Examining the Dallas Cowboys Play Calling

We've got a reference post for you today for tomorrow's game against the Dallas Cowboys.

Here's what the Cowboys have been calling by down and how they've been doing with those play calls.

I'll add a bit of analysis then I'm laying down for a nap. I'm in the wonderful drowsy, Saturday afternoon state of mind right now. Probably put on some college football and nap for a bit.

First Down

66 rushing plays (5.79 average yards per rush), 52 passing plays (8.5 average yards per passing play)

The Cowboys have a surprising 18 first down rushing the ball on first down. The Chiefs? Only 8 first downs rushing the ball on first down. The Cowboys also have 16 passing first downs on first down.

Rush: 56%

Pass: 44%

Second Down

29 rushing plays (7.83 average yards per rush), 52 passing plays (6.02 average yards per passing play)

Not a whole lot of info to glean from second down, which is the case for most NFL team. The Cowboys have 13 rushing first downs and 14 passing first downs on second down.

Rush: 36%

Pass: 64%

Third Down

11 rushing plays (2.82 average yards per rush), 37 passing plays (4.51 average yards per passing play)

7 rushing first downs and 10 passing first downs give the Cowboys a 35% 3rd down conversation rate. Which is around the league average and more than double the rate the Chiefs convert third downs.

Rush: 23%

Pass: 77%

Fourth Down

0 rushing plays (0 average yards per rush), 2 passing plays (26.5 average yards per passing play)

The Cowboys haven't had to go for it on as many fourth downs as the Chiefs. They did complete a 53-yard pass on fourth down though, giving them a nice passing average.

Keep an eye on these numbers during the game tomorrow to hopefully get a better sense of what the Cowboys are going to call.

Okay, I'm off to nap. Joel said he's got some stuff coming up for you today so check back.
