Why such a mess?

Hello All

Again I will say I am a fan of Haley and Pioli and believe on giving both some time to turn this ship around. As I reflect on the Chiefs, one thing I constantly ask myself is 'why is this team such a mess'? I will say I have lots of credit to give Herm and Carl.

They let Casey Wigman go and look how well he is doing in DonkeeLand (dang Donks) and then instead of drafting a TRUE LEFT TACKLE in Ryan Clady (yip another stud with the dang Donkees) we draft Dorsey and Brandon Albert, a left Guard in college.

Wow, what if we had drafted BOTH of them and still had Wigman. That would be NICE.

And that gets me to thinking.... we could have drafted both of them BECAUSE we were STUPID enough to trade #69. Nice decision Carl and Herm, that one worked out real well..BRILLIANT. We also decided to take Mr Fumble in college, Jamal Charles. Is he fast...yes, can he be a threat in many ways..yes, will he ever be a force in the NFL with his ongoing propensity to fumble...heck no.

Carl and Herm made horrible..and I mean horrible decisions on our offensive and defensive lines. We made moves to shore up the D-Line last year. If we do not put a great deal of focus on our O-Line this off season.... I will lose a lot of faith in Pioli and Company.

For now...Matt Cassel, I appreciate your mettle and know it will get tested again this week.

Go Chiefs, beat Washington!!

ok, someone has to say it, so I will ...

you’re talking about the past, things that were over long ago and far away, things that the current regime has no control over, and in fact, things that AT THE TIME THEY WERE DONE looked like the best options available … the draft is always a crapshoot anyway … all this has been hashed and rehashed over and over and over again, so without further ado, I bring out the Dead Horse of the Day picture

although on the negative side of things ...

I don’t know what there is about Charles that he gets the title thrown at him constantly of “big play threat”. He hasn’t broken past the first defender all season. I would love to see a link to one single running play where he actually get’s yardage after the initial contact.

Where he breaks free and shows some intestinal fortitude and the ability to man up. Fast ain’t shit. Shit can be fast though.

just sayin' ...

if that’s the best we got it’s no wonder we’re almost dead last, if not dead last in the NFL in rushing.

Erm.......

If we wouldnt have traded Jared Allen we wouldnt have had a 2nd first round pick….

If Clady would have been from a bigger school...

We would have taken him imo.Too bad some scouts and gms can’t get past that.

instead of blaming Peterson right now, how about looking at ...

Pioli, who could have beefed up the O-Line, or had Arron Curry … but instead took Tyson Jackson (not that Jackson is horrible, but man I wish they’d have taken Curry, the 3-4 just begs for more LBs)

Got a point there...

I didn’t see that Jackson pick coming…It was “The Chiefs are going to pick Curry”, up to like a day before or some shit, then I hear Jackson is in the mix.Not very many people were talking about him so I was like huh?Who?Ohhh…Uhh I hope he’s good.

I could be wrong, but maybe the thinking was...

… that the offense wasn’t the biggest problem. They could make improvements by conditioning and FA to get a marginal upgrade to the O-Line, and, with a better and more accomplished QB, could hold their own.

They needed to address the trenches on D, for SURE, and they took the shortest path to that for the longest term success. The miscalculation may’ve been in the secondary, and I think maybe the array of journeyman receivers they had caused them to kid themselves about their perimeter players until the 2nd or 3rd preseason game. I think the Chiefs came out of camp thinking the O-Line was pretty good and Tyson Jackson was going to dominate the league.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

you could be right and probably are ... the pick was still wrong

they had every intention of going to the 3-4 by draft day, and that screams for LB help – the WR issue wasn’t really an issue at that point

possible they thought O-Line better than it was/is but if they thought that based on last yr’s game film then all it proves is that either Gailey should get more kudos for what he did with so litttle, or that Pioli/Haley are clueless at judging talent

3-4 screams "Go Big" at LB, and they did.

They already had a pair of pretty darn good ‘tweeners in Hali and McBride for WOLB. They didn’t really hit a home run with Vrabel and Thomas, but they at least got on base with Vrabel, and I expect Andy Studebaker’s younger legs to be on the field more and more. Vrabel does seem to be playin’ a little high, slow, and looks a little stiff out there. Chiefs might get the most outta him by puttin’ ‘im at TE. He might not be as quick at playin’ off the block and gettin’ PAST his guy, but on the OTHER side of the ball, there aren’t many in the league who could get past Vrabel, if he didn’t want ’em to. And he can catch a pass.

Denver went DB and LB to make the transition. Short-term, it’s definitely paid off. Might not long-run, but their secondary affords them luxuries the Chiefs’ front 7 doesn’t have. Be interesting to see if the Chiefs spread ’em out, when they meet. I kinda think they should, because it might not be until your #3 or #4 WR that any kind of 1-on-1 mismatch presents itself. But then, I feel like that about ’most anybody KC faces. (- sigh -)

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

Vrabel's a base hit, maybe even a double ...

… but Thomas was a strikeout, pure and simple, total whiff

interesting idea that, Vrabel as TE … as for spreading out the Bronco secondary, perhaps, but if you’re counting on OUR #3 or #4 WR that’s gonna be tough

my thinking on Curry is/was this: he’s such a big hitter, good tackler and fast that whatever area he has should be totally covered, high impact right now kind of player, and with LB that good (imagine a better, faster Hali) what that would do to help the front 3 DL … so it goes

so do I - but it takes a coupla yrs for D-Lineman to get there ... Hali (now at LB) is coming around

I remenber when hali was drafted, the word was “he has a motor that never stops” and we’re beginning to really see that now … with TJack, time will tell

Yes, the OLB spot suits him.

He’s not getting buried in the trenches, but he’s up where he can do the most good.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

and that's the only reason it makes ANY sense to spend first pick on DL

hmmmmmmmmm – so just a “what if” … move Hali anyway as they did and then get Curry, with Vrabel and one more … Tank-Dorsey-??? up front … either FA or trade, could have been good

the biggest issue I have with it all....

is that our team was in desperate need of playmakers…. like curry…. and even if Jackson turns into a good player, I have a hard time justifiying a pick like that on a guy who’s primary responsibilities are taking up blockers and clogging a running lane…. any widebody can do that….. obviously we don’t konw mcgee will be there at three…. but if we plug him or turk mcbride in at his rde slot… how much are we losing compared to how much could have been made had we drafted eugene monroe or aaron curry…. they’re much bigger upgrades over their positions than jackson is over mcgee, or anyone else we would have found to play that RDE spot.

Anybody else think the dorsey and albert picks were brilliant?

Hindsight is so 20-20, and its way too early to even call them busts, but I gotta be honest – I thought the 2008 first round was masterful. If it turns out lousy, so be it, but its not as if herm and co were arrogantly going against the grain with these picks. 2009 on the other hand….:)

i dont know about brillant but im not complaining

I like the picks. I do notice that Albert seems to get hurt a lot though. That worries me. Dorsey needs to lay off all that KC BBQ in the offseason. He had to spend a lot of time losing weight I am still sold on him being a good player.
Its gonna take a while but I have faith we will get better. At least we are not the Raiders. Imagine if Russell was our QB!!!

Carl Peterson actually drafted fairly well on Day 1

his flaws lied in his inability to land coaches that actually, yanno, knew how to coach.
