Around SBN: Jeremy Lin And How The Pac-12 Missed Him

Thank you Gunther

We all know it was time for Gunther Cunningham to go, but I wanted to say a little bit about what he has meant to the Chiefs. He was always passionate about the Chiefs and the game of football. He took some great players and made them even better (DT) and gave us some of the best defenses in the NFL. I think he just got a little too set in his ways and it was just time for a change. I do not look back on his time here with any ill feelings at all. I wish him well in his new job in Detroit and hope that he can regain his status as a top DC in the NFL. He deserves some respect even if he had a few bad years here. So once again Thank You Gunther and good luck!

This title deserves to sit at the top of the Rec’d posts. Gunther was a hard working guy who deserves another chance.

i changed my tune!

I was anti-gunther for a while, for the same reason I am anti-Cowher and anti-Tuna. I do not respect a drill-seargant style.

However, over the course of his time in KC, I came to really respect the man – and seeing how he changed personally toward his players really warmed me to him (was that on hard knocks?). I think a fresh start in Detroit may be just what the guy needs — and seems like a good choice by the Lions as well. Good luck Gun!

Chan Gailey is the only guy with the balls to draft Tebow as a HB/TE/2nd QB and actually USE him that way -- alongside a pure passer to help bring on the future of the NFL -- the ghey-ly named 'wildcat'. Remember Kordell (slash)? Gailey took the talent and made it work.

It sounds absurd but I swear if you saw my chalkboard....

It wasn't Gunther's fault

Yes, he wanted Kendrell Bell. However, he also wanted and nurtured DT. He loved DT, we all know that. Gunther and Marty treated DT like their own son. Gunther was very passionate about football and he was loyal to the HC, and to all of us in KC over the years. Gunther was right, he can’t operate in the cover 2 scheme. He has the blitz all of the time mentality. He didn’t have the personnel to fit his scheme either. I feel there was a rift between what Gunther wanted to do and what Herm wanted to do—-the players didn’t even know what to do, and the defense suffered terribly. I think with a clear direction from a HC (please Jesus I don’t pray much—but can Herm) and the DC being on the same page, and a few players—the defense will be solid.

DT = Derrick Thomas?

was drafted in 1989, before Gun came to the Chiefs

We need a future defensive leader, his name is James Laurinaitis and he can be selected in round 1 of the upcoming Draft.

Ok already, if you don't agree with what I am saying, just don't email my mom again. She beat the crap out of me with my keyboard!

He was HC in 1999

He was DC under Marty before that

He was DC in 1995

I guess “wanted” was a poor choice—he definitely nurtured him though.

Here's to Gunther

I respect him and do wish him the very best, unless his D plays against us. He didn’t deserve all of the trash talking that accused him of ineptitude. He is a tough, passionate guy, who really, really cared about this team.

Take care Gun.

Gunther

Will always be a Chief to me.
I will probably never see a better defense in a team I root for than the 1997 Chiefs.
He had to sublimate his personal defensive style & do what Herm wanted him to do the last 3 years. 99% of coaches would have left. Gunther stayed and did what he was told and took his lumps when it failed. He did it in a job most would not have taken after being HC. He did it because in his heart, he will always be a Chief.
In my heart too.
I wish him nothing but success.

Excellent post

Gunther is still a decent DC. He’s just been coaching a scheme that for one he’s not good with and two didn’t have the personnel. His profanity laced tirades will be missed.
Does anyone else feel like maybe Gun is/was in a situation similar to Greg Robinson as possibly a scapegoat?

Gunther is a good coordinator

I appreciate his service and love for KC and thei chiefs

We we’re actually improving decently on defense until this year under him..He was never comfortable with this defense tho

Agreed and agreed

Gunther is a passionate coach and has a distinct love for the game. Whether or not he was suffocating under Germ or that he just was in the wrong place with the wrong personell (or maybe that is the same) is irrelevant. He was appreciated for all he did for KC and for the Chiefs. And will be missed.

I mean where else do you get the scow, the verbal tirades and the yellow glasses?!

Nice Cheeze

I agree, Gunther did a lot for the Chiefs, even if it was a long time ago. I wish him well.

Thanks for the post, KCCheeze.

I appreciate you giving us all a place to send off Gunther. He wasn’t a particularly good Head Coach, proving once again that a great coordinator will not always make even a serviceable Head Coach; but he did some very good things for KC while running the defenses under Marty. I don’t really understand why Herm would bring in a guy for DC that doesn’t run a Tampa 2 if he is going to force him to anyway. I don’t like a Head Coach that thinks he should be running one side of the ball, either.

I think it could be pretty interesting to what becomes of Detroit over the next 2-3 years. I think Linehan and Gun are pretty good coordinator choices, and I would expect Gun and Schwartz to see more eye-to-eye.

Good luck coach Cunningham. I wish you the best of luck.
