First Round Options
It's way too early for me to be looking forward to the 2010 NFL Draft. But I can't help myself. So come along, friends, and watch me break down our potential choices for our first round pick.
I honestly believe that we will be picking in the top 10 again next year. You could even say that we will be picking in the top 5 and I wouldn't find that too far-fetched. I actually see the Chiefs picking at the #8 spot in the draft. I hope like hell I'm wrong. I hope we're picking higher. But I just have this feeling that we will be picking at 8 (or around that area).
So, here's my question: if we are at the #8 spot, what exactly do we need? Here are some viable options....
Offensive Tackle. We need more help on the line. Albert's play has been disappointing so far this year. If he doesn't improve throughout the year, I can see him being switched to guard or right tackle. But even if he does improve, then I wouldn't rule out the possibility of getting another offensive lineman.
Defensive Tackle. I'm against this choice but I can see Pioli grabbing a DT. It wouldn't surprise me if he picks Suh from Nebraska (if he's available). He never quits. He does an excellent job and stuffing the run and getting to the quarterback. He seems to be everywhere on the field. If we selected him I'd be okay with that.
Running Back. I know it sounds crazy but if he's a game changer (ex. Adrian Peterson), then we should get him. LJ is barely averaging 2 yards per carry. Our other backs aren't dazzling me either. The O-line hasn't helped the run game much, but it's clear that we could still use an upgrade. Remember: if we get a RB in the first round, I expect him to be a game changer. If he's there, go get him!
Linebacker. Any LB spot is fine with me. We could certainly use some more help up the middle. I don't see Derrick Johnson back in KC next year. And even though I like Vrabel, he's in the final year of his contract and I don't see him staying in KC. So I would not be opposed to an OLB either. Anything to help improve the depth of our LB corps will be appreciated.
Safety. I know this also sounds crazy. Safety isn't a pressing need for us right now. But there is a lot of love out there for Eric Berry (Tennessee) and Taylor Mays (USC). Mike Brown isn't scaring any QB and Page could be gone next year too. If one of those guys could be our version of Ed Reed or Troy Polamalu, I'm all for it.
I know that some of these choices don't make sense. I am also aware that its still October and a lot could change over the course of the season. But hey, anything can happen....

I'd venture to say safety is a pressing need for this team...

I'd say if Berry is there we take him
I watched Mays in the Notre Dame USC game and I’m not impressed anymore. But I wouldn’t be mad with Suh, a solid pass rush creates a solid secondary.

I would rank them (in order I would like the Chiefs to take them)
1. Berry
2. Okung
3. Suh
4. Spikes
5. Mays
It's a good thing Pioli and Haley aren't running AP or a lot of you guys would of been traded or cut for cast offs from the Pats Pulpit.

Hmm.
I would definately take Berry first and Okung second….but then you lose me at Suh..yeah he is an impact player but you think we need him more than Spikes……If it was between Suh and Spikes I say LB is more of a need.

I'd have no problem with that
I just think that there is an ability gap between Suh and Spikes. I think Spikes will be a great LB, but Suh just seems to be one of those really special players.

Suh is not a need for the chiefs
He should not be stuck at NT, and we have 2 top 5 draft pick DEs already…

Spikes is a two down player and a liability in coverage...
You dont take him @ the 8 spot. He will go in the late teens

either him or Ricky Sapp..

Ricky Sapp should still be around in the 3rd or later
Small frame, hasn’t really bulked up, mainly a 1 trick pony of getting into the backfield

Watching Branden Carter, and Suh go at it today,
I like Branden Carter, guard from Texas Tech. Suh got the better of the exchanges in the first half, but was much better in the second. I know it is supposed to be bpa, but man we need to score points, and the only way to do that all starts with solid offensive line. We need at least two early round o-lineman.
We have to run the gauntlet over the next few weeks, we will be better for it. Pioli is not done with the roster, he will improve it. LJ is getting ready to start whining again.

Brandon Carter
is GINORMOUS….. not sure he’d fit into a zone blocking scheme all that well, then again… no one else seems to fit and they’re still trying to run it.

I haven't looked at him much yet
I wonder if he is agile enough to play on the outside at RT.

He seem to run well on guard pulling plays,
Looked pretty agile to me considering his size.

And when we had the o-line of
Waters, Roaf, Wiegeman, and Shields, Welbourn even looked good so I would say four out of five on the o-line would cut the mustard. O’ Calaghan still has room to grow into the position, we still have a project in B-Rich, I would not count either of those out yet. If we were to get Carter, I would think he could stay right at guard.

Didn't he have some off field issues recently...
That might drop his stock… If we can get a guy like that, even if he played in a spread system, I think you take a look as a 5th or 6th round guy.

What about Spoon from MU?
Win # 1 comes this week! (If I keep saying it, it's gotta come true eventually right?)

I see spoon going in the first round to a team like
Saints/Falcons/Indy. He would be playing ILB for us, and right now IMO ILB is not a huge pressing need.
