Scott Pioli "Excited" about Kansas City Chiefs GM Opportunity
via media.scout.com
Here's a Sunday night treat for you. Don Banks of Sports Illustrated is reporting that Patriots VP of Player Personnel Scott Pioli is "excited" by the opportunity the Kansas City Chiefs GM opening presents.
Reading the latest tea leaves, that puts Pioli in the Chiefs' wheelhouse. League sources tell me Pioli seems excited about the opportunity in Kansas City, which he's believed to be interviewing for Monday.
With the latest news that the Browns appear willing to hire George Kokinis and Eric Mangini to fill the GM/Coach openings, this should bring some excitement to Kansas City as it appears the Chiefs are in the lead for Pioli's services.
Clark Hunt's hush-hush nature regarding the Chiefs GM search caused many (of us) to speculate that he's getting behind the eight ball in the hiring process. However, it appears the Chiefs are still very much in play for Pioli's first GM gig.
Why Kansas City?
Banks reports that Pioli is intrigued by the plethora of young talent on the Chiefs roster including players like Branden Albert, Brandon Flowers and Brandon Carr.
We've all heard that Pioli and his family have connections in Cleveland. However, his wife was born in Wichita, KS and still has family there. Banks speculates that Kansas City may be a better fit for Pioli's family.
From a lifestyle perspective, Kansas City might be a better fit for Pioli than even Cleveland.
On top of all that, if Pioli were to choose Kansas City, he'd have over $30 million in cap space to play with.
Put all of that together and Kansas City is the best GM job in the NFL right now. And Pioli is still perceived as the best GM candidate in the NFL. A match made in heaven if you ask me.

Awesome...
We will see what happens…This seems alot like Don Banks just trying to say he predicted it in case it does happen…But he says what alot of us have been saying for a while…
Also…that picture of Pioli makes his moobs look quite intimidating…He migh tbe trying too hard to imitate Parcells…

I truly hope this isn't just another leverage play.
I want Pioli…as long as he doesn’t hire Ferentz as HC.

then would
josh daniels(i think thats his name) be our next head coach? or would he go for somebody like mike shanahan and daniels as OC? any any event this is exciting news

Not sure
But Clark made it clear that he’ll hire the GM then the rest is pretty much up to the GM.
Josh McDaniels and Kirk Ferentz from Iowa are the names I’m hearing being linked to Pioli.

i dont know ive heard that
shanahan would like to some to KC so
GM- Pioli
HC- Shanahan
OC- McDaniels
DC- TBD
that would be one hell or an orginazation

Doubt it
The Broncos still own his rights and the owner Pat Bowlen specifically said he would support Shanahan going to any team EXCEPT Kansas City.

I may be wrong actually
I realized that right after I posted it. The Broncos are still paying him for the next 3 years which is where I got confused. I’m thinking of players that retire, not coaches.
by Joel Thorman on Jan 4, 2009 7:12 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
ahhhhhh
understandable….Interesting thing about the Broncos paying him as Florio pointed out the other day, if a team hires him for less than 7 million a year they have to pay the rest (it is offset by the new team, basically) and so he could take a job for less money in the first 3 years of the contract, knowing he would be guaranteed 7 million, it just wouldnt be all coming from his new organization…
by woodman212 on Jan 4, 2009 7:14 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Bowlen is only on the hook for Shanny's salary for the remainder of his contract, since he fired him.
Anything Shanny makes from a new coaching job will be deducted from the amount per annum Bowlen owes Shanny.
He has no control over Shanny’s rights. He would if Shanny retired/resigned.

Franchised with the intention to trade...
…That’s how the news is out, in fact…Mike Lombardi originally reported they would Franchise him to gain compensation for him…That’s still surely the case…They cannot have 30 million of cap space tied up in two players of the same position…

I'm tempering my excitement, but ...
this sounds pretty good. The Patriots have been a premier franchise due to the operation of the entire organization. Their ability to fill holes while sticking to their plan is envied by any football fan of any other team. He won’t have the same coach, but it sure would be nice to see the Chiefs run with a sincerity to win a championship.

This would be a major coup for Clark Hunt if this happened
Making his first major hier as owner of the franchise be bringing home the premiere GM candidate of the last couple of years would be making a huge statment to players and coaches around the league that this isn’t the same old Kansas City anymore.

The other things we have going for us...
…is that we have a fairly new owner with perhaps a bit less ego than some of the other tenured owners. Word is the Browns were turned off by Pioli’s desire for so much control. I guess the Browns front office feels like their track record speaks for itself??? Oh well, it’s their money so they can consider themselves football geniuses if they want. So to recap, aguy like Pioli should look at the Chiefs and see a team that
A) Has alot of young talent but isn’t necessarily married to any single player (great for a personnel guy)
B) Has cap room
C) Has a Fairly new energetic owner willing to put his trust in the new GM
D) Should have a head coach opening soon and some marquis coaches without jobs
E) Plays in a city that supports it’s team with a college-like fervor
F) Already has pretty good trading chips in LJ and a high draft pick (if necessary)
E) Is located in a city near some family ties…good to hear his wife has family in Wichita
F) Despite it’s recent woes is a storied franchise going back to the start of the league
Did I miss anything?

It sounds like things are in motion, good deal.
I think we wind up with McDaniels as HC, Crennel as defensive coordinatoor. I like the idea of an offensive minded HC with a proven DC who has a superbowl ring. Already excited for next season, heres to scoring more than 15 points a game!!!
Lets hope Clark lets the new GM start fresh, with his guys. Who would want a coach, who has lost twice as many as he has won in KC?

If I was Pioli
and hypothetically came to the Chiefs (which I don’t believe he is), why would you waste the money on Cassel? Why with our young talent and great draft picks would you want to recreate the Patriots when you have the tools at your disposal to create your own? I guess I can understand if he brings McDaniels in and they’re looking to install their system, but Matt Cassel was never a great QB prospect and is New England’s version of Thigpen. I’m not stating Matt isn’t a good quarterback, its just he’s had the luxury of being developed by the best organization in football. His salary won’t be worth it especially when we’re in good sitting to draft and develop our very own franchise QB who’s gonna be a better prospect than Cassel.
I’m just all together weary of huge contracts really…
by KansasCityShuffle on Jan 5, 2009 1:01 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
+1
New England is smart for putting the franchise tag on Cassel. They know he’s a hot item right now and some team may be sucker enough to give away a #1 pick for him. Got to hand it to NE they know how to play the game.
In order to sign Cassel a team must be willing to give up a 1st and 3rd for him, but most likely will trade Cassel for the bargain price of just a number one, and make the SUCKER team feel like they just walked off with a deal. A 1st round draft choice for a pernnial backup who had ONE good year? Yeah right!
Opinions are like A--holes, everyones got one.

Correction on the compensation package that has to be paid to NE if you sign Cassel after a franchis tag.

by aPacificChief on Jan 5, 2009 6:33 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
NO ONE
Is giving up 2 1st round picks for Cassel, and DEFINETLY not the Chiefs who have the #3 pick and likely a decent 1st round pick next year.
Possibly, after the draft, some team will trade 2010’s #1 pick for him, and the Pats may well do that if it looks like Brady is improving on his recovery.
The Pats are ‘playing the game’ astutely as always…all the more reason Clark needs to make Pioli an offer he can’t refuse.
by kcsno56 on Jan 5, 2009 9:46 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Cassel's Definitely Not Worth It
And all aPacificChief was saying is that two first-rounders are the default rate for a franchised guy if the team that wants to sign him doesn’t work out a trade first. The actual trade would probably be more like a 1st and a 3rd (or in Cassel’s case possibly a 1st and a 2nd, since he is a QB and had a very impressive year). Still not worth it to us considering the holes this team has…we’re better off sticking with Thigpen and/or signing a 2nd tier free agent QB to fill in (Losman wasn’t good this year, but he’s been solid in most other years and will likely be fairly cheap this offseason) while drafting a QB on the first day to be a developmental project (I still think Graham Harrell is a great selection).
Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

If someone makes that trade they will
be married to Cassel. I can’t see anyone making that trade. I also think this could be some posturing by the Pats.

I'm Not Really So Certain About That
Brady had a pretty catastrophic knee injury and if the reports of him being set back are true (which they may or may not be) then the Pats might want to keep Cassel as a contingency plan until they know Brady’s 2009 status for certain. Under the franchise tag all they’d have to give him is a one year contract (albeit one that will be very pricy given it’ll be an average of the salary of the top five QBs in the league) and they’ll have a couple more months to figure out Brady’s status for next year…after that they can trade him off to someone else. And if some other team desperately wants him before they figure out what’s up with Brady they can get some nice picks to rebuild with.
Franchising Cassel is just the smart move by the Pats from a personnel perspective…I doubt that it’s posturing unless signing Cassel to that one year contract would completely screw their cap up.
Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

It won't
I doubt that it’s posturing unless signing Cassel to that one year contract would completely screw their cap up.
The reports this weekend were that keeping both QB’s would set them back $30Million. Considering that the cap will be at $136Mil. next year, the general consensus is that they’ll have plenty of money for the rest of the team…$106Mil.

Yeah
That 2010 season is looking verrrrrry interesting the closer we get.
I’m sure that the NFL owners will try and impose their own type of salary cap (which they should have the right to do) but if baseball is any indication that’s not going to do a damned thing to keep costs down and control contracts. The smart teams are still going to pay players based on what they’ll produce in the future rather than what they’ve produced in the past and owners’ desire to create a product that the teams’ fans are going to want to see (and to field competitive squads) is going to undermine owner solidarity on maintaining limits on costs.
Do you seriously believe that if Jerry Jones sees a shot at grabbing a title by outbidding his competitors for talent that he’s not going to screw over the other NFL owners to make that happen, even if it drives up costs for everyone else? Hell no…he won’t be able to help himself. Guys who build billion+ dollar stadiums don’t have the ego that allows them to be frugal penny-pinchers…especially in Texas. :)

The Guys Who I Think Are Really Going To Get Screwed
Are the retired players, who’ll see a decreased slice of the revenue pie since the NFLPA’s responsibility is and always will be to see to the interests of the active players first.\
And that’s not really a bad thing either…after all, it’s legacy costs to retired workers that are a large part of why GM, Chrysler and Ford are in such a mess.

Jerry? He does what’s best for the league. It’s about the league and not about his team winning champioships. He’s loyal to his coaches and is interested in leaving a positive legacy for all the owners. He’s also investing in some oceanfront property in Arizona for his players to go once they retire ;)

The dude is a selfish prick who cares only about himself. The guy complained about the revenue sharing when the Cowboys were on top of the world with their Championship runs.
I have a nephew who worked for Footlocker, and he notice that on all the licensed NFL apparel all 31 teams were all priced at the same wholesale cost, except DALLAS who had an extra $1 put on all Cowboys merchandise.
If given the chance Jones will screw the league as long as he can benefit from it.

That’s an excellent idea of JJ buying beach front property for his former players in Arizona. Now the Cowboy players only have to wait for Nostrodamus’ prediction that Califonia will fall off with a great quake to take advantage of that beach side property.
