Other than the organizations which have promoted from within (Detroit and St. Louis) and Lerner's amusing GM-less hire of Mangini, all other positions that opened up in the last two weeks remain open. It may be a trendy opinion that the Chiefs are "falling behind," but looking around the NFL, it just simply isn't true.

The Author Makes Great Points

The thing I’m most concerned about with the GM hunt is that they get one in place and settled before the free agency period kicks off (which means he needs to be hired before the Super Bowl). At that point in time the NFL offseason will be in full swing, the Chiefs have already said they wish to be active participants and if we don’t have a GM in place by then it will be disastrous for the 2009 season.

I’d love it if we got Pioli, but all I really want is a good GM who knows how to evaluate talent in place in time to improve the team for next year and if that isn’t Pioli then so be it. There are several good candidates out there and I’m sure Hunt’s going to be able to figure out which one best suits the Chiefs’ needs. The biggest concern is timing.

As for not leaking it to the press like Cleveland did, I think that’s wise and I think the fans understand that…but I think the fans are looking for any information at all to know that something’s in progress. Thum’s comments did a lot to alleviate my concerns. He didn’t give anything away but he stressed what the organization’s specific goals were for the hiring (GM in place before Super Bowl), he said that they’re still interviewing multiple candidates, and I think that’s really all most of the fans needed.

Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

Agreed

There’s a timetable set now, here’s to hoping it doesn’t extend beyond that *knocks on wood*

The Day Herm Edwards didn't get his team ready to beat the Raiders at Arrowhead is the day he kissed his job goodbye.

So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehn GOODBYYYEE!

I agree

and the Super bowl is now less than two weeks away. I can appreciate two things about this search by Clark.
1) Clark has to make a decision that could affect the job for up to the next 20 years, if we remain somewhat successful over those years. So it’s important to find the right guy.
2) I really appreciate Clark not playing games with the media and making his own informed decisions and including Denny Thum in those. That shows wisdom and having a second set of eyes and another opinion never hurts. And it shows some loyalty to Thum who has never let the organization down yet, that I have heard of.
If Denny is indeed the next President, why not make sure these guys can get along and work together from the beginning?

I am as anxious as anybody to get our man in place, but as with my job I have now, I had to wait three months from my first interview to finally be awarded my position. I think God was trying to teach me patience and it worked, I hope. :)

We need a future defensive leader, his name is James Laurinaitis and he can be selected in round 1 of the upcoming Draft.

I hope not. Only if the guy brings us 4-5 SB’s. I’ll take one every 4-5 years and if he doesn’t make it, he needs to hit the road.

Thigpen WILL NOT be the Chiefs starting QB next year IMO. He can compete for the job and should be 2nd or 3rd string.

That was my point

lol

wellllll…the “somewhat successful” part left a lot of leeway there Lanier. I think that if you asked the FGMKAC (the former gm known as Carl), he could argue about his “somewhat success” ;)

Honestly, this time around I want a formal plan from the GM and he sticks to it. No more 5 year promises that turn into 2 decades.

Herm

The way I see it I think Herm is staying thats what is seems like to me.

I Seriously Doubt It

I think the list of GMs who would put their faith in Herm Edwards’ coaching abilities is going to be a very short one. Maybe Terry Bradway. Beyond that, why would anyone else want to immediately put themselves behind the eight ball with a large portion of the fanbase by taking on Herm’s baggage?

I suspect that Clark Hunt’s “support” of Herm will consist primarily of putting in a good word with the new guy and asking if maybe he’d consider Herm for one more year, followed by him firing Herm once the new GM says no thanks, he’d rather take his chances with a guy he hires himself.

Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

I think we get ferentz

this is the first year he hasn’t denied that he’s moving to the NFL. Usually we get the standard I lovit here at Iowa and that’s where I’ll stay…. not this year. But there are worse candidates out there. Ferentz is a builder and teacher, strong in fundamentals, which I think we need.

If We Get Ferentz

I’ll be fine with it.

Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

I think things will start to pick up rapidly

Our top GM candidates currently work for NE, NY Giants, and (maybe) San Diego, and our top head coach candidates are likely from Iowa, Tennessee, and NY Giants. All of these teams are now done for the season so it will be possible to interview/sign them. It would have been very difficult and inappropriate to do so while their current teams were still competing. I think we will sign a GM rather soon and his first order of business will be to determine if we keep Herm or go after somebody else. All can be accomplished before the Super Bowl and we would be in position to compete in free agency and evaluate draft picks.
