Arrowheadlines: Chiefs News 10/13
Quick one today guys, I'm off for lovely Newark airport in a few minutes.
ON THE LATE TOUCHDOWN CATCH BY DWAYNE BOWE
"Guys who want to be big- time players I’ve always believed make big-time plays in big-time games. That was our biggest situation to date and he made the play. That’s something to build on. I think Dwayne is much further along as far as understanding me, understanding us and what we’re trying to get done here. I think that’s positive. He’s making progress and he definitely has a chance to be a big-time player. We need the Dwayne Bowe’s and those guys to help pull this team to where we need to get to."

The Chiefs will get another option beginning next week when Kolby Smith becomes eligible to return to practice and the active roster. Largely forgotten outside of Chiefs headquarters since he tore ligaments in his right knee halfway through last season, Smith could eventually get a look at least as a part-time back.
"I feel good," Smith said. "It’s just a matter of once you get back on the field going through contact to see how the knee feels then. That’s when we’ll decide whether I’m ready to go or not. Whenever they say I can play, I’ll be out there. I want to make sure I’m right before I come back."
Since the start of training camp, Smith conditions in a corner of the Chiefs practice field while his teammates go through drills. Part of his ritual includes running up a steep, grassy slope adjacent to the practice field the Chiefs have come to call Priest Holmes Hill for the former running back who regularly scaled its heights.
"Running up that hill," Smith said, "it will get you right."
Running game with LJ has ground to a halt from KC Star
...an offense with a wounded line and a history of futility found a way to drive 74 yards in 10 plays and get the game tied in the final seconds on Matt Cassel's 16-yard pass to Dwayne Bowe on fourth down.
In fact, that final drive that tied it 20-all may turn out to be a watershed event as Todd Haley and his coaching staff work to forge a personality and identity for the 0-5 Chiefs.
It was easily the snappiest drive of the entire miserable year for the Chiefs, even more remarkable because left tackle Brandon Albert had gone to the sideline with an apparent ankle injury.Chiefs looking everywhere for positives from The Hutchinson News
“It's bothering me, because I've been around teams that that was our strength, that we made plays at those times,” Phillips said Monday. “And that helped win games. And we've done that here. It's something we're going to emphasize more and more.”
Phillips said he can't figure out why Dallas has been strong on third downs earlier in the game using the same nickel formation it uses for the two-minute defense.
The Cowboys have allowed their opponents to convert only 30.2 percent of their third-down attempts (19 of 63), which ranks fourth in the NFC.
“You've got to play every play like it's third-and-seven, third-and-five-to-seven,” Phillips said. “We're making mistakes on the same defenses that we're not making mistakes on in third down.”

Washington are 2-3 despite playing the easy part of their schedule. Sunday's game against the Kansas City Chiefs will mark the team's sixth consecutive game against a winless team.
"I want to win, that's what I'm here for," Zorn told reporters on Monday. "That's what the Redskins are all about. We've lost two tough games. I feel bad and I'm hurting.
"Our team is as well. These guys are guys with resolve. I'm a man of resolve and we're going to get back at it, but it's less than 24 hours after the game."

3. I am as in the know as it gets. Here's a tip I got Sunday. See this helmet the Chiefs wore? See that star marking? That's the exact location Jerry Jones would have buried Wade Phillips' body had the Cowboys lost to the Chiefs. It's true!
DJ Gallo's NFL Hangover, Week 5 from ESPN.com
Judging from the postgame celebration, which included a veritable Jones-fest in the visiting owner’s suite, you would have thought something truly special had happened.
Like, maybe, beating the Eagles. Or winning a game in December. Or winning a playoff game ... period.
But no, this was a dog pile of the vanities. These were the Dallas Cowboys, whooping it up because they had just cheated the hangman.
Dogs will be dogs, I guess. The Cowboys couldn’t help themselves. The Kansas City Chiefs are winless and stand 2-28 in their past 30 games.

Haley On Larry Johnson
Coach Todd Haley indicated Monday that he’s not inclined to make a change at running back anytime soon, saying Johnson’s struggles may be a factor of the larger offensive problems around him.
Really? Seriously? Funny how every single RB on your roster besides Larry Johnson seems to be able to get 3 yards per carry or more playing behind the same line. If the offensive problems don’t seem to affect the other RBs as much as Johnson, maybe it’s because Larry Johnson is the worst RB on your roster.
And here’s another question…why in the hell does Larry Johnson get a pass from Haley’s stupid mindgames when he’s been a much bigger problem child than Bowe, or DJ, or Cassel, or Waters, or Savage, or any number of other players Haley screws with? Where’s Haley woofing at Johnson on the sidelines when he falls down behind the o-line like he does to Bowe whenever he feels Bowe hasn’t done a perfect job? Why doesn’t Johnson get dumped down the depth chart? He’s probably the most deserving of it on the roster.
Can’t help but think that it may have something to do with Johnson being the guy on the team probably most willing to rip the coaching staff to the press at this point…now that he’s got his contract back.

I'm Starting To Think
That Haley’s just a bully…bullies only pick on people that they think they can get away with picking on. Hit them back and they leave you alone. Ever since Waters fired back at him this offseason, you haven’t seen Haley messing with Waters. And Johnson’s a timebomb just waiting to go off even in the best of circumstances.
It’s not necessarily a bad thing to be a bully as a head coach. After all, Jimmy Johnson in Dallas exercised a definite double standard in how he treated stars versus disposable players. Thing is, once a player wasn’t producing, Johnson moved him into the “disposable” category really quick, while Haley’s choice of targets doesn’t seem to have much to do with production. And if he’s not willing to get into it with a non-productive player or bench a non-productive player because he feels that guy is somehow untouchable, that’s a problem…especially on a team in the Chiefs’ current situation.

There does have to be more to this than we know.
Here on AP there are fans on both sides of just about every subject of Chiefs except for LJ. I haven’t read anyone one saying he still should be the starter. So you know if everyone on here agrees on something it has to be the right thing to do.
I was wondering if it has something to do with the grievance with LJ’s money. Every time Haley was asked about LJ during the off season he did nothing but praise him. Now that LJ has his money back and he is not doing very good, Haley doesn’t want to look like he got fooled, even though he still is looking bad by running LJ when he is doing so bad.

It's A Good Theory
And if it’s true, it’s a very troubling commentary on Haley.
Every coach makes mistakes…that’s not a huge deal. But when coaches make mistakes and then compound that mistake by trying to deny that it happened, that’s a big problem. Frankly, the last five weeks has me wondering if Todd Haley is a mature or secure enough person to be a head coach in the NFL.

Todd is right
Larry’s problems this year are not personal, they are derivatives of the larger problems with the OL and offensive play-calling…and really just the ineptitude of the entire offense.
You say that all other chiefs backs manage to average 3 yards a carry? Well that is because they are usually in the game on passing downs. Therefore they get softer defenses that are usually spread out because kc is in the shotgun. Then the chiefs run a draw on 3rd and 13 with Charles and he gains 8, well that statistic is pretty skewed isn’t it.
Larry gets the ball in pro formation, or Ace or Heavy on first down and even my grandma knows who’s getting the ball. That’s when we get to the OL problems, they aren’t good enough to open a hole with the defense keyed on a tendency. The Vikings can do that, the chiefs cannot because their OL resembles a block of Swiss cheese when there is defenders across from it.
Then you say, wait a minute, I thought the chiefs are pretty balanced with run/pass play calling on first down, well you’re right! BUT it doesn’t matter how balanced the play calling us if you have an obvious formation tendency like the chiefs do. I can’t remember the last time we ran a play action pass on 1st down out of Ace, Pro or heavy personnel.
So, bottom line, its just not on Larry’s shoulders. Haley knows this and that’s why he said what he did to the media.

Another reason I don't believe it is soely on the O-Line
Arguably the worst line in the NFL, the Green Bay Packers, have a running back who is struggling in Ryan Grant. However Grant’s “struggles” have resulted in 65 yards per game and 3.8 YPC. I’d love if LJ had those numbers.

nobody cares about the Chiefs
That is the only reason the chiefs OL is not being ridiculed on sportscenter. In addition to the general apathy shown by the national media towards the chiefs is the amount of injuries on the packers OL. They are being shuffled out of their best positions just to field a 5 man unit.
Bottom line, if anyone, including the NFL gave a shit about the chiefs we would be on MNF getting our OL embarrassed by jared Allen too.
Just a note, if you ever watch a chiefs highlight on sportscenter the only chiefs name they ever say is Matt Cassel, lol. Its like no one else on the team exists to them.
