St. Joseph: Consider the I’s and T in “Chiefs training camp” dotted and crossed. It’s official.
The $25 million tax credit proposal that enables the Kansas City Chiefs to relocate their summer training camp to St. Joseph cleared its final state hurdle, Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder said Monday.

The Chiefs agreed to invest $10 million into the arena, which will cost roughly $13.7 million, so Western must raise the rest. A student fee will offset some of the cost, but the city of St. Joseph and Buchanan County are considering how much of the remainder they can afford to provide.

Jeez...
They can’t pony up another 3-4 million? Hell, they’re paying Herm that much for the ‘09 season and chances are he won’t even be working for it.
The Day Herm Edwards didn't get his team ready to beat the Raiders at Arrowhead is the day he kissed his job goodbye.

That's actually a good point
I see the benefit in the local economy, but making the students pay for part of it isn’t really right IMHO. It’s not like the students aren’t going to have enough student loans to pay off….and now this.
I know one of the Dean’s up there. I used to work with him at another job years ago. I wonder what he thinks?

Thigpen WILL NOT be the Chiefs starting QB next year IMO. He can compete for the job and should be 2nd or 3rd string.

Especially
if they aren’t given a CHOICE on whether or not they wanted the facility in the first place.

Yes
But sports aren’t everything, especially when you consider that most people go to that school to get an education.
More or less it’s just infuriating that they get a $25 million tax credit, and expect the citizens to pony up cash for them whenever they want it. Did the stadium(s) need renovation? Probably, but I think if most people saw what the renovations were going to be at Arrowhead it probably wouldn’t have passed so easily. I’m much more impressed with the Kauffman renovation at the current juncture.

To quote one of my favorite movies (The Program), when was the last time 80,000 people paid $50 to show up for a science experiment?
I see what you’re saying…just a little devil’s advocate.

Ever heard of CES?
It’s a few more than 80,000 people…. more like 150,000 (with the exception of 2009 which suffered something like 20% attendance drop).
On the ONE day they let lay people into CES, it runs about $100/head.
But that’s ONE time a year, not 8-10 times :)
It just gets to me that because they (the Chiefs organization) make boatloads of money, they get tax breaks and preferential treatment from everyone. It’s getting a little ridiculous. It should have been wrote into that tax credit that they foot the WHOLE bill for the facility.

Two things
In 2007, the Chiefs enjoyed the use of the University Center for their meeting space and dining needs, in addition to serving as the club’s media headquarters. This $34 million facility was funded entirely by student fees.

A five-year-old study by UW-River Falls researchers measuring the economic impact of the camp estimated its tourism impact at $2 million. The study found the camp drew more than 10,000 people from 10 or more states.

If they want it bad enough, it will happen with no problems finding the money. As with anything else, you usually have to invest something to gain something positive. I for one will now be able to afford to go to the camp. Last year the gas prices kept me from going to River Falls. Now I can come up to St. Joe and stay with family.
We need a future defensive leader, his name is James Laurinaitis and he can be selected in round 1 of the upcoming Draft.

I understand the point about St. Joe reaping the benefits
and there’s not a dispute around that. The sore point is that they intend to “tax” the students for a Professional franchise to have training camp.
If they have a need for money, than the city of St. Joe needs to fork the cash over for the remaining balance. After all, they are going to benefit from the tourism dollars as well as tax dollar revenue from sold goods and services.
The “students” are footing part of the bill for a new facility and to be honest, if you ask the 20 somethings I think the majority would agree that their focus at that point of their lives is getting an education and having some money for beer…not to have to pay for a facility where the city, school and team are the ones benefitting from it.

How about
the year after next, we meet at training camp in St. Joe and do a poll ourselves?

True
But will the students be able to use any of these facilities when the team isn’t there? Like perhaps their collegiate sports teams? If they are, it is totally appropriate for some of the fees to go towards building them. Also, as a grad student, I am confident that this is one of the less dumb things that a university or college has ever thought of to use student fees on.
