Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

VIDEO: Carl Peterson Final Press Conference

"You've heard many of our coaches, past and present, say they don't read the newspapers or listen to the talk radio or watch the TV news. Well, I did. I did read much of what you wrote in the media and much of what you said. I thought it was my job to know. To know what our fans were hearing and yes what they were reading. Obviously, I didn't always agree with what was being written or said. And I was always amazed at the inaccuracies and inconsistencies."

Q&A with the media here.

He said

He had a reason for asking for all 3 titles (Pres/CEO/GM) but over the last 20 years it has gotten to be too much to ask one person to wear both hats.

inaccuracies and inconsistencies

AP is never wrong. At least that is what Primetime told me….

by TheQ on Jan 6, 2009 6:08 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Never "wrong"

in the Bill Clinton sense of the word.

I am confused...

So Carl did have “sex” with that woman?

by TheQ on Jan 6, 2009 6:13 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Well...

he “did not have sexual relations” with his own cigar.

Still Watching It

I guess it was predictable that Peterson would use his going-away ceremony to take shots at the press for ripping on him. Too bad he didn’t realize that the primary reason that happened was because he failed to deliver results and failed to learn from his mistakes.

The press tends to be a little harsher on those who don’t deliver championships than those who do. If that’s such an annoyance to Peterson then he’s not very well-suited to the profession of NFL general manager.

Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

Still watching it too

He likes to talk doesn’t he? :)

Nothing Wrong With Being A Talker

Biggest problem I had with the man was his inability to confront and compensate for his shortcomings. When something didn’t work for him, he just kept making the same mistakes over and over again and seemed to live in denial of there being a problem.

I do respect his work in the charitable community and I realize he did a lot of good things on the business side of the house for the Chiefs, which I do respect. But ultimately he was the one who chose to stay on as the GM for 20 years and he didn’t deliver for the fans for the last 15 of those.

The first time AP was ever interviewed by the KC Star

I asked the reporter how he found out about AP.

He said he asked around the Chiefs’ front office who would be the blog to interview and the word from the front office was interview AP.

So I’m sure Carl Peterson has read at least a couple posts on here.

by Chris on Jan 6, 2009 6:11 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah

I suspect a few players do as well. Or front office guys who might be googling their name.

I thought it was interesting in the beginning of Carl's speech

where he said “I’m not retiring.” considering the rumors of him going to Miami that have surfaced.

"In the NFL, coaching has to make a difference when the games are close. The talent level across the league from team to team is too similar. Great head coaches do their best work in the fourth quarter when the game is on the line. Instead, we’ve seen Herm blow timeouts, put the game in the hands of the league’s worst defense, and most recently, run Larry Johnson behind Wade Smith and Adrian Jones as if they were Tim Grunhard and Will Shields in their prime.
Dr. Frankenstein is gone, but his monster is still roaming the sideline at Arrowhead Stadium." -C.E. Wendler, Warpaint Illustrated

He also called those rumors

“Pure speculation” in a Q&A session.

Haven't made it that far in

yet. But that’s what Herm said in NY too before being “traded” here.

Exactly.

Smoke, mirrors, and secrecy have been Carls MO for quite awhile.

Carl being Carl.

It’s not just speculation when you are on the Miami sideline wearing a Dolphin lapel pin with your former owner. That is what is known as a responsible question.

Carl's Carl

Can’t change who he is and I didn’t have a problem with him being an asshole until it apparently kept him from being able to build the best possible football team. If he was winning playoff games and making runs at a Super Bowl he could have been as much of an asshole as he wanted as far as I’m concerned.

I don't feel much bad blood for him

and wish him luck with whatever he does next. It was past time to leave, and I can’t say I blame him for staying so long to try and win the big one, it happens to many players in the league. He did good things here, and I won’t forget those.

Yup

That’s on Lamar Hunt for not getting rid of him after his third head coach couldn’t deliver…at the latest. There was no good reason for letting him hire his fourth coach…he should have left with Vermeil. Heck, there’s an argument to be made that he should have left with Gunther.

Yeah But

He did talk about having 3 13-3 get bounced in the divisional round. It’s not like he’s ignoring it.

Besides, this really isn’t the place for him to be talking about anything other than good memories and saying thank you.

He's Talking About George Brett Visiting On The Sidelines

And how the Chiefs got fined every time (which Carl was happy to pay). That story actually made me chuckle a little….it was nice.

Of course, I also didn’t hear him mention Bob Gretz….which kind of surprised me.

He’s the guy in the national press who can help get Peterson’s name out there. :)

Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

by UCrawford on Jan 6, 2009 6:47 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Bottom Line

He actually cared about the team and did his best. You can’t ask for more than that from a guy. It was time to go for him, but I do think he did try hard. I think that he just wasn’t able to bring us what we needed….the Super Bowl, and he couldn’t get it done in the capacity he was placed into. I wish him well in the future, but am glad that we are moving on as well.

by TXChiefan on Jan 6, 2009 6:56 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Agreed on all accounts

I do believe he did his best and wanted the best for the Hunt family. But also agreed that we’re both moving on. Both parties needed a fresh start.

by primetime 07 on Jan 6, 2009 6:58 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I Don't Have Any Doubt That He Wanted To Win

The problem I had with him is that when it became pretty clear what the biggest weakness of his reign was (player evaluation) he never gave up the GM role let someone else do the work and he kept the same people around who’d screwed up previous drafts.

He wanted to win…most people do. He just wasn’t willing to take the steps necessary to win if it meant giving up any of his power or firing any of his buddies.

Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

by UCrawford on Jan 6, 2009 6:59 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Except For Gunther, Of Course

And Gunther certainly wasn’t doing much as a head coach…but then he wasn’t doing much as a defensive coordinator during this stint (especially this year) and yet Peterson kept him around too.

There’s a time and a place to make friendship a priority and a time and a place to make results a priority. And Peterson didn’t make results a priority often enough.

Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

by UCrawford on Jan 6, 2009 7:02 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I know the blame ultimately falls on Carl

But he did give the head coach full control over his staff.

by primetime 07 on Jan 6, 2009 7:04 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Sure

Because most of the head coaches were his buddies. He should have pushed Vermeil to fire Greg Robinson long before he did…but he didn’t want to make Vermeil unhappy so he didn’t. He should have pushed Herm to get rid of Priefer before this year because ST has been a suckhole…but he didn’t. He should have been at least interviewing other candidates for the head coaching job rather than trading for a guy with a losing record and handing the job to him without talking to anyone else…but he didn’t, and so we basically drafted Herm Edwards because he was a buddy of Carl’s.

He didn’t make results enough of a priority…that’s why the Chiefs didn’t win playoff games for the last 15 years and why he’s gone now.

Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

by UCrawford on Jan 6, 2009 7:09 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Like Parcells Said

You are what your record says you are. And Peterson’s record says that he was a GM who didn’t make the decisions necessary to build great teams.

Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

by UCrawford on Jan 6, 2009 7:11 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Agreed

I am all about loyalty, but loyalty to the organization must override friendships. I respect the efforts given, but somebody (can’t say if it was Herm, Gunther, or who) really must pay the price for the utter failure of the defense….and the O-Line……and the QB situation…..and the…..etc.

Each has tried, but it isn’t worth the destruction of the team. We started going the right direction by going young, and it was worth it to me to suffer through this year. Now it is so much more exciting to see that the entire organization is doing the same.

by TXChiefan on Jan 6, 2009 7:10 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I Think There Are Building Blocks There

And I think that a good head coach will get results out of them. I wasn’t trying to be overly optimistic when I said I could see nine wins next season…I honestly think this team could win nine games with some better leadership.

Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

by UCrawford on Jan 6, 2009 7:14 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I don't think you are off

The foundation is solid and shows great prospects. With a good FA session, our #3 pick, and the state of the rest of our division, we can win 9 and we can win the division. That puts us in the Playoffs with an even record and the opportunity to pull a Giants run like last year.

by TXChiefan on Jan 6, 2009 7:20 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yup

That’s one of the things that irritated me about Herm and Carl’s “rebuilding” effort…rebuilding doesn’t take four or five years and there aren’t any years where you can just tank your season. The league is designed for teams to make quick turnarounds and, like Posnanski said, a rebuilding effort that takes a long time is simply a rebuilding effort that isn’t working.

Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

by UCrawford on Jan 6, 2009 7:24 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah but, if you look at the Dolphins their built for a few good years then back to develop their young guys.

Only their O-line averages 25 years of age, but their starting defense is getting OLD!

Ferguson (DE) will be 35 next year,
Holliday (DE) 34
Porter (OLB) 32
Goodman (CB) 31
Bell (SS) 31
Hill (FS) 31
and Pennington (QB) will be 33

That’s 7 elderly guys out of the starting 22, and thats hoping that Henne does develop as their QBTF. Otherwise their gonna be back where they started….struggling like us.

Herm does deserve to get canned his record regardless of the circumstances that he had to endure, warrents a pink slip. Although from the ashes of what was these past two seasons there is something to build on. That will be Herm’s contribution to the Chiefs, oh! …..and two high draft choices because of his sucky seasons. :)

Opinions are like A--holes, everyones got one.

by aPacificChief on Jan 7, 2009 4:57 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Pretty Much

Which is part of why I think that if Carl Peterson takes over down in Miami that team’s never going to see a Super Bowl as long as he’s around.

The Star Also Posted The Q&A In Another Video Link

Peterson admitted that this season wasn’t what anyone wanted or expected so at least he was good enough to admit the Chiefs weren’t getting better.

Then he drew contrasts between himself and his “good friend” George W. Bush which made me even happier that he’s gone.

Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

by UCrawford on Jan 6, 2009 8:26 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

After hearing the Q&A

I am convinced Carl was ready to let Herm go. As a GM you provide the HC with the means necesary to win, as a HC you got to win. Shorter version there, he also said he is glad he does not have to make the decision on Herm. Not defending Carl, but he has hated these last two seasons as much as us.

Lets hope Clark lets the new GM start fresh, with his guys. Who would want a coach, who has lost twice as many as he has won in KC?

by Eric Allen on Jan 6, 2009 9:31 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I Can't Imagine Anyone Associated With The Chiefs Would Have Fun With The Last Two Seasons

Maybe Herm, but I suspect that would just be because he’s happy someone was still paying him $3 million a year to be a head coach.
