Chris Mortensen on the NFL GM & Head Coach Vancancies
Nice little clip to watch from this afternoon. Mortensen mentions that he did a bit of digging and found the rumor that Pioli was making extreme demands to be false.
Can we please hire a GM? I'm dying over here.

"Kansas City Bound"
PLEASE!!!! Don’t go back to NE, Scott. We will build statues in your honor if only you’ll come over here…. and someone tell Clark to let him wear the President of Football Operations title too. Whatever it takes.

Good find
Looks like he’s ours if we can seal the deal. Come on Clark!!!

I knew it, I Knew it!
Mortenson must have been reading the blogs here at AP. I just said that yesterday. In the Is it really gonna happen? thread.
I’m also beginning to believe that the "wants to control all aspects" thing being reported was planted in the press to scare other teams, namely the Chiefs away from Pioli.
Yeah me! Yes I know guys, I need to get out more and need more friends.

I would hope he'd want his own team to build.
I’m sure he has a good gig in New England, but, you’d think he’d want to run his own show, and not play Will Riker to Belichick’s Captain Picard (sorry for the sci-fi reference).
If he’s that content as a #2 I’m not sure we want him. The people who really make it big aren’t afraid to take risks. KC has a young team and the fans are clamoring to be a relevant franchise again. He could be a football hero in KC. He could make Arrowhead sizzle the way it did 15 years ago.
If he stays in New England, at some point the phone is going to stop ringing. It’s time to leave the nest Scott.

Of Course
Riker never left Enterprise…he decided that despite his ambition to have his own command he was happy there and that Enterprise was the only ship he was interested in commanding. :)
I think Pioli would be a great hire, but if he’s not interested in coming here then we can find great hires elsewhere. Pioli’s just the most exciting because he’s the biggest name we all happen to know. Doesn’t mean that he’s the only one who could do a great job here.

Dude...
…you’re close to having the plethora of useless knowledge as I have. You are incorrect about Riker. When Picard was in the episode where he was an old man and trying to get his former staff convinced that there was a problem with the time space continuum Riker was an Admiral in charge of his own ship. Leslie Crusher was Picard’s ex-wife as well as Captain of her own medical ship as well as Worf and Riker having a falling out after Troi married Worf and had long since died.
Get your facts straight :)
Bill Parcell’s: "You are what your record says you are."
Thigpen WILL NOT be the Chiefs starting QB next year IMO. He can compete for the job and should be 2nd or 3rd string.

That Doesn't Count
It was an alternate reality…the actual reality had Riker staying on Enterprise.
Unless of course he left in one of their last movies. Got to admit that I didn’t really pay attention to any of the Star Trek films after “First Contact” (because they sucked). Although I did love “Star Trek: Enterprise”.

So NOW you're making up the rules?
I call foul…you retart ;)

I ate up
Mortensen’s comments that the interview went “really well” and Pioli is either “KC bound or back to NE.” I am crossing my fingers hoping that we hear something from Clark Hunt in the next few days.

Peterson's Revenge
I think Peterson’s asked one favor of Clark Hunt and that was to wait as long as possible before he let out who he was hiring as GM.
by Aejfan on Jan 7, 2009 4:22 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Doubtful
Nothing Peterson said at his press conference really changed my impression that Peterson’s departure wasn’t his idea…the guy said he wasn’t interested in retiring and he got up on a soapbox about the press. Those are the actions of someone who’s pissed off that he got fired. And people who get fired generally don’t get a lot of influence in the hiring process for their replacement.
If Hunt’s holding off on releasing info about the new GM it’s because that’s what he needs to do to hire the guy…about the only courtesy he owed Peterson was not making that the focus of Peterson’s send-off.

Well as UCrawford has pointed out with Carl
the first 9 years were good, but things started to teeter off after that until D-Year (D-Day extended). Pioli may want to consider that before deciding to stay put in NE.
We need a future defensive leader, his name is James Laurinaitis and he can be selected in round 1 of the upcoming Draft.

It Happens To All GMs And Coaches Eventually
At some point the game passes everyone by. The rest of the league figures you out and adapts to what you do, or they come up with something you can’t adapt to, and you get left behind. That’s why that saying about how marriages in the NFL shouldn’t last more than 10 years is so often true…even the best coaches are lucky to last that long. Same with the GMs.

And Nine Good Years Is A Pretty Good Track Record
If it hadn’t been for the 11 years Carl overstayed, we’d all be talking about him a lot more fondly.

reguardless of who Clark decides on
Peterson will probably take credit for it, just like he said it was his idea to split up the GM / President positions.

I wonder if Pioli is
getting council from his father-in-law, Bill Parcells in the negotiations. Parcells is quite the contract guru.

pioli
THIS SHOULD BE A NO BRAINER FOR ANY NEW GM .FIRST OFF WE HAVE THE BIGGEST LOYAL FAN BASE IN THE NFL HE WOULD BE WELCOMED WITH OPEN ARMS. WE HAVE THE YOUTH OUR TEAM IS YOUNG ANG HUNGRY AND MOST OF OUR DRAFT PICKS SO FAR HAVE PLAYED PRETTY WELL SO THE STEPS ARE ALREADY IN PLACE. WE HAVE THE MOST CAP SPACE IN THE NFL SO THE NEW GM CAN GO GET YOUNG FREE AGENTS OF HIS DESIRE . AND THE OWNERS HAVE BEEN IN THE NFL FOR A VERY LONG TIME . AND TO EVEN TOP IT OFF WE HAVE A TOP PICK IN THIS YEARS DRAFT WHICH WOULD GIVE HIM INSTANT RESULTS AS MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE ORGANIZATION . AND IF THAT DOESNT SELL HIM WE ARE IN A DIVISION THAT HAS AN 8-8 TEAM GOING TO THE PLAYOFFS HOW CAN YOU SAY NO TO THAT . CHARGERS ARE ON THE DECLINE ,RAIDERS ARE RAIDERS AND BRONCOS ARE IN THE SAME BOAT BUT THEY HAVE AN OWNER THAT LOOKS LIKE A DEER IN HEADLIGHTS WHEN ASKED WHAT YOU GOING TO DO NEXT? DENVER IS DONE . SO PIOLI COME TO THE CHIEFS CLARK MAKE IT HAPPEN CHIEFS CAN BE A SUPER BOWL CHAMP.

And again
It’s like BHGP’s Joe Paterno is commenting on the Chiefs situation on the AP boards – except, you know, without the whole humor part.

I originally came up with the idea for the JoePa chronicles.
Although I could never come up with material as funny as OPS.

Yes
Hello Chiefs fans. I’m new to the site and look forward to working through this long process. Here is the deal. This guy will have full control and I know this, but I’m more interested in how quickly the coach will be hired and the assistants! Looks like McDaniels is the front runner when Pioli gets the job, but I would really keep an eye out for possible Shanahan
by ColoradoChief on Jan 7, 2009 8:42 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Welcome CC
McDaniels, Ferentz, unnamed coach….they’re all candidates at this point (assuming Herm is gone).
Don’t see Shanahan coming here (especially after his former boss and current friend Pat Bowlen said he wouldn’t be down with that).
