Realistic FA wishlist.
Here is my list of potential free agent additions for the Kansas City Chiefs this off-season. I'm very much in favor of a switch to the 3-4 defense.
OFFENSE
Matt Birk C Minnesota Vikings
Antonio Bryant WR Tampa Bay Bucs
DEFENSE
Igor Olshansky DE San Diego Chargers
Shaun Cody DT Detroit Lions or Rocky Bernard DT Seattle Seahawks
Channing Crowder ILB Miami Dolphins
Karlos Dansby OLB Arizona Cardinals
Romeo Crennel D Coordinator

Antonio Bryant?
He did end his season with a bang!
My list yesterday was a fun way to look at some of the more decorated players in the NFL that we could see make their way to KC.
Romeo Crennel, definitely!
You’re right this is realistic, but I see bolder moves by Pioli. Idk why.
I’m interested in seeing what you think will happen with LJ and TG. What could we get for them?
Whoever said, 'It's not whether you win or lose that counts,' probably lost.

I'm betting that TG stays.
Who would want to trade for LJ? With his off the field issues, HUGE contract, and work load history, he might be a hard sell.

I wouldn't complain
This does look realistic, and do like Romeo Crennel for DC. I argree with above that we could expect at least one of the unrealistic, or surprise, guys to come on board, just because of Pioli.

I guess the old GM ruined me.
I have to see a big name guy here to believe it.

With that much money under the cap
I think it’s realistic to expect at least one big name to be signed.

Love
the D moves. Igor I think is a lock, our secondary did a respectable job last year, with Igor on the line to help stuff the run that instantly brings up the value of the D. Pair that with a guy like DJ and Curry from the draft coming off the edge, there’s the QB pressure that was lacking last year.
Although Dorsey would good in a 3-4. Igor takes on the the LG, Hali takes on the RG leaving Dorsey singled on the C with a LB coming from either side. On running plays all 3 stay put and clog the middle, on passing downs Dorsey now gets penetration up the gut. On stunts Igor take outs the the LG and shoves him into the C, Dorsey comes around and crushes the RB or QB, also gets monster support from 2 MLB in the 3-4, I think its a good move. Dorsey is athletic enough, Igor is strong enough, now we just need the LB’s to make it work.
I think a very realistic pick up is Vilma, with the stud LB’s in the draft I don’t see the Saints willing to keep him, if they do they owe the Jets and give up a draft pick as part of that trade.
DL: Hali, Dorsey, Olshanky
DB: DJ, Dansby, Vilma, Curry
I’m not the best X’s and O’s guy, but this sounds great to me, someone with more knowledge, let me know if I’m on the right track.

I like the list also, sounds reasonable to expect that we can make a play for Igor.
But I’m not sold on the Dorsey being a good fit for 3-4. The NG is usually a big fat guy who can tie up multiple blockers, and Dorsey’s design is for more for a player who plays along the line of scrimmage occasionally penetrating the O-line. Dorsey is what like 297 lbs. Jamaal Williams is like 348 lbs and Casey Hampton is 330 lbs.
Hali takes on the RG
In a 3-4 Hali would be more of an OLB than a DE (again he’s too small, needs to be more like 297lbs+), and Hali has never played as OLB. The scheme change would negate two of 1st round picks. I’m still hopeful that Hali still has something in him, and that last year’s struggle was just a jinx.

How about this guy for NG?

We need a future defensive leader, his name is James Laurinaitis and he can be selected in round 1 of the upcoming Draft.
Ok already, if you don't agree with what I am saying, just don't email my mom again. She beat the crap out of me with my keyboard!

The 34 is ok...
but Dorsey is not a NG. If you want to find a 4-3 DT that can transfer to a 3-4 NG there is only 1 thing you have to look for. What 4-3 DT can DOMINATE playing in a 3 technique. As we saw already this year, that’s not Dorsey. He struggled terribly as a 3 and didn’t start to come on until he slid out to the 4 and 5 technique later in the year.
Tamba Hali is nowhere close to a 34 DE. He simply doesn’t have the size or the moves. MAYBE he can be an ILB if he can improve his coverage skills. He’s not an OLB pass rusher either. He couldn’t rush the passer playing in Jarred Allen’s old spot, and he wont be any better doing it from 3-5 yards further back.
I don’t mind some of your picks, but we’re min. 2 seasons away from having the right personnel to run an effective 34. Keep in mind, all you are listing is starters and you can’t put together enough people to fill out the 11 man squad. What happens when one of them gets hurt, or tired, or arrested? — Tank slides back to MLB? Turk McBride plays NG? Donnie Edwards becomes your speed rush guy? Rocky Boiman plays Strongside DE?
Changing to a 34 can certainly be done. And there probably isn’t a better time than now to do it IF that is the plan for the future, but it’s not going to come together in one off season. We simply don’t have the right personnel for it.

Good points
If we were going to go 34 we can have Dorsey play one of the ends with Boone as NG, so we would still need to find another BIG guy to ultimately play NG longterm. Could probably have Tank and Turk alternate the other End position.
LB should be the biggest problem. If we sign Scott or Suggs they could cover one spot either inside or outside depends which one we would sign. DJ plays the other inside LB, then for sure were gonna have to draft Curry to cover the other outside LB position. We’d still be short one LB, hey maybe DeMorrio can play he outside or be able to back it up?
Maybe it can work, but we would need to walk away from the draft with at least 2 solid LB’s.

game changer
We need a game changer of a LB or DE. A player that would make the opposing offense game plan against, someone that will take up a double team on almost every snap. We’ve never had that since the departure of Neil Smith – once NS left, DT lost a step.
So now. do we know of such player in the 2009 draft? Can Pioli identify him if there was really one? Players of that caliber don’t show up every year in the draft. The most recent player with that sort of presence is playing with our foe, SD – Merriman.
Do we know of one in the FA market? It might not have to be a LB or DE, we can find the next Ronnie Lott – a hard hitting safety.
Still comes down to a little bit of luck … we will wait and see

Derrick Johnson...
…is that player. However, the defense is a few solid role players away from him realizing that potential. Before a single player can be a star, the whole defense needs to improve.
The defensive backfield is young but solid. The Chiefs need to stick with them, and I think you will see some amazing NFL players come out of that group. The defensive line needs help, not just with the pass rush, but with solid fundamental play that keep the blockers off of the linebackers. The linebacker corp is decent, but mainly because of Derrick Johnson. If the Chiefs get a couple of other solid, smart backers, the play their assignments each and every play, DJ will be freed up to wreak havoc.

FInally
A defensive thought I can agree with.
A change to a 34 would require the wholesale deconstruction of our D-unit.
However, fixing the worst parts (LB/DE) of our current D-unit and tossing in some creative blitz packages could be achieved in ONE offseason.

I disagree....
I think you underestimate first of all the re-education of an NFL player…They can learn the new system, look at the Jets…
The same example used for personnel…the Jets didnt have to do too much ridiculous stuff to change…
Wholesale deconstruction is a bit drastic

Safety
seems like an undersung part of the game. Teams with stand out studs at safety, Pittsburg, Indy, Baltimore, New England seem to have solid D. Each of those teams is a different animal when they don’t a monster in that position, just look at New England without Harrison.

Something I want to see
Is Peppers and Suggs in K.C. Dominating on defense. We need hard-core players that penatrate and mak the plays. To see a dominant defense again in K.C. would be the highlight of my life.
