Coaching staff changes in 2010?

Remember us discussing Romeo Crennel in the offseason, right after Mangini got the Browns job? Is there still that possibility in 2010? Obviously we do not have the most talent on the defensive side of the ball right now, but could a better DC cover up some of that with scheming? In the Vermiel years we had talent on the offensive side of the ball, but not at every position, the scheme made it hard for defenses to plan for us. Can the same be said on the defensive side of the ball? I have been thinking lately the Pendergast is just a stopgap until the one that Pioli wants is available, what do you all think?

Not sure

Al Saunders was a good Off Coord but his scheme worked when he had good players. Either that is true now since he is in St. Louis or the League has caught on to his ways. In other words, good scheme + bad players = 0-5.

Winning begins with Attitude - Haley and Pioli will be winners in KC!

I'll forever be a Chiefs fan! Only God himself could take that away from me, but when I get to my great reward, I'll rejoin two bigger fans, my Mom and Dad.

Saunders is helping Cam Cameron

as a consultant in Baltimore.

We have to run the gauntlet over the next few weeks, we will be better for it. Pioli is not done with the roster, he will improve it. LJ is getting ready to start whining again.

Assuming the defense doesn't improve dramatically this year

This team needs a good OC and a DC in the offseason.
To have a first year coach with no OC and a shitty DC, this team didn’t stand a chance.

Week 6 Prediction:
Kansas City Chiefs 77 - Washington Redskins 2

I'm pretty confident

With the OL struggles, I fear the Skins will get a safety.

I hear Goff is being replaced by my 10 month old niece

Who just recently learned how to stand up. I think we will see a dramatic improvement.

yah both sides of the ball need help...haley can't do it alone obviously

let’s hope that solves a lot of this next year…Haley has some help..he can get back to coaching and penderbust is replaced by cornell…a new oc and dc would help us out I think…

by krayfish on Oct 15, 2009 12:25 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

obviously

I guess what bothers me most on that is … he THOUGHT he could do it alone, at least on the O-Side … and (to me) that smacks of arrogance and (dare I say) ignorance … two traits that, in my mind, do NOT make for a good HC

I think Haley...

and Saunders like to do similar things…throw the ball down field and mix it up. I think if we can fix this line and get a running back that does not need a hole the size of Missouri to run through then we will start putting up some good numbers under Haley. Although Haley had a good rec. core with the Cardinals I don’t think he needs a great core to get his points on the board.

Haley was hired late...

That’s why I think he had to with Pendergast. I hope he has more to choose from this off-season.

Romeo Crennel

I believe the Chiefs offered Romeo the job and he was ready to take it (even possibly did??). The Chiefs only waited until they knew Romeo was going to have surgery and needed rehab time before they pulled the trigger on Pendergast. I’m betting that offer is still out there for 2010 and the Chiefs will “shuffle” Clancy around until he lands another job (much like Gailey). This team believes in the “right” people and that includes coaches . . . No one is safe!

What about Tim

No matter who is our DC, if Tim Krumrie is still the d-line coach we will continue to be a bad defense. Its starts up front, where we have been weak since his arrival.

I would think so too

I don’t think Pendergast is really going to get it done here..but we needed someone…in fact remember at preseason when he hired all those coaches and didn’t immediatly decide who was going to do what??

that told me something right there…do you think dick lebeau would have been hired and they would have not been quite sure who would be our DC?? No way he’d be the man instantly…so I doubt pendergast is long term either.

by krayfish on Oct 15, 2009 12:21 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

or at least he may not be long term as THE DC....

he may take on a different role within the defense…but that’s sheer speculation either way…just my opinion…I have never been too impressed with him…let’s hope Gruden doesn’t go to Washington before we play them right?? lol

call me crazy but i think this week we are going to the spread offense

I just think cassel has had enough hits and wants to throw down field and also mix in some quick passes i mean thats when we look the best our line sucks . im calling it right now no more run game we are throwing the ball.

To answer the original question of the post

the defensive scheme and what the players are asked to do is huge. Just look at the Broncos. Basically the same team and they are doing awesome right now. Miami from 2 years ago Porter was looking like a bust, after the coaching change all of a suddent the guy is averaging 15 sacks. So yeah I think scheme is huge.

But the flip side of that coin is the talent on the field. you can have the best damn scheme in the world but if the players can’t execute, it does no good. I would like to see coaches be more fluid in their schemes and tune it to what the players can do.

Could a better DC cover up some of that with scheming?

The answer is yes..

Can amazing talent cover up shitty coaching

The answer is yes…

Just like Peyton Manning is pretty much the OC of the Colts

but how often do you find players like that yeah?

Time is a great teacher... unfortunately it kills all it's pupils.

Oh yeah you're totally right, I'm just being devil's advocate on this

I think the first part of the puzzle is definitely the players though. After the talent is collected then the coaching and gameplan can take full effect. But without the players, the best damn coach in the world can’t make it happen.

Just look at the track record of great coaches that won Superbowls (or at least competed in them or were highly ranked for their coordinating) and went to other teams and can’t get it done.

They didn’t forget how to coach, they just tend to go to rebuilding teams with less talent.

On The Subject Of Coaching Changes

Frankly there isn’t one coordinator or assistant coach on this staff who shouldn’t fear for his job next offseason if the team continues to play like it has. Not one.

And they need to hire a fricking offensive coordinator and a QB coach. This Haley pulling triple-duty b.s. needs to end immediately.

Predictions for 2009

1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
6. The Chiefs will go 7-9 in 2009, good for 2nd in the AFC West. Revision: We go 5-11 and finish behind Oakland.
7. Ryan Succop will not perform better in 2009 than Connor Barth did in 2008.
8. The Chiefs will have a bottom 10 defense this year.
9. RB will be a problem area this season on offense.

I actually want Haley to be demoted to O.C.

And bring in one of the great H.C.

Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes; after that, who cares?! He's a mile away and you've got his shoes!
