Arrowheadlines: Chiefs News 10/18
Happy Gameday! Redskins time. Let's (finally) get a win.For just about every person, there is a different definition for the word tough.
Some see the word as descriptive of a person or situation that’s hard to deal with. Some use the word to describe a person who is physically strong. Others find it the word to define mental strength. Webster’s Dictionary has eight different definitions with words that range from rough, to stern, to difficult.
Tough is the word of the day as the Chiefs face Game No. 6 of their 2009 season. They will be in FedEx Field to face the Washington Redskins. Kickoff is noon, with television on CBS.
Elevating Toughness … Game-Day Cup O’Chiefs from Bob Gretz
Dorsey has started each of the Chiefs’ five games in 2009. Haley says the second-year defender has improved in each of them. For the first time since Kansas City drafted Dorsey last year with the fifth overall pick, he is showing signs that his potential, once shadowed by sloppy play and bad habits, might soon be within his reach.
“I want to be a great player, man,” he says. “That’s what people don’t understand.”
Dorsey is embarrassed at this next part, but he is no longer willing to deny it: He gained so much weight after his rookie season that it put his future with the Chiefs — and maybe his career — in jeopardy.
Losing weight has helped Chiefs’ Dorsey become more effective from KC Star
Through five weeks of the regular season, nothing has disappointed me like the blown chances. And I don’t necessarily mean the ones that reflect on the scoreboard but those that include the personalities of the competitors. The beauty of a transition stage is that said phase constitutes a paradise for players to show whatever they got. There’s definitely going to be carte blanche. Opportunities will come in bunches and they will be there for the taking. So far, no one has seized the moment ’cause there hasn’t been a bright spot in the depth chart. Some have flashed but none has shined. That comes as a byproduct of letting it all out.A Convenient Truth from Bob Gretz
It was a chilly evening in Denver 15 years ago on the evening of October 17, 1994.
But the action on the field at Mile High Stadium was hot. And epic, and unforgettable.
The Chiefs against the Broncos. Joe Montana versus John Elway. Monday night football.
Several years ago, ABC conducted a poll to determine the greatest games in the history of Monday Night Football. The ‘94 victory by the Chiefs over the Broncos ranked among the five most memorable games in what is now a nearly 40 years for the historic national TV broadcast.
“Those kinds of battles you get in are the fun games for a quarterback,” Montana said several years ago. “You’re going against the guy that can, you know if you let him back on the field, he’ll do the same thing back to you.”
Montana-Elway, 15 Years Ago Today from Bob Gretz
This one came down to the final seconds and the final play.
Not until defensive back Jim Marsalis deflected a fourth-down pass into the waiting arms of Emmitt Thomas with 15 seconds left were the Chiefs assured of a 17-10 victory over the Miami Dolphins.
Chiefs’ Super Bowl IV flashback: Game 6 from KC Star
Still bothered by a groin injury that occurred in Week 4, punter Hunter Smith will miss his second consecutive game and Glenn Pakulak again will handle punting duties Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs. With Smith Still Out, Pakulak Will Punt Again from The Washington Post
Chiefs defensive lineman Glenn Dorsey is available, a league source tells us.
NFL Network's Jason La Canfora recently suggested that Dorsey might indeed be available.
"I'm also told by numerous league sources that the coaching staff in Kansas City isn't high on NT Glenn Dorsey, a former first-round draft pick," La Canfora recently wrote, via KCChiefs.com. "There's always a demand for nose tackles in this league, and the salary-cap ramifications wouldn't be a deterrent in dealing for Dorsey."Dorsey's on the block, but the Chiefs are acting like he isn't from ProFootballTalk
NFL beat writer Tony Grossi of the Cleveland Plain Dealer is reporting that Kansas City has made LB Derrick Johnson available via trade prior to the deadline next week.
If true, this is a definite switch in strategy for the Chiefs, as they had previously indicated that a trade for Johnson was not an option. Given his inability to stay healthy or produce consistently since being drafted #15 overall in 2007, it’s no surprise that KC would want to see what they can get for him.
Chiefs have Johnson on the block from NFL News and Rumors
KEY MATCHUP
Redskins offensive tackles Stephon Heyer and Mike Williams vs. Chiefs linebackers Tamba Hali and Mike Vrabel
With six-time Pro Bowl left tackle Chris Samuels sidelined by a neck injury, Heyer flips from the right side to the left. Williams, who started last week at right guard, moves to right tackle.
Heyer made the Redskins as an undrafted rookie in 2007, finished that year as a starter and began the past two years as a regular. Williams, whom Buffalo took fourth in the 2002 draft, was sidelined for all of 2006 before sitting out the past two years. Williams, who weighed 450 pounds in February, is now at 337 -- just seven more than Heyer.
Redskins Preview from The Washington Times
The booing fans and critical talk-radio yakkers are hardly the only ones giving the reeling Washington Redskins a hard time lately.
Members of the "Redskins family" are piling on, too.
Yes, with Washington at 2-3 despite a soft-as-can-be schedule, everyone from former stars Joe Theismann and John Riggins to people writing for the team's official Web site are ripping the Redskins.Everyone ripping Redskins from St Louis Post-Dispatch

Eh, I'm not as high on him as I used to be...
He does not seem to have been worth the 15th pick…

1st rounders from Texas
They suck. It’s a statistical fact.

What statistics are you reading
Never saw a stat called Suck
Quinton Jammer, Casey Hampton, Ricky Williams, Bryan Westbrook, Metcalf, Earl Campbell….Those guys certainly don’t suck. I struggle to say that DJ, Cederick Benson, or VY sucks either let alone a statistical fact.
Predictions for 2009:

I think Chris did a post
on Texas 1st rounders before this year’s draft. He’s right, they aren’t very good.

You might think
his opinion is right but that is far from a “statistical fact”.

Well yeah it's not a statistical fact
That was more trash talking than anything.
Here’s Joel’s post on the subject.
I do think it’s a fair argument to say that UT’s coddling of players makes for a tougher transition to the NFL.

LOL
OK thats fair but wouldn’t that extend to all round drafted players and not just first round guys. Honestly the stuff I read about Charles, he didn’t sound coddled.

I know someone way up in the UT organization
Who told me exactly that when I asked him why UT players seemed to have a tougher transition to the NFL than players from other schools.
On Charles, his asset in college was his speed and in the NFL, that asset pretty much evened out.

I meant
The coddling. Mack seemed even tougher about Charles’s lack of being able to hold on to the ball than Todd is. Any chance we can hire Tiki Barber as a coach to teach him how to hold on to the ball? Jeeze. Butterfingers aint even close to describing the craptitude of Charles’s hands.

Ha!
No, they’re definitely better than all of those school’s 1st rounders. He’s just saying that a lot of them aren’t necessarily worth the 1st round distinction. It’s not they aren’t good players, just that their body of work resembles that of players selected in later rounds.

But
Isn’t that true of just about any random collection of first round picks?

And that is
statistical evidence? An opinion written by his brother? The truth is that most first round picks turn out to be not worth their draft position and you can go school after school and do the same thing… How is LSU batting right now?

Yeah
it is kind of hard to believe a reporter when he has no fucking clue what position the guy plays. At first I thought the NT was just an error but then he follows it up with this gem….
"There’s always a demand for nose tackles in this league, and the salary-cap ramifications wouldn’t be a deterrent in dealing for Dorsey."
What moron. Dorsey might be the worst nose tackle ever if he payed there.

LMAO
Even more so at 295 lbs or whatever he is playing at. I just read an article today where it said that teams are concerned about Dorsey being able to play 4-3 DT at his current weight. But then that idiot has to ruin by saying he doesnt know why they are worried about that since a few cheese burgers and bon-bons will fix him up…

Maybe
They are referring to the NT in the 4-3 scheme as in what is known as a “shade” or “1 Technique”. All three of those labels are synonymous. The NT in a 4-3 is an important position just as in a 3-4. If they don’t demand a double team from the center and guard then you will have OL in your linebackers face all day.
This is just some wisdom from a living, breathing defensive lineman.
