Chiefs RB Jackie Battle to Injured Reserve
So the Kansas City Chiefs do have a new linebacker and his name is Justin Rogers. The club should formally announce that move soon.
And Jackie Battle is off the active roster.
Key word being active: The Chiefs placed Battle on injured reserve today ending his season. The injury reportedly has to do with his shoulder and it's "likely" he'll require surgery according to Josh Looney of KCChiefs.com.
It's a strange sequence of events. Battle was apparently healthy enough to be active against the Cowboys (Dantrell Savage was inactive). He even logged some time on special teams. He wasn't injured in that game that I'm aware of. 72 hours later and he's on injured reserve.
This is the third injury-related move that's made me go 'Huh?'
Let's rewind a bit.
On August 7th, the Chiefs formally signed Tyson Jackson and sent out a press releasing announcing that LB Weston Dacus was released to make room for him. Except...At the end of training camp, he was placed back on the roster under injured reserve. No explanation for this move. We assume because he had missed the two days prior to his release with an injury that the Chiefs couldn't cut him.
On the final cut down to the 53 man roster in September, rookie lineman Colin Brown was placed on IR. He had participated in everything up to that day and that move was a surprise even to some of those inside Arrowhead.
It's amazing how little we really know about this Chiefs team.
Battle was mainly a special teamer so Rogers should be able to step right in and fill that role.

this is the key
because he had missed the two days prior to his release with an injury that the Chiefs couldn’t cut him.
I bet the Chiefs were going to cut Brown, Dacus, Battle… all outright… BUT, they COULDN’T do so, because they had some sort of injury…
so, on to IR they go.
I believe that Brown is still in the long term plans of this team, and he’d be on the PS if they were able to cut him… but IR works better, as he’s safe from any other team signing him

Sounds like
maybe a good way to keep a good player without exposing them. I and I don’t just mean with Battle, but maybe also with Dacus and Brown.

So this makes 9 LB on the active roster.
Wow….that is a bit much when we were almost short handed on the oline last week.

We also have Javarris Williams and Lance Long...
Waiting on the practice squad…..they should have been able to step up in this kind of situation.

yep...
but, I think they are trying to get as many players in here as possible…
so, why not use the full, expanded roster (53 active, 8 PS, IR, etc) to do so?
I bet Long will be called up at some point, Williams may contribute next year.

You still can
Call up a PS player and sign someone else to replace them on the PS. I think Long is more valuable then Rogers. Williams could have had a shot to get some carries and play ST too.

yeah... but...
Rogers wouldn’t be PS eligible… so, they wanted him… he had to come to the active roster.

I know what happened
Pioli took Battle out behind the Chiefs front offices and said “Sorry, Jackie, but we gotta make some room on this roster” and proceeded to beat him with an aluminum bat.

Now that is probably 100% the truth...
But now you have leaked the info….you better not answer any knocks at your door….

I doubt they are putting guys on IR to keep them
if you were a player and you weren’t hurt would you lie to stay a memeber of the Chiefs?

Added 1
Haley told the offense to run it again. When someone said the defense already knows the play he responded, "So what, make it work."

Battle out to make room for Kolby Smith
If you remember, RB Kolby Smith is due to be reactivated in a little over a week. I think they plan to give him some time on the field and that makes either Battle or Savage the odd man out. Obviously, they added this special teams guy today, but someone will disappear when Smith is activated and they ditched the running back now in anticipation. By the way, Battle may actually be hurt, but I’m not sure I buy that. Does a team ever have to prove to the league that the guys they stick on IR are actually injured?
