Arrowheadlines: Chiefs News 10/11

Good Morning! This is the holy crap I drank a lot of beer last night Gameday Edition! The Game That Never Was. Let's get a win.
The Texans and Cowboys competed for the hearts and minds of football fans in Dallas for three years. They shared a playground known as the Cotton Bowl and hustled about the Dallas-Ft. Worth metroplex trying to sell tickets and attraction attention with special promotions and half-time extravaganzas that featured everything from Roy Rogers to bathing beauties. The Texans were a football success, a championship team in that time, while the Cowboys struggled to win games at the start. Neither team was able to establish a solid financial foothold as the head-to-head competition split the ticket buying public in half. The Battle For Dallas from Bob Gretz
The Chiefs don’t have it that bad, but they are approaching another of Tampa Bay’s dubious milestones. Kansas City has won two games since October 2007, and if the Chiefs lose today to the Dallas Cowboys, they will have done what the expansion Bucs did years ago: lose 28 of 30 games.
"Kind of puts your resolve and character to the test," says Hall of Fame defensive end Lee Roy Selmon, a rookie for the winless 1976 Bucs. "Each one of us, we had to make a decision: Are we going to throw in the towel?"

Bottom line
The Chiefs simply weren’t talented enough to compete with either of their last two opponents, the Eagles and Giants. While the Cowboys also have more ability than the Chiefs, Dallas has enough issues to allow Kansas City to stay close. But the Chiefs have shown no indication they can take advantage of an opponent’s weakness. They have made no progress in any particular area since the start of the season, so there’s no reason to think they can beat the skilled, if flawed, Cowboys. Prediction: Cowboys 28, Chiefs 17.
Scouting report | Dallas at Kansas City from KC Star
The Chiefs set AFL records by fumbling 10 times during a rainy home opener, but they still defeated the Houston Oilers 24-0 in front of a drenched 45,805 at Municipal Stadium.
The two teams combined for a league-record 14 fumbles, and the Oilers recovered a record six. But Houston, unlike the Chiefs, failed to capitalize on any of the turnovers.

In advance of his return to Arrowhead, Priest and I shared a table for 15 minutes Friday at the Kansas City Power & Light District. He discussed the Priest Holmes Foundation, how he thinks he would react if he played for Chiefs coach Todd Haley, the Chiefs’ fall from NFL relevance in the time since Holmes retired, and the fact that Larry Johnson is approaching that team rushing record.
Wearing a pinstriped suit and drinking hot tea, here’s the condensed version of what Priest had to say:
Red Zone exclusive: Q&A with former Chiefs RB Priest Holmes from The Red Zone
The Kansas City Chiefs have kicked the tires on some nose tackles in a recent workout.
The club put veteran William Joseph, Tim Anderson and Marlon Favorite through tryouts, a league source said.
First-year head coach Todd Haley has made it clear he is not done working over the roster, and the Chiefs have been as active as just about any team in exploring player additions.
Biggs: Chiefs work out three nose tackles from National Football Post
Being an undrafted NFL rookie free agent last year, Mike Cox did everything to get noticed.
He put in extra work at minicamp and training camp because he wanted to impress upon the Kansas City Chiefs that they had an old-school football player on their hands.
Evidently, he got his point across.
"I did everything I could to catch the coach’s eye," Cox said. "The one thing you can’t do is get hurt. I put in the time after practice last year. ... I worked hard and showed them that I was a hard-nosed football player who loved to hit and block."

Once the smoke cleared, the Texans were on the Chisholm Trail to Kansas City and the Cowboys were hunkered down in the Cotton Bowl, folks were left wondering about the greatest game that was never played.
Some still do. Fifty years after making their debuts in Big D, the storied franchises meet today at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.
"This game will bring back warm memories for me," said Abner Haynes, 72, who played every game for the Texans and two seasons with the Chiefs. "We would love to have played them, and they always wanted to play us."
As a tribute to AFL founder Lamar Hunt, who died in December 2006, the Chiefs will wear Texans uniforms for the first time since the 1962 AFL Championship Game. The Cowboys will be decked in their expansion duds today.
Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Texans Once Battled Each Other to Gain Fans, Respect from The Dallas Morning News
“The crowd is great,” [Wade] Phillips said. “The Chiefs have a good feeling about playing at home. They've been conditioned to play well at home. The Air Force (jets) flying over, (the fans) singing the national anthem, changing the words at the end to ‘Home of the Chiefs' instead of the brave. If you haven't been there, you don't know they're going to say that. They've changed our national anthem. It's something pretty different.”
It's against that crazed sea-of-red backdrop that the Cowboys will try to bounce back at noon today from last week's excruciating 17-10 loss to Denver and avoid losing in consecutive weeks on the road for the first time since Oct. 12 (at Arizona) and Oct. 19 (at St. Louis) last season.
Cowboys wary of Chiefs from The Houston Chronicle
The Cowboys' Ivy League-educated offensive coordinator, who just happens to be the NFL's highest-paid assistant coach at $3 million per season, crossed the fine line between confidence and arrogance last week against Denver.
This offense can't afford for Jason Garrett to do it again – even against the raggedy Kansas City Chiefs.
Garrett, once upon a time the unquestioned heir to Wade Phillips' job, has little margin for error.
Dallas Cowboys' Garrett Needs a New Game Plan from The Dallas Morning News
Mark Bradley followed his father’s footsteps to the University of Oklahoma, where he played for three seasons as a wide receiver. He was a second-round draft pick by Chicago in 2005 and was signed by Kansas City in 2008 after three years with the Bears......Both the Chiefs and the Cowboys will wear throwback uniforms today. Do players like to change their game-day look once in a while?
I think so. The ones we’ll be wearing will be the ones they wore when the team was in Texas. The helmets look pretty cool, but the rest of the uniform isn’t much different than what we wear every week. It’s just the helmets and the black shoes that are different.

and about that strike-thru text …
Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisiton!
My favorite quote ....
"Even with all the changes, with Scott Pioli, who is the new GM, and of course the new coach, in Haley – I think that he’s a no-nonsense guy. He’s basically said that it’s my way or the highway. And I think what that’s going to create is, it’s going to create opportunities of unity for the players, even though they might not like it. It’s going to hurt. I heard about the weight shedding, the shedding of the weight on the offensive line. All these things, basically I believe have been tactically done that, even though they didn’t get him the wins early on and the Chiefs being 0-4, but what it will do is that it will gain that respect, and they will understand that, in order to win and be successful, they’ll have to do it my way."
