The Kansas City Chiefs announced on Thursday that the club has agreed to terms of a two-year Reserve/Future Free Agent contract with TE/FB Jed Collins. As per club policy, no further terms of the agreement were announced.
Collins (6-1, 249) originally entered the NFL as a rookie free agent with Philadelphia in 2008. He attended training camp with the Eagles, but was released prior to the start of the regular season and added to the practice squad. Collins also spent a portion of the 2008 campaign on Chicago’s practice squad. He spent Weeks 13 and 14 on Cleveland’s active roster, but was inactive for one contest and did not play in the other. He concluded the 2008 season as a member of the Browns practice squad.

Tight end AND fullback
This guy is already the most “versatile” player on the roster now that Kris Wilson is gone.

Philly?
So the Eagles cut Collins so they could sign Kris Wilson……only to find out what we knew and cut him weeks later? BTW, is Wilson still on the Chargers active roster?
by KansasCityShuffle on Jan 8, 2009 4:24 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Yes
apparently, Wilson IS still with the Chargers. Bennett too

Thanks
but no thanks. You can keep your Philly fullbacks

Why so down on him?
Did you not hear about his versatility? :)

If he couldn't beat out a DT (Klecko) for a starting gig
I don’t want him

Yeah he might be the next Tony.
Richardson or Gonzalez. LOL

More info on Collins
Per the Eagles blog on NJ.com:
Positives: Rare size for the fullback position. Short, stocky build that looks the part. … Reliable receiver who has the route-running and soft hands to be quite effective out of the backfield. … Developing blocker who displayed more physicality and toughness as a senior. … Effective short-yardage runner. … Attacks the line of scrimmage and runs with good forward lean.
Negatives: Will be making the transition to fullback after spending his entire WSU career at tight end. … Not a natural ball-carrier. … Lacks elusiveness and has only marginal speed for the position. … Still developing as a blocker and hasn’t always been as tough or physical as his size would indicate. … Will face up as a blocker, but doesn’t generate consistent movement.

give the guy a chance
You never know the guy could be a pretty good player another weapon

The jokes are directed more at Kris Wilson
Than Collins. Ah, the “versatile” Kris Wilson….

If only he would have panned out
and been as good as they thought he would be. We could of had the best TE tandem in the game. All well, he’s still on my Madden roster…

He has to offer something.

Is this Ray Farmer at work?
We need a future defensive leader, his name is James Laurinaitis and he can be selected in round 1 of the upcoming Draft.

confused
so exactly why are we signing players when we don’t have a GM. aren’t we potentially tieing ourselves up with players that the new regime might not want. Didn’t we fire Carl and his staff for a reason???

That’s what I was thinking. Who is the one making these hiring decisions right now??
by augmental on Jan 8, 2009 4:49 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
He's a practice squad guy at best
Nothing will come of his signing. He may not even be on the team in a couple of months.

farmer
I dont know if i believe in farmer I give him credit for the job he did today but I wish we would have pulled for some free agents last year escpecially asante samuel, fanica ,and plenty more we missed out on it seems we are always last in on the bargains and one share the same opinion?
by sexassassin on Jan 8, 2009 4:42 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Samuel? Fanica? On this team?
Nah, don’t want them and I’m glad we didn’t sign them.

What about Cox
Don’t we already have a fullback? And we have like three TEs other than Tony G, so what role is the guy supposed to fill?

Why is Herm still able to sign these cast-offs?
If Andy Reid could not make a player out of him, what makes Herm think he can? Should rephrase, why is Herm able to sign anybody?
Lets hope Clark lets the new GM start fresh, with his guys. Who would want a coach, who has lost twice as many as he has won in KC?
by Eric Allen on Jan 8, 2009 5:29 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
These low level signings
mean nothing really. I wouldn’t put much stock in Collins’ signing. We did the same thing last year.

samuel or fanica ??
are you kidding me you wouldent take those guys ? I do recall we lost a pretty big game against the chargers to a blown play by pat surtain , who was hurt all season if samuel is on our team who is a baller who is making a huge difference in some of the eagles big wins this season .With him and flowers in there wow we would be shut down. And there is a reason why we cannot run the ball well the name rudy ring a bell he is a rookie in there and way to tall with experience snapping the ball fanica waters albert wow pretty solid

For a combined $100 million??
No thank you. I’ll take our corners at a much discounted rate.
And Faneca’s deal was the highest ever for a guard. I don’t want to be the team to give out the largest contracts in NFL history.
by Joel Thorman on Jan 8, 2009 6:13 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I find it really strange that we would sign a fullback
at all if we are supposedly a spread team? Not sure why Herm would bother? Especially if he thought he was gone?
by TheQ on Jan 8, 2009 6:27 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
sounds like he is more TE than FB
and Chan loves his 2-TE sets

Good point.
I guess I would go about business as usual if no had fired me yet too. We really need to get a GM.

contracts
I can agree right now with faneca deal was way to much but then again larry would be running all over people we wouldent be in this situation and the corners well hey the would be shut down . I think at some point you have to sprinkle in some vets to help everyone out im just shocked how everyone is hitting the new comers hard cause they dont know who he is i can tell you right now if we announced that samuel was coming in we would be going nuts right now I would the guy is a champ and he has been there done that spend money get serious . Hopefully our new gm who ever it is he will be aggressive and get guys in here.

I like the signing
I’m glad to see the coaches and scouts still active and attempting to acquire all the quality available. It doesn’t matter now that our season is over and some of these guys may end up being contributers. Collins can compete with the guys we have and let the best backup win. I don’t think he is being looked at to really replace anyone, but as a player that has an upside that we may be able to use.
Pioli and whomever is the coach next year will do their jobs and evaluate what we have on the roster, retain the best and get some more to compete. That is how it is done. It doesn’t hurt us financially, so I’m just glad to see new possibilities.
