MORT AND SCHEFTER DUEL OVER REPORTS OF SHANAHAN TO CHIEFS

Over at Pro Football Talk:

Posted by Mike Florio on January 23, 2009, 5:48 p.m. EST

This is getting pretty good.

Two of the top NFL information men in the business are engaged in a duel regarding the question of whether the Kansas City Chiefs are talking to former Broncos coach Mike Shanahan regarding the possibility of replacing former Chiefs coach Herm Edwards.

Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports that the Chiefs and Shanahan are closing in on a deal.

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reported on Thursday, and has reiterated today, that the Chiefs have made no contact with Shanahan.

“[U]nless people I have known for years are blatantly lying to me, Shanahan is not going to be the next head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs,” Schefter writes. “It is not happening. People can keep talking as if it is. But it is not. He will not be the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs in 2009.”

Pistols or swords, gentlemen?

I have a hard time

not believing Schefter. This is tough. He is so matter-of-fact and Mortensen has been flaky in the past. I hope he’s wrong but this doesn’t look good. Either way Pioli is getting us some much needed coverage all over ESPN.

Bah, It looks good either way

Herman Edwards is gone and the Chiefs get a fresh start.
I’ll take the Shanahan offense without the personel decisions, or I’ll take a 1st time HC with a clean slate.

I want to see these guys go one on one on the television and debate it. I want to see one or both stake their reputation …because they are.

...Wow...

ESPN is really…REALLY….losing respect on this deal…

They have already talked about Shanahan stuff with Tony and Brian…

AND IT IS NOT HAPPENING….

That is horrible to me…just admit that you and your info man were wrong…and move on…

Schefter and Shanny are besties, he would know

And he is reporting it as a fact…

ESPN News

Has interviewed Damon Huard by phone and discusses Shanahan also.
Huard spoke well of Shanahan, but gave no opnion if Shanahan was even speculated to be the new HC.
The coverage continues on ESPN NEWS network.

Newest tidbit ESPN News says 1 source has said Shanny was in negotions, but another source only says Hunt is “targeting” Shanahan. Their screen graphic saying Shanahan is targeted as HC has popped up 10-20 time in the last hour. As if comming back from commercial break at 6:32pm cst … that line of text was removed. It only lists Herms firing next to Herm’s picture in the graphic.

They appear to be backpedaling and preparing to soften the blow if they are proven wrong, but the reports continue.

At what point do you guys want me to stop calling ESPN

acting as the League source on the Shanahan rumors? :)

We need a future defensive leader, his name is James Laurinaitis and he can be selected in round 1 of the upcoming Draft.

Ok already, if you don't agree with what I am saying, just don't email my mom again. She beat the crap out of me with my keyboard!
