Around SBN: Ellenberger vs. Sanchez Heats Up, Hughes Talks Retirement

New St. Louis Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo hired three coaches for his staff Monday, including Dick Curl as his assistant head coach/quarterbacks coach.

Curl comes to St. Louis from Kansas City, where he served three seasons as assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach under Herm Edwards. He is a 46-year coaching veteran.

The Day Herm Edwards didn't get his team ready to beat the Raiders at Arrowhead is the day he kissed his job goodbye.

Wow!

This is good news! Makes you wonder if we are not seeing something that Spagnuolo is. Maybe he thought he was the main reason that Thigpen did as good as he did when he became the starter.

If you polish a turd, its still a turd

We need a future defensive leader, his name is James Laurinaitis and he can be selected in round 1 of the upcoming Draft.

Ok already, if you don't agree with what I am saying, just don't email my mom again. She beat the crap out of me with my keyboard!

the trick is

you have to glaze it first… like fine pottery

by Ochophosphate on Jan 27, 2009 1:31 AM CST up reply actions

Heh

Oddly enough, I saw a clip on the Mythbusters site, where they did indeed polish dung into shiny spheres – and without glazing them, either. nothing but the poop, a little water, time & technique.

Go fig.

If the O-line isn't built up, a rookie QB is gonna look bad next season. If the O-line is a lot better, Thigpen will win more next season.

Maybe

If I could make a thousand in the 10 minutes it took to watch the webisode, you’d be right

OTOH, I learned about the Japanese pasttime of polishing dirt spheres – ain’t no worse than whitting.

I seldom count time I spend learning something utterly new as “Wasted”.

Still, Jamie & Adam are /way/ overpaid to do that show… ;-)

Hopefully

If the Chiefs are looking to keep Chan Gailey as the OC they’ll keep Eric Price around as well. He’s had some success as a QB coach and his area of responsibility last year was productive.

Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

Neither will Mike Shanahan.

That Was Sweet

I was hoping the Royals were going to realize how stupid it would be to nickel and dime Grienke through the arbitration years and then walk in free agency.

When you’re a team with less resources, the key to getting value is to do what the Indians did back in the ‘90s. Identify your core talent early in their career. Overpay for them somewhat with a long-term deal when they’ve still got 2-3 arbitration years remaining. That way you have a big enough sample size to see what you’ve got with the player but you can avoid all the bitterness that comes with the arbitration process. Plus, it’s not like you save much money with the player in arbitration anyway if he’s good and hires a good advocate.

Fortunately, I get the impression that Grienke wanted to stay in KC anyway. I get the idea that he kind of enjoys the low-key environment and if he went somewhere else for the big bucks he’d definitely be under the microscope.

Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

Neither will Mike Shanahan.

by UCrawford on Jan 26, 2009 4:49 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah

Listened to his presser from the plaza. He stated several times that he liked KC, wasn’t interested in a huge payday, loved KC and understood that management wants to win and that the Royals are moving in the right direction

"The Chiefs went through what, three quarterbacks? You even went through one of ours!!"

by SFCBurkhart on Jan 26, 2009 4:51 PM CST up reply actions

Big Paychecks = Big Pressure

And it’s much worse when you’re going to a new team. Hopefully Grienke’s big deal will work out better for the team than Mike Sweeney’s did. At least Grienke’s not the injury risk Sweeney was when he got his extension.

Although I felt bad for Sweeney…I think he really cared and worked hard, but once you start in with the back injuries like he did your career’s usually in trouble. Particularly if you’re being counted on to be a power guy. Same thing happened to Don Mattingly.

Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

I've Popped Over There A Few Times

Perhaps this will inspire me to shake off that Royals apathy I’ve had since 2005 or 2006 or so. I’ve gone to a few games and still keep up, but it’s tough for me to get excited about a team that still signs guys like Jose Guillen to big contracts and trades for players like Mike Jacobs (who is a horrible 1B for this team considering how awful he is at getting on-base) or gives 500 at-bats in a season to Ross Gload.

Dayton Moore’s nowhere near as bad as Herk Robinson and Allard Baird were, but he’s still working for one of the worst owners in professional sports and I just don’t know that the Royals are ever going to be that good so long as Glass owns them.

Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

Neither will Mike Shanahan.

by UCrawford on Jan 26, 2009 5:02 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed, but things are looking a little better this year...

I had that Royals Apathy thing for many years and finally shook it off last year… starting to get excited about some of the really young talent, and they have made a good decision here and there… I agree about the ownership, but taking the team salary budget out past $70 million this year really helps… we’ll see, hopefully the Royals will be at least competetive this year… I enjoyed watching some games last year for the first time in years…

our problems were, the right tools (players) with the wrong type sockets (coaches) and not enough juice to power them (headcoach).

We need a future defensive leader, his name is James Laurinaitis and he can be selected in round 1 of the upcoming Draft.

Ok already, if you don't agree with what I am saying, just don't email my mom again. She beat the crap out of me with my keyboard!

Herman – fired

So, What is next

I guess we have to wait at least until after the SB to find out about our HC. I wonder how much input Pioli will allow the new HC to have on the other coaches? I can’t even imagine who Pioli is looking at right now to fill these holes. I’m getting nervous.

Maybe later...

Just cuz I think they will interview more people than we realize….

They likely are interviewing people this week but we dont hear about it thanks to Pioli’s double-agent-ness

I think we will interview a number of staff from both Superbowl teams…Haley, Grimm and maybe even Bruce Arians….

I like Russ Grimm, myself…

The mothership has already removed him from the site

Here’s who is left:
Offensive Coordinator – Chan Gailey
Offensive Line – Bob Bicknell
Assistant Offensive Line – Joe D’Alessandris
Tight Ends – Jon Embree
Defensive Assistant – Michael Ketchum
Defensive Line – Tim Krumrie
Running Backs – Curtis Modkins
Offensive Assistant/Quality Control – Kevin Patullo
Wide Receivers – Eric Price
Assistant Strength and Conditioning – Brent Salazar
Strength and Conditioning – Cedric Smith
Manager of Football Operations/Player Development – Nate Wainwright
Defensive Quality Control Assistant – Daron Roberts

We need a future defensive leader, his name is James Laurinaitis and he can be selected in round 1 of the upcoming Draft.

I don't know much about them

and may be way off base, but I would like to see Bicknell get replaced at a minimum.

by TXChiefan on Jan 26, 2009 5:24 PM CST up reply actions

John Embree

How do I know if he’s any good when Tony G is the example? I think a bag of my hair would look like a good TE coach if it had Tony as a player.

On that note, we should drop Embree and let Tony be a player/coach like a mini Pete Rose… but without the gambling problem… or the lying problem…

Staff reform

If Chan Gaily is named Head Coach then I think he should promote Bicknell to OC. He was Offensive Coordinator in NFLE and won two World Bowls with Berlin while racking up lots of yardage. But Bicknell is a part of the Dick Curl posse, so I could see him going to the Rams with him. I dont like Eric Price as our OC. I dont even think he did a good job mentoring our WR’s. Curtis Modkins did an outstanding job I think. He worked with all of our young backs and they seemed to transition to the pro game nicely. Kevin Patullo is a nice young coaching prospect. He was a QB at South Florida. He also helped coach our QB’s the past couple of years….maybe he gets a shot at the QB coach. As far as Defensive I really like Tim Krumrie. I dont think he will stick around but I dont think Jared Allen is where he is at today without Krumrie. The poor defensive play is not on Krumrie as he didnt call the plays…I think our young guys need that veteran grizzled player getting in their faces and getting his point across.

Thanks for the run down

I had only read bad things about Bicknell in the early part of the season. I appreciate getting some of the facts and stand corrected. I’m not so sure about Price being a real good OC. He has done good things with receivers and (college) QBs in the past, but I am not sure about OC. Agree about Modkins and Krumrie as well. I think with the talent we had and the schemes we had, they did a good job. We just need a good agressive DC and a good coach to put it all together.

I think we need strength, and conditioning coaches

awful lot of injuries, course that could have been due to powder puff practices.

by Eric Allen on Jan 26, 2009 7:16 PM CST reply actions

Probably both

I really got sick of the players saying how great a coach Herm was and how much they loved playing for him while we were losing games and they were getting injuries that screamed “lack of time in practice and lack of time lifting”. Don’t get me wrong, I am not an amazing physical specimen myself, but I also don’t make millions or even hundreds of thousands of dollars for playing football.

Hopefully the next coach won’t be somebody the players love, but somebody they like playing for because he makes them work, and makes them win.

by Eric Allen on Jan 26, 2009 7:39 PM CST up reply actions

It does.

Funny how on a winning team, in the playoff hunt or playing in the playoffs, a lot of the guys toughing it out have or had the same injuries that sidelined our guys for a couple weeks. Perhaps some of the, “I like our coach, but I am not putting my future earning ability on the line for this shitty team” mentality?

by ryan_andersen98 on Jan 26, 2009 8:43 PM CST up reply actions

Short people need assistants too!!

Thank the heavens Curl’s gone!! But who is there left to hire??
Ooh maybe not as good as we thought…
But hey maybe the guy we get will know how to develop QB’s as opposed to go over basics with dinosaur QB’s
