ATTN: SCOTT PIOLI

It seems to be the thing to do, to tell you how to do your job lately so I'm going to try to be cool too, and jump on the band wagon. By executing all of these off season transactions, the CHIEFS have a chance to be a contender for the SUPER BOWL in 2009. Yes I said it, the super bowl. And with a MINIMUM of 35 million in cap room for next year (and the raising of season tickets that came out today, so Clark won't be too upset) this is very possible to legitimately get done.

HEAD COACH

1.      Todd Haley-    1st choice. Offensive genius that has a new flavor of style that the league is transforming to, and is also young (like Pioli and Hunt) which means he could be start of a new dynasty with new GM & Owner. Other reason why he is top candidate is more understood with further reading of my list.

2.      Jason Garrett- Will likely be a head coach somewhere soon (possibly even in Dallas in 2010). Would be a good fit and a spark to our offense.

CORDINATORS (on the belief that Todd Haley is our new HC)

1.      Offensive- either a QB coach or other assistant from Arizona, that knows Haley's offense, or even incumbent Chan Gailey since his offense is more "new-school" or college like, and compares to Haley's (except he didn't have the weapons like the Cardinals).

2.      Defensive- Kansas City needs to go back to an attack, blitz, hit you in the mouth defense. We need to go away from the "bend but don't break" Herm style. Our defense needs to be feared like it was in Marty ball. Nothing got Arrowhead as loud as when we were known for our Brick House hits. My candidates to coach this would be Dave McGinnis (Tennessee linebackers coach), Jim Johnson (Philly's D-Cord), and Clancy Pendergast (Arizona D-Cord) who actually is rumored to have one of the hardest defenses to prepare for b/c of how many looks and blitzes he shows every game.

NFL DRAFT

1.      MICHAEL CRABTREE!!! I'm sure people will think I'm crazy to take a WR with the 3rd overall pick, with so many more important positions needing filled, but hear me out. Crabtree is the hands down the best player in the draft and a threat to score on every snap. Even though KC isn't hurting at WR's on the roster, they are hurting with talent there. As much as I love Dwayne Bowe, he is a number 2 WR, that needs to work on his hands since he is a possession receiver. Mark Bradley, I truly believe will be a great #3 receiver and the Bears will regret cutting him after seeing what he will do in 2009. Darling hasn't shown me anything, and neither has Will Franklin (injured most of 2008). Jeff Webb should be moved and only concentrate on Kickoff returns to make the team. I don't understand why he didn't have more of a chance when his first return ever went 50 yards and last year's KOR was pathetic. But back to Crabtree. He is a playmaker and a ball hog, and doesn't seem to have a big mouth like others WR's in the NFL. With Haley as the head coach, Crabtree will be the next Fitzgerald. KC will then be an offensive threat with Crabtree, Bowe, Bradley, & don't forget the best receiving TE in history Tony G (who has 5 good years in him left no question).

2.      2nd Round - Draft the best offensive lineman there is. Hopefully a LT so Prince Albert can move back to a more comfortable G position with Brian Waters. Mark Sanchez will possibly still be on the board and a possibility as well.

3.      Rest of Draft- more OL and Defense. We need 2 LBs min, which will have to come from FA or the Draft. Also in 2009, play Jarred Page more as WLB, with DJ at MLB. Page is gaining weight (good weight at that) and already likes to put his nose in the mix like a LB  and could be very good with his speed. If Page can play OLB, 2010 first round pick NEEDS to be USC Safety Taylor Mays #2. Mays will be the best Safety in the NFL in 3 years. By adding him to the secondary with Pollard, Carr, and Flowers will make our defensive the toughest in the league- and young as well, so they can stay together and truly start a new dynasty!

FREE AGENTS SIGNINGS OR TRADES THAT NEED TO HAPPEN

  • Albert Haynesworth -obviously going to be one of the most expensive, but worth it. By adding Haynesworth to play the 1 tech will significantly change the entire defense. Not only will he himself just improve it, but it will give a chance for non-existent Glenn Dorsey to become a playmaker himself. Dorsey would then not have to worry about holding up offensive linemen until he read the play (he's not big enough nor strong enough to do this, and it showed in 2008), but it will allow him to shoot the gaps and use his quickness to blow up plays like he did so often in college.

·         Julies Peppers or Kenechi Udeze- Peppers is obviously more attractive to the naked eye b/c of his previous accomplishments. I'm not against signing him by all means and would really approve of it as well, but I would look really hard in analyzing Udeze. He was a former 1st round pick out of USC that has gone unheard of since b/c he had leukemia. Supposedly he is fully recovered and in better health than ever and would be much cheaper to trade for with the Vikings (since he is a backup to all pro Jared Allen). He also is only 25 and would have more years to play than Peppers. Either way, 2008 showed that Tamba Hali needs someone else to help take the attention off of him to shine. If both Haynesworth and either Peppers/Udeze are in KC next year, they will have THE BEST DEFENSIVE LINE in the league hands down. Hali, Haynesworth, Dorsey, Peppers/Udeze...;-)

  • Matt Leinart or Vince Young for QB- first things first, Tyler Thigpen is NOT the franchise QB of the future! I do however believe that if you don't get Leinart, Young, or Anderson/Quinn that you give him another year as the starter. Don't waste the #3 pick with a QB, b/c this years crop is not even close to how good next years will be. I enjoyed watching him play and do believe with time he will continue to develop but still not to the level that can bring this team to Super Bowl contenders. He is a solid back up, but not fast enough to be the threat of a Vince Young or Michael Vick. And his completion percentage was terrible when you look into it further. Most teams played the Chiefs this year pretty passively, with a lot of zone coverage and minimal blitzes. Granted he didn't have much help with the O-Line and no run game, but 54% isn't enough when people are playing soft defense. Leinart would be a great fit b/c he would know Haley's offense. I'm sure he's more developed now with learning from Warner and would be better than Matt Cassell. Don't forget, Matt Cassell never played in college b/c of Leinart and there's a reason because of it. Vince Young is a player that is my long shot. It sure would please the fans that want Thigpen b/c of his ability to scramble. Young is going to be a starter within 2 years if not next. Titans have to deal with that with him and Collins. But by getting Young (and having drafted Crabtree) I believe that Todd Haley could have some fun with play calling next year!

  • An Avg. Power Running Back - Trade Larry Johnson. With the above style of offense that I would create, Larry's style doesn't fit. More of a spread offense will let Jamaal Charles be the man. He does need to get tougher so he doesn't get hurt, but showed me signs this year that in the right offense he's a player. Chiefs will need a power running back at times too, but they shouldn't go sign a big contract type of guy. Possibly draft one. Although Larry is a power back (and hypothetically saying he wants to come back and likes what the Chiefs are doing with Pioli/new HC) he won't be happy when he doesn't get his 25 carries a game. And honestly he should be. He's not effective until he wears Defenses out. So trade him. Chiefs aren't going to end up on a plus on this deal but get what you can. Whoever they trade him to will be getting a steal, quote me on that. When LJ has new life with a new team, he will be one of the top 5 running backs in the league. I guarantee it. Also look to pick up a much needed Fullback for short yardage too.

  • Matt Birk/ Jason Brown - both are Free Agents and either will better our line instantly. Dr. Rudy isn't the answer and change is needed. If Leinart is a Chief, you do need to think about a Right Tackle to protect his blind side since he's a lefty.

  • LB's- One way or another in 2009 the Chiefs need another playmaker LB. Someone like Dansby (AZ), or one of the 3 from Baltimore. It will be surprising if the Ravens can sign all three. I'd test the waters of the draft here too. Possibly a slip from the 1st round could fall to us. One way or another, the Chiefs need LB's. I'd also like to see DJ play some middle to see if he could handle it and bring down Page like stated above. Only problem would be filling in the other safety until 2010 with Taylor Mays. Could McGraw do it? Idk.

This I know is a lot to accomplish over one offseason, but if anyone could do it I believe we have the man that can. If not, make me GM and I will! The free agents/draft position/ salary cap is there perfectly for this set up and I truly believe that next year we will be the 2008 Miami Dolphins.

This makes no sense

I know we have a ton of cap room( about $40 mil), but there is no way we could sign the #3 pick, haynesworth, peppers, Jason Brown, Dansby. We have to be realistic with who we can/will sign in free agency. Also, Pioli isnt the kind of GM to throw boatloads of money at free agents. It is more likely he signs multiple 2nd tier free agents for less money than 1 or 2 superstars(Haynesworth/Peppers/ etc.)

We CAN BUILD ON THIS(without Herm)!

by bradelli58 on Jan 27, 2009 9:50 PM CST reply actions

99% of the time, i completely agree with you that you sign 2nd Tier guys, however NO TEAM has ever had this much room cap space as we do. Right now (without contracts of 12 FA the chiefs have) we have 70 MILLION in cap room! And Clark Hunt is a winner, and I can tell will do what it takes to win. And he’s also a spender. Pioli is the highest paid GM in the NFL, and he also just put $125 m of his own money into Arrowhead for renovations on top of what Jackson county approved. Signing Haynesworth and peppers at most cost you $15 mil a year combined (still making both of them highest paid at their position) and would still leave the chiefs with 55 mil to spare! These to me are not even in question b/c of how much of an impact they make right away. Believe me 70 million under is a TON of money. A new proven center is a must. And crabtree will make half of what signing a QB at no. 3 will.

How do you know it was his own money?

It could have been from the killin’ he made last year from Chiefs fans! LOL!

How I would get them there?

I would get them coach plane tickets and fly them down so they watch it in person. That would be nice. :)

finally a man who thinks like me :)

We need a future defensive leader, his name is James Laurinaitis and he can be selected in round 1 of the upcoming Draft.

Ok already, if you don't agree with what I am saying, just don't email my mom again. She beat the crap out of me with my keyboard!

People

hop on bandwagons (Aaron Curry anyone?) and run with whoever is the “daily special” around here (ahem, Todd Haley?).

Nice little writeup here, was kind of entertaining, but 98% of that won’t happen, so don’t get your hopes up ;)

Haley
Offensive genius ?
How do we know he is an offensive genius. Is this his offense or is he taking orders from Whisenhunt (sorry if mispelled).
I think people are making too much of Haley. No one has heard of him til Arizona made this unlikely run at the Super Bowl.
Russ Grimm I’d take in a heartbeat but I’m not sold on Haley

VInce Young or Matt Leinhart?

You enjoy flushing the money and draft picks we’d have to give up for them down the toilet?
Comming from a TEXAS guy: Vince Young was all but a gaurentee to be a BUST when he was drafted. I know a lot of people didn’t want to believe that. I know a lot of people said VY’s nay-sayers were overly concerned with his wonderlic scores and poor passing accuracy. I also know that the eyes don’t lie. I wouldn’t trade Brodie Croyle for Vince Young straight up.

Matt Leinhart on the other hand actually has potential. Potential to get beat for the starting job by someone like Collins, Warner, or Rex Grossman.
What is so wrong about drafting a SENIOR QB later in round 3-4 and putting them in to compete with Thigpen? If you have to bring in a veteran look more twords and aging dinasaur. Let’s not give the Chiefs any reason to start another year with a “plug-n-play badly” cast off from some other team.

Rebuttle

First off I’m 100% against bringing in an “aging dinasaur!” That has no intelligence behind it i’m sorry. You wanna go over to San Fran and get Alex Smith too or what? Why when your building a dynasty, bring in someone who will retire with you in 2 years? The only reason for that would be to groom a young QB that you already have and think could take the reins soon. And the Chiefs DON’T HAVE THAT!!! Thigpen will NEVER be that, and Croyle is lucky to land such a hot wife early, b/c he will NEVER play again anywhere! Vince Young is brought in for your offensive package. If your going to stay and try to have a QB battle with Thigpen, you need to bring in another same-style QB. It’s like apples and oranges when you compare Thigpen to a pocket QB like Leinart per say. It depends on what style of offense you want to have. I’m not against taking a QB later in the Draft at all, just don’t do it with the #3 pick overall, especially with the little talent there is this year. Next year the 3rd best QB is still better than this years 1st. Leinhart will be a good QB in the league! And so what if you have to give up draft picks for it.. would you rather get 2 more Junior Savii’s or Justin Medlock’s than to get your franchise QB? Its crazy how everyone thinks the Draft is the only answer, after the 3rd round only 20% are still with your team after 3 seasons!!!

I too at first was hesitant on the hype of Todd Haley. But here’s why I’m all for it. Even if Whisenhunt is giving the calls, Haley is learned it. He knows it and would retain it and bring it to KC. I’m also for him, b/c he’s young. Pioli/Hunt aren’t going to want to bring in an thick-headed, my way or the highway old coach. Together they all three can mold and have the ability to stay in KC for more than 3 seasons. Also, the game of football has changed. more dramatically in college, but more and more in the NFL every year. It’s not smash mouth football anymore. Haley brings the new style of play that Defensive Cord. haven’t completely figured out yet.

Here this, one true test will be the Super Bowl. If Haley and the Cardinals can still find ways to get Fitz the ball with all this hype of him out there, b/c it’s no mystery of the Cardinals being under estimated to the Steelers, he is one of the best OC’s in the game! Sunday we will see!

And btw anyone to think that Curry should be the 3rd pick overall, i’m questioning their intelligence. if you really want him, trade down b/c he will still be available later on. The only pick besides Crabtree at #3 would be the best OL available. Don’t think defensive line here. Our last 3 1st round defensive picks haven’t shown up at all!!!

by spencercole2 on Jan 28, 2009 11:06 AM CST reply actions

Stats
Its crazy how everyone thinks the Draft is the only answer, after the 3rd round only 20% are still with your team after 3 seasons!!!

Our retention rate in the later rounds has been better than 20% the last few drafts…

Starting with the 2006 draft (3 seasons ago) we have drafted 14 players after the 3rd round…10 of them are still with the team

in 2006, we drafted 4 players after the 3rd round – 3 years later, 2 of them are still with the team (50%)

by PVChiefsfan on Jan 28, 2009 1:32 PM CST up reply actions

the retention rate of 20% is league wide, not just the Chiefs.

And doing some research these are post 3rd picks for the past 3 seasons before 2008:

2005
Boomer Grigsby
Alphonso Hodge
Will Svitek
Khari Long
James Killian
Jeremy Parquet

2006
Marcus Maxey
Tre Stallings
Jeff Webb
Jarrad Page

2007
Herbert Taylor
Kolby Smith
Justin Medlock
Michael Allen

Your telling me, you wouldn’t trade all but 2 of these picks (Jarrad Page & possibly Kolby Smith but when i think about him, I’d get rid of him too. He’s injury prone and not half the back Charles will be) to a team if your getting your franchise QB? No one outside of KC even knows who any of those players are except Page! All they are numbers on the roster. And cheap at that obviously since were 70 mil under! It’s people like you disgust me because they don’t know what it takes to win. NOT ONE OF THOSE PLAYERS DRAFTED AFTER THE 3RD ROUND WILL EVER BRING A TEAM TO A SUPER BOWL!!! only Page helps, but he can’t bring a team to the super bowl. Leinart CAN!

Oh and btw if you want to be technical about the 3 years, which would be 2005 season (since 2009’s roster isn’t even close to done), out of the 6 drafted after the 3rd round, ZERO are still with the team. If my math is correct, that’s 0-worse than the leage average by 20!!!!!!

By again diansaur

I am refering to a very veteran guy that has proven his ability to be a stout and dependable #2, that no longer has the moves to be a solid #1. In other words, a teacher for Thigpen and whoever else we draft.

Leinhart and Young don’t fit that mold.

by Texas Chief on Jan 28, 2009 5:37 PM CST up reply actions

And where

in the hell did everyone get the idea that Thigpen 100% positively CANNOT play QB from a pocket?

Games 1-6 we used QB’s # 1-5 and 1, 2 and 4 ended up injured.
Our O-Line could not make a “pocket” for a QB to stand in if their own lives depended on it, AND Thigpen is mobile and has the ability to scramble away.

SO: Gailey designed an offensive system that gave teh QB a “snowballs chance in hell” of being successful while scrambling out of the shotgun. Gailey KNEW no matter what QB you put in there was no “pocket” for them to step up into, so the guy with legs was chosen to “run for his life” the rest of the season. They were nice enough to play out of a 1/2 shotgun (pistol, whatever you wanna call it) so Thigy had more than 1.1 seconds to read the blitz package and scramble around trying NOT TO DIE.

I think everyone is being completely unfair by saying Thigpen can never develop into a pocket passer. It was his first damn time on the field as a starter, and the first time he held a roster spot for a whole season. For all intents and purposes it was his “rookie” outing as a QB. The coach chose to design an O such that KC didn’t end up with its own “Quarterbacks Ward” at mercy hospital in downtown KC.

3-4th round senior QB (to compete with Thigpen) and an aging dinasuar aka wise old veteran to help them BOTH along.

I agree with most of your reasoning as to why Gailey put the offense that he did in, but Thigpen is not a pocket passer and never has been. At Coastal Carolina he ran the spread too. that’s the kind of player he is. It’s like saying Chase Daniels is a pocket passer!?!
