Clayton from Espn on Pioli Interview
On todays Mike and Mike in the Morning John Clayton of ESPN said he has heard from his sources that the Pioli interview with the Kansas City Chiefs went really well. He said both sides thought it would be a good fit. Clayton also said that if Pioli is hired as GM Herm Edwards is out.
This is great news on many levels. Not only do we get Scott Pioli, but Herm gets fired as well. Nothing like taking care of two birds with one stone.
Hopefully this is true, and if so hopefully we can get an anouncement or Press conference announcing that Scott Pioli is our new general manager in the next couple of days.

Thanks for the news
Initial reports following Pioli’s interview with Cleveland owner Randy Lerner were also positive so I’ll wait for judgment on this.

One Can Always Hope
Just so long as a deal gets done and we get a quality GM in here so the team can start assembling its coaching staff for next year. Once that happens the rest of the offseason should get a lot brighter…as should the team’s hopes for 2009.
Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

Sounds good
It’s always uncomfortable wishing someone much less a decent guy, fired yet I was on the phone with my brother last nite and when he said Herm might return I almost cursed him out.

Problem With Herm
Is that he’s never given us any reason not to want him fired. His win percentage with the Chiefs (.313) is one of the ten worst in NFL history. His overall win percentage is in the bottom quarter all-time for NFL coaches with at least 50 games (going all the way back to the start of the NFL) . None of the coaches with records comparable to him (Rich Kotite, Jim Hanifan, Alex Webster) ever won a Super Bowl as a head coach. There’s absolutely no reason for him to still be in charge and there’s absolutely no case for keeping him around that can be made from what he’s produced on the field over his career (which is really all that matters).
He’s just a bad football coach and nobody wants a bad football coach in charge of their team. Doesn’t mean you hope the guy gets hit by a bus tomorrow…it just means you want your football team to be good and not stink any more.

+1
Herm is a real likable guy, but if you look at most of the real successful coaches, well, they aren’t real likable… Even Vermeil wasn’t real likable when he was with Philly and at the beginning in St. L – he seemed to get real likable in KC though, and we see what that got us.
I think that most successful HCs would tell you that they aren’t there to make friends with the players, they are there to help the players win games – and if the players don’t like it then they can play elsewhere. If your focus is on being a person of high moral character then you’ll end up nice, if your focus is winning the superbowl, well, you get the picture…
I certainly don’t wish anything bad upon Herm, in fact I hope Denver picks him up as HC (hehehehe), but I won’t shed a tear when he’s gone. He’s had all the time I’m willing to give him to turn this bus around…

As The Old Saying Goes
It’s not a popularity contest.
It’s about wins and losses and Herm’s too far in the red for me to believe he’s anything but a rotten football coach who’s already been given too much time. And I’m sure he’ll be just fine once he leaves here…the Chiefs have paid him very well for his time and if he’s fired I think he gets the last year of his salary anyway. Plus, I think he’ll probably catch on somewhere as a DB coach. He’s shown an aptitude for that and I think he could be very good at it.

Or in someones personnel department
He certainly seems to have done well picking personnel in the secondary. Best of luck to ya Herm, don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out =)

I've Got No Complaints About The DBs
Some people don’t like Pollard but I do…I think he just needs better coaching. And I think there’s a lot of ability in that secondary to build off of.
That’s why I think Herm would be a very good DB coach…he’s got an eye for talent there, if nowhere else.

I've seen more than one Pollard play where the announcers say that he got burned...
but when you look at it POLLARD was in position and it was a LB or nickle back out of position, Pollard makes the tackle 40 yards downfield and get’s blamed for it, but it’s obvious that he made a HUGE play just to get to the guy and stop a TD…

I'll disagree with your last paragraph.
I think Herm is a very good DB coach. Unfortunately, like so many positional coaches and coordinators, he was promoted into a position for which he is not qualified. He is a very poor Head Coach, and I never saw anything in his time in NY to believe that his tenure in KC was going to prove anything else. His teams have never been particularly stout against the run, and their offensive game plans have been lackluster on good days. Tied together with very poor talent evaluation, and this latest regime had nothing to get excited about.
I wish Herm luck finding an opening for a DB coach, but the Chiefs need an Head Coach that can lead them back to prominence.

Never Said He Wouldn't Be A Good DB Coach
In fact I think he’d be a pretty good one. I was talking about being a head coach…he’s crap at it (for pretty much all the reasons you mentioned). But I do think he’s got a good eye for DB talent and that he’d probably be better suited to working with just a few guys in his area of expertise. He’s out of his depth as a head coach and I suspect the same would be true of him as a defensive coordinator.

I agree on the DC role.
The only disagreement was that you said he was a bad football coach. I was simply stating that he is a good positional coach, which is still a football coach. I don’t disagree with anything else you had to say.

By "Football Coach" In That Comment
I actually meant head coach…but I should have specified. I’ve stated several times before that I think he’d be a very good positional coach and that I think he’s got a good eye for DB talent.

May be too early to begin this speculation
But do you think Pioli goes into “win-now” mode, or will build with an eye towards the future (i.e. draft a QB, develop a young team)? Or a mix of both?

It's Probably Premature
But I don’t think he’s going to come in here with the idea of either putting together a team of the aged and decrepit (all free agency) or dumping everyone on the roster who’s in their second contract (nothing but draft). I suspect he’ll build a football team to compete now but try to do it the way most good teams build…through a base of solid drafting while blending in supplementary free agent pickups.

With all of our guys so young
And with a coaching staff that can develop them, there’s no reason to think we won’t be picked to make the playoffs in 2010.
by Joel Thorman on Jan 6, 2009 3:39 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Agreed
And there’s no reason that we can’t compete for the playoffs in 2009. I do believe that with some smart drafting and a good head coach this year this team should be able to win 9 games next season. Can’t say that we’ll make the playoffs, of course, since New England won 11 and couldn’t get in, but a winning record should be an achieveable goal.

Especially in the AFC West
As Herm will be quick to point out, we lost 11 games by 10 points or less lol

The Team's Got Enough Talent To Post A Winning Record
They just need a coaching staff that’s got the first clue of how to use that talent effectively. Right now the Chiefs don’t have that.

I was really hoping the coaching staff would pull it together this year
But they disappointed to no end… Especially Gun… I’m ready for an entirely new coaching staff to come in and get these youngsters all on the same page… I wouldn’t be upset if Chan stayed (I’m not holding my breath, but I liked some of what he did), but everyone else really needs to go…

Because of where he comes from ...
I would think that he would want to build primarily through the draft. The Patriots have always used FA to fill immediate holes, but they have preferred to keep a steady pipeline of depth players. They have drafted every QB I can think of for quite some time (Drew Bledsoe, Tom Brady, and Matt Cassel).

Just saw "The Proffesor" on ESPNews
Apparently he thinks Pioli to KC is the most likely scenario at this point (the situation is better in KC than Cleveland, and he’ll make more money than staying in NE). He also seems to think Pioli will make his decision in the next 24-48 hours.

Guess We'll Find Out Soon Enough
If we get Pioli I’m inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt on his hire…even if it’s Ferentz.

Idk the work is Kirk Ferentz from Iowa. But hopefully someone that’s proven. Idk who but not a college HC and espically Kirk.
by NakedDave on Jan 6, 2009 4:40 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
That's the word from around here as well
The Cleveland Browns want to hire Mangini as head coach, and if that’s the case then Pioli will take himself out of GM consideration as he has indicated wants his own HC in there, Kirk Ferentz. I wasn’t thinking KC would be a viable option for him either, with Herm Edwards already intrenched, but if there is an option for Pioli to bring in his own guys then that changes the equation.
Believe me, it will be a HUGE loss for New England if Pioli leaves town.
Keep the faith!

Marima
Edwards is far from entrenched here in KC. If Pioli does indeed take the job, I would expect him to fire Edwards and bring in a HC of his choice. Clark hunt has stated that the new GM would have a big hand in that decision.
by oldchiefsfan on Jan 6, 2009 5:15 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I wonder?
If Pioli decides KC will be his team and if he decides to stay with Herm for one more year, what would everyone say? That is now doesn’t know what he is doing, or that he is looking to allow the rebuild from this year to take hold, or that he was ordered by Clark to keep him on until the end of his contract?
I’m just curious, because this is also a possibibility. I have serious misgivings about a college FB Coach, and would prefer Herm to some new “Let’s try him out” guy with no professional track record. I’d be more than happy with some of the other pro DCs or OCs, but not college. I’d rather hire a fantastic new DC, stick with Herm for one more year, then promote Chan G or the new high speed DC, or even Shanahan for 2010.
by TXChiefan on Jan 6, 2009 5:04 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
If Pioli Kept Herm
I’ll give Pioli the benefit of the doubt for personnel selection, but I’ll still be against Herm until he proves he can win games and use those personnel. He’s lost more than two-thirds of his games since being here…you don’t pull that off by being unlucky. You pull that off by being completely incompetent at your job.
He’s not coming back, though…if Pioli takes the job, Herm’s gone. Nobody’s going to waste a year and hang their hat on a guy with his record unless they were the ones who hired him to begin with.
Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

I could live with Herm filling out his contract
But not Gun. My biggest demand is that GUNTHER CUNNINGHAM MUST BE FIRED!
Any GM that keeps either Gun or Tim Krumrie on this staff will instantly lose my confidence.
by Sudden on Jan 6, 2009 6:14 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I Don't Think You Have To Worry About It
Gunther’s all out of friends in the front office now that Carl’s gone…I don’t see a new GM coming in, looking at last year’s defense and the lack of top-notch defenses for the last five years (despite all the high defensive draft picks) and thinking that Gunther’s part of the future here. Krumrie’s defensive line was so terrible that I have a tough time believing he’ll survive a purge either.

If we’re going with a new GM and we’re already rebuilding might as well get a new HC in there. Herm at the beginning at the season I thought give him this year and next year to atleast break even. But a new GM changes everything. We might as well keep what good potential we have here player wise. And start all over again. New coaches new scouts new waterboys even. We need to get the losing atmosphere gone. The young players like our potentially awesome secondary stay. Guys like LJ and Sackintosh are not going to be worth the roster space next season or any season after that

No love for the waterboys?

Leave the waterboys outta this man, they had better moves than some of the players this year. : )

I'd be ok with it
as long as he kicked Gunthar Cunningham out on his ass. Herms energy and always positive attitude is good for the young team. Besides, with Cower, Shannahan, Holmgren, and possibly Schottenheimer all waiting around til next year there will be some good caditates available.

Even if Pioli is hired
I still don’t think Ferentz will leave Iowa. He loves that job, and national signing day is next month. With each passing day, I think it’s less and less likely Ferentz would leave. He also has a ton of starters returning on both sides of the ball, even with Shonn Greene going pro. Iowa could easily be a top-15 team next year, maybe even top-10.
His family loves Iowa City (a great college town if ever there was one). He has a kid in high school and his son is on the team. He makes almost 3 million per and walks on water in Iowa. I think it would take the moon and stars to pry him out of that gig.
by DonnyDonovan on Jan 6, 2009 6:10 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
He makes...
3 million per!!! No way! The higest paid HC’s in college make like 2 million max per year. Is that true? I want an Xs and Os kind of guy. Is Ferentz that or like a Herm Edwards motivational speaker?

Not to quibble
But the going rate for an elite level college coach (Carroll, Brown, Tressel etc.) is between $2.7-3 Million per. Nick Saban and Bob Stoops are both over 3.5 million right now.
