Great Interview
He seems like a totally nice guy. The fact that we don’t hear from him often shouldn’t lead people to think he has an ego or lives in ivory towers. I got the distinct impression that he’s been VERY busy evaluating players and working hard to get this thing turned around. He was also a lot more personable and friendly-sounding than I would’ve expected, but that’s because I’ve started listening to the people who make all of these accusations that have no basis in fact…
They talked about:
- the O-Line - not a lot they can do now. He says they could look back to like last March and say to themselves “could we have fixed it then?” he said he looked at all of his charts and what not and said vs. the guys we have now, there weren’t that many options in free agency last spring.-pointing to the TD to push it into overtime and CASSEL’S decision to audible to QB sneak to get that first down…how he’s tough, and competitive, and that its starting to rub off on the other guys)
- how Pioli was “disappointed and annoyed” with the loss to the Cowboys and how he felt guilty to the point that as he was backing out of the stadium he saw large groups of people still hanging out in the cold and he walked around and talked to fans, knowing what its like to follow losing football teams and how its an emotional and financial investment.
- DJ (Pioli says they’re not necessarily looking to trade him yet, they may or may not …depends on what they could do… he said injuries to DJ early on unfortunately played in Demarrio’s favor and Demarrio has been playing solid where DJ is not as reliable)
- Cassel (Of course, Pioli’s impressed with his play and his ability to get knocked down and keep getting up and trying to make plays
- How he understands Chiefs fans are impatient and have every right to be after having terrible recent seasons. He closed the call with “Please keep the faith Kansas City”
And the radio guys joked how he needs to keep an eye on some college O-Liners and he chuckled and said “I will.”
Wow, I can’t believe I remembered all that. lol.
Weird formatting!

I like it
He’s to the point and makes no bones about it.
This is a complete 180 to our previous management where we had to listen to Gretz be fed information in regards to what to say to the kingdom.
The “few” times mgmt. did speak in the past, it was very obtuse.
I like Pioli and he has my support for at least 3 years to give him an opportunity to build this team and make a turnaround.
Bill Parcell’s: "You are what your record says you are."
"My job is not to collect talent, but to build a team. Individuals make the Pro Bowl. Teams win championships. That is our goal."—Chiefs GM Scott Pioli.
Fisking Pioli's Comments
the O-Line:not a lot they can do now. He says they could look back to like last March and say to themselves “could we have fixed it then?” he said he looked at all of his charts and what not and said vs. the guys we have now, there weren’t that many options in free agency last spring.
If his “charts” said there weren’t any o-line upgrades available over what we had, then his charts were wrong. They were flat out wrong. Pioli screwed up here big time. There isn’t much he can do now, of course, but he made a mistake and I think he needs to admit that after the season at some point. Extremely bad move from that standpoint and if he thought Goff was a good addition then his ability to judge lineman talent has me concerned.
how Pioli was “disappointed and annoyed” with the loss to the Cowboys
The “annoyed” caught my attention. Does this possibly highlight his problems with how Haley’s running the team? I don’t think Haley’s given him all that much to be happy about. If so, I’m glad Pioli’s at least looking inward here. Kudos to him for walking out with the fans, though…seriously. It’s something Peterson didn’t do enough of and I believe the guy cares. Hopefully he’ll do a better job of addressing the fans’ concerns next offseason.
DJ: Pioli says they’re not necessarily looking to trade him yet, they may or may not …depends on what they could do… he said injuries to DJ early on unfortunately played in Demarrio’s favor and Demarrio has been playing solid where DJ is not as reliable
Thanks for giving a straight answer to that question…seriously. Now how hard would it have been for your asshole coach to do the same instead of ducking the question like he has been? Pioli may have a reputation for secrecy, but he’s a hell of a lot more forthcoming and, frankly, honest with the fans than his head coach.
Cassel: Of course, Pioli’s impressed with his play and his ability to get knocked down and keep getting up and trying to make plays-pointing to the TD to push it into overtime and CASSEL’S decision to audible to QB sneak to get that first down…how he’s tough, and competitive, and that its starting to rub off on the other guys
Agreed…Cassel’s doing okay in my book. I’ve got my concerns about some things in his game, but he “looks” like a solid QB to me all things considered and I think he’ll be an okay investment if the line doesn’t get him killed.
Thanks for transcribing all that, jk. Much appreciated.

Predictions for 2009
1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
6. The Chiefs will go 7-9 in 2009, good for 2nd in the AFC West. Revision: We go 5-11 and finish behind Oakland.
7. Ryan Succop will not perform better in 2009 than Connor Barth did in 2008.
8. The Chiefs will have a bottom 10 defense this year.
9. RB will be a problem area this season on offense.
I recognize my memory might be a little off...
