Chiefs Deny Lions Permission To Interview Gunther Cunningham
In what can only be described as a rather bizarre move by the Chiefs, the team has apparently denied the Detroit Lions permission to interview Gunther Cunningham for their opening at defensive coordinator, according to MLive reporter Tom Kowalski.
According to a league source, the Lions were initially refused permission to talk to Kansas City defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham about taking the same position with Detroit.
The Chiefs might be in a transition period with new general manager Scott Pioli deciding the fate of head coach Herm Edwards. According to the source, the Lions are waiting to see if the Chiefs will eventually grant Cunningham permission to talk to the Lions.
I think it's safe to say that for quite a few fans on this board the departure of Gunther Cunningham (either to Detroit or by way of firing) was considered a foregone conclusion. Gunther and Herm haven't appeared to be a particularly productive pairing for their three year run, and one or the other was widely considered likely to take the blame for the Chiefs fielding one of the worst defenses in league history in 2008 by losing their job. Now it appears that the Chiefs haven't yet decided if anyone's to take the blame.
Got to say that this is a puzzler. If Gunther and Herm really aren't able to work together effectively, is this move indicative that the Chiefs think the problems were more Herm's responsibility? Or is it a sign that the Chiefs think Herm and Gunther can work these problems out so that both might be coming back? Or is it a sign that the Chiefs still haven't gotten around to evaluating their staff's performance yet? It's certainly not being done with worries about Gunther coming back to bite us in 2009 in mind...the Chiefs play the NFC East next year so Detroit's not on tap for another season.
Very strange signals coming from Arrowhead Drive...and I can't help but wonder if we'll be seeing something similar in regards to Chan Gailey's reported job interview in Tampa Bay.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Arrowhead Pride's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Arrowhead Pride writers or editors.

Yes Indeed
If only I hadn’t gone through to double spell-check, I’d have beaten Chris by a minute. :)
Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.
You found that quick
What news aggregator do you use for the Chiefs? Google alerts? Random Google News searches?
And here I thought I was ahead of the curve…
None Of The Above
Got it off of Rotoworld. I’m just a very fast typist and I used to work a job where I had to be able to put out a report of this length and get it released within a few minutes.
Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.
Ah, Rotoworld
Always pretty darn reliable.

They're Really Fast At Getting Their Stuff Out Too
Guess it’s easier when it’s your fulltime job.
Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.
Yeah
I stumble across Rotoworld not and again but always forget how good they are at gathering news.

You know what this means UC, the new Head Coach of the Kansas City Chiefs is...
Gunther Cunningham!!!!
It makes total sense… Gunther was never really given a chance before, with King Carl in the background running everything, it’s obvious that Pioli has seen in Gunther what we all have, he’s the HC of the future!
Careful...
Thems fightin’ words. Ive seen men killed for less than this.
just keep matriculating the ball down the field !
Now now, you're the one who posted this wonderful tidbit that caused me to see the light...
I can see it now, Gun unleashed in all his glory, nothing holding him back, 5 consecutive SB wins!
LOL…
If herm continues to be our head coach
I’ll seriously contemplate it if he remains the coach long term..I’m not kidding either..Picture herm in KC for the next 10 years and tell me how you feel about that..I’m as die hard as they come, when the chiefs lose, my day is ruined..But I refuse to follow Herm Edwards..

Why would Detroit be interested?
The Cheifs had the second-worst defense in the league in 2008. Why would anybody want Gunther? Why would the Chiefs want to keep him?
Schwartz and Cunningham worked together
I guess he sees something in him that Gunther didn’t demonstrate last year in KC.

You're being too critical
Gunther has been a very successful D Coordinator. 2008 was a completely strange year for the entire team. The 3 years prior, his D on the Chiefs showed steady improvement.
How can you completely throw him under the bus? I believe in Gunther’s philosophy and ability, but the assistants and more than likely the differences with Herm’s philosophy didn’t mix. I believe that just like the Offense changed it’s style under Chan, that they will evaluate the failure of 2008 and we will see a much different and improved D in ’09.
Was Detroit the worst defense?
If they were then the coach of the second worst defense would be an upgrade, hahaha.

Bizarre Move by the Chiefs...
"In what can only be described as a rather bizarre move by the Chiefs
Well perhaps Crawford it is only bizarre because it does not fit in with your idea of how the chiefs should be run….or perhaps it is simply regression to the mean…perhaps all the success that PIoli Had will now regress back the mean and he will now be a failure?….I can not find your post where you tried to use regression to the mean as another way to prove your points..but i did get a good laugh out of it because it is not that simple (see below) ….
the main point being that regression to the mean may not be the only variable going on here..and in fact many do rise above this and that is why it is hard to pigeon hole human beings with this factor….Human motivation can indeed rise above this phenomena. IN fact using regression to the mean, a case could made to keep Herm since he has not any where else to go but up!
The better question to me is why do so many people rise above these kinds of statistical analysis? I think you can all It human motivation….Perhaps it is hard to be motivated for so many years in a row….and that may explain why so many atheletes seem to lose their abilities after they are given a huge contract. Look at how many people said the Cardinals quarterback was washed up….and so it did appear for a few years….now look at Him? Perhaps Pioli knows this and he is basing his decision on the human factor which is so hard to quantify. …….so I watch this whole drama unfold with a lot of amusment as Pioli seems to be doing his own thing rather than adhering to the wisdom esposed by Crawford and many others who now are willing to start to attack Pioli….personally I think Pioli has a much better track record since he has shown the ability to rise above statistical aberations like regression to the mean….
the following is from nation master…notice that regression to the mean would predict that Carmello Anthony in his 2006 season his scoring average would fall….this did not happen because his 2006 was way better than his rookie season., and his scoring average rose again in 2007 (again negating regression to the mean)..again showing that regression to the mean is a very medocre predictor of individual preformance especially with certain atheletes and for that matter GM’s and Coaches….
Statistical analysts have long recognized the effect of regression to the mean in sports; they even have a special name for it: the “Sophomore Slump.” For example, Carmelo Anthony of the NBA’s Denver Nuggets had an outstanding rookie season in 2004. It was so outstanding, in fact, that he couldn’t possibly be expected to repeat it: in 2005, Anthony’s numbers had slightly dropped from his torrid rookie season. The reasons for the “sophomore slump” abound, as sports are all about adjustment and counter-adjustment, but luck-based excellence as a rookie is as good a reason as any. Of course, not just “sophomores” experience regression to the mean. Any athlete who posts a significant outlier, whether as a rookie (young players are universally not as good as those in their prime seasons), or particularly after their prime years (for most sports, the mid to late twenties), can be expected to perform more in line with their established standards of performance. The trick for sports executives, then, is to determine whether or not a player’s play in the previous season was indeed an outlier, or if the player has established a new level of play. However, this is not easy. Melvin Mora of the Baltimore Orioles put up a season in 2003, at age 31, that was so far away from his performance in prior seasons that analysts assumed it had to be an outlier… but in 2004, Mora was even better. Mora, then, had truly established a new level of production, though he will likely regress to his more reasonable 2003 numbers in 2005. . …
Actually
It was bizarre because the Chiefs had previous told all of their assistant coaches and coordinators after the season that they were free to look for other jobs, so blocking the Detroit Lions (who are neither a divisional rival nor a 2009 opponent) from talking to Gunther made no sense.
Sorry if you haven’t been paying attention…maybe instead of trying to insult me you should just focus on the football part of the story.
Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.
