Cassel Clarification
Unfortunately some people do not understand or fail to read what was written so I will make my feelings on Cassel clear.
I want to start off by saying he played a much better game against the Cowboys, however there was still instances where he had the same problems I have criticized.
1. I do not think that Cassel should be benched. I threw the idea out there because of Haley's attitude towards PT (See DJ, Bowe, Tyler, Charles, various RTs)
2. I think that Cassel will be fine on a team with superstar receivers and a good line.
3. I love his leadership. You can tell this guy learned a lot about leadership from Brady.
4. I love his toughness. One thing he learned from someone other than that pussy Tom Brady. If you question what I mean, look no futher than Tom telling the refs when to throw flags when he is hit. I havent seen Matt try to get a flag on a hit on himself (although I have counted at least 4 times against the cowboys and Giants where they dove at his legs or struck him in the head). On the other hand Matt is always looking out for cheap hits on his guys and lobbys for those calls.
5. His pocket awareness is terrible. Again, he looked better against the Cowboys but still made some critical errors in this aspect.
6. He doesnt look down the field when he has time. He did very well at this against the Cowboys. I havent watched the short cuts yet but I dont remember seeing him check down when a guy open deep. He took some big shots and did a pretty good job of getting the pass off and it wasn't always a 2 or 3 yard pass on 3rd and 18. He still has a ways to go but I am pleased with the progress on this end.
7. He is not accurate at all on his deep passes. The final drive of regulation might be the only time this season when he has thrown any accurate passes over 10-15 yards.
8. His decision making is very suspect. The Oakland game at halftime he cost the team a FG. That is prime evidence. But it goes further than that. He took a penalty for delay right after a penalty against the Oline in the 4th quarter against the Cowboys. you cant put your self in a 3rd and more than 20...
9. He doesnt appear to do any pre-snap reads...This one is hard to prove it is just how I see it when I watch him
10. He doesnt move down his progressions. Some of this could just be that he doesnt have time on most passing plays but even when he has time, it seems like he has a primary receiver and if that is not open he goes to the outlet. I hope this is more that he does not "own" the offense yet and might not remember his progressions on every play.
My biggest problem with him is that we payed for a Franchise type guy that can make things happen and what we appear to have is a game manager type guy that won't screw it up but will not make plays needs someone else to be the playmaker.

Cassel is better than Croyle and Thig at least.
I love the 7TD 2INT stat he has going so far.
Bowe and Wade FTW.
When you fail to prepare, you prepare to fail.
Is that the best you want for the Chiefs?

yeah we are
we’re not good, but we’re better than Radiers, and Rams and Browns (even though they won a magical 6-3 game today)
Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisiton!
I havent seen
evidence of that. In fact we lost to the Raiders at home. Hard to say were better than them.

cassel is twice the quaterback that russel is at least his passer rating says so

But our qb basically has the whole team on his shoulders. He obviously cant trust his D, as we all saw. Keeps us in the game and what dooes the D do? fail him

what else would have wanted cassel to do, he gave a chance to win, maybe instead of ragging on him as the reason were 0-5, maybe you should blame the d thats gives up 500 yards weekly and that lost us the game today
The offense did nothing
except one drive in the 4th. The D got the ball back to the offense and the offense ended up 3rd and more than 15 how many times? I am not blaming Cassel, but you cant blame the D. This is a blowout if the D didnt show up

I believe
thats a better place to point finger than at cassel
D isn't exactly tearing it up either
Both are having problems of their owm, but remember, the D is having a terrible time getting teams OFF the field!
i believe
special teams had a turnover, we let an average QB throw for 350, a 3rd string wr go for 250, and over 150 rushing.
500 yards for the other team
the d is terrible
same way with grienke
he does good just gets no run support
We cant just point to cassel
when are d is giving up 400 or 500 yards every game peyton manning wouldnt make the playoffs
and are running game, that also dosent help the cause when they know they can stop our run with four down lineman and no one blitzing
I was talking about
Him being better than Thigpen and Croyle

Today's NFL teams throw to set up the run.
Gotta move the chains with the pass, and that ain’t happenin’, so the run ain’t gonna happen.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.
From a guy who has no line, an unknown TE, and only D bowe
To throw for 253 yards and 2 td’s is special.
He led us down the field and gave us a shot to win this thing. For him to have 7 td’s and 2 int’s is incredible, given what he has. You know he was hit or sacked 26/34 times he dropped back to pass?
I personally think that fairweather fans like you bones, need to just shut up and cheer for another team. Honestly. You dissrespect Brady and call him a pussy? I don’t like him but show some respect. Stop dissing Cassel saying he needs a superstar lineup, because today he didn’t need one to beat the cowboys, he needed a team that has as much heart as he does. Larry Johnson is the real problem. He has a terrible attitude, and should be cut or traded.
That is a rude, unwarrented
personal attack. I am not a fair weather fan and you can find someone else to attack. I never dissed Cassel. If I see any “dissing” it is the people on LJ. I think what I wrote is more than fair.

Ummmm...Tom Brady IS a pussy.
Hate to put a damper on it for you but, it’s true. The refs protecting Brady is so blatantly obvious it’s almost comical.
Which reminds me, Why in the hell is that every time the Chiefs complete a pass inside of 2 minutes, the officials review it to make sure??? It’s like they are trying to create new ways to pencilwhip the Chiefs as if they aren’t doing a good enough job of that as it is. (see the fumble no call in the first quarter if you don’t believe me)
BTW: That play would have has us in FG range and we would have won if it had not been for that.

No he's not
better than Croyle or Thigpen. Both of them are more mature and have better pocket presence. I agree with bones except the part about leadership. I don’t think you can have leadership until you start winning on a consistent basis. The Chiefs don’t have leadership right now and that’s part of the problem.
Hes not better than Croyle or Thig?

I think he will be more than fine, hes fine now i think if we get some talent around him and a running game he can be a top 10 QB
Damn I like LJ
but he is killing me. He is NOT a draw type rusher…we need to stop using him as such, throw JC in there for draws.
I likes when we got some throws to him out of the backfield, but it is clear that he has lost a step or 2. He is the type of back that needs a head of steem into the pile and our line cannot give that to him at this point.
LJ was great back then, but hes no Priest Holmes.

This is why they consider not allowing posts for a period after games...
All up and down this thread, jumping to foolish conclusions and trying to get people riled up…shameless
Don't forget to be an AP-vangelist...Tell A Friend...
I agree with a lot of what you said
other then the Tom Brady remark. Tom Brady is one of the greatest QB’s of all time, and is a very humble and unselfish person. I know he takes a pay cut on purpose to lower the Patriots cap, I don’t know of any other player that would do that. Plus if a player did something to me that was illegal I would bitch too, it’s not just because he’s a baby it helped his team out.
Great post...extremely accurate and don't worry...
we could go 0-84 and never win a game in 6 years straight and some one would still be on here telling us how wrong and stupid we are for not seeing how wonderful we are.
First off, you can’t sit Cassel now. That’s preposterous…and your right, that’s not going to happen. It shouldn’t happen. You got to give the guy the confidence he needs to feel secure and comfortable. But you also owe him some type of legitimate protection.
The fact that you think he will be great behind a great offensive line with some dangerous offensive weapons is bad news though….very bad news. It shouldn’t take that to make someone great. If it does, he isn’t great. Which he isn’t anyway but that’s besides the point.
He is to other teams what maybe Hill is from San Fran. Someone who finally this year is earning an ounce of respect..and I stress the word EARNING…but who in the previous couple of years has been a wishy washy QB.
That’s how other teams see him anyway. If you jump around the internet and search for articles on Cassel, he is not a highly regarded QB and rightfully so. But it’s no different anywhere else. All teams sites do the same thing. There’s people here in Tampa where I live that said the EXACT same shit about Dilfer. OH he’s soooo good, it’s just this …it’s just that…it’s just it’s just…and I said the same thing then to them…it’s just nothing other than what it is. What you see, what you read statistically is the truth. That’s it.
Humans have the inate ability to bypass the logic button and the reality button in order to see what they want to see. I’m behind Cassel because he is my QB. It’s that simple. But he IS absolutely not confident at times. He DOES make very critical misreads and errors.
In other words, he has a LONG way to go. But he is a very inexperienced QB. Very muc so and it’s to be expected. But like Chris’ article about the stats on the front page of AP…stats don’t lie in this case. We are ranked where we’re ranked because we are that bad including Cassel everyone…he doesn’t walk on water and he isn’t a super QB.
His long ball last year according to the Patriots themselves…was not his strong point…he’s a mid range passer…anything past that and he has about a 50/50 shot at hitting his target…he’s missed all year on long passes…all year…
I kept my mouth shut the first two games of the season because it was WAY too early to judge anyone on our team period. But we’re 5 games in and this is not little league…the pros dont need excuses…we just don’t get it done period….
but cassel may or may not turn out to be the answer; that still remains to be seen. We just don’t know yet.
Actually, I'm one who thinks Dilfer was underrated.
He got stuck on some teams with weaknesses at wideout. But he made a lot of very tough throws under tough conditions on the way to a championship. I remember when Karl (the truth) Williams was his main deep threat being taken out by the Packers and suddenly Dilfer was mediocre, again. It wasn’t Dilfer. It was lack of good targets.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.
#7
scares me the most. It’s not only his down field accuracy that sometimes leaves a lot to be desired, some of his short game too, has been suspect.
He needs some more starts before I would be willing to call this a major concern.
One aspect of keeping INTs down is playing to not give the defender a chance and to give the receiver a chance.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.
Very good post, bonesjackson. I've been wanting to do one of these, myself, because I see much the same things.
2. I think that Cassel will be fine on a team with superstar receivers and a good line.
I think that’s true. The question is, can he be part of a contender with GOOD receivers and a good line.
3. I love his leadership. You can tell this guy learned a lot about leadership from Brady.
I agree. But for all the eager learning he was doing all offseason, you’d think he’d have a better command than he appears to have.
4. I love his toughness.
Me, too.
5. His pocket awareness is terrible. Again, he looked better against the Cowboys but still made some critical errors in this aspect.
Wouldn’t say it’s TERRIBLE, but, like Donovan McNabb a few years back, he doesn’t seem to know the difference between an all-out blitz where the ball HAS to come out quick and a 3- or 4-man rush, when he could do just a LITTLE somethin’ with his feet to buy time, rather than forcing an early pass against 8 men in coverage. There was no objective reason for Dallas to get a sack on him sending only 4, especially late in the game, when those guys were flaggin’, regardless of the absence of Albert.
6. He doesnt look down the field when he has time.
Like Thiggy before him, he seems to be another KC QB who’d rather pull it down and run than use the extra second to survey the field. This tendency has surfaced SINCE coming to KC. It was one of the clear DIFFERENCES between Cassel in New England and Thigpen in KC, when I was scoutin’ Cassel.
7. He is not accurate at all on his deep passes. The final drive of regulation might be the only time this season when he has thrown any accurate passes over 10-15 yards.
First off, you’re trying to put it where the defender can’t make a play on it and to give your receiver a chance to make a play. It looks to me like Cassel doesn’t yet have receivers who can make a play on a few of those. Still some receivers not necessarily going where Cassel expects. And yeah, still some overthrows.
8. His decision making is very suspect. The Oakland game at halftime he cost the team a FG. That is prime evidence. But it goes further than that. He took a penalty for delay right after a penalty against the Oline in the 4th quarter against the Cowboys. you cant put your self in a 3rd and more than 20…
This was very troubling to me. Looked like a QB with very little actual authority on the field, and defenses FEAST on that shit.
9. He doesnt appear to do any pre-snap reads…This one is hard to prove it is just how I see it when I watch him
Agree. The pass and playcall seem to have NOTHING to do with what the defense is showing by formation, and, when in shotgun, after the snap. You can say “There was unblocked defender!” but LOTS of QBs face unblocked defenders, and KNOW that means they oughta have a mismatch somewhere else on the field, and I see NONE of that.
10. He doesnt move down his progressions. Some of this could just be that he doesnt have time on most passing plays but even when he has time, it seems like he has a primary receiver and if that is not open he goes to the outlet. I hope this is more that he does not “own” the offense yet and might not remember his progressions on every play.
“Ownership” of the offense is a biggie for me, too.
11. My biggest problem with him is that we payed for a Franchise type guy that can make things happen and what we appear to have is a game manager type guy that won’t screw it up but will not make plays needs someone else to be the playmaker.
Not unreasonable coin for a player with an 11-5 season and all that he showed last season. What’s unreasonable about it is throwin’ him to the wolves before anything decisive was done on O-Line. I’m concerned that a season like this one could ruin him before he really gets a chance to find a comfort zone.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.
