Aaron Curry
Today: 10 tackes, 1 sack, 1 pass defense
Tyson Jackson today: One tackle
Safe to say so far that Pioli's first pick as a GM has been a bad one when their was a consensus #3 pick (Curry) in the draft that 31 other GM's would've taken in that position. I would've felt a lot better with him as the pick then we could have focused on the secondary or OL in the draft. Now, a play-making OLB is still a huge need.

I disagree
There is NO WAY Tyson Jackson got a tackle today. Sigh.

oh god here comes the dead horse ripe for a beating
I’m going to TRY to keep this short and simple. Jackson is a rookie defensive end. Rookie linemen take a few seasons before they start making an impact. On top of that, he’s playing in a 3-4 scheme where linemen don’t get a lot of stats. I know our line isn’t playing well right now but they’re still all really young and they show flashes, especially when it comes to stopping the run. Sure, Curry would have been nice, but we’re switching to a 3-4 and we need to build from the ground up. Plus, we have a pretty solid group of linebackers right now, our main issue is safety which I guarantee will be addressed in the first round next year.
Not if you're a TOP 3 PICK
or names such as Javon Kearse, Julius Peppers, Dwight Freeney, Haloti Ngata
I look at the 2008 draft class that played or started in 2008, they made more or an impact.
I look at the 2009 draft class – top to bottom – only Succop is making an impact. WTF!!!!!!
Predictions as of 06.24.2009.
Larry Johnson will be a top 3 fantasy pick once again in 2010 (after a monster season in 2009.)
Dwayne Bowe will be a 2009 Pro Bowl selection.
Brandon Flowers will have at least 6 INTs in 2009 season.
Todd Haley will have a sideline shouting match caught on TV yelling at one of his asst. coaches.

here's something else to chew on:
Corey Mays had close to 10 tackles as well today and we got him for a hell of a lot cheaper than a first round pick and however much they’re paying Curry.
The only thing
I can remember about mays’ day was the wiff…. You all know what I’m talking about. He blitzed up the middle and had a clean shot and barber who shook him off like he was a child.
But you don't
remember the 10 tackles. Sounds like someone who focuses on the negatives rather than the positives.
well, it would have been 10 if not for the whiff ;)
yeah, I remember the whiff but that was just a good play by Barber. I still think Mays is one of the bright spots right now. He’s not much of a coverage guy but he can stuff the run.
yeah that was a good play by barber
nobodies gonna get em all, especially in the back field. saw someone bitching about that play earlier and saying he sucked all day and that he’s a decent backup but shouldn’t be starting; i was thinking did you even watch the game!
Its like the people...
who focus on all bad calls or missed calls against the Chiefs… But never remember the breaks we get.

I see good things too...
it’s just that they are so few and far between…… I love me some corey mays… mostly because he’s an ND alum… but it doesn’t mean he’s free from criticism…. it was a good play by barber and I bet only a handful of guys in the league make the play….
YES!!! On the ND thing...

No comparison...
Positions rookie success is completely different.

And I would wager
That very few of those 31 GMs you mentioned would take a LB with the overall number 3 pick, regardless of how many ESPN analysts want them to. The LB position just doesn’t have enough value to be chosen that high. Please list how many LBs have gone in the top 3 in the history of the draft. It will be an extremely short list. Lavaar Arrington in 2000 was the last to do so (http://walterfootball.com/nfldraftpicks.php).
why does anyone care what number the pick is? if you NEED a LB or OL or whatever ...
would I spend the first overall pick on, say … a Willie Lanier or Dick Butkus? better believe it … given that this team knew it was going to a 3-4 and NEEDED more LBs I think it’s insane NOT to have gone with Curry …
or trade down a few spots, grab an extra pick, and make BOTH choices OL, an area that everyone knew was a very weak point – to be blunt, I’d have made OL a priority over QB, because a QB w/o an OL has few options and ends up getting hurt before it’s all over
fix the needs and THEN get the glamour …
Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisiton!
think we tried to trade down; you have to have someone to trade with
and i wanted an OL in the 1st, but what the hell. OL and DL are both the foundation of a team; we did alright with jackson, i think.
OL should have been a priority and it still is, but they had a chance to get an young experienced QB who they think is a franchise type guy, you gotta take him. we could have done both in free agency, but we have to have a franchise QB if we’re gonna be good long term; how many consistently great teams can you name that don’t have a top QB.
3-4
How many 3-4 DE’s have been drafted in the top 3 besides Jackson? I don’t think any have. And LB’s have a lot more value in the 3-4 than a 4-3. Look at the Steelers. Aaron Curry was a once in every 10 years talent. He might even make the Pro Bowl this year. I just would’ve felt a lot more comfortable taking the sure thing in Curry than a Jackson where his impact is more intangible and we might never really know if he is helping or hurting the defense. Next year the sure thing is Eric Berry so we’ll see what the Chiefs do.
You Are So RIGHT!!!
Jackson sucks as much as that worthless Mario Williams. Pioli is just proving he is as stupid as those idiot Texans were to take him instead of Reggie “Future HOFer” Bush. It’s widely known that these types of comparisons this soon in their careers are rock solid. It was just like the with Ryan Leaf. Three games in you could already tell he was far superior to that Peyton Manning loser. Keep up the great analysis!

Its pretty ridiculous to compare the tackles
of the DE in a 3-4 defense and an OLB in a 4-3 defense.
Why is it so hard to understand that rookie DE’s struggle… ESPECIALLY 3-4 DE’S!!!

If we get a LB next year
I think we will be that much better off as an entire defense. Tjax isnt supposed to be racking up tackles anyway. All he needs to do is clog running lanes and let the linebackers do the real work which brings me back to what I first said. As Jackson gets better over the year, the LB play should improve as well. I like where we are heading
A man who says he can, and a man who says he can't are both right. Which one are you?
Safety in the first round LBer in the Second Round...
of course this all changes if we take Ndamukong Suh. Though I seriously doubt we take a DT first round next year.

Come on man,
You’re either ignoring the role of a 3-4 DE or you just lack the football knowledge about the position. 3-4 DEs don’t rack up tackles they eat up blockers so that the linebackers can rack up tackles. Only the true monsters at that position (like Seymore) pile up good numbers themselves and as already stated even he took time to develope. For the first three quarters we were shutting down the running game of one of the top running teams in football. A lot of that has to do with our D-line (including Jackson) even if the box score doesn’t show it.
It's a good thing Pioli and Haley aren't running AP or a lot of you guys would of been traded or cut for cast offs from the Pats Pulpit.

That's the thing though
I you pick in the top 3 and want a 3-4 DE, he needs to be a monster or else you need to look somewhere else.
If we get a safety in the first round then I will beat my television to death
We don’t need a safety.
We nee offensive lineman..We need to address the need in the first round, and the second round in my opinion..We also need a playmakers opposite side of bowe..

We need a safety, just not in the first round.
I would love Berry, but it depends on where we are picking. I didn’t get to see the games, but I did see the highlights, and Brown sure didn’t clean up on the winning TD.
