Afraid to Axe Herm?

I'm not saying it is the truth, but does anyone think that Herm being black has anything to do with him still being in town?

- Lost 22 of his last 24 games

- Effectively ran our best player into the ground (although LJ is also running himself into the ground)

- Repeatedly deflects blame with the old excuse 'We are very young'

- One of the worst game time coaches of all time.  Always mishandles the clock and uses time outs at very questionable moments.

- Looking at his track record, career record of 54-74

- Was able to make the playoffs in his first year with both the Jets and Chiefs after being handed a decent team in both cases.

I'm tired of the guy, and I really don't see him as a good coach on any level.  Maybe we should keep him on as an overpaid motivational speaker?

No

He was originally hired because he was a friend of Carl Peterson’s. This is only his 3rd season. It’s not unusual to keep a coach that long even if he is losing.

We’re just waiting on the new GM to make his decision on Herm and I think that’s all there is to it.

Additionally, Clark likes him as a person, as many others do.

IMO, Clark wants to believe in him and that is the only reason he hasn’t been fired already.

Absolutely not

Let the new GM be responsible for hiring/firing his head coach.

Look at the Browns and the rumors that they’re losing out on Pioli because they want a specific HC. I think you’re underminding the GM’s position and authority if you put him in a position where he has to hire a new coach. Let him come in and make a move, don’t make it for him.

Herm is black

I am sure that is why Herm isn’t fired. Give me a break. The new GM will decide if he stays or not.

by Aejfan on Jan 5, 2009 8:23 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It's Not Because He's Black

It’s because Hunt’s holding off on any other moves until he gets the GM hired. It’s also likely why Gunther, Krumrie and Priefer haven’t been canned.

Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

I agree

But whatever the case . . . being a good well liked individual does not make you a good coach.

by thepriest on Jan 5, 2009 9:20 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Nope

It has nothing to do with race. Clark isn’t making any moves until we get a new GM. However I disagree with thepriest when he says that Herm isn’t a good coach on any level. He is an excellent secondary coach, and if he wants to continue being a head coach, I think he would be an excellent college coach. Kinda reminds me of Pete Carroll (except Carroll was never that bad with clock management). Just my opinion though.

Let's call him...Trogdor the Burninator!

by mistamic on Jan 5, 2009 10:22 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

You know...

he has won playoff games. The guy isn’t as bad as you all want to make him out to be. The players believe in him. They were busting their ass in sub zero weather with pride as their only incentive during the Miami game. In my opinion Herm had horrible timing when he came to KC. We had a mediocre team that bordered on making the playoffs, which didn’t warrant blowing up the roster. I think this team is one offseason away from being a respectable organization again and I wouldn’t lose sleep at night if the new GM keeps Herm for the last year of his contract. We haven’t drafted this good with Herm since Marty was coaching. I think he is doing the best with what he has, a young inexperienced team with guys off the street for depth. But, if he leaves they better hire someone who isn’t going to blow up the roster again because it will set us two years back. I just wish we would have traded LJ prior to the 2007 season. One of the dumbest moves Peterson made before he got canned. Thats why I’m on the Pioli bandwagan, guy knows when to use them and then lose them.

by chiefsfan1384 on Jan 6, 2009 12:51 AM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Really?

We haven’t drafted this good with Herm since Marty was coaching.
From the one class we can actually evaluate (2006), we’ve got 2 safetys….that’s it.

by primetime 07 on Jan 6, 2009 7:08 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

And From The Class After That

So far it appears we got one WR. Turk and Tank have done pretty much nothing except fill space.

So either the players Herm wanted were horrible or (just as likely) he had no clue how to use them effectively. Either way he sucks as a head coach. You don’t lose over two-thirds of your games for three years by being unlucky…you do it by being incompetent. Extremely incompetent.

As for the players wanting Herm back, they went 2-14 too. So their preferences don’t carry a lot of weight with me, and shouldn’t with anyone else either. Most of them are likely saying that because they’re worried a new coach will come in with a scheme they can’t work in and they’ll lose their jobs. And after a 2-14 season, quite a few of them probably need to lose their jobs, because they didn’t do a very good job in Herm’s scheme and if they can’t adjust to a new one they need to go somewhere else.

Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

That's

the attitude to have if we’re ever going to get a playoff win. I think he gets another season though.

by GHOST OF DT on Jan 6, 2009 7:42 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

By The Way

According to Pro Football Reference, out of 145 coaches who’d coached at least 50 games, Herm Edwards ranks 110th (making him the 36th worst head coach of all time)…down there with guys like Rich Kotite, Jim Hanifan, and Alex Webster. His win percentage from his time with the Chiefs would actually qualify as the 8th worst win percentage ever…worse than guys like Romeo Crennel, Mike Nolan and John McKay (who once lost 26 straight games with the Buccaneers).

Herm Edwards is, simply put, one of the worst coaches in NFL history. After eight years on the job he’s firmly ensconsced in the bottom quarter of all NFL coaches and none of the guys ranked around him ever won a Super Bowl or a championship. So I don’t care what his excuses were…he doesn’t deserve another year. He deserves to get fired.

Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

by UCrawford on Jan 6, 2009 7:57 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Why

would him being black help him keep his job ? It’s because Clark understands trying to build through the draft takes time. I think he gets another year.

by GHOST OF DT on Jan 6, 2009 7:39 AM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It is shockingly obvious that......

it’s clearly a conspiracy intended to keep the white man down. I mean in a league where 65-67% of the players are black, black people make up a hefty 0% of owners, a bigger 13% of all GMs and a even more massive 22% of head coaches. I mean when Lovie Smith and Tony Dungy were playing for the Superbowl a few years back, I mean that was just because the NFL decided that it needed to black coaches to play each other in the Superbowl, the Colts and the Bears clearly weren’t the best teams they we just filling the quotas. Or the Giants team that Jerry Reese built as a GM and subsuquently won the SuperBowl, it’s obvious to anyone with a pulse that the teams they beat clearly just laid down in order to let the black guy take it. I mean Herm’s hiring couldn’t have been based on the fact that he was qualified (what black person really is anyway???) to be a HC. I mean look how the Jets fans react to him, they are usually so loving and supportive, second only to the Eagles and the Giants. You know that white coaches never keep thier jobs after consecutive losing seasons as a matter of fact I can’t remember the last white coach who had a losing year or a year where they didn’t make the playoffs. The bottom line is this……. Black Men have to have White Man lead them. Herman Edwards is just a result of the black power structure in the upper echelons of the NFL flexing its collective muscle to keep him in power. See the look of certainty he has in his eyes? He’s a man who knows he’s coming back next year.

I Can't Tell...

…whether to be greatly amused or utterly horrified by ill_spec’s comments. It’s so tough to tell in writing if someone’s being sarcastic. But I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt. :)

It’s like a football version of Poe’s Law

by PVChiefsfan on Jan 6, 2009 10:40 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Heh

I’d never heard of Poe’s Law before…thanks for the heads-up.

The kind of confusion that gets created by absurdist arguments in the written format is why I always try to use smiley faces or other emoticons when I’m being sarcastic…there’s a substantial group of people out there who either can’t recognize a sarcastic argument or actually hold completely absurd beliefs (e.g. 9/11 "truthers") so the point is lost on them unless you clearly point out what you’re doing.

Regarding the OP
Effectively ran our best player into the ground (although LJ is also running himself into the ground)

Tony Gonzalez is our best player…

*Effectively ran our most important player that carried our team to the playoffs into the ground.

by thepriest on Jan 8, 2009 9:18 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I don't give a flying F#@K if he's green with fuscia polka dots......

excuses aside, his track record has proven he’s a lousy HC. Period. Get over it. Best of luck to you in your future endeavors Mr. Edwards….

on a side note: perhaps we could send LJ and Herm to Tampa for their 3rd round pick and grab Greene out of Iowa? I’ve recently watched some film on him and he has this uncanny ability to avoid lodging his helmet into his linemens arse, which in my book is always a plus when its 3rd and inches….just a thought.

36th Worst Head Coach Of All Time

That’s all I need to know about the guy. When his coaching comparables are Jim Hanifan and Rich Kotite, I don’t want him anywhere near the football team I root for.

Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

by UCrawford on Jan 6, 2009 11:03 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Concerning Greene

Considering that if we get Pioli (which is looking increasingly likely based on the limited media we Chiefs fans get), we’ll probably end up with Ferentz leading the team, the possibility of grabbing Greene becomes greatly enhanced.

by Sudden on Jan 6, 2009 3:46 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

axe Herm...

I’d like to axe him what he thinks will make a difference between this year and next.

Doing the same thing he did this year isn’t going to work. If he is going to stick around, some things are going to have to change. His strategies don’t seem to be effective – whether it’s going soft on the players during training camp and the bye week. His “low scoring, posession” type game strategy.

Of course, if you were to axe him, I’m sure he’d just ice-skate around a real answer and give you the normal cliche answers we got all year – we’re young, we’re injured… yada… yada…
