Last year, Cowboys WR Miles Austin had 278 yards and three touchdowns.
Today, he had 250 yards and two touchdowns.

We should have a poll to see who will have a career day in Washington
Chiefs are 5-0 in padding the opponents stats.
When will it ever say
Last year Dwayne bowe had 7 TD’s and 1000+ yard season…now he has 15 TD’s and 2000 yards?
Bowe's on his way to 9 touchdowns
Which is a nice start.

Great, actually
He’s put up really good numbers in his first 2+ years.

I know...
I just want one of our guys to have a game like Austin did. But in reality Bowe is the only one who can have a game like that and other teams know this so they double cover him.

Question is How many yards did he get against Mo leggett?
I thought Leggett was pretty good last year but he seems to be getting burned big time this season.
by WesternChief on Oct 11, 2009 8:09 PM CDT reply actions 1 recs
Really
who’s defensive assignment was Miles? Was it Carr? Wasn’t Miles playing #2 receiver? Or was he in the slot and was Leggett his man? I hate to say it (well not really), but does anybody else think our secondary has regressed minus David Gibbs & Herman Edwards?

I Think They've Regressed Under Pendergast
Mainly because Pendergast never struck me as being any good at his job…ever. Gunther at least had a couple of years.
But then it’s important to keep in mind that last year teams didn’t really need to throw on us as much because we were one of the three worst teams at stopping the run. So Flowers/Carr/Leggett weren’t really tested.

Predictions for 2009
1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
6. The Chiefs will go 7-9 in 2009, good for 2nd in the AFC West. Revision: We go 5-11 and finish behind Oakland.
7. Ryan Succop will not perform better in 2009 than Connor Barth did in 2008.
8. The Chiefs will have a bottom 10 defense this year.
9. RB will be a problem area this season on offense.
Basically
I think that a lot of people pumped them up to being better than they actually were. Not that they’re bums or anything…they’re just young CBs who are still learning the ropes.

I think what earlier gave me the benefit of the doubt on Pendergast
was the salesjob of running diverse schemes and his ability to rotate between 4-3 and 3-4, but seeing as that we’ve completely abanonded the 4-3 you can’t help but feel a little duped

The only measure of true success in the NFL is the Vince Lombardi trophy. Anything less is a rationalization.
They're A Good Running Team
It’s just that their running backs have been injured most of the year and their defense sucks so they’re always having to put points on the board fast.

They're Averaging Six Yards Per Carry
It’s just that their top two running backs (Barber and Felix Jones) are banged up. Barber’s getting 5.7 ypc and Jones is over 10.

Plus
Their rushing attack today wasn’t even one of their better efforts because Barber was dinged up and only got 3.5 ypc. He’s been killing the NFL when healthy. Jones too. You could make the argument that Choice was smoke and mirrors because today was his best effort, but overall the Cowboys have had a potent rushing attack.

No Kidding
If they’d lost the game today, I really believe they would have fired Phillips by next Sunday. He did a pathetic job getting this team ready to play this week. Sloppy play, stupid penalties all day, and questionable lineup choices (especially Barber over Choice considering how slow Barber was running). And they’ve looked like crap the last three weeks. With the talent that team’s got on hand, he deserves to get fired.

I Think Shanahan In Dallas
Jerry Jones likes big name hires and he wants a slam dunk after the disaster that’s been Phillips. Shanahan comes closest. And he may even be willing to give up player personnel control to Shanahan (which Shanahan probably wants). Plus, there are already pieces for a very potent offense like the ones Shanahan ran in Dallas already…Washington’s a big rebuild job. Portis is probably a salary casualty next year and Campbell’s not looking like anything more than a backup quality QB.

I think he's brilliant with QB's
Jason Campbell gets a lot of shit but if werent for Zorn’s influence he’d be a lot worse. Zorn is responsible for turning Seneca Wallace into a respectable QB and helped Hasselbeck. He knows how to develop them and thats a trait I don’t ever remember existing on the Chiefs coaching staff

I'm Not So Sure That's True
Campbell’s actually started regressing the longer Zorn has been in Washington (whereas he was improving before), and I’m a little hesitant to give him that much credit for developing Hasselbeck or Wallace when a) Wallace isn’t all that good and b) Mike Holmgren was his boss, overseeing his work.
I’m starting to get the impression that Zorn trained QBs for Holmgren like Gunther and Dave Adolph built defenses for Marty. Basically by just riding the coattails of boss who did the heavy lifting for them.

Yeah. I feel I can say with confidence...
…that barring an extremely unlikely and complete turn-around Pendergast will not be DC this time next year. I don’t think he was ever thought of to be a permanant solution. If I recall the Chiefs took a very long time to decide if either he or Gary Gibbs would have the job, and the finally announced it not too long after Romeo Crennel publically announced that he would not return to the NFL in 2009 to allow time to recuperate from some surgery he had.
My guess has always been that they were banking on hiring Crennel as DC and both Pendergast and Gibbs were hired as contingency plans (Pendergast moreso as Gibbs has shown some success as LBs coach, if i’m not mistaken).
If things don’t seriously turn around there in a big way, I see Clancy being fired at the end of the season and KC will either go after Crennel again, or another defensive-minded head coach who are thought of – at least at the moment – of being in danger of losing their jobs at the end of the year (I.e. Dick Jauron, Wade Phillips come to mind off the top of my head although neither have coached for the Cardinals or the Patriots. :D)
Bottom line: I think Pendergast was hired as a “stop-gap” coach, and was probably not intended to be DC in 2010, let alone 2009.

Austin’s always been a talented receiver…he’s just never gotten an opportunity to start because he was playing behind Owens, Williams and Crayton (who, by the way, still makes me wonder how in the hell he’s had a career this long because the guy is the epitome of mediocrity and a half-assed work ethic).

Cutting Pollard was a big fuckup, Pioli
I know Brown had his fumble recovery and manages to get in on a lot of plays, but thats what strong safeties do. Vrabel outrunning Brown in the chase of Miles on his last TD of regulation.

Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes; after that, who cares?! He's a mile away and you've got his shoes!
I still think there were a lot of positives today...
Dorsey looks like he’s ready to ball. Jackson didn’t do much but didn’t get bitched on. No new weaknesses exposed, we already knew the interior oline was weak and that we can’t cover anything. Colquitt continues to be the team’s MVP and if he makes the Pro Bowl I may have to reconsider my adults wearing jerseys stance.

Miles Austin will probably never have a game that good again
But that isn’t because he sucks. Today’s game was a combination of opportunity (Williams injury), ability (he clearly has good hands and speed), poor quality of opponent (bad angles, terrible “tackling” by the secondary), and overuse (he was thrown to 15 times, of course he’s going to pile up stats unless he’s totally horrible).
I think he could be a good player down the road for the Cowboys. I know nobody had ever heard of him before today, but every good player had to have a breakout game at some point didn’t they? I don’t think he’s a pro bowler or anything, but he’s the best WR in Dallas right now.

I’d stay away from Braylon like Maurice Legget stays away from recievers.

He'll Be Better In NY
He’d have to be, considering the QB crapfest that is Derek Quinn and Brady Anderson. Or did I get those names confused? :)
It’s really pathetic how Derek Anderson can win a game with an 11% completion rate. The Bills GM should have fired Dick Jauron before the post-game press conference.

I thought you were exagerating till I looked it up
The Browns won with a QB that went 2 for 17 for 23 yards. That is the most amazing stat I’ve seen in a long time.

Nope
Within a month Anderson broke JaMarcus Russell’s NFL record for “worst winning performance by a starting QB”. It’s pathetic.
Add Mangini’s name to the list of coaches who deserve to be fired after this season or sooner (along with Zorn, Phillips, Cable, Del Rio, and Jauron).

What's up with Page?
He looks out of position on almost every play. I think he has to be worried about his playing time.
