What would do if you were Pioli?

The question is simple enough: If you were Scott Pioli, what moves would you make.  Who would you hire as head coach? What players would you release or trade?  Who would you draft? What free agents would you try to acquire?  I know now that we all know Pioli is the new GM, our attention will quickly shift to these questions.  Should make for a exciting and looonnngggg offseason!

Oh and I am 100% positive Ferentz is staying put in Iowa City, so don't bother with him, though KC would be really fortunate to land him.

i would...

…..get rid of larry for picks, try and bring in Kurt Warner to mentor our newly drafted QB and hopefully get another WR or defensive player in the late first with our pick we get for sending larry packing, get Shonn Greene in the second or third….im not really knowledgeable with the overall prospects in this years drafts so that is all I have so far.

by WSPanic201 on Jan 13, 2009 7:17 PM CST reply actions

Warner is not going to leave his starting spot

to be a second string qb in his last couple years in the league..Sorry

I’d bring in Shanahan as head coach..Bring in Crennel as DC…And retain Chan Gailey, or bring in Al Saunders, or someone with whom Shanahan feels a close offensive connection with.

by CALIFAN1986 on Jan 13, 2009 7:49 PM CST up reply actions

yup

we can afford these high profile coaches, i guess.=]

by GHOST OF DT on Jan 13, 2009 8:02 PM CST up reply actions

He would if it were an open compitition...

That’s how he starts now. And you know he’d be willing to compete w/ Thigpen, thinking he can beat him out. We’re stoked either way, either we have a GREAT mentor, or we have A championship QB!

I never thought about Warner but I really like that idea! Good call.

by Dustin SLO,CA on Jan 13, 2009 8:41 PM CST up reply actions

I really don't get that one...

why would he sign with the Chiefs to compete for the starting QB spot on a team that went 2-14 (and features the ever-erratic Dwayne Bowe as its #1 receiver), when he could simply re-sign with the Cardinals (who made the NFC Championship game, at least, this year) and where he has two of the best WR’s in football to throw to?

DO a freaking happy dance cause I just got paid! Then I would begin constructing my new franchise.

The question is...

What would your happy-dance look like?

by Buck'O on Jan 14, 2009 11:24 AM CST up reply actions

What I would do first?

Measure that mantle holding the Super Bowl IV trophy and make sure there’s room for more! If not, hire a carpenter and make room.

We need a future defensive leader, his name is James Laurinaitis and he can be selected in round 1 of the upcoming Draft.

"But what do I know, I’m like an empty room with a large ECHO"

by Lanier63 on Jan 13, 2009 7:52 PM CST reply actions

I would

- Sign either Rex Ryan or Mike Shanahan as head coach. If Ryan, find a good up and coming Offensive Coordinator to pair with him. If Shanahan, find a good Defensive Coordinator to go with him (don’t let Shanny pick his own DC).

- If sticking with the 4-3 defense, sign the best pass rushing DE in free agency since there are NO good prospects in the draft.

- Sign either Bart Scott or Karlos Dansby to add experience to our LB corp.

- Try my best to get whatever I could trade-wise for LJ. If can’t get anything, cut him.

- Use our 1st round pick to draft a franchise QB to build around.

by ChiefDJ on Jan 13, 2009 7:56 PM CST reply actions

Why

Fire cut LJ when he is literally one of the best backs in the nfl..Our line is terrible..And if we cut him we still have to pay him..Makes nooo sense..He will shut his mouth and do what he tolds with Shanhan at the helm

by CALIFAN1986 on Jan 13, 2009 9:11 PM CST up reply actions

LJ doesn't want to be here

His problem was not with the coaching. He had a great relationship with Herm. He hates the midwest and the people here and they don’t like him.

It was a huge mistake giving a malcontent a big contract. There is a clause that if he is convicted, the Chiefs can terminate his contract. If they are unable to trade him, they will take that clause in a heartbeat.

Send him on his way, get some value, and move on. It will be best for everyone.

No pass rush DE in the Draft?

Yes I go to the university of Texas, and my bias toward texas players is ridiculous.. but Brian Orakpo is a legitimate freak of nature. He has speed to burn and strength to stuff the run. Just wait for the combine… you will change your mind.

OU SUCKS!!!!!!

by TexasFight83 on Jan 13, 2009 9:38 PM CST up reply actions

Orakpo will not be a good NFL DE

He has the same problem Hali has in that he is underweight and will get pushed around by NFL Tackles.

by ChiefDJ on Jan 13, 2009 9:47 PM CST up reply actions

Phil Loadholt is a grown man

He will probably be a late first early second pick… and he could not handle Orakpo in the RRS. That’s all I’m sayin…

Chris Long 6-3 263
Vernon Gholston 6-3 264
Tamba Hali 6-3 275
Brian Orakpo 6-3 255

These all look pretty similar to me… I think the difference is skill, instinct and heart. Orakpo has all three.

OU SUCKS!!!!!!

Yep, they all look pretty similar

Chris Long – 4 sacks
Vernon Gholston – 0 sacks
Tamba Hali – 3 sacks

Just saying….

I would

1. Keep thigpen, he has some tools and shown he is willing to learn.
2. Draft an LB/OL with 1st pick.
3. Draft a QB in rnd 2/3 to compete w/thiggs
4. Get an LB in FA
5. Get a pass rushing DE in draft/FA
6. Tell Pat Thomas to go suck d*ck for another NFL team
7. Mention #7 to McIntosh, Boone, and Brodie.
8. Did i mention get a pass rusher?
9. Count the money Clark just gave me.
10. Still counting….
11. Stil counting….
12. Get some late round developmental OL (they are always the meanest and nastiest.) Preferbly big corn-fed boys who have been working on the farm their whole life. Those dudes just don’t have any quit in them.
13. Hire new coaches
14. Still hiring cause i had to fire ALL of them.
15. Re-hire Krumrie (but fire him as DL coach first) and appoint him conditioning coach/official team motivator/abusive father figure
16. Fire gunther then re-hire him as wise old grandpa type greeter for the New Arrowhead. (i would love to hear his stories) “Sir, which way is the bathroom??” “It right the fuck over there, ask me again and i’ll fucking strangle the life out of you!”
17. Think about keeping Chan Gailey…
18. Tell Tank and Turk to produce or GET THE FUCK OFF MY TEAM!!!
19. Tell D-Bowe he will be fined $50000 for every dropped pass/onside kick.
20. Have a BBQ competition in the Arrowhead parking lot in the pre-season.
21. WIN A FUCKING PLAYOFF GAME

by bigbe on Jan 13, 2009 7:58 PM CST up reply actions

Being reasonable...

Frist the HC position I would give to Rex Ryan. He’s a hardcore defensive minded player that has built probably the best defense right now in the NFL. They are strong and dominating. If not Ryan then Spangoulo. He builds on the same philosophy.

Kurt Warner is not going anywhere. After the season he’s lead the Cardinals to he is staying put. On the vets we let go will be Patrick Surtain, Jon McGraw, Pat Thomas, Donnie Edwards, Larry Johnson, Devard Darling, Rudy Niswanger (he might be put as second string or practice squad), Damion McIntosh, Jeff Webb, and Alfonso Boone. We should look as a starting QB in the FA but not to get our hopes up. We really should pick a QB out of the draft to lead our franchise.

In the Free Agency we should look at Peppers and Suggs for consideration, depending on what either team does (i.e. franchising those players) and also look at getting a veteran OL and LB. Donnie is over-the-hill and injury prone and he knows it. No use dangling him any longer than we should.

If we could pick up Matt Cassel than we should go for him because we need someon young enough to lead our offense and Matt did really, really well with the Patriots this year…but it’s Tom Brady’s offense. Matt is not really apart of that equasion.

We undoubtably need a pass rusher for our defense to be any good up front at all. Hali is comfortable where he is but in JA’s old spot is a HUGE void that needs to be filled. We pick up a veteran that has already proven himself but hasn’t fully reached his prime yet. Next year get a DE and build him up to replace the vet and he’ll succeed him when he retires.

We need to get a vet on the OL either the center or a G/T we also need to draft one and build him up the same way. Nothing should be concrete with these players. They need to earn their jobs by showing it on the field.

There’s a lot more that would go on…but I think this could be a good starting place. And it’s just my opinion…

There's no hope with dope...

by chrisjo07 on Jan 13, 2009 8:02 PM CST reply actions

Can't put a veteran like Niswanger on practice squad

It will be interesting because most of the top free agents are going to get franchised. It may be tough to hold on to Bart Scott, Ray Lewis, Dawan Landry, and Terrel Suggs. Not worried about Landry because he is a safety. Just showing that they have 4 players that they don’t want to lose. We should have a shot at Scott or Suggs.

Indecision is the key to flexibility

by cmpotter on Jan 13, 2009 8:06 PM CST reply actions

Hire either Spagnuolo or Jim Schwarz

1. Sign Haynesworth for whatever he wants;
2. Sign Houshmazilly for just about whatever he wants;
3. Take Bradford if he’s available at #3, if not, then grab Andre Smith to bookend with Albert for the next decade;
4. Assuming the Smith pick, take Curtis Painter or Nate Davis with the 2nd round pick;
5. Sign Bart Scott and/or Karlos Dansby;
6. Force Derrick Johnson to spend at least 3 hours per day in the weight room during the offseason;
7. Spend the rest of the team’s draft picks on LB’s and DL’s;
8. Burn the KC Wolf costume and send Peterson the ashes in a nice urn;
9. Begin process of vetting music that was made in this millenium to play in the stadium on gamedays.

I dont have any sources for the Ferentz info

Its just a hunch. As a Hawkeye follower, to see him in tears after the season makes me feel as if he is going to stay put. Also, he has a son on the team and I’m pretty sure he wants to see him through at Iowa before taking off for the NFL. Ypu could just tell this year was really special to him and considering that most of the guys are coming back next year, I think he will stay. If he does go to KC though I have a feeling he will do much better than Herman Edwards.

I'm with you...

however, I don’t think it’s a desicion he’s made yet. He hasn’t come out with the end of the year I’m not going anywhere speech, and James isn’t quite the lineman that Brian is.. I think it’s still open for discussion.

Free Agency

You can’t build a team through Free Agency. Were not the New York Yankees and this is not baseball… it’s the NFL. We have a salary cap. Let’s not forget that it is Free Agency and the ineptitude of Peterson that put the Chiefs in the position that hey are in. When you have a bunch of old players that make high salaries and don’t produce anymore, you have to rebuild. It happened to 49er’s (one of the most consistent Dynasties of the 90’s) and it happened to the Chiefs. That’s not to say I’m completely against Free Agency. You can grab a young legitimate playmaker through Free Agency to make a run at the post season when you are one piece away from a championship squad. Sure, you will overpay, but such is the price of proven talent. The Chiefs are not in this position. When you get lazy with you free agent signings you get in the business of paying washed up players to play for other teams or sit on their couch. (Ty Law anyone?) We need to Draft well, which Pioli is known for (this guy grabbed Asante Samuel in the 4th round). If we have another successful draft, like last year, we will be on the right track.

OU SUCKS!!!!!!

I think Clark was equally behind this rebuild as Herm was if not more in ways. He may have found the right man to continue and do the job to take this squad to the next level
