Roster Re-Evaluation- What do the Chiefs need to do???

I wrote the following fanpost, right around roster cut time.  I thought I'd be interesting to revisit my predictions, see how close I was, and see what has changed.
http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2009/9/6/1018051/glaring-and-not-so-glaring-needs

After 5 games... my new short list of needs/changes to be made:

#1 OL... Replace Goff with Ndukwe or Alleman, get a backup OT on the active roster... NOW!!!!... Then, Draft a starting Center, and possibly a new LT (Okung, Baluga) or LG in 2010.

#2 Secondary... Not sure how to improve the current mess... but they HAVE to find someone who can cover a receiver for the rest of 2009... then DRAFT Mays or Berry!!!

#3 WR... They don't seem to be getting open.  Maybe design some better routes/plays... then CUT Copper or Engram in favor of Lance Long, and get Lawrence on the field!!!!

Thoughts???

Star-divide

Glaring need #1... Offensive Line

It's been very well documented that there were problems on this line for the last couple of seasons, and most felt that Pioli hadn't done enough to address them.  Well, I don't think you can make that argument now!

By cutting Damien McIntosh, Herb Taylor, Daryl Harris, Tavarres Washington, Brian De La Puente, Eric Ghiaciuc and putting Colin Brown on IR... and trading for Alleman and Ndukwe...you can see that Pioli/Haley aren't just standing pat with an under performing line.

UPDATE :  O'Callaghan signed, Richardson cut.  More OL moves are surely on the way.

I expect Pioli to sign as many as 2 OT, and potentially a C. With 8 OL on the 53 man roster, and Wade Smith being "upgradeable", they could also cut from another position to create space for more OL depth.

the depth chart would be Albert/(FA to be named)... Waters/Wade Smith...Niswanger/ Alleman...Goff/ Ndukwe...Richardson/ (FA to be named) Ndukwe/O'Callaghan O'Callaghan/ Ndukwe

UPDATE : No moves at OT since O'Callaghan... though he's starting now and playing well.  Depth is SORELY needed, especially with Albert getting injured.

NEED:  Cut or demote Mike Goff, Start Ndukwe or Alleman at RG.  Upgrade at C is still needed... but likely won't come before the 2010 draft

Glaring need #2...Wide Receiver/KR/PR

I have been saying for a while that I thought the WR corps was underrated and that no other acquisitions were needed.  That all changed yesterday, IMO.

By cutting Taurus Johnson, Rodney Wright, Ashley Lelie, Amani Toomer...the Chiefs have made a statement that they still aren't happy at WR.

The depth chart looks like this now:  Bowe, Bradley, Bobby Wade, Lawrence, Engram, Copper.

Obviously, Bowe and Bradley are solid.  Lawrence has shown flashes of brilliance, flashes of butterfingers... but it's clear that the coaching staff sees plenty in him, and he factors into the plans in a big way.

The two questions in my opinion are Engram and Copper...they could easily be replaced and upgraded.  In my opinion, a young slot receiver that can return kicks (like Lance Long, or Edelman in NE) would be the best upgrade to this group of WR.  A home run hitter/big name Wide Receiver would be a second priority this year, but a top priority in the draft next year.

UPDATE : Bobby Wade was signed, and has played reasonbly well.  Bowe has played well at times, but receivers getting open seems to be a problem.  Lance Long was added to the Practice Squad.

NEED: Quickness and separation... Lance Long may be on his way to the active roster soon, at the expense of Bobby Engram.  KR/PR have been mediocre, but (again) I can't see an upgrade coming before the draft.

Glaring need #3... Tight End

I've said before that KC fans have been spoiled all these years with TG and Jason Dunn.  For years, we could count on one TE catching everything in sight, and another acting as a snowplow for RBs and as a 6th offensive lineman for pass protection.

Pioli/Haley obviously value the TE position differently than the prior regime.  They traded Gonzalez for a 2nd round pick, then brought in Sean Ryan and traded into the 7th to draft Jake O'Connell.

My prediction:  The Chiefs could very likely be looking to bring in a TE like Pope, Smith or Watson.  My vote continues to be for a great blocking TE, wherever they can find one.  I think they'll keep 3 TE on the roster, so O'Connell could be the odd man out if an acquisition is made... but don't be too shocked if they cut Cottam at some point.

UPDATE : Leonard Pope has signed, and is playing.

NEED: There seems to be an extra TE on the roster... Cottam or O'Connell should be off of the active roster soon.

Not-so-glaring need #1...Fullback

Mike Cox has been a serviceable FB for the Chiefs... but he's definitely a "Chan Gailey" guy.  Pioli and Haley have no reason to be loyal to Cox, as they look over the list of free agents and waived players.

My prediction:  Dan Klecko could be brought in to replace Cox.  He's huge and versatile, and was drafted by Pioli.  This could be a nice upgrade.

UPDATE:  no news... Cox is ok, no one has been signed.

Not-so-glaring need #2...backup QB

My prediction:  The Chiefs stand pat with Croyle and Gutierrez as the backup QBs.  Thigpen is traded if they can find a taker, or cut as soon as Cassel is healthy enough to play.  They'll need the roster spot to upgrade OL and WR.

UPDATE : Thigpen was traded for an undisclosed draft pick.

NEED:  None.  Cassel, Croyle, Gutierrez is the depth chart, and that's solid.

Not-so-glaring need #3... Safety

The secondary should be a strength for this team, but coverage has been soft, and turnovers have been scarce.  The fans all said KC was set in the secondary, but the new management has shown their dissatisfaction by cutting Pollard, signing Mike Brown and drafting Donald Washington.

My prediction:  The Chiefs could bring in a safety that is known to be great in coverage and a ball hawk.  If so, Ricardo Colclough is the next likely cut in the secondary.

UPDATE : Colclough was cut, but no Safety has been brought in.

NEED:  This is now a GLARING need.  Both Safety and CB (after Flowers and Carr) have had all kinds of trouble in coverage.  Not sure what can be done this year, but the case for Berry or Mays in the draft is getting stronger every week.

Yah I got a thought for you...

I can’t believe we are talking about the secondary can you? I thought that was going to be one area we were stacked in…but here we are…we didn’t get Brian Dawkins but instead brought in Mike Brown…who obviously cannot tackle…

He missed so many tackles I couldn’t believe he still got to play….but when you have no depth…your stuck…so why didn’t we get Dawkins?? I mean who needs him right?? Good Lord…it’s unreal…I agree with you …

We have to concentrate on a whole new O line next year if nothing else…and one super stud on Defense to help the rest of the guys pick up their game…

by krayfish on Oct 12, 2009 12:49 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

yeah... the secondary was supposed to be a strength

I think it’s safe to say they haven’t responded well to the new defense?

Dawkins is playing well… Brown not so well.

there's nothing to do

the Chiefs are who they are. There isn’t talent out there right now, or on the roster, to make significant improvement. All that’s really left is hope. Hope that someone sees the light and improves. The longer one is in the league, the less likely that will happen.

The only measure of true success in the NFL is the Vince Lombardi trophy. Anything less is a rationalization.

Good right up.

For drafting I’d still like to see a safety or linebacker in round one and then maybe a Ciron Black kind of guy in round two if he slips that far.

I wanted to vote

for almost all of your choices. A, B, & D need to be done ASAP! We have a lot of holes that need to be filled so next years draft should be very interesting indeed but we need to make more changes between now & then!

Good write up

I think we need to be looking at the starting o-line of Albert, Waters, Niswanger, Alleman, O’Callaghan. I want to see how it performs after a few consecutive weeks. Bring in some depth but that’s about all I would do. Let’s not waste too much time tinkering around with the roster. Let the chips fall where they may and then clean out the dead weight after the season ends.

For this year, I think Haley finally figured out yesterday that short-yardage play calling is the only way this team will be productive. Screen passes to the RB out of the backfield, use the ever-loving shit out of our poor slot receivers and hit the TE’s in the flats all for 4-7 yard plays. Start running those plays on first down instead of third and we’ll move the ball. Once that rhythm is established, we can sprinkle in a run or a longer passing play. It’s the only way we’re going to be effective on offense. Quit trying to force the run, because we suck at it and quit running trick plays because we’ve established a history of it and now it’s predictable. Dink and dunk. The old West Coast philosophy seems to be something that this group of guys can handle.

If we can find a way to be productive on offense on a consistent basis, we’ll see a better defense IMO. If we have to leave the outcome of the game in the hands of the D, forget about it. They play just fine when they don’t have all the pressure. Put the pressure on them and they give up the big play. I’m not sure how much of it is players and how much of it is the coaches, but this D has a huge problem with pressure.

agree about the OL

They HAVE to learn how to play together, and pick up their protections.

I disagree about the playcalling… I think the Chiefs have found success throwing the intermediate and deeper routes… I’d like to see more of it.

YES, Cassel needs more time to throw deeper… but the defenses can’t just be allowed to sit on all the underneath routes and stop every pass play for a 4 yd gain.

I agree with everyone, that running LJ from the shotgun is flat out dumb. Swing passes, screens, etc to Charles can work.

Quick slants to the WR can work… if they can get open.

I want to see haley keep mixing things up

I'll agree with you on the intermediate routs

but the deeper routes, I have to disagree. We’ve been terrible going deeper and it’s a combination of Cassel not having the time and our WR’s not getting separation.

I don’t want to see Haley trying to mix it up until we establish some rhythm. Do that and then mix it up. Start with what works. We can’t run for shit. We can’t go deep and we start every damn game with a trick play or three and those are no bueno because everyone knows we’re going to do it. Dink and dunk for a quick first down or two. Get the opposing defense to start playing back a bit and then bite them with a run. Bring them in a little and bite them with a deeper route. Mixing up the play calling is important, but you can’t mix it up just for the sake of mixing it up. You have to mix it up based on what you can lull your opponents into biting on. The short yardage stuff is something that we can move with all day long. When we do it, we’re pretty good at it. I’d like to see our game planning start there and build on it.

deeper routes

I think Bradley, Wade, Bowe, Ryan have all had pass receptions of over 20 yards.

Most have come near the end of the game, but that’s when the offense has looked the best.

All I’m saying is you have to have some down the field plays to help open things up

Alleman...

I have to think that either Niswanger or Goff have played their way out of the starting gig. It’s hard to tell which one is worse because the middle is consistently getting pushed into where Cassel should be standing in what should be a pocket.

I say Alleman gets the start this sunday at RG. Kind of interesting that when he came in for the injured Goff, we had positive gains on running plays behind him…

Yep

It was so instantaneously dramatic I couldn’t believe my eyes. Goff goes down and all of a sudden LJ is breaking off runs. I want to see those guys in there on the right side for a few weeks before they go tinkering with it again.

Quick plug for draft...

This will probably make a few people throw up a little for a second, but I really like Terrence Cody. Despite the fact that it seems like we do nothing but draft DL early, this guy is the real deal. He would complete our line…or at 6’5" 380, maybe he could just be the line and we drop 10 every down…I jest.

Anyways despite our glaring need for OL help, I’m not sure we go T in the first. Albert is struggling, but I think Haley and Pioli see him as their LT. That being said, I think we could use both of our 2nd rounders to snag the highest rated C and G. Keep in mind Colin Brown will be back next year and ready to compete for a spot.

by bbrock05 on Oct 12, 2009 3:02 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I hear you...

but I don’t think Cody is needed with the #1 pick

the Chiefs NTs are playing OK… not spectacular, but decent.

The Chiefs Safeties are playing terrible… not spectacular, not OK, but terrible.

A playmaker on defense is sorely needed.

That’s my pitch for Mays or Berry.

I do agree on getting C/G with the 2nd or 3rd round picks… also WR/KR, OLB, ILB… at some point in the draft

I would almost hope for 2 guards in the second

by moving Waters to center we may extend his career a couple of years beyond what he is now capable of. Also, give him a little more money and make him happy. I’ll also say this, beyond Matt Cassel, give Denver whatever they want for Ryan Clady, move Albert and fill in the OLine with the Draft.

Winning begins with Attitude - Haley and Pioli will be winners in KC!

I'll forever be a Chiefs fan! Only God himself could take that away from me, but when I get to my great reward, I'll rejoin two bigger fans, my Mom and Dad.

why not draft an ACTUAL Center?

instead of drafting a guard, and asking another guard to play Center?

Yup..

I would have no problem taking Berry or Mays. I just figure that Pioli prides himself on both sides of the trench fight… knowing that, Cody seems like the most logical pick.

But, I would not be mad if Eric Berry were starting at safety in 2010.

it does make some sense

I am just praying it doesn’t happen.

IF they are intent on drafting a lineman in the first…

go with Okung or Baluga on the OL

Its a toss up between Berry or Mays…

Berry is an instinctive player who has a knack for the big play…the comparison of Ed Reed 2.0 is legit…

Mays is a specimen; an absolutely outrageous combination of size and ability who is the more raw athlete of the two…but he has greater potential…

Its a very good position to be in when considering the two…

by butchcassidy on Oct 12, 2009 4:50 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

from that comparison

I’d probably go with Berry, for the chiefs.

not sure they need more “raw” “project” type players…

True this defense needs a player to play great now...

and Berry delivers that in spades….

But Mays has the potential to be something…I dunno, obscene in this league…Its kind of interesting to speculate just how good Mays could be…

by butchcassidy on Oct 12, 2009 5:00 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not that I'm advocating for Mays over Berry or Berry over Mays...

I’d be happy with either…I just don’t want to see a pick used on Mt. Cody. I think there are other promising NT candidates out there.

by butchcassidy on Oct 12, 2009 5:02 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm with you on that one

I think Pioli and Haley would have trouble drafting a guy with a known weight problem… so they probably will pass on Cody.

Draft

rd 1. O line stud— reshuffle everyone else accordingly
rd 2. WR
rd 2 #2 safety/5CB
rd 3 C
rd 4 LB or someone that can produce a consistent rush from the end.
rd 5 D line depth
rd 6 O line depth
rd 7 O line depth

Try and get 2-3 free agents that don’t suck when we have a full offseason to work.
