attention.

Haynesworth WAS the premiere d-lineman in the league
in his contract year. Prior to that he was a good, but not great player. I expect him to revert to form now that he’s gotten the big contract. It’s become somewhat common to see a player having a stellar year in the final year of a contract and then go back to being ordinary afterward.

Since training camp started there have been tons of posts on here bashing Haley's coaching style.
Even though Haley’s coaching style seems to me to resemble that of a football coach, there have been a lot of hand-wringing about him: he yells too much, he didn’t play high level football, he’s taking on too many roles, he’s alienating players, he’s demoting players to 3rd team (by the way, I think D. Bowe should go back to the third team after that game today), he’s arrogant……The main idea that people kept throwing out was that Haley with his lack of football experience paired with his volatility would alienate players to the degree they would quit on him. If the team hated their coach they would have celebrated with each other and left Haley out of it.

right,
bench Bowe because every receiver we have is better than he is. DJ should stay on the bench too, he only out played Williams (again).
Haley (barely) won one game, and against a really crappy team that is in the middle of imploding. I’m happy for a win, but let’s not pretend like we’ve turned a corner.
22 guys off the street can win twice as many games as Haley has given us so far. I hope he goes ape shit wild and gives us like 3 or 4 wins, but let’s be serious here.

An NFL receiver should score that touchdown at the end. Bowe seemed to not be running full speed.
And earlier in the 4th quarter he dropped a ball when he clearly didn’t want to take the hit. Bowe wants to consider himself an elite player. Elite players make those plays.

Wouldn't good coaching help that player to meet his potential?
by ChiefDJ on Oct 18, 2009 6:56 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Good coaching only works if the player is receptive to it.
It’s a two-way street. Haley has been all over Bowe and it doesn’t appear that it’s made much difference. Personally, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them move Bowe at some point. I think Bowe is a likely candidate to under-achieve.

Bowe had at least that one drop that he should've caught. But you're overboard in your take, Slappy.
Bowe was running at full speed. He’s not straight-line fast. You expect the DB to get a good angle on him and run him down. And then you expect Bowe to try to bully him. That’s pretty much what happened.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

Maybe only winning their 3rd out of the last 30 games had something to do with it
I find it amusing that after probably the ugliest Chiefs win I’ve ever seen, you think that automatically makes all the concerns about Haley invalid. It doesn’t.
I’m not anti-Haley. I’m not a big Haley fan and think there is legitimacy in the things you mention that you think this single victory proves wrong, but I’m certainly not rooting against him.
But I’m not jumping up and down going Rah Rah everythings perfect just because the Chiefs beat another really bad team.

I think it's funny how
The wait and see approach is good for everyone, until you think it proves your point. I thought the Majority of us had agreed that all of this was opinion, and the only thing that would determine anything would be the record at the end of the year, and if we saw significant improvement…
I’m extrememly happy that we won today…. just two more wins till I quit giving Haley shit for his 22 guys off the street, That being said, I don’t think one celebration of someone’s first victory as a head coach as an indication of his overall ability to be successful. If he keeps the attitude he had when he first got here… I still maintain that his overall likelyhood of success is pretty low. Maybe he’s mellowing out a bit, who knows….
You look and see that they included him in the celebration, and I count the many times he’s caught yelling at players on the sideline and they just take their helmet off and keep walking… in one ear and out the other.

You were one of the guys claiming he would lose the team with his coaching style.
The way they responded to him after the game would indicate that he has not lost the team.

eh
I just think it’s funny how everyone just kept saying that we had to wait and see…. now that we win one game… out of six…. that Haley is a success???? I think we’ll be able to measure the impact haley has been able to have at the end of the season… I still think we’re looking at 2 maybe three wins if we’re lucky… and it’s pretty easy to lose a ball club with a guy riding your ass even though it’s not producing anything on the field….
I think maybe you should look at how many times guys just pass by while he’s on one of his rants… I think that’s a clear indicator of losing a team. I’ve been on baseball teams that won championships, and I celebrated with everyone regardless of how much I liked them, they’re still part of the team… everyone got their piece of the celebration pie….

I'm not saying he's a success or a failure.
I’m saying when I watched the players respond to their coach getting his first win as an NFL head coach it gave me just as much of a lift as the win did.

I’m glad you’re encouraged by their response to the head coach….. and I hope this win leads to many more, although being a realist… I doubt it will…. We obviously have a long way to go, however
1) the run game was MUCH better today. Not hard to do considering the past 5 games
2)Cassel overthrew Bowe as many times as Bowe dropped perfect passes. I honestly think that practicing on timing will help out a lot on that issue.
3)The defense still gave up big plays, just not as many. I think we can credit putrid offensive play of the Redskins for that.
4) The biggest plus of all is that we ACTUALLY WON!!!! When WIlliams blocked that punt and the Chiefs got the ball on the 50, I thought “here we go again. Another heart wrenching loss for Chiefs fans. How are they going to give it away this time?” Instead, they played stiff D and good special teams to close out the win. Yes, the Chiefs beat a crappy team, but at least they didn’t lose to a crappy team, and that is the first step to improvement. So regardless of how ugly the game was, and the numerous mistakes made, the Chiefs still improved.

Defense, offense, and special teams all performed as they should have in the 4th quarter. Regardless of how they played the rest of the game, it is awesome to see them play well and finally close out a game. I am so pysched!

There is winning, then there is 'not losing'
That’s what happened today, KC did not lose, but we cannot call what happened out there a real ‘win’ either. Only in the W/L column does it equivocate to a Win. Not that it;s a bad thing to finally have a W in that column. It’s nice to see.
I don’t want a ‘W’ in that column with an asterisk next to it, indicating it’s only there because we only shot ourselves in the foot half as much as usual. That’s not real progress.
So, I hate to rain on folks parade, but while I am glad at not losing, I just didn’t see anything worthy to celebrate

They made plays when they had to.
The blocked punt, the safety at the end. I think some are responding to this win the way college football writers do: they don’t look at the win in and of itself. They have to assign it style points. Was the win “convincing” enough. Coaches don’t care about style points. The only stat they care about is the W.

The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly
We got our first win under the Haley/Pioli Regime – GOOD
We won on the road (regardless of the opposing team quality) – GOOD
Our offensive line is still a sack sieve – UGLY
Cassel survived with out a major injury – GOOD (Haynesworth’s full body slam was a cheap shot?)
Cassel wakes up Monday body completely bruised, and can’t practice for a day – UGLY
Cassel again doesn’t turn the ball over – GOOD (Under constant fire, Cassel is quickly proving that he can make experienced decisions, and not turn the ball over. Yes, his clock management is sometimes suspect. Yes, he sometimes holds on to the ball too long (Of course if we had the optimal offensive line like he had in NE it’s a non issue). But overall, He’s playing up to the expectations.
Larry Johnson averaged 3.6 YPC – GOOD (He actually had better production than his numbers showed, and opened up the passing game.
Larry Johnson actually worked hard for extra yardage – UGLY (I still think he’s mentally deficient, not a team player, and wants to be traded. He should fight for every inch, on every play, of every game)
Cassel and Bowe are hit and miss still – GOOD/BAD (Though Bowe shows flashes of turning the corner as a Big Time NFL receiver, there are still easy drops. If the Chiefs sign a true #2 threat (God the Bears have like 5?), and the timing continues to get better between these two, Chiefs fans will be future happy campers at Arrowhead)
The “D” didn’t give up a big play for a TD – GOOD (Yes, Portis raked off his longest run from scrimmage in his career, and Collins hit one long pass, but the D didn’t let either play convert into 6 points! I’m in disbelief that posters here, harp on how weak the Skins are, rather than just soaking in the first “W” of the year)
McGraw had a “Monster” Day on D. – GOOD (A lot of negativity on the Chiefs inability to pressure opposing QB’s. Well it came from an unlikely hero, but McGraw played HUGE)
Overall, I’m pleased with the performance. And yes, a win is always a win. Take away 2 big plays (Dallas/Oakland), and the Chiefs could very easily be 3-3 right now. If we got really lucky in Baltimore 1st game, 4-2. I think a lot of analysts expected the Chiefs to be 1-5 after the first 6. It was a brutal schedule to open the year.
So, get your arses out to Arrowhead next Sunday, and support your Chiefs! Early forecast looks like a great day to be at the stadium, and make some noise. These are our Chiefs, the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.
