There are a few ways to check out Scott Pioli's first press conference as the Kansas City Chiefs' GM. The press conference is scheduled to begin at 5 PM CDT.
The local KC Fox affiliate should have a live video feed of the event. KSHB is another possibility for live video.
610 Sports always carries press conferences live.
810 Sports is another local radio option to hear it.

Unless
The Chiefs decide to nix live audio like they did for Peterson’s send-off. Although that may have just been Peterson’s final fuck-you.

How do you have a press conference planned days or weeks in advance and not, you know, check that out first.

According To The Star
It wasn’t a technical issue…the Chiefs said no on the live feed for Peterson. I suspect so they could vet it first in case things got too personal.

Let’s see, big the BMOC and get your pick of the litter of hot Oklahoma chicks while beating up on Iowa State and Baylor.

Pioli: I’ve known Herm for a long time. I’ve got a lot of respect for Herm.
Herm Edwards is Clark Hunt's guy. Herm and Carl forced Clark to choose between their differing visions on how to rebuild the Chiefs, and we all see who got their walking papers. Herm's going to be walking the sidelines at Arrowhead in 2009, and possibly even beyond, no matter who the new General Manager is.

If Herm (or anyone else) gets fired, he deserves to hear it firsthand, not at a press conference.
And no, I don’t think there’s a chance in hell Herm’s back…Pioli will take a look at the record, meet with Herm, wish him well, set him on his way, then let the press know. That’s just the way professional organizations are supposed to handle things.

I Think That's Right
If how the Patriots handled things are indicative of Pioli’s temperament, I get the impression that he’ll either give pretty honest answer in response to a question or no answer at all. Peterson always came off like he was trying to sell you a used car with bald tires and a bad alternator and that you should be happy he chose you to be his customer.

There's no question Herm is out
There’s no other way it could be.
I’m as big a Herm supporter as anyone, but right now Pioli is the Golden Child of the NFL, a man that has as much prestige and as good a reputation for being a winner as anyone in a front office position. Coaches and Free Agents will give special consideration to a team run by Pioli this year. The time to bring in talented coaches and free agents is NOW.
If the Chiefs have a losing season again in 2009, no matter whether it is Herm or anyone else, that sheen is going to be tarnished a bit beyond its current blinding brilliance and the premiere coaching candidates may not lean as heavily towards him as they would this year.

"The time to bring in talented coaches and free agents is NOW."
Really? I hope you’ve informed Mr. Pioli that he has no choice in the matter. Presumably you’ve also provided him with a list of HC prospects that you’ve researched in such detail that you know they will all work very well with him, and that he can commit to a 3-5 year contract with them without bothering to interview anyone.
Nice to know that you’ll not tolerate anything less than an 8-8 season from Pioli in ‘09, at that. I’m srprised tha you didn’t demand that he’d win a Super Bowl in ’10, as well.
Personally, I figure to let the man grow into the job in ‘09, but you’re welcome to your own opinion.
If the O-line isn't built up, a rookie QB is gonna look bad next season. If the O-line is a lot better, Thigpen will look better next season.

That came off more arrogant than intended
What I meant was that I am one of the most patient fans on these boards and have been a big supporter of Herm all along.
But right now Pioli has some PR mojo going because he’s the hottest GM out there and free agents and coaches are going to gravitate towards that.
But if they wait a year and the Chiefs go 4-12 again, that’s going to be three losing seasons in a row, which officially qualifies as a habit of losing, and some of the sheen on Pioli is going to be tarnished.
He needs to strike while the irons hot and bring in all the talent he can while he’s the NFLs Golden Child.

Reputations Disappear Fast In The NFL
Anyone who’s been paying attention to what happened to Jason Garrett’s rep over the last year should realize that.
Pioli’s never going to have a better opportunity to put his plans in place than he will this offseason, because his credibility will likely not be as high unless he gets the Chiefs into the playoffs next year. This is the year he’ll have his pick of candidates so he’s best served by grabbing the person he wants now.
Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

Dude, read /my/ posts, then
If you had, you’d know that I’m not worshipping at the altar of Herm. I’ve ripped him, and in a more more thoughtful manner than the bulk of the crap I see posted here: “Herm sucked for the Jets”, for example. Guess what? Mangini sucked for the Jets, too. “Herm Sucked under Perterson”. Like anyone olse has succeeded under CP? I done laid it out.
My point is, that this is about far more than pleasing fans, r polishing reps. Pioli, IMO, is here to build a Winner. Every ove he’s gonna make will be in aid of that goal. He won’t get there by mindlessly sh1t-canning Herm to please us idiots. He’s going to evaluate Herm, and see what he’s got to work with. Meanwhile, he’s gonna survey the available talent. If The Hire isn’t there, he’s gonna probably do the smart thing, and string Herm along until he gets the Right guy. If Coach Right is out there, then Herm’s interview is a courtesy call, and no more. Likewise if he decides after the interview that he can’t work with Herm (doubt it – Herm managed to suck up and soldier for 2 years of Carl, before he went over Carl’s head. Herm can do one more year without blinking.)
But if you think my defense was of Herm, you’re delusional. I’m defending Pioli: he’s the guy, now. Presumably, he knows what he’s doing, and I’m not gonna hang Herm as a fan deal-breaker over his head. I don’t know you? I know you better than /you/ know Pioli.
If Pioli’s a weak sister who hid underBelichick’s skirts, or he’s the next Carl, or he’s gonna guide us to the OPromised Land, we won’t know until 2010 at the earliest, whoever’s the HC next year.
“The first thing in building a team is that it’s not necessarily the best 53 players, it’s the right 53 players,” he said.
“We’re going to build a big, strong, fast, tough, disciplined football team. We’re going to start from the ground up and build a foundation and move ahead and touch every part of the football operation. The patience I know Clark has told me he’s going to show is going to be rewarded.”
The /right/ 53 players. You tink he’s not going to apply the same philosophy to his coaches? If not, why not?
I refuse to believe that a man with that mindset is going to dump Herm and commit to 3-4 years of “best available”, rather than finding the right fit at HC. Grabbing a somewhat-better HC would be wortse for Pioli than keeping Herm one more season and extending the search. Money aside, he /can’t/ go through HCs like fresh undies. Can’t. The next HC needs to know he’s got the backing of the GM. If Pioli can’t find the fit, then another year of Herm will go a long ways to say “Hey, I’ll back you if things don’t go as planned”.
UC, you can help out DJ here: Post your list of potential (acutally /hireable/, not pie-in-the-sky) HC canidates that Pioli knows, trusts, believes in, and can put in place fast enough to make 09 work. (Yes, that’s loaded, since neither you nor DJ (nr I) know what’s in his head.)
But as far as reputations go, I can’t think of a better way for a newbie like Pioli to sculle his own than to start burning through Head Coaches the way Al Davis does – and look at what it’s done for Al. After Herm, Pioli’s stuck for the bulk of the next contract. He’s gotta get it right, or his rep is toast. The second-worst thing he could do to himself is to be the /next/ Carl Peterson: /almost/ good enough to win in the postseason.
But to repeat myself: if he’s got Coach Right on tap, and can get him here fast, then bye-bye, Herm. Been real, been fun, but it ain’t been real fun.
And I won’t shed a tear.
If the O-line isn't built up, a rookie QB is gonna look bad next season. If the O-line is a lot better, Thigpen will look better next season.
A rookie QB drafted at #3 has less than a %5 chance of starting Game one of '09. Slotting holdouts will prevent him from competing with Thigpen.

After Watching The Full Interview
I think there’s going to be a lot of changes here…I seriously doubt McIntosh will be our right tackle next season and I think Larry Johnson’s going to get shopped. He put a lot of emphasis on players buying into the “culture” and that ain’t LJ…and good riddance as far as I’m concerned.

I think there will be more changes than we can conceive right now
The Chiefs have been run a certain way for 20 years by Peterson and that method was largely based on his attention being divided by all his duties.
Whereas Peterson more or less let his coaches pick their own assistants and the majority of the time went with their preferrences in the draft, I get the sense that may not be the case with Pioli. I’m sure he will take into consideration assistants that his new head coaches work well with, but I get the feeling that if he gets a major defensive minded head coach like Rex Ryan, he’s not going to, for example, let him bring the Ravens TE coach to KC to be the Offensive Coordinator just because thats who Ryan would want.
I think we will see Pioli taking a much more active hand in managing coaches and coordinators than Peterson ever did. Same with drafts. I think we will see Pioli choosing players that he thinks will be best for the Chiefs long run in the draft over for example Peterson heavily leaning towards his coaches opinions of players they need for their current team.

I Don't Get The Impression That Pioli Will Micromanage The Coach
He talked a lot about “roles” and everyone having their place and seemed to push the coach being the face of the franchise. I suspect he just wants the ability to fire assistant coaches if need be but he’s probably not going to make it a habit to usurp his head coach’s authority and dictate who he must hire…which is probably the best way to go about it. Frankly, Peterson should have usurped Vermeil’s authority and dumped Greg Robinson about a year before it happened, then maybe they could have won a playoff game with the 13-3 team.
Basically, yes…I think that your impression is about right. And I think you’re also right about what he intends to do with player evaluation and selection, and that this is probably the best course for the Chiefs. The GM’s role should be to scout and select the players so that the coach can work on gameplanning and training instead of worrying about the draft and free agency (which isn’t and shouldn’t be the coach’s role).
Overall, I was extremely impressed with both Hunt and Pioli at the press conference.

I don't think he will micromanage
But I think if he brings in a coach like Herm, that doesn’t have a strong network of assistants to bring with him that Pioli won’t just leave him pluck any college guys he can find out just to fill the staff. Pioli will actively be pursuing good qualified NFL candidates.

I Suspect That's Probably Right Too
Somehow, though, I suspect he’ll bring in a head coach with more contacts than Herm had. Herm’s primary attraction for Peterson appeared to be that he was someone Peterson was friends with…not so much because he was an impressive head coach. As I recall, Peterson didn’t even look at any other coaches, he just wanted a guy he knew personally and felt he could trust. Pioli strikes me as someone who’s going to look more heavily at the resume and make a hire based on qualification over personal friendship. Results-oriented, basically, which is a much needed direction for the Chiefs.

Clark just interviewed on 610 ...
(Or, admittedly, possibly 810. I was switching back and forth.)
And he said, in response to a question about how much control Pioli had, that he had complet control over the football side of the Chiefs EXCEPT for the decision on the head coach which would be a joint decision (presumably with Clark having Simon Cowell-like tie-breaking power).

Herm's Still Going Away
A GM candidate like Pioli is not going to take this job if he was anchored to the previous occupant’s decisions. He’s laying a foundation for a new team and that doesn’t include the previous regime’s coach in the final year of his contract. He’s not giving Herm a four or five year extension after his team’s performance for the last two seasons and if he doesn’t commit to the coach it will undermine the Chiefs’ forays into free agency (since players won’t want to sign for a lame duck coach who could be gone in a year).
Regardless of how you feel about Herm personally, there is no rational justification for bringing him back next year. The most common defense I’ve heard has basically been pity (“Herm didn’t have a chance”) and that’s not much of a plug for Herm’s ability to coach…it’s just a lament that he wasn’t luckier. Pioli’s goal is to compete for championships. Herm’s never shown himself to be that caliber of a coach, even in his good years with the Jets. He represents a huge liability for Pioli if he’s retained with very little chance of helping Pioli achieve his goals. He’ll get a day or two, Pioli will have the sitdown with him and he’ll be gone. The Chiefs are going to do the best they can not to humiliate the guy, because that’s just how Clark Hunt (and, apparently, Scott Pioli) does things, but the Chiefs aren’t going to keep Herm around just because they like him as a person…that’s how the last guy did things and he got pushed out.

Boomer and Carton were talking about this on WFAN this morning.
Carton (who likes to stir up trouble) states that given the pool of available coaches, it’s not a bad idea to keep Herm around. That no one was a lock at being better than Herm, and the Chiefs could see how he does next year, and have Shannahan (assuming he doesn’t want to coach next year despite rumors) or Cowher as possible replacements. Boomer also mentioned that Pioli and Cowher are friends.

Still Not Buying It
If they want a caretaker, they’d be better promoting Chan Gailey than keeping Herm. At least Gailey’s got contacts and has had some success as a head coach. And Gailey’s area of responsibility was pretty much the only part of last season’s team that went right.
There’s not much upside and a lot of downside to the new regime in keeping Herm. He’s a liability to them if he fails and not much of a boon to them if he succeeds. And keep in mind that he’d be a lame duck coach next season even if they did bring him back, which will cause issues with attracting the top free agent personnel this offseason. Pioli’s not going to give Herm four or five more years after the record he posted here and unless he’s willing to commit to Herm there’s no reason for him to keep Herm just to ride out the contract. This is the reason that most new GMs get rid of the old coaches when they come in…they don’t want their job to hinge on someone else’s hire unless they’re absolutely convinced that person can win. So they’ll go with Spagnuolo or Schwartz or appoint a caretaker if they want to go for Shanahan or Cowher next year before they’ll keep Herm.

What planet are you on?
If they want a caretaker, they’d be better promoting Chan Gailey than keeping Herm. At least Gailey’s got contacts and has had some success as a head coach.
Making the playoffs in four of his first six years isn’t ‘some success as a head coach’ … ? Winning the AFC East in the midst of the New England Patriots ‘dynasty’ years isn’t ‘some success as a head coach’ … ?
Chan’s only two Bowl wins in the NCAA were the Humanitarian Bowl and the Champs Sports Bowl. He’s lost every other bowl game he’s been to and he’s never been to a BCS bowl.
Chan is a great offensive coordinator, but he hasn’t won an NFL Playoff game. Herm has. Two of them.
There was speculation — and, likely accurate speculation — as to who Pioli’s choices for Head Coach were. Both of those guys are unavailable.
Hunt likes Herm and made it clear that he’d prefer to keep Herm. Pioli’s a smart enough guy to figure out that it’s about finding the right guy. If his ‘right guy’ isn’t available, there’s no harm in giving the owner’s ‘right guy’ one more year.

The Planet Where We Don't Keep Making Excuses For Coaches Who Win Less Than A Third Of Their Games Over A Three Year Span
Planet “Put Up Or Shut Up” as it were.
Making the playoffs in four of his first six years isn’t ‘some success as a head coach’ … ?
When you combine that with a losing overall record at both of his jobs, then no…not really. Two playoff wins in eight years doesn’t really do it for me.
Winning the AFC East in the midst of the New England Patriots ‘dynasty’ years isn’t ‘some success as a head coach’ … ?
Neither does winning a your only division title in a three way tie at 9-7. Or having a season best of 10 wins. Or winning less than a third of your games over your last three years as a head coach.
Chan’s only two Bowl wins in the NCAA were the Humanitarian Bowl and the Champs Sports Bowl. He’s lost every other bowl game he’s been to and he’s never been to a BCS bowl.
And how many bowl games did Herm win or get to?
Nice apples-to-oranges comparison.
Chan is a great offensive coordinator, but he hasn’t won an NFL Playoff game. Herm has. Two of them.
Gailey’s also got a better winning percentage than Herm and just as many division titles in two years as a head coach as Herm’s won in eight.
There was speculation — and, likely accurate speculation — as to who Pioli’s choices for Head Coach were. Both of those guys are unavailable.
So what? Pioli’s not keeping Herm. And you’ve got the same insight into Pioli’s preferred hires and thought processes that I and 99.99999% of the people on this board do…none.
Hunt likes Herm and made it clear that he’d prefer to keep Herm.
He also didn’t say that Herm was definitely coming back next year, so apparently he doesn’t like him enough to guarantee him a job next season or to extend him.
Pioli’s a smart enough guy to figure out that it’s about finding the right guy.
Which is likely a guy who hasn’t lost more than 2/3 of his games the last three years.
If his ‘right guy’ isn’t available, there’s no harm in giving the owner’s ‘right guy’ one more year.
Unless, of course, your goal is to get the Chiefs back to winning as soon as possible and put butts in seats, in which case retaining a coach who’s won 6 games in the last two years who’s alienated a large portion of the fan base is probably a really bad idea for a GM looking to build credibility.

I still think it's likely Herm is gone,
but I thought I’d report what I’m hearing out here.
Personally, I’m ok either way. I think there are upsides to Herm, but the lame-duck thing concerns me, and I agree on the bit about an extension. As always, what do I know? I said there was no way in hell CP would be gone before his contract was done. :)

The Chiefs are going to do the best they can not to humiliate the guy
And THATS the reason people want to work for this organization. By having it be a joint decisions by the owner and GM it makes it a “fair” situation for any incoming HC. If either of them made the other look like the “bad guy” we’d have press conferences announcing HC relases ala Al Davis.
Bill Parcell’s: "You are what your record says you are."
Thigpen WILL NOT be the Chiefs starting QB next year IMO. He can compete for the job and should be 2nd or 3rd string.
