Something tells me this is going to be closer than most expect
may possibly go the Ohio way
We need a future defensive leader, his name is James Laurinaitis and he can be selected in round 1 of the upcoming Draft.

no one thought Graham Harrell would be a Dentist today
since he had some many good looks at the teeth of Ole Miss defenders chasing him all day.

That was an SEC team though
and you’re talking about a Big-10 team here. The Big-10 doesn’t even deserve to be a BCS conference anymore.
Texas by a score that will look closer than the game really is. (I’ll call it 13, but it will be domination by the horns)

Every time I think a Big 10 team will come to play
they get blown out. I will stick with my Big 12 bias and go with Texas. They are definitely one of the top 3 teams I watched play in college this season. Hopefully we will see if Orakpo can elevate his draft stock, which would compound the question of if he is worthy of #3 overall?

Maybe it is just the camera angle, but he looks EXTREMELY undersized.

HE is about 260
NOt very big for DE. He could be a freeney type player.

I hope so. I had to look up his measurements, and he still doesn't look 6'4'' 260.
I’m not doubting his talent, but he looks like he would disappear against NFL linemen. Again, I am only speaking to how his size looks.

You may be right, but
as far as this game, he has only 1 move and he is getting owned by the Big 10, so far.
This is my first game watching him and he hasn’t played in a month, so I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.
But Texas usually forces the opposition into passing as they outscore so many teams, which creates obvious pass rushing situations.
From what I’ve seen tonight, Orakpo’s only move is to speed the outside. Everytime he has had to do something else, he has been driven back. He has been non-existant against the run, so far.
The Chiefs already have an entire first day DL with a 1 move DE, I just don’t want to make the same mistake again. From what I have seen so far of Orakpo, he needs a lot of development despite any natural ability.

I agree with DThomas
Underweight DEs can get swallowed up. Thats one of Hali’s problems, is that he is underweight. He ranges between 255-270 and against physical Tackles he gets pushed around sometimes.
The bad thing is that ALL the top DEs in this years draft are underweight and are likely to have trouble against NFL Tackles.

He will probably fare better
Playing for a team that plays on turf. His speed is an asset and like Freeney he can get around the end quickly.

I think our best chance for a good Free Agent DE
Is Terrell Suggs. Good chance that Baltimore will franchise him also, but they have several good defensive players set to go free agent and they will have to decide which one they want most.

Not impressed so far.
Orakpo looks good when he get’s that step around the corner and the LT isn’t quick enough to get his body in front of him. Watch when he isn’t able to get around the tackle, he’s been stood up once or twice, and really isn’t making that much of a disturbance.

Exactly!
I was going to wait until the end of the 2nd quarter to make the same point.
Every time he has to do something other than speed around the tackle, the OL stands him up and he gets zero push.

Since he can't get that step on running plays, he has been a liability against the run all game.

Great point
And if you ask me, that’s not worth a #3 pick in this years draft.
I really like him as a pass rusher, but not the kind of guy I want to get with the #3 pick and invest millions of dollars in.
Another interesting thing to note about this game is the play of Lauriniatis (sp?). Driving home from work I was listening to the pregame and they had Kiper talking about how he doesn’t expect him to go until the 20-32 range.

That's what I've been hearing
Assuming we don’t/can’t, we’re high enough in the 2nd round to realistically jump back into the 1st to snag him. If we think he’s the guy, why not?

Haven't watched enough games to know if I want him
But if we are going to make a trade to get a second first round pick, and we spend it on a LB, can we please, please get Maulaluga? I just think that guy is a beast and would love to see him in the middle of our D for years to come.

I have lived in the Baltimore area for 5 years and have adopted the Ravens as the only other team I will remotely root for after the Chiefs.
After following them closely for 5 seasons, and seeing how different the D is every time Ray Lewis out of the game, I would be more than willing to take Ray M with the 3rd pick.
Knowing what we know now, would anyone hesitate at taking Ray Lewis with the 3rd pick?
I am not saying Ray M is RayRay, but they have many of the same qualities.
I want Ray M over my man-crush from last season (Michael Oher) with our first pick.

I agree.
Laurinaitis has been over-pursuing his gaps all night. 3 times I have seen him race to the wrong gap on running plays at the line of scrimmage.
Every time, there was no one behind him for 20 yards until the safeties. If the other players hadn’t made the stop, Laurinaitis would have been responsible for large rnning gains up the middle.
We have seen enough of that by our LBs already.
Orakpo and Laurinaitis may become great NFL players, but I do not see it tonight.

I have watched some highlights of
Laurianitis and I noticed that he doesn’t deliver the finishing blow. He stands up the offensive guy but his teammates usually finish the job for him. I definitely like Maualuga but Aaron Curry is a hell of a LB and may be great in the NFL.

Laurianitis looks like a typical 2008 Chiefs LB, big hit for a loss of six and two steps too slow in coverage.

I thought Orakpo looked good
He had a big sack to basically end the game, and also had an early pressure that should’ve forced an INT but his teammate dropped the ball, and forced a blatant holding call early by blowing past the OT. He makes plays, and should be an excellent pass rusher in the NFL.
He’d probably be better as a #8 overall pick or whatever, (I’d love for us to be able to trade down there anyway) but I think he’ll be smacking lots of QBs in the NFL.

…..is ranked higher in scouts inc. to 32 than orakpo. maybin is 6th on the list and orakpo is 12th. i think orakpo is a little undersized but has upside if coached right. but maybin may be the best pro ready stater for defensive end in this years draft
