Why you shouldn't be mad, upset, or hopeless ... Part 2

Firstly, the world isn't going to end in 2012. So, rest assured there will still be football that year, and the year after. Unless that is, some sort of Knowing-esque solar flare destroys the earth and everything not snuggled up to it's core (which being filled with, ya know, magma and whatnot probably wouldn't be any better than needing 5,000,000,000 SPF and an indestructable oxygen tank that could survive on the sun, but hey, whadda I know anyway). So when 2012 eventually rolls around in just a little more than 2 years, rest assured the perennial playoff contending Chiefs will still be playing after the New Years day on 2013.

So, in much the same fashion as we've grown accustomed to over the last 30 games, the Chiefs dropped yet another win, in a game they could and SHOULD have won. Why? Lots of reasons, really, but nothing that should make you mad, upset, or hopeless.

Why you shouldn't be mad

The Chiefs are a bad team. They were bad last year, and have made a plethora of changes in the offseason. Unfortunately, those changes aren't working to their favor, as it did, say, for the Dolphins. The GM, Coaches, and numerous player turnover all attribute to where they are now as a team. I'm not saying you should be happy they are 0-5 by any means, but really, what did you expect from them?

Prior to the season starting if you thought this was anything more than a 4-5 win team you were delusional. AP's own preview of the season had the team 8-8, but we're all homers and WANT the best for the team, and hope that they're competent enough to take advantage of other teams weaknesses. But they're not. 5 games into the season, they've lost 2 games they should have won, and lost 3 more than they should have lost. Heartbreaking? Yes. Unexpected? Shouldn't have been.

Why you shouldn't be upset

Really these two sections are pretty similar... but you shouldn't be upset. With the lack of a rushing attack, Matt Cassel played.... good. Really good I thought. Also, I think it's only a matter of time before LJ is no longer the primary back. First down rushes, sure, let him go for it. After that he has no business of the field. I was willing to give him a chance to prove he's changed, and can regain that domination he once showed. Clearly, that was a result of the line in front of him, and the offense the Chiefs had at the time. Things change, and LJ is now, for lack of better words, a useless commodity in this offense. I think it was worth a shot, and that shot has been blown. Time to move on and help this team find ways to find itself and win a game. And really, that's what this season is going to be about, finding out WHO this team is, who wants to win and finish every play, and how to win in the face of adversity. They'll get plenty of that too, because looking at the remaining schedule, it really doesn't get any easier from here on out. Games that they may have had a shot at prior to the season starting are looking like almost surefire losses if they play X team on Sunday (Bengals, for instance).

Basically, this is a team rebuilding, for the long run. Their first few moves to make this team watchable haven't exactly panned out just yet, but give them a chance to find their own way. It happens when a team changes directions, there's always going to be growing pains. It still tugs at your heart strings as a die-hard fan, but you have to let them get a good foundation for what they want to do, one offseason isn't enough time to do that, no matter how many free-agent backups they brought in.

Why you shouldn't be hopeless

This is a team in transition. Everyone from top to bottom of this franchise is learning their role on the fly, and learning best how to gather players, coach them, call plays, and basically do what is best for the team in the long run and now, and finding that balancing point. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if this team rallies in the second half of the season and become a much stronger and cohesive unit. It also wouldn't surprise me after they get that first elusive win, if things change for the better coaching-wise as well. This team is talent-hungry talent-starved. So many years of bad draft picks have set the team back much farther than was anticipated earlier this year.

This loss stings as did the Oakland one. The Chiefs were in a position to win, made strides to do so, and scored when they had to and kept themselves in it and got themselves 2 OT possessions to try to put it away. A better team, a couple things done this way instead of that way, and the Chiefs could be 2-3, or even maybe 3-2. But they haven't found their way just yet. When they do, when they become a cohesive unit with playcalling to match their abilities, watch out. Until then, the bandwagon will be waiting for you to jump back on.

Im over it...

This is not our year, so why win and hurt our draft status. Chiefs played tough, kept us entertained until the end. I do hope we win a couple, I dont want #1 pick. I wanted us to win yesterday just to shut up all the obnoxious Cowboy fans. Damn, those fuckers are annoying! They trying to give the Dolphins a run for douchiest fans…

I'd rather die on my feet than be living on my knees

Well we don't want the #1 pick.

That would be too expensive. Really trading out of the top 5 is really hard to do. I think we will be sitting at the #2-3 pick again next year.

Agreed on Cowboys fans

got some here at work bragging all I had to say was man an 0-4 kansas city chiefs made you beat them in overtime? Not much to brag about I know doesnt sound good on us but its kind of the truth…. they shut up nonetheless

and they were everywhere!

That was one of my biggest disappointments with my first Arrowhead experience. I wanted the sea of red, I wanted the loudest stadium in the NFL and I wanted to see Chiefs fans everywhere I went all over town the whole weekend. What I saw instead was Cowboys fans everywhere and almost as many in navy blue than there were in red at the game.

Next year if I make another trip out, I’m going to make sure I don’t go to a Dallas or Raiders game…I want the whole Arrowhead experience :)

F’ing Cowboys!

I want to see the Chiefs go to the hurry up offense more,

The players didn’t have time to think about things they just went out and played.

Chiefs set an NFL record, most roster changes in 1 season.

And played well!

The whole up-tempo thing seemed to rejuvenate the offense & they looked much sharper when they were running the no-huddle. I’m all for it!

by ttownmikey on Oct 12, 2009 11:58 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Totally agree

It keeps the defense on their heels and makes it harder to call up blitz packages. If I was Haley I’d go no huddle first series against Washington to try and jump start the offense out of the gate. Also, in practice I’d put a stop watch on Cassel. At three seconds I blow the play dead if the ball is still in Cassel’s hand and they have to run the play over.

It's a good thing Pioli and Haley aren't running AP or a lot of you guys would of been traded or cut for cast offs from the Pats Pulpit.

Well Said Saint

This is why I wait till the day after to come to the site, i get emotional over the losses.
We aren’t the Browns, we can see a glimmer of hope from Matt Cassel. Just chillax!

"I will fight you!"
"What is your weapon?"
"My bare hands!"
"That is stupid. I will use a sword and I will cut off your bare hands."

This team is...

coaching starved. The big question is will they ruin M. Cassel before they make him.

to worry about Matt Cassel. He is a superstar.

I dont agree with your LJ opinion

I think the runs up the gut…and they accounted for 95% of his run are a terrible call. No one should ever have to run up the gut with our line. When LJ was called for a sweep play he ran outside the tackles he was looking like the young LJ. I think playcalling deserves the criticism, not LJ. He is a guy that takes one move and goes downhiill….he is not Jerome Bettis or Mike Alstott. He can make people miss he just needs the right plays to get to the open field.

LJ also needs to know where to find the holes

granted the O-Line isnt making very many for him, but when they are there he is just tucking his head and running into the line for no gain or a loss. The play calling could get better but LJ has to do a better job of scanning the field and creating the play. That is where i think Charles or Savage are better!

and why in the hell...

do we always run to the weak (right) side. i dont know the stats, but to me, it seems like we run weak about 80% of the time. can someone get me that stat?

I said to my fellow Game Watchers...

“I am at peace if we lose…”

Then I was pissed that we lost. I think it was because we beat ourselves in OT with the penalty…we just needed 20 yds and kick protection to win…but we got a penalty…

expectations...

It’s becoming easier to loose every week. In fact, I’m finding myself kind of hoping we loose just to get another “steller” draft pick. It’s going to be a competetive season this year with all the bad teams.

It's not about being fine with losing

No one should just blindly accept a loss. But the Chiefs are bad. Epically bad, in fact. It’s about tempering your expectations to be realistic, instead of astronomical, the latter of which seems to have been the norm around here for awhile.

but what do I know because I'm so negative and know nothing about anything...ever...

5 games

Is not enough to make any judgement to me. LJ looks just fine to me, he still stiff arms the hell out of people, just hard to break tackles from DeMarcus Ware, Ratliff, Brooking, Tuck, Umenyora (sp), Seymour, Ellis Etc when they get in the backfield or break the line every other play… And I agree on the outside he looked quick. But with our O-line he will look like hes useless, IMO that’s not the truth. As for playcalling I thought it improved from the previous few weeks… Bottom line, if the O-Line improves than Wins/Rushing/Passing/Pass Protection improves… It all starts at the line.

by Pollard49 on Oct 12, 2009 10:25 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Totatlly agree

But LJ + the line = 37 rushing yards… which is dismal. It’s not his fault he’s not working out, but saying it is working is living in denial. At this rate he’ll have 290 ish carries and around 700 yards; an average around 2.5 YPC, which is just bad for a starting RB.

but what do I know because I'm so negative and know nothing about anything...ever...

the rebuild is progressing

and this short term pain in unavoidable. In a few years the team will be good and because it will also be young (comparitively) it will be good for years. That’s much better than a 1 year “quickie” rebuild that only helps the team be good for 1 or 2 years and then they’re back to being a bad team.

0-5. That says all that needs to be said.

You know, I don’t even need a win to have hope with the Chiefs, just some constant improvement. The only part of the last game the Chiefs showed any life or had any hope was at the end of the 4th quarter. Up until that point, the only reason we were “in it” was not because we were beating the cowboys, but because the cowboys were beating themselves. And we still couldn’t pull it off.

Personally, I think our head coach needs to quit micro managing and acting like he’s God’s gift to the NFL. We might actually get something accomplished.

you know what...

I want to go on record as saying I think our defense is showing improvement.

I think Bowe is not given enough credit and I think we need to sweep the entire offensive line coaching team. (then most of the offensive line right behind them). Broom, baby, broom.
