Gunther to Detroit?

It was reported last night on Fox Sports Radio that Jim Shwartz is interested in pursing Gunther Cunningham for his Defensive Coordinator.  This makes sense because Gunther was a line coach for the Titans before he came back to KC 5 years ago.  Schwartz had been the DC for the Titans for 8 years, so he was there at the same time Gunther was working for the Titans.

What does this mean for KC, we have now lost 4 coaches from our staff.  If Herm stays they'll have to hire several coaching positions.

Is this good or bad for KC?

Actually

I’ve heard Gunther to Tennessee as well.

They can have him.

Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

And

The assistant coaches leaving are a sign that Herm’s leaving. Unless they’re planning to extend him they’re going to have a tough time finding good assistant coaches and attracting good free agents to come and play for a likely one-and-done coach.

Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

Yup

No assistant worth his salt is going to come in here under a lame-duck HC. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a new HC announce next week and at the same time Herm gets the pink slip.

again

If Pioli chooses to keep Herm, why are we automatically going to suck next year?

we could improve, and Herm could receive an extension – thus no lame-duck HC.

by PVChiefsfan on Jan 16, 2009 12:56 PM CST up reply actions

He's gone either way

I’m telling you, if Herm does stay, there is no way they will let Gun stay. They HAVE to do something about the defense – if it’s not the HC, then it’s got to be the DC. Either way he’s gonna go.

If Gunther gets another job offer, anywhere

I suggest he take it

My Theory

We are losing coaches on the defensive side of the ball, but so far no one from the offensive side of the ball has left. What if Pioli is going to fire Herm and name Gailey interim coach with the condition that based on his performance he would be considered for the HC position in 2010.

by ksjhwk on Jan 16, 2009 11:03 AM CST reply actions

They Can't Have That Agreement In Place

At least not officially. Per the Rooney rule if they fire Herm they must interview at least one minority candidate for that position.

Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

by UCrawford on Jan 16, 2009 11:18 AM CST up reply actions

UC there's a new GM in place

That GM will interview the current HC who happens to be a minority candidate ergo the rule has been adhered to.
Some on 810 were interpreting that since Pioli mentioned during the conference that he inteended to sit down and speak to Herm about the HC position.

Bill Parcell’s: "You are what your record says you are."

Thigpen WILL NOT be the Chiefs starting QB next year IMO. He can compete for the job and should be 2nd or 3rd string.

Someone posted

An Adam Schefter article that said that interviewing Herm does not count as interviewing a minority candidate since he’s the current HC.

Nope

Adam Schefter reported this morning that incumbents do not satisfy the Rooney Rule requirement.

Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

by UCrawford on Jan 16, 2009 11:23 AM CST up reply actions

Np...than 810 interpreted it incorrectly...no suprise.

Question

Under the Rooney rule, would Pioli sitting down and talking to Herm fullfil that requirement or does it not because he’s the incumbent HC?

They can have him i never liked Gun the defense is terrible, the linebackers are worse under his coaching, and the only part that was good (secondary) is Herm’s specialty.

Good bye Gunther

This is a good thing. I think Gunther could be a good defensive coordinator, but I think he had worn out his welcome here and the players had tuned him out.

Gunther may have coordinated my two all time favorite Chiefs defenses.

1995 and 1997. But that was a long time ago, with very different personnel. It’s easy to be agressive when you have Hasty and Carter playing bump and run and DT and Neil Smith (in 95 anyway) rushing the passer while big Dan S. clogs the middle.

His 2nd term as DC never felt right. He had an awkward stint as HC. You can’t go home again. The personnel has been terrible. It’s time to start fresh with a new approach to defense and a new defensive coaching staff.

I’ll always love the guy. He loves the Chiefs. But it’s time.

Also

Wasn’t Shotty the head coach then

by black mamba on Jan 16, 2009 11:25 AM CST up reply actions

Yup. Good Shotty (89-97) version.

Even though there was no post-season success, you youngsters don’t realize what an incredible 9 seasons that was. Arrowhead was the most feared road trip in the AFC, bar none.

It all imploded in 1998, and it’s never been the same since. 2003 was fun for awhile, and in 2005 there were glimpses, but it’s never been the same for 10 years.

by DonnyDonovan on Jan 16, 2009 11:28 AM CST reply actions

Well I'd say

Arrowhead has always been perhaps the toughest place to play in the NFL except for the last two years…

And the postseason!

2-3!

HELL YES its good

if things keep up, we aint gonna have to fire nobody. Makes us look better now and when next seasons over, because those teams hiring our guys will suck!

We need a future defensive leader, his name is James Laurinaitis and he can be selected in round 1 of the upcoming Draft.

Gunther isn't a bad

coordinator..He’s had success before..We have a lack of talent on the defense which is partly his and herm’s fault..They have not picked up any talented free agents for the D what so ever..Again Gunther deserves the blame, but I think it’s unfair to label gunther a bad coordinator when back in 1995 and 97 his d squad was the best in the league..A lot of it depends on the talent you have..

by CALIFAN1986 on Jan 16, 2009 12:21 PM CST reply actions

I have resigned myself to being all for Gun to prove he still has it

as long as it’s with another team in the NFC

We need a future defensive leader, his name is James Laurinaitis and he can be selected in round 1 of the upcoming Draft.

Ok already, if you don't agree with what I am saying, just don't email my mom again. She beat the crap out of me with my keyboard!

Gun had success

running what Bill Cowher started but his defenses got progressively worse year after year !
