Case for Garcia
Do not get me wrong I don't want Garcia as the starter but I believe Jeff Garcia being brought to KC will probably allow us to go somewhere other than Mark Sanchez with the #3 overall pick.
Garcia can be signed at a cheapo price, plus he's an unrestricted free agent so no compensation for him. There's going to be a new regime in Tampa so all bets are that they let him go. Plus I have heard that very discreetly the Bucs' are looking to pick up Josh Freeman in the first round of the upcoming draft so Garcia is as good as gone. There aren't many teams out there that are going to rave for Garcia's services so if KC goes after him they'll be on a short list.
Young quarterbacks generally tend to soar when a veteran QB is there to show them the ropes. Steve Young was on the roster in Jeff Garcia's rookie year and Garcia ended up passing for nearly 2600 yards, 11 TD's, 11 INT's, 231 rushing yards, and 2 rushing touchdowns. Not too shabby considering he filled in for an injured Steve Young and shared time with Steve Stenstrom. He came back strong the following year with a 4,278 passing yard (31 TD 10 INT), 414 rushing yard (4 TD) campaign. At 6'1" Garcia is definitely a small guy at QB seeing as the league desires QB's that are generally 6'5" or taller. Thigpen stands at the same height but weighs in 50 pounds heavier.
Here's a list of QB's that are still in the league that benefited from having veteran QB's around in the early years (QB pairs where younger QB was drafted in round 2 or later)
Eli Manning/ Kurt Warner
Phillip Rivers/Doug Flutie, Drew Brees
Chad Pennington/ Vinnie Testeverde
Tony Romo(RFA)/Vinny Testeverde
Matt Hasselbeck(6)/ Brett Favre
Carson Palmer/ John Kitna
Jay Cutler/ Jake Plummer
Drew Brees(2)/ Doug Flutie
Tom Brady(6)/ Drew Bledsoe
It's funny as you go over the young to vet comparisons the young quarterbacks eventually formed a style very similar to that of the veterans that occupied the roster at the time. Thigpen is very similar to Garcia in that they must both rely heavily on mobility to make up for the lack of size. I say we go Thigpen, Garcia, and Graham Harell(4th round selection) or Quinn Gray as our QB situation in 2009. If we fail miserably then the QB class next year is going to be very impressive. Don't get me wrong I don't want to throw away a season but why not improve the chances of getting a killer ROI on Thigpen before we go all crazy and draft a signal caller we don't necessarily need?

Same age as Kurt Warner… Why not?? Maybe I should have made the case for Byron Leftwich instead? I just really wanna sign a vet rather than try and draft a QB and Jeff Garcia makes the most sense to help groom Tyler Thigpen
Thigpen started for half the year already
Why not let him play again? Why does he have to sit?

Not saying sit him
Just saying have Garcia as a veteran backup to show Thiggy the ropes and possibly fill in if Thigpen sucks halfway through the season
Oh, he'll be forced into that role eventually
But I could easily see a team desperate at the QB position starting him. The Lions, maybe the Vikings, etc.
I dont care if he is the same age as Kurt Warner...
Either one of them would die behind our O-Line…
Yes, our O-Line is still embarassing, even behind the spread which takes considerable amounts of pressure off the O-Line they performed subpar…
If you are wishing to sarcrifice Kurt or Jeff to the football gods then I guess that is one way to go about it.
Oh hell no
God I hate Garcia. Ever since he entered the league with the the 49ers. He’s one of the most ungraceful QB’s to play the game. I wish he would just retire. I suppose the only thing that gets under my skin more than talk of drafting Sanchez is talk of signing Garcia.

Garcia is not
the type of QB that will groom young players. He is too stuck on himself.
I like soup!!!
Garcia would be PERFECT
to fix KC’s mold of picking up San Fran’s retreds. Montana, Grbac, and now Garcia. Maybe next off season we could pick up Hill too!!!
hahahahahahahahaha — Garcia only beats out 2 “veteran” prospects as a teacher – Vince Young and Daunte Culpepper, and I don’t want either one of them any more than I want Garcia.
Maybe if we just added Garcia’s wife as a Cheerleader that would count twords our trend of taking SF’s retreds.

Add Steve DeBerg also. He wae in SF during Montana’s rookie year. Does that mean by the original poster’s theory that DeBerg helped make Joe Montana great?
