Where the Kansas City Chiefs Rank: Week 6
| Team | Yards / Game | Yards / Play | Rushing Yards / Game | Rushing Yards / Play | Passing Yards / Game | Passing Yards / Play | Interception Rate | Sacks / Pass Attempt | First Downs / Game |
| KC Offense | 30 (31) | 30 (31) | 24 (18t) | 27 (22) | 29 (29) | 28 (28) | 5t (11) | 28 (29) | 27 (27t) |
| Punt Return Avg | Kickoff Return Avg | Field Goals Made | 3rd Down Pct | 4th Down Pct | Red Zone Pct | Goal to Go% | Avg Time of Possession | Points / Game | |
| 17 (17) | 16 (14) | 15t (1t) | 32 (32) | 5 (8) | 1 (1t) | 10 (9) | 16 (18) | 24t (26) |
Categories in which we fell in the rankings are highlighted in red.
What can you say about a team that is ranked 30th in offensive yards per game and 32nd in yards given up per game?
Those two stats right there sum up the season so far for me. Forget all of the other stats. Through five games, we're only two spots away from being statistically the worst team in the NFL. Unarguably the worst team in the NFL.
There just isn't any spin you can put on those numbers. Unless you're wearing Chiefs-colored glasses. Which I do wear. But still...
The lone bright spot up there is our red zone percentage, which is negated by our points/game ranking. So when we get down to the red zone, we're able to score at over a 70% rate. But we don't get there very often.
The Chiefs rushing game also appears to be settling out probably where it should be - in the bottom five of the NFL. I was looking at the stats last night and the rushing game of 2009 is looking eerily like the rushing game of 2007. Remember when the offensive line was all we talked about in 2007? Yep, same thing again in 2009.
The first five games of the 2007 season had rushing totals of 72, 70, 50, 126 and 10 yards respectively. And it didn't get much better throughout the rest of the season, with only a couple of bigger spikes in rushing yards.
And if I'm sounding negative, I'm sorry about the defensive table that is after the jump.
| Team | Yards / Game | Yards / Play | Rushing Yards / Game | Rushing Yards / Play | Passing Yards / Game | Passing Yards / Play | Interception Rate | Sacks / Pass Attempt | First Downs / Game |
| KC Defense | 32 (28) | 30 (24) | 25 (23) | 21 (17) | 29 (28) | 29 (23) | 30 (27) | 30 (29) | 28 (26t) |
| Punt Return Avg | Kickoff Return Avg | 3rd Down Pct | 4th Down Pct | Red Zone Pct | Goal to Go% | Points / Game | Point Differential / Game | Yard Differential / Game | |
| 1 (1) | 15 (13) | 27 (26) | 6t (5t) | 20t (26t) | 14 (24t) | 28 (29) | 25 (27) | 31 (30) |
The Chiefs are statistically the worst defense in the NFL, according to yards given up per game. Yards differential is another dirty stat. It's the difference between your team's offensive yards and defensive yards given up.
But there is one bright spot. Watch out opposing special teams units. When the Chiefs offense doesn't convert that third down (worst in the NFL again this week), you're not getting anything on that punt return!
Again, sorry for the negativity. But I don't see how these rankings can be spun towards a positive note.
We're going through a rough time, everybody knows that. Just remember this when I post these rankings one week and the screen lights up with a nice, green glow.

I'm not impressed with your spin ability Chris
You can “easily” sweep those numbers under the rug by looking at the quality of our opponents.

What is this fear of negativity about?
Every single post, Chris. That’s all I ever seem to see from you.
Let’s man up and be honest about where this organization has been. That’s not “negative.” That’s honest. Stop apologizing for it—and stop trying to mute people for similar honesty.
This organization has stunk for a while and we know it. That doesn’t make us less of a fan or a detriment to the team because we know it. Hopefully, Pioli can continue to bring in the right pieces and Haley can turn them into a team.
Our negativity, honesty, analysis, or otherwise, has nothing to do with that. Let’s get over the “don’t be negative!” meme. We’re better than that, even if our team isn’t.

Agreed
Although I disagree with the idea that Chris is trying to stifle opinions that are less than rosy about the Chiefs. He’s just trying to find a silver lining in what is a very dark cloud right now…but he’s been very welcoming of all opinions as long as they’re not of the troll variety.
I do agree with the rest of your post, though, Justin.

Predictions for 2009
1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
6. The Chiefs will go 7-9 in 2009, good for 2nd in the AFC West. Revision: We go 5-11 and finish behind Oakland.
7. Ryan Succop will not perform better in 2009 than Connor Barth did in 2008.
8. The Chiefs will have a bottom 10 defense this year.
9. RB will be a problem area this season on offense.

That's fine. I'm all for a heavy banstick on trolls. I'm specifically referring to the constant "be positive!" meme in the Game Open Threads
The “don’t be negative” fanshot or w/e it was didn’t help, either. Just seemed a bit…small, for a sponsored site. Not sure how to put it, but writers aren’t supposed to be cheerleaders (or crowd control).

The Other Reason For That Is
When we don’t emphasize it at times, commenters start turning on each other and we end up doing more warnings and bans than we’d like. It’s to a degree inevitable in a season like this…people are going to get frustrated, especially if they don’t think the team’s on the right track long-term, and often they’ll feel compelled to lash out. Chris is just trying to keep people off of that.

The facts are what the facts are and they need to be told good or bad.
The Chiefs are bad this year. God help us, we still love ‘em regardless. Believe it or not we could be worse. This team has just been put through the ringer and most people here knew it was going to be a very tough go the first 5 weeks. Sure enough, it was. Pioli and Haley are giving it their best shot and are working their asses off to get this organization back on it’s feet and that’s something I haven’t seen here in a couple decades. It’s very easy to accumulate garbage but it takes a long time to throw it all out. Remember, Pioli and Haley didn’t get a head start like everyone else, they both got pulled in here late to begin with.
Chris, don’t worry about sounding negative or apologizing for any of this. It’s Joel’s and your job to report the facts, the truth about the organization. Never apologize about the truth.
Yeah, let's just keep matriculatin' the ball down the field, boys! ...
