Chiefs Have No Answer for WR Miles Austin in OT Loss to Cowboys

about 1 month ago: Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Miles Austin (19) races Kansas City Chiefs safety Jarrad Page (44) to the goal line during overtime of an NFL football game Sunday, Oct. 11, 2009, in Kansas City, Mo. Austin scored the game winning touchdown on the play. (AP Photo/Ed Zurga)

Chiefs lose, 26 to 20 in overtime to the Dallas Cowboys.

This isn't meant to be an all-inclusive post game post. Just a few thoughts I had. We'll have much, much more to come. Joel is in the locker room as we speak.

Here's the stat you need to know: Cowboys WR Miles Austin had 250 yards receiving and two TDs, including the 60-yard game winner in overtime.

I am crushed. Speechless. Heart broken.

The Good

  • Dwayne Bowe's TD catch to put the game into overtime.

The Bad

  • Larry Johnson looks slow relative to the rest of the players on the field.
  • Cassel's downfield accuracy has yet to impress me.
  • Poor tackling allowed the Cowboys to set up scores and to even score, as we saw with the Miles Austin TD in the fourth quarter.
  • Give up the big play much?

The Ugly

  • The offensive line. Matt Cassel will not last an entire season getting hit nearly 20 times per game.
  • The running game. Back to the offensive line, there was rarely a hole to run through for the Chiefs running backs.
  • Third downs. We're terrible at them. More on this later.

Austin with 250 yards receiving and 2 TD

nuff said…..so much for our secondary being our strength. that is fucking horrible

It would be great if our secondary could tackle...

Leggett not making that tackle, and more importantly all the missed tackles that should have been made by our Defense on Choice(granted this wasn’t all the secondary’s fault) is what lost the game.

LJ runs for 1800 yards
Bowe in the pro bowl
Chiefs D finishes in the top 10 in points allowed
Chiefs 10-6

This one hurt

because Dallas was TRYING to give us the game, like we did Oakland. And we wouldn’t or couldn’t do the little bit needed to take it from them. I suspect there will be some serious line up changes after this.

How can one coach make so many terrible play calls?!? It’s almost astounding, as I’m sitting there watching the game to see him continue to call run plays. WE NEEDED 15 YARDS TO GET INTO FIELD GOAL RANGE, AND KC HASN’T RUN IT CONSISTENTLY ALL GAME. STOP TRYING IT.

The game wasn’t televised here in San Diego, judging by the comments made and the final outcome, I am glad. 250 yards receiving for a no name like Austin? Unbelievable. Two games lost at home that we should have won, this one and against Oakland. It is going to be a long painful season.

I agree that LJ is looking slow

I wonder if we wouldn’t do better with Charles and Savage. We have to be able to get a running game going or we’ll need to go back to the Arrowspread just to keep Cassel healthy.

by Sparbs on Oct 11, 2009 3:43 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Absolutely

Having no holes is one thing.

But LJ just looks like he’s in slow motion out there.

Charles looked pretty quick, and was running like he meant it, on the few carries he had.

by jonnyu on Oct 11, 2009 3:56 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't even know what to say to that

I thought Charles and Savage’s speed was why LJ looked so slow. I can’t even imagine what you’ve seen that would make you say that.

Why in the hell was Leggett covering Austin after the dude has been burning us the entire game?!?!?!

Because...

Legget covering Austin is why he was burning us. The catch 22. Legget gets burned by everyone cause he sucks in coverage. Anyone he covers burns us and it just so happens that Legget covered Austin on at least 2 of his big plays. Hes gotta do something while hes in there I guess. I hope he doesn’t play for the rest of the season.

I don't care how bad the line is

you can game plan a running game just like a passing game unless your RBs are too slow. And I think LJ is too slow.

I agree

I’m not ready to write him off behind that line, but it’s not completely their fault either. He needs to take off the dress. I’m sick of seeing 3rd down passes thrown five yards BEHIND the first down marker. It’s just stupid.

Not sure how everyone is saying the defense lost the game.

The defense was the only reason there was a game in the first place. The offense sucked all game and it wouldnt have even come to that Austin TD if the offense couldve moved it all of 15 yards to FG range in OT.

The Big Problem

Someone is going to have to explain why this team gives up so many big plays after the 1st guy misses a tackle. It is a freakishly frequent occurence. Players will miss tackles time to time- you have to plan for that. But for this defense to constantly give up TDs when only 1 guy misses a tackle is unbelievable, and that would seem to point directly at the coaching staff.

Everything on offense boils down to this line again

and nothing is going to change until the talent gets better. Playing and practicing together is not going to make a difference.
We saw what Cassel could do with time to throw and we saw our RBs getting killed in the backfield again.
We can talk about Leggett and all the big plays we want, but the same thing every week is going to be OLine

by ttownmikey on Oct 11, 2009 3:53 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Dallas started dropping back and quit blitzing most of that drive, thus giving Cassell time

This group has no clue when the other team brings blitz. It didn’t look a whole lot better before Albert got hurt. I will say that when Allemen came in for Goff, we could actually run the ball some.

I can't see this team winning more than 2 games

We basically have toss ups with Cleveland, Buffalo, and the Raiders.

Sickening. The defense is on the field for(what seems like) 80% of the game. It’s their fault for having inexperienced secondary players that are not yet at the stage where they can jump routes and follow the QB’s eyes. The run defense is nothing special.

The offense…is there anyone out there besides Bowe? Wade is at best a 3rd receiver. Cassel is too inconsistent and doesn’t show up before the 4th quarter. The line is constantly in the backfield. LJ is done. We need him to get off the field. He’s too slow to be anything more than a 2nd and short/goal line back.

As for Cassel sucking…I don’t have enough data to speculate. With the Pats he was 11-5. The line is where games are won, and he doesn’t have an offensive line.

Special teams is non-existant. We don’t have a kick/punt returner and haven’t since Hall was an all-star. Succop seems decent and I don’t think he’s going to be a liability, since it will be a while before this team is competitive with the top teams.

True, but

The Royals are generally expected to be less than stellar.

The Mets love to start off with a ton of talent, begin the season in 1st place and look like they’re going to steamroll to the playoffs.

Then mid-season comes, everyone and their housekeepers get injured, and they finish 203948230948 games out by the end of the season. At least they’re consistent at it, so I can expect the disappointment.

Maurice Legget. Once again Capt. Failure (AKA: Maurice Legget ) falls off coverage for 6 to the other team. Maybe Stephan Hawking’s wouldn’t be such a bad replacement. As far as offense goes I believe we are now 14 of 108 on third down conversions, what a sick joke this team has become/remains.

The Bad

    * Larry Johnson looks slow relative to the rest of the players on the field.

How many times did LJ have a defender in his face as soon as he received the hand off, especially on these lame @ss draw plays that continue to fool no one! The offensive line is a complete waste of skin and are going to get people hurt. The play calling in OT was utter BS and did not give us a chance to do a damn thing except fail which we did. The other thing I am getting fed up with is the officiating. The “play was ruled dead” in the 1st quarter was BS, no whistle ever blew! Also, for what bloody reason was there a need to review either reception on the drive that tied the game at 20? Both were clear catches!!! Oh, the the blocked field goal, on the replay the defender climbed over 2 chiefs backs to block it.

by Tooner on Oct 11, 2009 3:52 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Agreed on LJ

They kept trying to run up the middle. There was nothing there. If I’m not mistaken, they did not attempt an outside run until late in the 4th quarter. It’s like a pitcher constantly throwing 85mph fastballs down the middle (and his name isn’t Mariano Rivera).

This is the first game where I'm ready to agree with that

Dallas was the 26th ranked defense coming in to this game (we were ranked 28th). I’ve been willing to give this O a pass for the past few games, but we should have been able to establish something this game and we didn’t. I’m starting to question whether Haley needs to figure out how to build a running game. He was never able to do it at Arizona, even though they had the players. I’m starting to get concerned. I’m not calling for his head, but I hope he takes a serious look at how he fixes this over the next couple of weeks.

by Big Chief on Oct 11, 2009 4:04 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

If we were playing a top defense I'd agree

but these are still pro athletes and therefore capable of playing, even if they are the worst line in the league. Dallas’ D was ranked almost as low as ours. Haley should have been able to make a game plan to work against them. Their passing D was actually ranked lower than us. I would expect a good OC to be able to game plan to take advantage of that.

by Big Chief on Oct 11, 2009 4:25 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

He took a team that we had no purpose of beating into OT with a chance to win

If that isn’t good coaching, I don’t know what is. If you thought coming into this game that we should have matched up with Dallas, I think you are wrong.

by averagegatsby on Oct 11, 2009 4:58 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

They are way better then US.

A seven point spread during a home game by Vegas, I think is a pretty clear indicator of that. I think you are wrong about how close these teams are in talent.

by vincent2668 on Oct 11, 2009 5:08 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

You base Dallas being better than us because of a Vegas spread?

There is more to building a football team than talent. Dallas is a very poorly coached team and they are only going to get worse as this season goes on. Dallas will not make the playoffs this year.

The Ravens, Giants and Eagles are way better than us, the Cowboys are not. I think if we played the Cowboys 5 more times we beat them 2 or 3 times, I dont get that feeling with the Giants Eagles or Ravens.

Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures

by averagegatsby on Oct 11, 2009 5:17 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I just put the spread out there as one indicator

I think from what I saw on the field; If we played them 5 more times. Today would be as close as we get. You want to compair our team to others, you need to start naming teams like Clev, Oak, Tampa Bay…NOT the Dallas Cowboys.

by vincent2668 on Oct 11, 2009 10:02 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

First - don't misquote me

I didn’t say we should have “matched Dallas” (whatever that means). I said we should have been able to establish something on offense. That was all I was really looking for. Dallas is not a highly ranked defense and has shown itself quite vulnerable. The fact that we still couldn’t establish an offense against them is the what has given me a real concern about Haley.

t We had a chance of beating them because Dallas is a poor team (though talented) who did almost everything they could to give us that game. Two turnovers and 13 penalties are why we were in that game.

by Big Chief on Oct 11, 2009 10:36 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

OK, I'll make myself clear as well

I don’t care what ranking Dallas D is. 26 or 31. Our offense / more importantly our O-line against their D-line is not even close. I don’t see how after watching that game and previous Chiefs games, that our offensive line would be able to do anything to control the D-line. You tell me what great game plan any coach could come up with to compensate for an O-line that cant block long enough to throw the ball or well enough to run the ball.
I think Haley did all he could as a coach against this team given the situation.

by vincent2668 on Oct 11, 2009 11:00 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think that 2min drill at the end of the fourth to send it into OT...

was indicative to Cassell’s potential. The guy has the guts and the endurance to stand behind our O-Line which was letting him get manhandled back there all day long. But when push came to shove and the Chiefs needed him to step up he did.

Regardless of the fact that we got a couple of breaks on that drive (any good team does get them) it was a tremendous positive to see Cassell take control their at the end.

Now our offensive line just needs about 5-7 new body’s (starters and depth included)…

Defensively…

We need work…nuff’ said

I like Hali as a rushing OLB. I dont know how…but he is working. Those are tough to find. If we find a natural “good” rushing OLB moving him to the weak side might also be a smart move.

We could get a more natural DE if we could get a high to mid first for Dorsey. I think it is a crime to keep him from his Sapp esque potential. Im thinking Buccaneers.

Not totally wrong

Chiefs let a lot of missed opportunities go by. Missed tackles in backfield. Missed sacks on Romo. Tackling really hasn’t improved much at all.

its just that the Chiefs seem to be the worst at it in the NFL

It wouldnt be a stretch to blame the special teams coach.

The way they blocked the FG was because of an issue they had last week and I guarantee Ratliff saw it because he tried it on the first FG and got his timing right on the second. No way the other team should be picking up on a clear error and we dont

Is Haley’s tendency to give the ball to LJ on draw plays. HES A BIG MAN!!! Let him gain momentum with the dive and pick up 2-3 yards at least

IF you look at the replay on the blocked FG why is the front 4 from Center out left and right in a bear crawl stance on all fours? They’re basically acting like human hurtles which is what happened when the guy blocked it

I'm just saying that the coaching did not lose the game.

It was a matter of our line getting killed all game. If you can’t judge Cassell because the line sucks so bad, then you cant blame Haley for the same reason. His hands are tied with the plays he can call due to the talent on this team. And how many of the plays he calls get killed before they develope due to missed O-line blocks

Monday To-Do List

1. Solve Larry Johnson mystery. Scan today’s injury list to see who might need a running back. See if they have a back-up DB who can tackle. See if you can make a trade. No? Then see if you can get a draft pick, any pick. No? Cut him. Kolby Smith, Battle, Charles and Savage can get us 50 yards a game. LJ adds nothing to this team.

2. Cut all defensive backs who cannot tackle. If you can’t tackle, you can’t play in the NFL. Not looking good for you, Maurice. Austin “one of the biggest days in Dallas Cowboys history”. Thanks for making it possible.

3. Identify offensive coordinator candidates for next year. If you get the ball on the 50 in OT, and can’t make a first down, something is wrong.

4. Eliminate offensive pass interference penalties. Do we have more of these than anybody?

We need an offensive coordinator

Play calling killed us, 1st and 20 we call a run, seriously we have averaged about -1 on running plays today and we are going to run it? How about a quick slant to the TE our leading receiver again. I understand trying to run the ball, but our line can’t handle running the ball, get the D to move back with the passing game then you can run the ball, my god these people should maybe try playing some Madden it will give them some tips!

Were there any playactions called today? I know play fakes don’t work great when you can’t run the ball, but at least it might have given Cassel a split second extra on some of those plays.

I saw a couple, but they were kind of half-assed

I don’t think anyone bit on them, really. I think we need to work with Cassel on improving his play fake technique and run 8-10 playaction passes per game. That would keep the defense guessing.

A big subproblem

is that they don’t finish the job when they get pressure. I thought with Haley, this team would be much better at finishing plays on both sides of the ball. They still miss too many tackles and don’t finish enough blocks. though.

by paChiefsFan on Oct 11, 2009 4:19 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

They missed more than 2 tackles

They missed a few sacks, and they missed some tackles in the backfield on Barber and Choice. Tackling is still poor. It might be a bit better than last year, but not by much.

by paChiefsFan on Oct 11, 2009 4:21 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I can't see how you can say it's far better

I think the d-line’s tackling is better. The linebackers’ tackling is erratic- sometimes it’s good, sometimes it’s terrible. The secondary’s tackling has regressed enormously, and that’s what brings the defense down.

by paChiefsFan on Oct 11, 2009 4:24 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think our secondary tackled like this last year (Pollard alone missed a ton). I agree it’s better, but that’s only relative to the incredibly bad job we did last year.

This ref crew calls so many penalties but really +2 in turnovers needs to be a win and we;ve done it twice this year and lost both games. A win here wouldve gone a long way with a beatable redskins team next week and an anything can happen divisional game the week after.

by GenericBrand on Oct 11, 2009 4:28 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

A couple things i noticed during the game.

1. The Offensive line is HORRIBLE. Not one good thing to say about them. Cassel getting hit 20+ times during a game is unacceptable. Albert is regressing and the rest of our line is crumbling.
2. Our Defense. The front 3-4 were getting smashed all day by the run game. They had a couple good stops but other than that we were getting ran over.
3. Our Safeties couldn’t cover, and when they were there they couldnt wrap up and tackle. I guess Pendergasts words of “always wrap up” went in 1 ear and out the other.
4. Washington is awful, a couple of big plays would have gone through if only the WR had caught the ball because Washington was 5-6 yards back.
5. Corners weren’t covering that well…they had a took a step back in this game, IMO.
6. Matt Cassel needs to get more accurate. When he decided to actually play it was in the last minute of the game.
7. Our play calling…wasn’t too bad this game but still had some pretty bad calls.

I have never wanted to hurt a man so bad until today. Cowboy fans are obnoxious and very, very, very lucky there were people there or else i would have slammed his head through the bar.

by Wrestler189s on Oct 11, 2009 4:23 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree for the most part

I do think that if we could ever get pressure constantly on the QB…our DB play would be very improved.
Also, I don’t know how Cassell can become more accurate when getting smashed all game. I’m impressed that guy isn’t putting up INTs with the pressure he always gets.

by vincent2668 on Oct 11, 2009 4:27 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Forgot about the pressure on the QB...

and when we do put pressure and have a chance to sack the QB…WE NEVER DO IT!
When Cassel had time he was making bad throws…he is lucky that Wade didn’t catch the ball at the end over the middle because if he did then Wade would be done for the season after the hit that the S would have left him.

name one good o line that doesn’t have a rockstar RB or RB’s

NE doesn't have a great O-Line

they are mediocre at best. They are helped out by Brady getting the ball out so fast. Cassell was the most sacked QB last year.

by averagegatsby on Oct 11, 2009 4:33 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Makes me wonder

We’ve seen Cassell slow to release the ball this year. I heard some Pats fans complain that Cassell’s weakness was his quickness in releasing the ball. So it may not be the Pats’ oline’s fault.

by paChiefsFan on Oct 11, 2009 4:36 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I read somewhere...

that the O-line is to blame for a bad run game, and the QB’s are the fault of sacks. Brady and Manning get the ball out fast, which is why they never get sacked.

Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures

by averagegatsby on Oct 11, 2009 4:40 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, if you are going to go that route

your receivers need to get seperation. Which isn’t happening either.

by vincent2668 on Oct 11, 2009 4:40 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I dont know about that...

Brady and Manning are more comfortable with their ability. And know their receivers much better. When Bowe and Cassell are as thick as thieves and know each what each other will do every time you will get more of that.

Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures

by averagegatsby on Oct 11, 2009 4:42 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Bowes was getting yelled at today for not getting seperation

on several routes. And when see a wide shot of the field, our WR never have any space. That’s all

by vincent2668 on Oct 11, 2009 4:44 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

that seems goofy to me

Bowe’s never going to get great separation. That’s just not his game. He’s the kind of player who makes the tough catches over the middle, not a guy who will blaze past a DB on a go route.

by paChiefsFan on Oct 11, 2009 4:45 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes Seperation is nice...

but Ive seen Manning make completions to Marvin Harrison when he had no business throwing him the ball.

QB’s and receivers get a feel for throwing to back shoulder and other things of that nature.

Well, I'm not going to argue that Cassell is not as good

as 2 of the Best QBs in the NFL. I was not trying to make that point. I didn’t think anyone expected Cassell to be Manning or Brady. Sorry for the confusion.

by vincent2668 on Oct 11, 2009 4:50 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That wasn't my initial point...

Im just saying that the when the QB and WR have a better feel, separation isn’t as important.

And that when that working relationship is better the pass protection will look better because the ball is coming out faster.

instincts

It’s not only that, but Manning can sniff a blitz or sack before the defense even does, and Brady can sense exactly when he has to get rid of the ball.

by paChiefsFan on Oct 11, 2009 4:42 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think you sense it

I know it’s hard, but that’s all the more reason to get rid of the ball quicker.

by paChiefsFan on Oct 11, 2009 4:45 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Look, its an all out Jail Break most of the time with this

line. It is not the same as feeling pressure from the right or picking up a blitz. This is not even close to the situations you are talking about. If you put Brady or Manning behind this same line, you would see much of the same you see from Cassell at this point. Even with receivers in place that they have worked with.

by vincent2668 on Oct 11, 2009 4:53 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

No, my point is

Cassell needs to realize that pressure is coming fast, no matter from where, so he needs to get rid of the ball faster. I do think Manning or Brady would take their lumps, sure, but I think they’d also know they need to get rid of the ball faster.

by paChiefsFan on Oct 11, 2009 4:55 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

There is nobody to get rid of the ball to!

Most of the time it’s the RB out of the Backfield and you saw that never worked when going that route. CB and LBs are sitting on short quick routes against the Chiefs, because they know we will have no time to do any other passes.

by vincent2668 on Oct 11, 2009 5:01 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

it's not just about completing passes

I think Cassell’s very fortunate to slip out of many sacks. The only time I’ve ever seen him throw the ball away is when he’s running to the sidelines anyway.

by Wrestler189s on Oct 11, 2009 4:32 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

OK, lest say we had a great O-Line

Are you saying LJ would do better then Charles or Savage or Battle in that situation? Why?

by vincent2668 on Oct 11, 2009 4:34 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes

Because LJ can carry the load and break tackles. On top of that LJ doesnt fumble nearly as bad as Charles or Savage. Battle still doesnt have the skillset to be a starter in this league.
LJ is a downhill runner and when hes hit he can get 2-3 yards after the hit where as savage or charles just stop right there.

by Wrestler189s on Oct 11, 2009 4:43 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Savage as never had a career fumble.

I think Charles and Savage splitting carries can average everybit of what LJ could

by vincent2668 on Oct 11, 2009 4:46 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly

everything else is just noise if the O-line isn’t even average. With an average line the Chiefs are 2-3 and maybe even 3-2 (I think they could have won the Ravens game, but that just my opinion).

by stram#1 on Oct 11, 2009 4:55 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Surely we could split carries between Savage and Charles to reduce the workload strain

I just think LJ is done. His attitude is right again, but his body has betrayed him.

by Soria's Unibrow on Oct 11, 2009 4:28 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's kind of where I'm going. And at least with Savage and Charles as

every down backs, you have the pass threat out of the back field. Plus with crappy line, you might make some people miss and you wouldn’t require line to keep holes open as long

by vincent2668 on Oct 11, 2009 4:30 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hard to judge if body is betraying him

But LJ has never been a RB who can run with a bad o-line. He makes good o-lines look great, but he doesn’t make bad o-lines look good. He’ll tear through a hole and break tackles when he’s up to full speed, but he doesn’t create running lanes on his own. That’s just not his style. So I don’t think we can say he’s finished, but at the same time, he’s a terrible fit for this team right now.

When has the front office ever spent any money in free agency? If they brought in quality players over the years then we wouldn`t be in this mess now!!! We now have so many holes to fill!! They could have used their draft picks wisely if they had filed holes in free agency.
Lets face it how many years have we known the OL was getting old and needed to be upgraded? We all knew we needed another WR to take the pressure off Bowe and it took the front office how long to realize this? This organisation is a shambles…its going to take years to rebuild….we have to many average players…other teams below average cast offs because we are desperate …I just wish this season was over..we are a joke!!

For the love of God don't forget Kendrell Bell

surely the WORST FA pickup ever! Carl’s plan seemed to show that he could one up Snyder by getting second tier FAs, pay them way too much, though not as much as guys like Snyder and Jones, and not bothering to pay attention to the draft. At least that seemed to be his MO from the late 90s until he was fired. I think most FAs are a waste. You’re much better off keeping your own guys. You pick them for spots. You don’t build your team around them.

Those teams are filling one or two missing pieces with their big free agent acquisitions. The Chiefs have too many holes to invest big bucks on a player who may help out for only a year or two.

I voted "F"

Losing 28 out of 30 games is an unbelievable achievment.

I don’t think this is all on the O-Line, its playcalling and Cassel holding on the ball too long. We know the Chiefs can’t hold blocks very long, how come Haley doesn’t? Where are the quick slants/screens needed to mask a weak line? Also, Cassel played alright but I still think he has to make quicker decisions, some of those hits he took was on himself.

That being said, a resonating image I have in my head is Goff still in a 3 point position when that dude had jumped over his head to block that fieldgoal. Unbelieveable.

I’d blame LJ, but its not his fault he has nothing in the tank, I blame those who don’t realize it and continue to run him between the tackles.

I’m sick of moral victories, I’d rather lose 60-0, than losing in OT in a game we should have won.

All the "experts" solutions on this site is "throw the slant"

Like this is Madden or something. You do enough of that and you’ll have DBs jumping routes and killing your WR or intercepting it and taking it to the house.

I'm ok with not passing all the time

With Arizona, they were trying to win right away. Here, they’re trying to build something. I just think they need to vary up the running game.

Run defense is hard to judge. It’s pretty clear Barber is not 100%. They had trouble with a fresher Choice a few times. I do think the d-line and linebackers played better though.

But the choice of players we put out there (not DJ) and putting in Washington are mistakes that they take advantage of. We stepped up in big moments with some good stops…but tackling is killing us. After this long, I think Derrick Johnson pretty much is exactly what his numbers say he is…a mediocre linebacker.

8. The Chiefs will have a bottom 10 defense this year.
9. RB will be a problem area this season on offense.

I agree

and cannot make a judgment until more of ‘their kind’ of players are added to the team…the roster/staff will likely be altered much more by next season and then we should begin to form a better view

But Haley needs to be able to get this team to gel at some point

I’ve been saying it’s too early for the last few weeks, but we played one of the lowest ranked defenses in the league today. The offense needs to start showing itself capable of getting in rhythm and playing with some consistency at some point . I think I’m more disappointed about this game because of that than I’ve been all season.

by Big Chief on Oct 11, 2009 4:57 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think part of the ineptness is the play calling.

No amount of gelling is going to get you much success from Shotgun draws.

When you have a weak line one way to deal with that is screens and draws

but I don’t really understand why you’d call draws with LJ because I think his presence in the backfield screams “run”. So while I understand the play call, I think the personnel choice makes it bad.

by Big Chief on Oct 11, 2009 5:01 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah have we ran a bubble screen this year?

I haven’t seen a single shovel pass either.

I do like the creative play calling early on, would just like to see a little more success from it.

Would like

to see the no huddle more also because the Chiefs seemed to catch a rhythm while they were running it & it keeps the defense more off-balance.

Clancy hasn't shown much

He was kind of riding on Arizona’s strong showing in the playoffs, which was mainly because Bertrand Berry got healthy and heated up.

Exactly...

Clany needs to be gone.

I'm not a Pendergast fan either

but I think it’s too early to be calling for his head. He needs to prove himself, but he’ll get the season to do it. What does scare me a little is the he’s an AZ connection. I think how Haley deals with Pendergast at the end of the season will be an important measure of where Haley is in being a good HC.

i agree...

but i do think the moment crennel is recovered from his hip surgery, we bring him in as a consultant or assistant. if clancy proves himself by seasons end great, if not we have crennel there to take over at seasons end. it would also give him a jump on evaluating the players he will inherit.

Yeah

unless the D shows progress and the O doesn’t. I think Haley needs to at least show that he can at least figure out a way to play the hand he’s dealt. Especially since you have very beatable teams on our schedule – Raiders again, Bills, Browns. No excuse for going 0-16.

by Big Chief on Oct 11, 2009 4:49 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I dont think theres anyway that Haley doesnt get two years.

He’s a rookie HC working iwth very little talent in an evaluation year and the guy upstairs who decides the HC knows it too.

Idk

0-16 has only happened once…..
we already set a record last year with a couple sacks

won't go winless

but even if we did Haley will remain

I agree with the first part

I think this team will win some games. But if they don’t I think it will be difficult for Pioli to keep Haley.

The only way Haley wont be back...

is if Cowher is brought in.

1-15 could also change that…think cam cameron and miami. just like TH, a good if not great OC but cam couldnt cut it as a HC.

Summary

First of all… I haven’t been this angry and upset in a very long time. So with that, I need to do something to let it out:

LJ IS slow: O-line or not there are plenty of guys who, when the middle is jammed up, can jump out to the side and flash run it up the field for yardage. On that note, why not give Charles more carries? LJ…sigh…there’s no excitement in you anymore and I’m starting to feel like you are cancer to this team.

O-line: Holy geez, may I use the quote… “that’s my quarterback! – T.O.” … protect him like he’s your Daddy’s baby! …(or your brother in this case). When it’s overtime, you have one job to do, and your team..excuse me…“family” is 0-4 you HAVE GOT to ask yourself “How bad do WE want it?!?” Push like you’ve never pushed before guys…

Leggett: Pardon the interruption but lets not forget what great things have come out of Leggett in the past two years…I immediately jump to special teams and fumble recoveries (sorry I am not good enough to bring up the stats). On this note though I agree with most in that I am completely outraged with the tackling by Leggett but I kept asking myself ….WHY …WHY IN THE WORLD would Leggett repeatedly cover Austin when he was continually getting beat…and beat bad. Why is someone like Flowers who has proved himself time and time again NOT covering him?!

Haley and the team..“family”:
Let’s face it there is not much more time to pick up some really quality proven people for the team and all this swapping out of people is really stressing me out. My point, allow some real time for this team to bond and feel some unity and get some chemistry goin’ and things WILL pick up for us… i believe this!

Sorry if this was too long of a comment with respect to the rules but thank you for letting me do this! I already feel better… Go Chiefs

It's not the Chiefs, it's Brandon Carr's tackling

let’s be real, carr’s tackling is the main reason of Austin’s huge plays.
Great offense by the chiefs, the secondary really needs some help and also it woldn’t hurt to start our best defensive player on our team, Derrick Johnson.

And also the weak play on third down and Legget's tackling.

Unless the ball is going to Jamaal Charles, with our offensive line, you can not throw flats on 3rd down also only the running back should be running a route that does not end past the first down mark. All WR’s and TE’s should run routes past the first down line
