Top 5 QBs of the past
There has been an ongoing debate about whether or not to draft a QB with our first pick. I was kind of curious as to how successful this trend is. Almost every year a QB is taken top 5. Some are thrust into the lineup on day one, and some are backups for a year or two. Here is a list of the top 5 QBS of the past.
You decide if we should use our 3rd pick on Bradford, Stafford, or a more pressing need.
The Manning, Mcnabb , and Matt Ryan have worked out top 5. How many haven't though?
2008-Matt Ryan 3rd pick. so far so good
2007-JeMarcus Russel 1st pick. Not good at all
2006-Vince Young 3rd pick. I think I saw him on the back of a milk carton
2005-Alex Smith 1st pick. Isn't he like 3rd string now
2004-Eli Manning 1st pick. Won a superbowl
Phillip Rivers 4th pick. Despite my hate for him, he is pretty good. Would still rather have Brees
2003-Carson Palmer 1st pick. Can he stay healthy?
2002-David Carr 1st pick. I think I saw him on that show Where Are They Now
Joey Harrington 3rd pick. He still around somewhere.
2001-Mike Vick 1st pick. Was a star and now takes it in the star in Leavenworth.
2000-No QB top 5. Pennington was the first QB taken at 18
1999-Tim Couch 1st pick. No comment. McNabb 2nd pick. Has lived up to his billing. Akili Smith 3rd pick??????
1998-Peyton Manning 1st pick. First ballot HOF! Ryan Leaf 2nd pick. First ballot HOF douche bag.
1997-No top 5. First and only first round QB. Drum role please.....Jim Druckenmiller at 26.
1996-No QB in the first round? Tony Banks was the first QB selected at 42nd.
1995-Steve "Air" McNair 3rd pick. He will be in he HOF.
1994-Heath Shuler 3rd pick. Another great Florida QB.
1993-Drew Bledsoe 1st pick. Possibly HOF at the very least he was solid until his injury. Rick Mirer 2nd pick. The next Joe Montana LOL.
1992-NO top 5. Klingler was picked 6th. Ouch!
1991-No top 5. Dan McGwire was 16th. I wonder if he is in hiding with Mark?
1990-The infamous Jeff George 1st pick. A world of talent. Just couldn't get along with coaches.
1989-Troy Aikman 1st pick. Some people thought he was a mistake after the first year. Boy were they wrong about this HOF. Great draft in the top 5 that year minus Tony Mandrich at 2nd. 3rd was Barry Sanders. 4th DT baby! 5th was Neon Deon.
1988-No top 5. Chris Chandler was taken 76th. Not to bad in the late round.
1987-Vinny Testevarde 1st pick. Was a solid QB but not worth a number one.
1986-Jim Everett 3rd pick. "OK Chris" LOL
1985-No top 5. Bernie Kosar was picked at the end of the 1st with a supplemental pick.
1984-No top 5. Boomer was taken 38. That turned out to be a good second rounder.
1983-Elway 1st pick. I would say that turned out alright. :) We took Todd freaking Blackledge with the 7th pick.
1982-Art Schlicter 4th pick. Who?
1981-No top 5. Rich Campbell was the 6th pick.
1980-No top 5. Marc Wilson was the 16th pick.
I would say that is far enough back. Hind sight is definately 20/20. You decide if it is worth a 3rd pick in this draft for a QB. To me it looks very similar to 2002 with Carr and Harrington. That is always up for debate. I think I learned more about other players that I had know idea. I feel stupid in not knowing that Bo Jackson was actually drafted by the Bucs #1 in 86. Fun stuff.

LOL. Look for a strong comeback from Vick IMO.

JaMarcus Russel
will be good. Just not forseeably with the Raiders….
We need to draft an OL, preferably Oher. The reason being they are a lot less gambles than QB’s in the 1st round.

Oher wouldn’t be a bad pick at all. Anyone who hasnt read The Blind side should read it immediately.

DEFENSE!
We CAN NOT wast our pick with a QB! They’re just too risky (I mean what is that, like a 5% success rate?)

Stafford lookd amazing the 2nd half of his bowl game but just horrible the first half. If bradford is there at 3 hell yeah get him he’s just looked good about all the time. If not there i’d like to see either Andre Smith or Michael Ohre. But if not them trade that to mid round and get Brian Orakpo

Not to pee in anyone's Cheerios
I don’t think McNair makes the HOF. I don’t think Bledsoe does either.
NFLN just did a “Top 10 Draft Busts” recently that had a few of these fellas in there. I totally spaced on this, but I didn’t realize that Mandarich came back and played G at Indy for several years, and quite well. He was there with Peyton for a few years. He was just a total bust as a 1st round, roided out RT.
I don’t know where we’ll go at #3, but I guarantee you this… whatever we take we will have a need for it. Whether that pick can step up and fill that need like we want is another question.

McNair is not a HOFer
And Heath Shuler went to Tennessee
As for Bo, I just wrote up a bio on him at Royals Review. He was taken #1 by the Bucs, but when they flew him in to Tampa for a visit, it violated his NCAA eligiblity for baseball which pissed him off. He also didn’t like they were losers, so he demanded a trade or said he’d play baseball. They tried to trade him to the 49ers, but it fell through, and they tried to offer him a record amount of money for a rookie. Many thought Bo was making an empty threat to play baseball, but when the Royals took him, Bo was impressed with their winning organization and decided to ride the buses in the minors rather than play football.
When the Raiders took him in the 7th round the next year, they told Bo he could play baseball and just play football when baseball was over. Bo agreed and history was made.

My bad on Shuler
I new that and for some reason Florida was on my mind. I have some good Bo memories from my childhood.
A funny one was when a shot was hit to left and he ran back to the wal,l jumped to make the catch and he missed it. We were setting in the gold seats and could see a replay inside, and the ball hit about a foot below his feet. Just a funny memory to go with all the great ones.

Bo
Damn shame the Chiefs didn’t draft Bo with a 6th round pick. He could’ve played for both KC teams at once, instead of being a dirty Raider.

Great write up on Bo
I check out RR almost as often as AP, really enjoy reading your countdown. Keep up the good work!

In fairness
We should also run a similar analysis for offensive lineman and defensive linemen. I bet there are a fair number of busts there too.

Nah
O-line is a pretty low bust-rate actually. I once looked at all 1st round QBs from 1995-2005 and it’s about a 50% rate.

That may be
Without a comparison, this list though doesn’t tell us much.

Still would like to see it
I think O-Line is a pretty safe bet, but I’d be interesting to do a write-up like this for the main positions the Chiefs are looking at with their pick (O-line, QB, DE, how often does a LB go in the top 5?)

+1 on Vick taking it in the star...wow, you just made my day.

Micheal Vick used to make millions
and spend his afternoons crouched over the center’s ass, now he makes 12 cents per hour at Leavenworth and he spends his afternoons with, uh, you guessed it………………
