Around SBN: Are The Orioles Bad Or Unlucky With Their Young Pitching?

NBC Sports analyst Cris Collinsworth expects Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator Todd Haley to become the Chiefs’ next head coach.

It’s becoming more apparent that the Chiefs are waiting until after the Super Bowl to identify their next head coach _ or why not send Herm Edwards to the Senior Bowl and let him replace assistants who are fleeing?

I'd take it

Especially with decent drafting and a competent d-coordinator, both of which I’d expect Pioli to ensure.

I do love me some coaching speculation…

I could see it happening

I wouldnt mind an offensive minded HC. Weve had a defensive minded one for 3 years and our D ranked 30th this season. Can’t be anyworse, and Arizona’s offense is fun to watch! :)

Collinsworth's Speculating

But he makes a lot of good points and I like how his mind is working.

Damn it, now I have to go back to my offseason in Madden and fire Jim Schwartz so I can hire Todd Haley. And Schwartz is only in the first year of his contract. :)

Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

Well

I did fire Herm, Gunther and Priefer after they won the Super Bowl in my franchise’s first season so I could hire Schwartz.

I kept Gailey though…the offense was working out just fine for me, even if I couldn’t get Thigpen’s completion percentage out of the mid 50s. He’s made quite the leap in accuracy for his second year though and he and the Brandons are getting the lion’s share of training time to start the season. That should give me a young QB with a 91 accuracy rating and two young shutdown CBs by week 5. :)

I Don't Think He Was An Option

I was thinking about Rex Ryan and Steve Spagnuolo too, but Schwartz seemed to be the best fit for what I needed. He gave a bump to my linebacking corps’ performance and I got Jerry Gray to run the defense (because he improved the DBs). My d-line’s got Glenn Dorsey, Sedrick Ellis, Jared Allen and some speed rusher from Michigan (whose name I forget) that I drafted in the 2nd round so I’ve got a dominant defense and a stellar offense featuring Thigpen, Bowe, Charles Johnson, Marshawn Lynch and a killer o-line. :)

Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

So no one else traded Brodie and a 2nd for Carr and a 1st and immediately went undefeated?

Actually

I deleted all of my franchises so I could start over with the Chiefs’ end of season roster (which gave me Connor Barth and Mike Cox instead of Nick Novak and Chris Manderino and where Flowers and Carr were actually good instead of Carr being a complete scrub with a sub-70 rating). My team went undefeated and won the Super Bowl in a squeaker against the Eagles, immediately after which I fired Herm, Gunther and Priefer.

I might have had to keep him on for one Super Bowl, but Herm’s not riding my coattails to a dynasty. :)

That's so funny!

I’m playing an older year Madden and I won a SB and then fired Mike Solari… who STILL didn’t get hired by anyone else. And it showed he was the top ranked offensive guy and only one with a Super Bowl. Do they know he stinks too?

Ha, UC...

I did the same thing exactly….But I hired Billick and Dick LeBeau

by woodman212 on Jan 20, 2009 5:36 PM CST up reply actions

I Considered Billick

But I wanted to keep Gailey and they were both “improves QB performance” guys. So I went with the guy who made my linebackers better and a DC who upped my DBs’ performance.

Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

Thought About Snagging Brian Schottenheimer for HC

But he was a QB guy too. Not sure what Todd Haley improves.

Oh myyyyyy........

but have you seen the cheerleaders for ‘09-10’? Maybe Detroit would be interested in them too? :-b

by ChiefMedic on Jan 21, 2009 10:48 AM CST up reply actions

and next will be the return of

WARPAINT!

We need a future defensive leader, his name is James Laurinaitis and he can be selected in round 1 of the upcoming Draft.

Ok already, if you don't agree with what I am saying, just don't email my mom again. She beat the crap out of me with my keyboard!

Roll like Vince Papale

How about we just have an “open casting call for HC” and toss the winner under the headset. I’m not terribly impressed with the nepotism and incestuous nature of the NFL. I’m not too impressed with anyone outside of Holmgren, Cowher, or Shanahan. HC is a first, but damn, we need players.

Collinsworth

So I thought this was about Collinsworth and talking about the next chiefs coach….. Since when is this for Madden video games talk…..?

I think

everyone is getting delerious from being Chiefs news deprived. All of the speculation is like some psycadellic drug and it’s causing everyone at AP to revert intellectually to knucklehead status. Everyone’s completely engaged in the current circumstances but there’s nothing of substance to talk about. Heheh. Tight lips at arrowhead did this to them!

That’s pure speculation, of course!!! :P

Edwards

I’m not for grabbing just any new name or face that comes up. Edwards had his faults, but possibly with a stronger staff around him, he can improve just like the players do at their positions. He is a very positive influence and motivator to the players. Other players around the league respect him. Yes, he screwed up in many areas, but I think with Pioli working with him and Hunt behind the progression of the team, we may actually be smart to keep Herm.

I don’t believe in the “lame duck” talk at all. These guys want to win, and he has to prove himself in the last year of his contract, or he will go down in history as a failure. He would be one of the hardest working coaches out there to prevent that. I think Pioli will work to get the right mix of coaches and players to turn this team completely around.

If he can’t produce next season, then the door is open for Shanahan, Cowher, or someone else that has shown his worth. Personally, I’m not impressed with Haley.

by TXChiefan on Jan 20, 2009 10:10 PM CST reply actions

I partially agree

I do believe in the lame-duck concept. It’s been proven time and time again in sports, politics and in big business. I do however believe that there are measures that can be taken to avoid this scenario. I’m in no way advocating Herm Edwards, but if the team keeps him, the better be damn good and sure that they will keep him beyond the single remaining year of his contract.

That being said, I appreciate your points about staffing him correctly. The players do like him and with a decent staff, I think he would do significantly better. My beef with this is that if there is a better prospect, and I believe there is, we should go in that direction with everything we have at our disposal to bring it to fruition.

by Buck'O on Jan 20, 2009 10:22 PM CST up reply actions

I'm with you there

I am an advocate to keep Herm for his final year….IF we can build around him, but if there is a great candidate out there, then we should grab him now. I’m not a proponent of just getting another retread coach just fired from another team just because of the popular name, because it will be the same old problem, unless you have the appropriate supporting staff. I’d rather keep who we have and build success around him.

Now, if a new young and upcoming coaching candidate is out there that has been waiting for the right team at the right time, and Piolo sees the potential, then now is the time and I’d support it.
